Chrono Crusade review - ep. 1-4
2007-08-26 15:33:24
I was actually introduced to Chrono Crusade by a close friend and fellow anime fan on DeviantART. I’ve been intrigued by this series for a long time, but I didn’t get to watch even the first disc until just recently. Now, however, I’m glad I saw it. Rosette Christopher is a nun - more specifically, a firearm-toting nun who fights the forces of evil with her sidekick, Chrono (also spelled Chrno). She lives in a convent with her various friends, and goes on occasional missions, all with the hope of someday finding her brother Joshua. But things get complicated when people begin to find out that Chrono is really a demon, and the appearance of people called ‘Apostles’ just adds to the danger… Chrono Crusade’s strongest point are its action and its characters. Every episode review ed here has dynamic battles against demons, with guns and explosions and everything an action fan could want. The characters themselves add to the fun: Rosette is a loudmo

.hack//Legend of the Twilight review: vol. 1-3
2007-08-25 09:55:05
In their attempt to infect every form of Japanese media, the creators of .hack// decided to do a manga. While it wasn’t a bad idea, the final product kinda makes me want to kill the entire .hack// series with a butter knife. A quick summary: Shugo and his sister Rena are newbie gamers in ‘The World’, an MMORPG played with cool headsets. Rena won a set of legendary character designs for them to play with, but those designs don’t help them in a battle against a giant monster- Shugo gets killed trying to protect Rena. And THEN he gets brought back to life by a mysterious young girl who kisses him and gices him a magical bracelet. Pure lolibait. When he wakes up, Rena has been rescued by a hot swordsman, who’s actually an administrator (but the kids don’t know that, of course.) So Shugo and Rena set out to investigate the weird things that have been happening in ‘The World.’ Though the above scenario is mildly cliched, it sounds interesting&

Naruto episode 101 to air in English TONIGHT!
2007-08-25 09:20:27
If you live in the United States, anyway. ^_^;; Cartoon Network will be airing the beloved “Gotta See! Gotta Know! Kakashi-Sensei’s True Face” at 9 pm EST. What’s this ultra-special episode about, you ask? Out-of-character Sasuke, obsessive Sakura and Naruto , and Kakashi’s adorable cluelessness. Perfect fangirl bait. Anyway, I’m probably the only one who cares, because I’m a Kakashi fangirl, but whatever ^_^ Cookies to Anime News Network’s ‘The Click’ for pointing this out.

After a half hour of edits, cursing, and JPEG-related BS…
2007-08-24 17:58:26
&hellip ; I now present to you a beta version of the Borderline Hikikomori mascot. She doesn’t have a name yet, so it’s up to you guys to name her, I guess. I based her on a random doodle I did in my mom’s notebook last week. I though about doing a full-size chibi, but I wanted to get the whole ‘dorky hikikomori’ idea across… Anyway, this little fella gave me SO much trouble because I wasn’t able to use Photoshop to touch it up. I had to rely on MS Paint, and I kept accidentally saving it as a JPEG, which can mess up the quality when you’re converting it from a bitmap, and can someone tell me why Wordpress won’t let you upload bitmaps?!? The I tried doing an inverted version of the original, and it looked cool, but then it completely clashed with the rest of the page. (… if you understood the above jargon/rant, you get a net cookie. ^_^) This will hopefully be the last major layout modification for a while. I’ll probabl

Crimson Hero review- vol. 1-2
2007-08-24 16:16:55
Even though I’m mostly a shonen lover now, I come across good shojo series every now and then. Normally said series are outside the pages of the oft-dreaded Shojo Beat magazine. Though I really don’t have a hatred for Shojo Beat, I was mildly shocked at myself for wanting to pick up Crimson Hero volume 1 on a whim at a Borders one afternoon. I quickly discovered what a unique combination of sports and shojo this series is. The story begins with tomboyish Nobara Sumiyoshi’s first day of high school. She picked out her school because it’s legendary in the volleyball world, and she’s a serious volleyball FREAK player. However, when she arrives at her school, she finds out that there’s no girls volleyball team- the boys’ team is the one everyone’s talking about. Desparate, Nobara quickly attempts to form her own team, but her mom tries to stop her. Then Nobara runs away from home and lives in the boys’ volleyball dorm as a dorm mother.

D.Gray-man Review: vol. 3-4
2007-08-24 07:39:31
For my review of vol. 1-2, click here D.Gray-man just keeps getting better and better. With volume 3, Lenalee/Linali gets more screentime, a new enemy is introduced, and a new exorcist is found. Then, at the end of volume 3, we get a tantalizing glimpse of LAVI!!!!! Lavi, another exorcist. Volume 4 starts off with some brilliant character development and then throws Lavi and Allen together on a mission. Describing the strengths and weaknesses of these volumes in coherent sentenced is going to be troublesome. Plus I’m still tired, because it’s only 8 am in Ohio right now… so I guess a list is in order! Strengths: Hoshino Katsura’s art Allen and Lenalee’s arguement Road Kamelot Lavi (and the comedic moments that often accompany him) Allen’s conflict with himself Komui. ^_^ Weaknesses: Occasional cliches. (Hoshino’s take on vampires is original, but they’re STILL freaking vampires) Viz’s translation job Needs more Lavi. Coherent e

An official webpage has been launched for a Kodomo no Jikan anime set to air in fall 2007. What’s Kodomo no Jikan, you ask? Lolicon. >_> The manga was set to be released in the States under the name Nymphet but was canceled because Seven Seas (who licensed it) realized that it would be too controversial. Thank goodness. But NOW there’s an anime?!?! I truly hope THAT never gets released in the States (or anywhere!)

Trailer for 2nd Bleach movie online
2007-08-23 12:22:08
View here Not much of a trailer, but it’s there (and it has Urahara in it, which is awesome.) But what’s with Ichigo and Hitsugaya fighting at the end?! I thought that the movie would be about Ichigo and Company’s attempts to SAVE Hitsugaya, not capture him like the Soul Society wants… perhaps I was misled, or perhaps I misinterpreted something. Oh well. Either way, it’s a party for the Shiro-chan fangirls. Like me. Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion premieres in Japanese theatres on December 22, which probably means that we have at least 2 years until and English version is released. Yipee.

Bleach volume 1 (ep. 1-4)
2007-08-23 08:50:16
When I was new to anime, I was horribly biased against anything non-shoujo. Stuff like Eureka Seven, Naruto, Evangelion, and Bleach got a 24/7 cold shoulder from me. And then I actually bothered to watch Naruto, and it opened me up to the world of shonen. Then I watched the US premiere of Bleach on Adult Swim, and I loved it. Sounds kinda like my story about Lucky Star, ne? ^_^;; If you’re honestly clueless as to what the uber-popular Bleach is about, I’ll give you a quick rundown: Ichigo Kurosaki is a 15-year-old high schooler who hangs out with friends, helps his dad in his clinic, has no feelings for girls… oh, and he can see ghosts. When a shinigami/Soul Reaper named Rukia accidentally transfers her powers to him, he has to handle her otherworldly responsibilities on top of his own. While the whole ‘ordinary high schooler who gets special powers’ thing is pretty cliched, it’s the original characters that make this series shine. (The cool swordpl

Fullmetal Alchemist review - vol. 1-2
2007-08-29 13:42:19
With the recent volumes making it onto the USA Today top 150 booklist, one must wonder how this series started off. Even though it’s Hiromu Arakawa’s first work ever, it’s amazingly good. It improves over time, though; the first two volumes aren’t quite as good as the rest of the series. In case you don’t know the storyline: Edward Elric is a 15-year-old state alchemist who’s on a quest with his brother, Alphonse, to get their original bodies back. Their original bodies were damaged when they attempted alchemy’s greatest taboo: resurrecting the dead. Edward now has a metal arm and leg, and Alphonse’s soul is trapped in a suit of armor. Despite this, the brothers work hard to try to make the Philosopher’s Stone, an item of legend that grants almost limitless power. It almost sounds like your standard shonen adventure story: set off on a journey, fight some bad guys, get the item of legend, kick some more butt, yada yada. But there&rs

Singer and songwriter extrordinare - Yui
2007-08-28 14:41:31
(Not Yui Makino, and not Yui Horie. Just Yui. ^_^) I absolutely adore Yui. She’s one of the most talented singers and songwriter s I’ve heard, and she also plays guitar! How cool is that? I live in America, so I constantly hear stuff like ‘I love Rihanna she has such a great voice’ and ‘Fergie is so coooool!’ However, can either of those girls play guitar or write lyrics? NO. Plus, they both dress like prostitutes. However, in addition to being talented and modest, Yui has gotten her music featured in the Bleach anime! She sang the 5th opening, Rolling Star, as well as the 5th ending, Life. Rolling Star even made it onto the Oricon top 10 charts! I think, though, that it’s her lyrics that help make her so popular. Instead of typical anime theme song tripe like ‘We’re far apart, but I feel our hearts are close, even though our memories are fading,’ Rolling Star’s chorus goes like this: “The world I want and see in

D.N. Angel review - volume 1-2
2007-08-28 12:12:48
Aaaaah, shojo… D.N. Angel was, believe it or not, the first manga I ever bought. I got interested in it after seeing some of the anime on Anime Network… and it’s shocking to see how much better the manga is. Daisuke Niwa seems like a normal eighth grader, but on his 14th birthday, his mom forces him to become the legendary Phantom Thief Dark! His crush who rejected him, Risa, falls in love with Dark; but Dark, who’s using Daisuke’s body, likes her twin sister Riku. And then Riku begins to fall for Daisuke… What’s a teenager in a love polygon supposed to do? Get caught in akward positions with the totally hot Commander of the Special Armed Forces, of course! YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! D.N. Angel is almost completely shojo, with only occasional shonen cliches (Risa falls on Daisuke in the pool, for crying out loud.) Like many shojo series, though, its main weakness is its characters. While Daisuke, Riku, Satoshi and Dark are all fairly like

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - ep. 1-5 review
2007-08-27 16:33:58
I’ll start this review off with the word that describes this series best: scary. Of course, anyone who’s seen this series, fan or hater, could’ve told you that. This series has its reputation for a reason. Satisfyingly scary without being too ridiculously bloody, Higurashi season 2 isn’t a sucky sequel - though I have yet to see the original, so I can’t say if it’s better than its predecessor. At first glance, the series seems like a standard harem comedy - Keiichi moves to Hinamizawa and befriends all the girls and does fun stuff with them, there’s moe fluff, blah blah blah, etc. But that’s not the interesting part: its merely icing on the cake for the male viewers. No, the interesting part is the conspiracies, alleged aliens, and a ‘patron god’ of Hinamizawa that we learn about in the first episode. Episode 1 is a flash forward to the present (the series is set in 1983) and some detectives are investigating the tragic Great

Eureka Seven manga review - vol. 1-2
2007-08-27 11:39:45
YEEESSSSSS I’ve wanted to do this review for a long time!!!! Yes, I’m reviewing another shonen series. I’ll do something shojo-ish soon, I promise. Anyway, Eureka Seven ’s story goes like this: Renton Thurston is a bored 14-year-old who loves lifting - basically surfing on thin air - and will do anything to get away from his boring hometown. One day, he gets the chance to join his heroes, Gekkostate, when a young girl, Eureka, and her robot crash through his roof! By providing the final piece of the girl’s robot, Renton unlocks its full potential, and gets to help Gekkostate… with their laundry and paperwork. Eureka Seven is a fun, fairly lighthearted series through the first volume; then things pick up in volume 2, and the plot’s twists and turns completely hook you. After all the standard character introductions, there’s drama that rivals most shojo manga. Example: learning of Gekkostate’s military background makes Renton begin

Fullmetal Alchemist anime boxsets coming soon!
2007-09-02 10:48:11
Coming out a full year after the movie’s North American release is FMA episodes 1-16 in a BOXSET!!!! I have been waiting for this since I first got into the series, because who can afford to buy 13 volumes of an anime anymore? $20 per volume times 13 = $260. Also, they’re starting to release Bleach boxsets too, only they contain 20 episodes, which is spiffy since the series is currently at 137 or so episodes. FMA boxset pre-order is here, while the first Bleach boxset can be found here.

500 hits + IRL updates
2007-09-01 20:32:56
+ First of all, Borderline Hikikomori is currently at 496 hits… and since i’ll probably get 30 or so hits overnight, I’ll go ahead and say “THANK YOU!!!!” right now! Thanks everyone, and keep enjoying my baby project! + There were no updates on Friday because I was very lazy, but I made up for it with two articles (plus thisone) today. Happy now? + And you’re lucky you got any articles at all, because I was at the Ohio Renaissance Festival (with friends! *gasp*) acting like an exorcist all day.  I ended up expelling an Akuma from an overly flirtatious minstrel and a drunk jester, and I explained the symptoms of being demon-possessed to another minstrel guy: Me: Okay, so you’re in danger of being demon possessed if you lost a loved one recently. Minstrel: … my hamster died. Me: I’m sorry. So, if you have any desire to ressurect the dead loved one… Minstrel: Uh-huh… Me: … and a guy with freaky glasses and a big

Code Geass review - ep. 1-4
2007-09-01 17:01:51
If you haven’t heard of Code Geass by now, you’ve either been living under a rock or you’re not an anime nerd. (If it’s the latter, then why are you reading this post?!?) Code Geass is probably the most well-known mecha series produced in recent history (meaning the past 2 or 3 years.) It should be noted, however, that Code Geass is no ordinary mecha anime: it’s fantasy, drama, action and fanservice comedy in ways that twist almost every cliche in the book. Lelouche Lampourage is a high school student in a future Japan that has been taken over by the Britannian Empire. He is no ordinary student, however: he and his sister are the abandoned children of Britannia’s current emperor. When he uncovers a military secret weapon - which is actually a strange young woman - he is granted the Geass, a power that forces obedience on anyone who looks into his left eye. He begins to use the Geass to achieve his ultimate dream of defeating Britannia and returning j

ZOMG FTA Scanlation group taking a break
2007-09-01 16:24:31
After a month long delay in their attempted English scanlation of Fullmetal Alchemist chapter 73, ‘ZOMG Fruit Tree Alchemists’ is taking a long break. They announced on their homepage that both members of the project will not be translating anything for a few months, though they will still be uploading RAW (untranslated) chapters. Sad news for the FMA fans, since ZOMG FTA has better translations than VIZ Media, and their chapter omakes are hysterical. I certainly hope to see them back soon. Perhaps by Christmas; that would make a nice present, ne? EDIT: Found another active scanlation group here. ^_^

D.N. Angel review - vol. 3-4
2007-08-30 08:03:08
For my review of volumes 1 and 2, click here By the end of volume 2, D.N. Angel was starting to look like a decent series. With volume 3 and 4, though, it begins to turn into a great series. Volume 3 has more love polygon antics, with Daisuke FINALLY realizing he likes Riku on St. White’s Day. An important family figure of Daisuke’s finally makes an appearence, but not before something bad happens to Daisuke, and Dark has to rescue him. Then, in a brilliant twist, yet another bad thing happens to Daisuke, and we begin to realize how crazy his mom really is. In volume 4, Daisuke and Riku set off on a class trip. Daisuke, however, has important work to do as Dark. As he’s attempting to steal something. Dark gets trapped in a magic mirror… and a new enemy is introduced. I can’t explain the rest of the volume without spoiling it, but it’s better than volumes 1 and 2 combined. ^_^ The series has the same general strengths and weaknesses as in volumes 1

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS- ep. 1-4
2007-09-26 17:39:12
Ah, yet another magical girl anime. Most would be quick to dismiss this as a quick cash-in on the magical girl cliche, but don’t do that just yet. While it’s fairly stiff at first, it hints at possible depth and drama later on; and since I’ve already seen episode 5, I’d say that depth may [...]

D.Gray-man anime review- ep. 13-16

For my review of episodes 9-12, click here. While it’s not great at everything, D.Gray-man at least seems to be great at getting better. Kino no Tabi Novel review - vol. 1
2007-09-21 16:00:12
Despite being published in Japan in 2000, Kino no Tabi is finally being brought to the U.S. by Tokyopop’s Pop Fiction line. I use ‘finally’ because this novel has been much anticipated by fans of the anime that was released by ADV in… uhhh, 2004. Practically ancient history. Despite some annoying changes on Tokyopop’s part, [...]
