If you know Bisaya dialect (and for others who consider it as a language), you would probably laugh at this Korean Tuna product. OTTOGI, from the root word OTOG or UTOG means to get an erection (for men). I wonder how the names of our very own food products would mean in other languages or dialects. I hope there are no unpleasant meanings of it. If you know some, you can share it here. Send it at playpen7@gmail.com.

Kaya Restaurant
2007-09-16 11:23:00
Eating at Kaya Restaurant along Jupiter street is relaxing and a taste of authentic Korean dishes. It was third time to eat at Kaya but it was my first time to eat grilled beef tongue. Grilled tongue is very delicious. Everything is served with kimchi, kimchi and more kimchi. I can't resist the smell of kimchi. The perfect blend of salty and spicy taste keeps me from eating more and more kimchi. Aside from having a fiber-rich composition, this is also rich in amino acids that is good for the body. Mung beans, bean sprouts, sweet-spicy dried and deep-fried anchovies are also served. A perfect combination of overflowing hot green tea is a great match for this meaty night. Aside from beef, we also order pork cutlets and a plate of raw beef with raw egg on top of turnips-like vegetable. Also Korean rice tastes like Japanese rice. It was very satisfying. After the dinner, a bowl of cinnamon and pineapple-based drink was served and a slice of pineapples was served as a complement to our hea

Audio Visual Presentations
2007-09-16 09:54:00
Doing audio visual presentations along with the proper tools and equipment for a visual presentation are crucial for its success. When presenting with a very huge crowd, the size of the text should be big enough to see the people especially at the back side of the room. It is also important to emphasize color contrasts. It means that when the background exhibits a light or bright color, the foreground text color should be dark so that it is readable. Text and image sizes should also be proportion with each other. The bigger the text and image, the better. One paragraph or bullet of a presentation may represent single or two images within the slide. In creating presentation layouts, it is also important that simple but well designed templates must be used. Don't make it too dry to look dull but not too much with so many overlapping elements as audience will be distracted. In presenting ideas and opinions, do not present so many text within a paragraph. Present only what is important an

TV Streaming on Cellphone
2007-09-16 09:39:00
Smart Communications recently launched its MyTV for their Nokia N-series cellphones. I find this so amazing that the offer for the time being, the service is unlimited, even for pre-paid subscribers. You can view your favorite TV shows on your 3G cellular phone. TV channels like Cartoon Network, Entertainment Central, Jack TV, Pinoy Box Office, MTV, CNN, Basketball TV, Solar Sports, PBA, The History Channel and The National Geographic Channel are only available. But despite the limited channels you can view, can't you imagine that now, that you are able to view your favorite channels in your cellphone that was just a fantasy a decade ago? Indeed. But with this cellphone model we found at 1 Esplanade, do you want to own this? Hahaha. This would probably measure 21" across. Cool for video streaming and viewing, right?

The Agony of a Gaikokujin (外国人)
2007-10-04 06:50:00
How different is Philippines from Japan?1.) Prices of goods are very expensive. Bento (lunch boxes) ranges from 290 Yen to as much as 1,000 Yen per box.2.) Do not expect to find cheap Internet Cafes here. Per hour of Internet usage ranges from 300 to 500 Yen per hour depending on what city you live in.3.) Train stations here are very confusing.4.) There are no accessible public markets unlike in the Philippines. All food products are contained in styro containers. Costs around 400 to 1000 Yen depending on the food.5.) Japan is very advance in terms of communications. But do not expect to find pre-paid sim cards here. Only pre-paid cellphones but the price is too high.6.) Do not expect to find cheap laundry here. There are coin laundry shops here but it costs too much. Also, please bring IRON when you come here because it costs around 200 yen per piece of item just for the ironing.

Kanji of the Week No. 20
2007-09-29 08:29:00
READING: Nihon yuki. にほんゆきMeaning:Filipinos are fond of using the term JAPAYUKI or a person who goes to Japan. This is a stigma that they cast among Filipina Entertainers back then during the influx around the 1990's. The first two kanjis mean Nihon・にほん or Japan and the third kanji is derived from "ikimasu"・いきます which means to go. But for this reading, the meaning is YUKI・ゆき which means bound to or bound for a specific destination.Collectively, JAPANYUKI or JAPAYUKI means bound for Japan, and no other such meanings.

Finally, He got His Spot...
2007-09-29 03:45:00
For so long that he's been seeking his place in his so called world. Constant obstacle seems so endless. I have been a witness how hard he gave his best to find where he fits, to look where he belongs. For so long he waited for the right moment, his own moment, but never gave a single doubt that it will not come. And now he is spreading his wings and ready to fly to where he belongs! It maybe a short or long, high or low bumpy ride but he is ready to face the world for this is his moment. This is another story of his colorful life. I, his friends, former colleagues, readers, will definitely waiting for this chapter. Although I will be missing him but sometimes the way of showing that we care is by letting the person go and give his way to fly. This is for you Rey Ian. Always be my bestfriend, my love, my all.

Strolling at Shinjuku 新宿を散歩しました
2007-10-15 06:40:00
It was a day of National Holiday. Second Monday of October is commemoration of the first Olmpics held in Tokyo. It was also a National Day of Sports. So the gaikokujin decided to test his Suica Pass in JR East to see whether there is a charge when you go out in between stations. I was suppose to go to Akihabara but I was scared since it was not really my typical route and the charge for my exit would be more expensive. So I decided to stop by Shinjuku. In Makati, Shinjuku is a famous restaurant for Ramen along Makati Avenue. Here, Shinjuku is not just ramen but a ramen of people going anywhere. Shinjuku is a busy metropolis of class Makati-like Glorietta and Greenbelt malls and shopping arcades. Numerous restaurants, pachinko slots arenas, karaoke bars, and lots and lots of signature shops awaits you here. The facade of the metropolis will give you a little glimpse of a New York, as seen on TV. Here, it was the first time I saw sa diagonal pedestrian crossing. See the picture above, an

The Oden Experience
2007-10-15 06:14:00
In Japan, do not be deceived by these stalls across Tokyo. In the Philippines, we equate street foods as cheap and affordable. These Oden stalls in the streets of Minatoku are more expensive than Obentos sold in convenience shops like Lawson, Family Man and Mini Stops. Each "dumpling" would cost around 100 to 200 each ranging from hotdogs, boiled eggs, tofu and meat/veggie dumplings. Not quite enough for a Filipino diet and food requirement. You know that most Filipino men are really into rice and heavy meals. Sake on the other hand is at 300 Yen per glass. I spent around 800 yen for this food trip. Remarkable though is that I was able to talk and dine with a Japanese family who were very good in English. They lived in Hong Kong for a year and already visited Cebu. They told me the history of these oden shops before. They said that numerous soba and udon shops protested the sprawl of these oden shops because they are taking away their customers. Way back then, there were not less than

The Mishaps of Travelling via Train
2007-10-15 05:34:00
Japan's train system is very efficient unlike in the Philippines. Everyday, I consume about 3 hours of back-and-forth train ride going to the office and back to my home in Kunitachi. I wake up around 6:00am and leave the house not later than 7:30 am. Well, here is the taxing part, the chaos inside the train. From Kunitachi to Shinjuku, I take the Chuo Line, which is colored orange and to which it came from Toyoda, a further city to the west of Tokyo. When the train arrives in Kunitachi, you don't have a choice but to stand and wait for someone to get off and take their place, which in turn, rarely happens. If it happens, he/she gets off in Shinjuku, which the station I also have my norikaemasu/乗り換えます (change ride/trains). Friday last week, along Mitaka City, the conductor of the train suddenly made the train stop. All of the passengers inside, including me were like pins in a bowling game. Strike!!! Living in Japan for 1 Month
2007-10-27 08:53:00
Living in Japan for 1 month is really tough especially if you are alone. My company was able to successfully send me here despite all the troubles I experienced with the Philippine Immigration and POEA. Being here during my first day was really exciting. I have seen Japan, specifically Tokyo, for the first time in my life where only a few people are given the opportunity to visit here. It seemed that I am one lucky guy. But during my third day, my tears swept. It seemed that the gaikokujin after all is indeed experiencing the usual shock all OFWs experience. My officemates are really nice to me. They offered me the comfort that a person that is adjusting is experiencing. But life is really tough here especially for an alone person every weekends. In every weekend that arrives, I usually have the problem of where to go and what to do. So here are my accomplishments for the past month....1.) Went to Tokyo Tower near my office in Minato-ku. I went there but not at the observatory. I costs

Agony of OFWs Over the PESO Exchange Rate

I recently saw this post from Jiphany in Friendster who is now also an OFW in Taiwan.Today is my salary day here in Japan. I am happy. But not until I figured out the exchange rate. On top of that, Inquirer reported that peso is gearing towards the 42.00 to 1 US Dollar mark within next week! Whoooaaa....I think as new heroes of the Philippine economy, we should support this petition. I am calling all OFWs like me to sign in for the petition. Here is the petition letter.Petition LetterAugust 1, 2007Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal ArroyoPresident, Republic of the PhilippinesDear Madam President:First and foremost allow us to commend you for the recent economic achievements of our country under your administration i.e., the spectacular 6.9% growth rate during 1st Quarter of 2007 which is highest in 17 years, the stock market reaching an all-time high, the peso at 7-year high against the US dollar and the multitude of incoming projects you have mentioned recently in your State of the Natio
