CONSUMER GROUP FINDS LEAD-LEADEN LIPSTICKS
2007-10-24 11:19:00
More than half of major brands tested contained leadIts not just kids' and pets' toys that have dangerous levels of lead. Mom’s lipstick might have the same problem.Lead tests, conducted by an independent laboratory for the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, analyzed red lipsticks bought in Boston, Hartford, Conn., San Francisco and Minneapolis.More than half of 33 brand-name lipsticks tested -- 61 percent -- contained detectable levels of lead, with levels ranging from 0.03 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm). None of these lipsticks listed lead as an ingredient, the group said.According to the analysis, one-third of the tested lipsticks exceeded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s 0.1 ppm limit for lead in candy – a standard established to protect children from directly ingesting lead.Lipstick products, like candy, are directly ingested into the body. Nevertheless, the FDA has not set a limit for lead in lipstick.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007

MAGAZINE FINDS LEAD IN MAXI TOY BLOCKS

Toy company tries to block publication of findingsA Canadian consumer magazine, Protégez-Vous, reports that tests of Mega Bloks plastic building blocks found lead levels that exceeded the 600 parts per million (ppm) safety standard that is in effect in both Canada and the U.S.Mega Brands, the Montreal-based manufacturer of the blocks, went to court to seek an injunction barring publication of the article, but was unsuccessful, The New York Times reported. Mega, Canada's largest toy manufacturer, denies its toys contain dangerous levels of lead.It was a "total shock," when independent tests found lead in 32 tested toys, three of which had lead above recommended levels, including Mega Bloks Maxi System, a set of plastic building blocks, said Marie-Josee Boudreau, an engineer who conducted the lead tests included in Canada's annual toy survey, the Montreal Gazette reported.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/maxi_lead.html~Sandy G.

FDA REQUIRES LABEL CHANGES FOR CIALIS, LEVITRA AND VIAGRA

New labels will warn of risk of hearing lossThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved labeling changes for erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs in the class that includes Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. The new label will highlight the potential risk of sudden hearing loss, and to guide consumers on what to do if they experience sudden problems with their hearing after taking the drugs. In addition, the FDA said it plans to require the same changes in labeling for the drug Revatio, also a member of this drug class known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.Revatio is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is a serious medical condition in which continuous high blood pressure in arteries of the lungs weakens the heart muscle and often leads to right heart failure and death. The FDA asked manufacturers of these drugs to revise product labeling after a very small number of patients taking the PDE5 inhibitors reported sudden hearing loss, sometimes accompanied by r

EAR INFECTION SUPERBUG DISCOVERED
2007-10-28 19:25:00
Tough strain resists all approved drugsResearchers have discovered a strain of bacteria resistant to all approved drugs used to fight ear infections in children, according to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).A pair of pediatricians discovered the strain because it is their standard practice to perform an uncommon procedure called tympanocentesis (ear tap) on children when several antibiotics fail to clear up their ear infections. The procedure involves puncturing the child’s eardrum and draining fluid to relieve pressure and pain. Analyzing the drained fluid is the only way to identify the bacterial strain causing the infection.Even after the ear tap and additional rounds of antibiotics, infections persisted in a small group of children in a Rochester, New York, pediatric practice, leading to ear tube surgery and, in one case, to permanent hearing loss. The physicians realized they may be dealing with a “superbug” and tested the children's ear

STUDY WARNS OF SUSHI RISKS
2007-10-28 18:20:00
Parasitic infection can cause severe abdominal distressSushi has become increasingly popular in the United States, but two case studies from Japan point to a potential health problem.Anisakiasis, sometimes called round worm, is a human parasitic infection caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood containing Anisakis larvae.Consumers should be aware that while larvae for the parasitic worm Anisakis cannot survive in a human host, the ingested larvae can produce severe intestinal problems warranting a visit to the emergency room, the researchers warn. When ingested by humans, the larvae attach themselves to the tissues lining the stomach and intestines, resulting in sudden abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.Since the larvae cannot survive in humans and eventually die, intestinal anisakiasis usually resolves on its own. But in the meantime, it’s not very pleasant.Researchers in Japan examined two cases of intestinal anisakiasis presenting as an obstruction of th

ONE COLONOSCOPY EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING CANCER DEATHS

Just a single colonoscopy could save your life, study suggestsGetting just one colonoscopy might save your life, researchers say.Using a model to predict reductions in death from colorectal cancer, epidemiologists and clinical researchers from Memorial Sloan-Kettering looked at the relative effect of getting just one screening colonoscopy which cleared pre-cancerous polyps from the colon versus surveillance follow-up colonoscopy.Ann G. Zauber, Ph.D., Sidney J. Winawer, M.D., MACG and colleagues presented their findings at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.“The model demonstrated a dramatic reduction in expected colorectal cancer mortality with initial polypectomy with or without surveillance, and suggests that the initial polypectomy accounts for the major component of the mortality reduction,” explained Dr. Zauber.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/colonoscopy_benefit.html ~Sandy G.

CALIFORNIA BANS PLASTIC-SOFTENING CHEMICAL IN TOYS
2007-10-28 11:57:00
Phthalate, widely used in baby toys, linked to health problemsCalifornia has banned toys and baby products that contain more than a trace amount of phthalate, a chemical that's used to soften plastics. The substance is commonly used in baby bottles, teething rings, soft baby books and other toys intended for infants and toddlers, but some scientists say it interferes with hormones and can lead to early puberty, reproductive defects and other health problems. The industry disputes that and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says it has found "no demonstrated health risk" involving phthalate."We must take this action to protect our children," said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as he signed what became known as the Toxic Toys Bill. "These chemicals threaten the health and safety of our children at critical stages of their development."Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/ca_toys.html~Sandy G.

MEDTRONIC WITHDAWS DEFIBRILLATOR WIRES
2007-10-28 11:48:00
Already-implanted wires should be checkedMedtronic is withdrawing electronic heart defibrillator wires from the market, after reports of malfunctions and at least five patient deaths.About 235,000 patients worldwide have defibrillators that use the "Sprint Fidelis" wires implanted in their chests. The tiny wires -- called "leads" -- connect the patients' hearts to the stopwatch-size defibrillators. Medtronic said the leads could fracture inside the patients' blood vessels, possibly causing the defibrillator to erroneously send a massive electrical jolt to the heart. The defibrillators are designed to detect an irregular heartbeat and deliver one or more shocks to restore a normal rhythm. If the device discharges erroneously, it could cause serious problems in at least some patients, medical authorities said.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/medtronic.html ~Sandy G.
