The Uninstallers Usually, when most people want to uninstall a program for some reason or another, they usually go to Windows' own Add or Remove Programs utility right within the Control Panel. (If you're not sure how to use that, here is an article you can read that will help you). But, oh boy! Isn’t it a pain?! I mean, it takes forever to load up, it doesn’t give you a whole lot of information about what the programs are and it seems to miss an awful lot. So, what else can you do? Well, there are a number of free programs available that do a far better and more complete job. So, what do you say we check them out?! Basically, they fall in two categories: 1.) Improved versions of the Add and Remove programs utility - These ones give you more information and a more complete listing. Plus, they generally take a snapshot of your

Windows Vista Preview Pane Just letting you know, if you're a Windows Vista user, you're going to love what I have for you today! One of the options I love and use most often in Windows Vista is the Preview Pane feature, which is located on the right side of Windows Explorer. It is a very handy and useful tool for anyone who needs to scroll through the contents of their files. File types like MS Word, MS Excel, Notepad, Wordpad, audio or video files, etc. can be seen through the Preview Pane. It also brings some extra features along for the various file types. For example, Excel files can be browsed through with the different tabs contained in the spreadsheet and in the case of audio and video files, it presents a mini-embedded Windows Media Player that can be used to view the files. Along with that, you can even copy the contents of the file selectively for the di

Lost Documents Have you changed your Internet Service Provider (ISP) lately? If so, during the transition, did you happen to lose some e-mails you wanted to keep? Or, how about this: you downloaded or saved a document and for the life of you, you can’t find it on your PC. Either way, don't panic, because all is not lost! Actually, nothing is lost, because your documents are there somewhere. It’s just a matter of knowing how and where to look for them. Awhile back, my daughter did not come home from school at her usual time. I called the school, which called her bus and they reported that she had never gotten on the bus. She was missing. So, in working with the school and the local police department, we started looking for her in the places where she ought to be (for example, the school, our street, etc). We then expanded our search to places she was no

computer tips-searching with Head Tags
2007-08-16 06:56:00
Searching with Head Tags Need a little help getting your Web site noticed? If so, try these tips! Search engine traffic is the best traffic a Web site can get and obviously, the higher your site is in the search engine listings, the more visitors your Web site will get. Most people will perform a search and then click the very top result. This means, if you are at the top of the list, you're guaranteed hundreds and thousands of unique visitors each and every day, depending on your site's topic. Now, getting to the top of the search engine results depends on a few factors: the number of people linking to your Web site, the quality of the content on the page and the tags that appear in the head section of the code for your Web page. Those tags are known as head tags or meta tags. Most search engines will mainly base the searches on those meta tags, but s

computer tips-trimming the vista border
2007-08-16 06:13:00
Trimming the Vista Border Here's another one for all you Windows Vista users out there! Windows Vista, by default, has huge borders around all their pages. This was probably done to show off the new transparency, but if you prefer a more slimmed down, minimal approach, you can easily configure this setting to make it a little more reasonable for yourself. Here's an image with the normal window border you are probably used to seeing. More so, the borders look even more ridiculously large if you aren't using the Aero interface. Now, here's a picture of the window border after some of the "padding" has been removed. It's much less wasted space, don't you think?! To make this change on your Vista computer, you'll need to open the classic Appearance Settings dialogue box. To get there, right click on your desktop and choose

2007-08-16 06:05:00
The PC Decrapifier I know that name sounds a little funny, but make sure you keep reading, because I think you're really going to like this one. Trust me! Why, oh why do computer manufactures load their new machines with so much garbage? You know what I mean. Thirty day trials of this, cut down versions of that, advertisements to buy other programs, a whole host of utilities, nameless toolbars and who knows what else. And that’s even before you’ve started putting what you want on it! Even more, the real problem is that unless we are computer experts, we are terrified of removing any of that junk ourselves, just in case it’s a vital component of the system that we don't know about. Or, who knows, we could invalidate a guarantee or something just as horrible. Well, thankfully, someone has recognized the problem and has given us a (free for priva

Do you go with a well known name, such as Apple and their iPod or do you take a chance on a cheaper, not so well known maker? Well, to make your decision a little easier, here is a rough guide on what to look for when buying an MP3 player. Memory Memory is the key to an MP3 player. Therefore, the greater the memory, the better it is. You can store that many more songs and so on. There's nothing like it! Audio/Video Formats If your player supports a number of audio and video formats, it’s a great value add, because you don’t have to bother looking for a software program that converts it to a compatible format. The audio formats include MP3, WMA, FLAC,

Graphics Card Blues Have you ever tried to play a game or use software that involves a lot of graphics or anything of the sort, only to get a pop up message telling you that you need to lower your screen resolution? Or, maybe even lower your color quality. Either way, if you have, you probably find this extremely annoying, am I right? Well, this pop up can happen for a number of reasons. Today, I will talk about the top three reasons and I'll also give you some hints on how you can fix the problem yourself. The first cause of this could be that your graphics card cannot handle such a high screen resolution, color quality or both. Most users who use Windows have their screen resolution set to 800x600, 1024x768 or something relatively close. If you have accidentally set it to something higher, your graphics card may not be able to handle all of that very well. The sa

computer tips-choosing a UPS
2007-08-16 05:38:00
Choosing a UPS Imagine this: Your expensive computer and all the important data you have on it could be rendered useless due to power surges, spikes and burnouts. Which is why it’s best to have a UPS and a voltage stabilizer that is designed to protect you against such power disturbances and more importantly, power up your computer even when there is no power supply. Here are a few tips that should help you in choosing the right UPS for you. 1.) Power Points The more power points on the UPS, the better it will be for you. If you are a home PC user, look for a UPS with at least a 500 to 700 VA rating. 2.) Backup Time Don’t expect your UPS to keep your PC running all day. Most of them are engineered to provide you with a backup time of around 10 to 20 minutes. What they essentially do is save your work when there is a power shutdown t

Texter If you thought about it, I think you'd be surprised at how often you type the same things everyday. Now, wouldn't it be much easier to have the computer type those things for you? That would be so useful, don't you think?! It would save a lot of time too. Well, it just so happens that an application I'm going to show you today will do just that! The program we will be working with today is very simple, yet very powerful and it goes by the name of Texter. Adam Pash of Lifehacker, Inc. developed Texter himself. So, what does it do? Well, it allows you to program a hotstring and a replacement phrase. When you type the hotstring and hit a certain trigger key, the entire phrase will appear for you. For example, if the keyword is ''add" and I programmed the replacement phrase as my address, I would type "add" and then hit the trigger button. Once I do that, my
