Jesus or Paul?
2007-04-11 09:25:00
Think you know your Bible? Take BeliefNet's quiz to see if you know who said what in The Bible. Was it Jesus or Paul? I got most of them wrong. They sounded right to me.

So It Goes - Kurt Vonnegut
2007-04-13 16:36:00
I don't know of any highschooler that hasn't read a Kurt Vonnegut novel and said, "These books change lives, man!" Addmitedly, I grew out of reading his novels though once a year I try to re-read "Breakfast of Champions" for the hundredth time. Even in old age he still had it. Time slowed down the body, but not his mind.He was brilliant, a great writer, and hillarious. I don't think there are many novels out there that make me laugh out loud like his do. May you have a beer with Kilgore Trout and enjoy the rest you have been waiting for.

Woo hoo!
2007-04-19 20:04:00
I am getting my first official payed gig as a writer. A short piece I wrote is going to appear in a future issue of Geeze Magazine. I am so stoked. It was a piece on going to the beach and my lack of just being. I'll make sure to post it when I get the chance.

I can't take it anymore! I have to let it out! I really enjoy Avril Lavigne's new single! Darn it's poppy catchiness! Darn it's clever hook which makes me want to bop my head or dance around my living room! Darn you Avril Lavigne for your precocious cutiness!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ25-glGRzI

The Incredible Disapearing Cube Rev
2007-05-13 15:21:00
Sorry it has been a while. Between the two jobs I literally have enough time to sleep. Thankfully that will soon change. The new job is going well. I enjoy the warehouse side of the job (go figure), but am struggling a bit with the office part. That is common to happen with anyone starting something new. There are some interesting things goin on in the near future. A few concerts that are coming up, but there are a few lectures which I am excited about.Christopher Hitchens, well known atheist and sour puss is speaking at the Philadelphia Library. I am about halfway done reading his book and hope to comment on both later.Sherman Alexie, who wrote one of my favorite short story collections as well as probably the best movie I've seen in about ten years. And I know Jason, you tagged me. I promise I'll try and do it by next week.Sleante!

RIP - Jerry Falwell
2007-05-16 05:12:00
Kurt Vonnegut and Jerry Falwell , such two diverse minds leaving this mortal coil. Though misguided, I can appreciate what Jerry wanted to do. He wanted a pure and Godly world. Though it was shaped in his own image and not per se God's.

I've Been Tagged Twice!
2007-05-18 05:17:00
Since I've been tagged by Jason and Jenn I guess this means I must do 16 random things about myself. First the rules:Post the rules of the game. Tell us about eight random facts/habits about you.At the end of the post, choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things.Leave them a comment telling them they're tagged, and to read your blog.1) Long before I wanted to be a poet I wanted to be a cartoonist. I even had a few cartoons published in local news papers and in my college paper. There are times I think about getting into it again.2) I've been to more than sixty concerts in my life. Mostly they were at music festivals or coffee shops. I can't even remember half the people I have seen.3) Ever since I saw Buckwheat Zydeco perform when I was 12 I wanted to learn to play the accordion.4) I have a black belt in karate. I earned it when I was 12. Being the idiot I was I walked away from it a few

Sex and Advertising
2007-05-26 23:27:00
When I first saw this add over at Pomomusings I was shocked. Then after I thought about it all I could think was, "Does this really suprise me? Is this all that new?" Many years ago there were a bunch of adds out by Calvin Klein that showed scantilly clad young women who could have easily passed for underage in poses that were borderline pornographic. And if any of you were in youth ministry in the early nineties will know the only difference between most modelling and pornography is a few inches.

Life Vs. After Life
2007-05-30 18:44:00
Do people who believe in an afterlife take this life for granted? Even within the Christian community there are arguments about whether Christians should focuss more on the every day problems than on seeing people get to heaven and I at one point wondered if even discussing hell even matters anymore. I know that since I became a Christian I was always told to not put my hope in worldly things because this is not my home. Then they'd tell me to look at God's wonderful creation. Hmmm, sounds a tad contradictory to me.

Movie Review: The Valet
2007-06-09 07:42:00
Every so often I'll go on the spur of the moment to see a movie without knowing anything about it. This is kind of risky because without the aid of reviews (which can be total crap at times) they can at least give you an idea of what the movie is about. This time I chose The Valet for no other reason, but because it happened to be playing when I got there and I didn't feel like waiting an hour for the next movie of my choice to start playing. I knew nothing about this film, not it's premise, not whether it was a comedy or drama, nothing. I didn't even know it was a French until I looked at a synapse of the movie. I felt optimistic since I had seen other french films before and gotten lucky. Ok, so here I am watching a movie having shelled out five bucks for something I had no preconceptions about. Consider all the crappy movies coming out that I can't bring myself to pay even matinee price for I woudl have been more than willing to pay full price to see The Valet. Though i

Devotionals
2007-06-19 14:00:00
Beliefnet has a look at the top ten devotionals. I am not a fan of devotionals, I usually focus on scripture and on occassion looking at the different commentaries or finding a classic from the CCEL. It is still a neet read so enjoy.

Question: Does The Bad Guy Ever Win?
2007-06-21 19:14:00
One advantage to working in a warehouse is it gives me and my co-worker the opportunity to wax poetic on a variety of subjects from Southpark, to pro-wrestling, and even the occassional question about race. Today we were on the subject of movies, mainly our problem with too many sequels and we can usually figure out the story line and how it should end. Let's face it, unless you go the foreign or independent route you aren't going to find many original movies. How many times can you watch the movie where an underdog team goes on to beat the bullies from the other side of town with the help of their reluctant and flawed coach who somehow manages to make them a winning team? Or how a guy gets a woman, but does something to lose the woman, but realises he's done something stupid to lose the woman and is somehow able to get them back again? Or my personal favorite, there is a monster lurking somewhere that is killing people off so everyone dies except one person who manages to kil

Over Rated / Under Rated: Religious Images
2007-06-24 14:24:00
One of the sadder aspects of the protestant church is how they forgot to include artistic expression as a form or worship. That is one area where the Catholics, Lutherans, and Episcopalians have us beaten in spades. As much as I complain about my old days in the church one thing they did right was to have some of the most incredible depictions of The Stations of The Cross I have ever seen. Even as a child who had no care to be at church they really caught my attention. They probably had more of an impact on my early religious development than I realize. Over Rated: Lame Attempts To Be Controversial With Religious ImageryThese days everyone wants to be controversial. Let's face it, it will draw attention to be at the center of some storm. People want to see what damage will be done. The problem is that it leaves no lasting impression and the only emotional responce it'll get is anger.Though I can appreciate Chris Ofili's attempt to make a more ethnic looking Mary all I can say

Milton's Paraphrase of Psalm 114
2007-07-10 20:58:00
John Milton -- A Paraphrase of Psalm 114When the blest seed of Terah's faithfull Son,After long toil their liberty had won,And past from Pharian fields to Canaan Land,Led by the strength of the Almighties hand,Jehovah's wonders were in Israel shown,His praise and glory was in Israel known. That saw the troubl'd Sea, and shivering fled,And sought to hide his froth-becurled headLow in the earth, Jordans clear streams recoil,As a faint host that hath receiv'd the foil. The high, huge-bellied Mountains skip like RamsAmongst their Ews, the little Hills like Lambs. Why fled the Ocean? And why skipt the Mountains? Why turned Jordan toward his Crystall Fountains?Shake earth, and at the presence be agastOf him that ever was, and ay shall last,That glassy flouds from rugged rocks can crush,And make soft rills from fiery flint-stones gush.

Miscellany
2007-07-14 22:33:00
I wish I could remember who it was that first point out to me The Bible Fight game, but apparently there are some Christians who enjoy it as well. I wasn't too interested in the game myself. I'd much rather protect villagers from being carried off.***After reading Christopher Hitchens' book God Is Not Great and hearing his comments on Jerry Falwell I have come to the conclusion that Hitchens is the atheists Jerry Falwell. Think about it: 1) Both make outrageous claims 2) Both claim to speak for the whole of the people the represent 3) Both enjoy imensely grabbing as much as the spotlight as they possibly can. Hat tip to Slacker for first bringing this video to my attention. Though I do not think Falwell ever flipped off an audience for hissing him.Added points if you can guess what picture came up when I did a google image search of Hitchens book by title. Even I was surprised.***What do you value? I have to admit this video choked me up a bit. Hat tip to Pulpit Pimps.***

Life After Potter
2007-07-21 07:00:00
With the final Harry Potter book coming out I saw on the news this morning a psychologist teaching parents coping skills to get through their loss. OK, I can appreciate people love the Harry Potter series. Heck, I was giddy as a school boy when I heard they were making a new Dr. Who series. I even dressed up as Doctor Who for Halloween. Twice! And when Sci-fi or fantasy series I particularly loved were done I just moved on to the next series I could find or just re-read them at a later time. All things come to an end. And as scripture says, "...all flesh is like grass". Are we so soft that this is the worse that can happen to us?

Can We Laugh At Ourselves?
2007-07-20 22:17:00
I just perused the titles of the articles listed by The Soma Review. The Onion is probably some of the best spoofing humor in the world. When you read these articles what do you think? Do you laugh? They tend to make us look a little silly and perhaps foolish. Maybe we have had it coming this whole time? Or at the very least it can be expected. Fortunately we are able to poke fun at ourselves. We get the joke.

Goodbye Ward Churchill
2007-07-25 20:45:00
I am all fore freedom of speech. Without my basic right to speak what I think and feel will turn us into a modern day "1984". That being said I believe other people have the right to correct me when I am speaking foolishly and to disagree with me. Heck, I am a nobody with a little blog that a few people read. I don't have the power of a Ward Churchill who each year has hundreds of young minds eating out of his hands. I have been trying to think of a nice way to put my feelings on this buy, but I can't. The dude is a whacko and a fraud. And he finally has gotten fired from his teaching position at a prestigious college. A few of his more colorful claims are that he is a native american and part of elite forces in Viet Nam and the people who died in the Twin Towers were little Eichmann's. I don't have a problem being taught by people I disagree with because it is nothing new. I do have a problem with people giving false information and not being held accountable for it.

Intreview Me

I have been interviewed by the great and powerful Art. If any of you would like to be interviewed by myself please feel free to drop me an e-mail at cubicle.reverend@gmail.com and I'll send you some questions. Enjoy.1. Dave, You've discussed hell in several of your posts. Tell us, what exactly is "hell". Is it a physical place, a state of mind, or a condition of the soul. Or is it something we cannot fully comprehend. Enlighten us. Have I really discussed hell that much? At the risk of becoming overly obsessive about hell and becoming a hate mongerer there I can look at Hell in either the theologically or poetically. I have to admit talking about Hell at all makes me uncomfortable, but it is a topic that has been too long ignored by some churches or completely overtaken others. Theologic hell is a physical place. Where that place is I cannot begin to guess. All I know is it isn't a place I would want to go for the fact there is a deep absence of God. The torments are bad e

Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars
2007-08-15 21:20:00
Last night Ken, his wife, son, and myself went to see The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, a band formed in a refugee camp. All I can say is it was incredible. Their music is a mixture of reggae, traditional African rhythms, and rap. You couldn't help find yourself bobbing up and down to the music. To top it off the weather was perfect and we had an incredible view of the Philadelphia Sky Line. Did I mention the show was free?
