2007-09-29 09:32:00
Good news for squeamish toddlers ... and their parentsThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the way for children as young as age two to receive FluMist, a nasal flue vaccine.Approval for the vaccine, which contains a weakened form of the live virus and is sprayed in the nose, was previously limited to healthy children 5 years of age and older and to adults up to age 49.“The goal of preventing influenza is now more attainable with the availability of FluMist for younger children,” said Jesse L. Goodman, M.D., director, FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.“This approval also offers parents and health professionals a needle-free option for squeamish toddlers, who may be reluctant to get a traditional influenza shot.”Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/09/nasal_flu.html ~Sandy G.

MOZILLA FIXES QUICKTIME FLAW IN FIREFOX
2007-09-26 12:35:00
The flaw was first patched in July, but a hacker showed that it could still be exploited, and Mozilla says it cannot be fully patched until Apple fixes QuickTimeMozilla has fixed a critical bug in the way the Firefox browser works with QuickTime media files. The flaw, which was reported last week by hacker Petko Petkov, gives attackers a way to run unauthorized commands on a victim's PC. "This could be used to install malware, steal local data, or otherwise corrupt the victim's computer," Mozilla said in a security advisory published Tuesday.A July 2007 patch was supposed to take care of this type of problem, but Petkov showed how attackers could still run commands on a victim's system by tricking a victim into opening a maliciously coded QuickTime media file.Link to complete story: http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/18/Mozilla-fixes-QuickTime-flaw-in-Firefox_1.html ~Sandy G.

CROCS CLOGS AND ESCALATORS MAY BE RISKY MIX
2007-09-26 12:19:00
Reports of child injuries after shoes get stuck in moving stairwaysAt rail stations and shopping malls around the world, reports are popping up of people, particularly young children, getting their toes caught in escalators. The one common theme seems to be the clunky soft-soled clogs known by the name of the most popular brand, Crocs. One of the nation’s largest subway systems — the Washington Metro — has even posted ads warning riders about wearing such shoes on its moving stairways. The ads feature a photo of a crocodile, though they don’t mention Crocs by name.Four-year-old Rory McDermott got a Croc-clad foot caught in an escalator last month at a mall in northern Virginia. His mother managed to yank him free, but the nail on his big toe was almost completely ripped off, causing heavy bleeding.Link to complete story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20837380/~Sandy G.

Supply hasn't caught up with demand since the game was introducedLast Christmas’ almost impossible to get gift was the Nintendo Wii. It will pretty much be the same story this year, according to Nintendo of American president and CEO Reggie Fils-Amie.In an interview with the San Jose Mercury News, Fils-Amie said the company continues to have a difficult time meeting demand for the popular game console.“We have been sold out worldwide since we launched,” he boasted. “Every time we put more into the marketplace, we sell more, which says that we are not even close to understanding where the threshold is between supply and demand...Our inventory is lasting a day.”The executive says the company is working hard to make sure consumers will be able to find the game system in stores, but at this point he said he can’t guarantee Nintendo will be able to meet the demand.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/wii_holidays.html ~Sandy G.

FEDS SHUT DOWN MEDIA MOTOR SPYWARE SCAM
2007-10-04 10:27:00
More than 15 million computers infectedScammers who infected more than 15 million computers with destructive, intrusive spyware will give up $330,000 in ill-gotten gains from their venture to settle FTC charges that their scam violated federal law.The settlement will bar the defendants from downloading software onto consumers’ computers without disclosing its function and obtaining consumers’ consent prior to installation, bars them from downloading software that interferes with consumers’ computer use, and bars false or misleading claims. In November 2006, the FTC charged ERG Ventures, LLC and its principals with tricking consumers into downloading malevolent software by hiding the Media Motor program within seemingly innocuous free software, including screensavers and video files. Once downloaded, the Media Motor program silently activated itself and downloaded “malware” that was intrusive, disruptive, and made it difficult for consumers to use their computers.Link to comple

8 drug-free tips to avoid agony and painproof your day7 a.m.: Abide the alarm Snoozing in for more than an hour can disrupt your sleep-wake cycle, and anything that tinkers with your body’s natural rhythms may prime you for pain, says Lisa Mannix, M.D., a spokeswoman for the National Headache Foundation in Chicago. Commit to waking up (and going to bed) at the same time every day — yes, that includes weekends, too.7:45 a.m.: Get caffeinated If you often have a pick-me-up drink (coffee, tea or soda), by all means keep enjoying it, says Richard Lipton, M.D., professor of neurology at the Albert Einstein college of Medicine in Bronx, New York. HALLOWEEN A DANGEROUS HOLIDAY FOR KIDS
2007-10-24 18:46:00
Pedestrian accidents the biggest hazard for trick-or-treatersConsumer safety experts are warning parents to keep safety in mind when shopping for costumes this Halloween and to watch out for masks that may contain dangerous levels of lead and for costumes that may be flammable or hard to see at night.Safety experts agree that the danger of lead in masks is minimal, but urge parents to still be cautious.Safe Kids USA, a nonprofit that aims to keep children safe from dangerous products, spot-tested a few masks in the past and didn't find any lead on the inside, close to the where the mouth could come in contact, Alan Korn, director of public policy at the organization said. The Center for Environmental Health, a nonprofit that fights to keep Americans safe from toxins found in everyday products, also spot-tested some masks and did find lead, but “relatively low levels,” spokesman Charles Margulis said.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/halloween.ht

VIRAL INFECTIONS MAY PROMOTE OBESITY
2007-10-24 18:35:00
Researchers identify viruses linked to obesity in humans, animalsAre a sedentary lifestyle and a high-calorie diet, by themselves, to blame for the mushrooming obesity rate in the U.S.?That question has led some researchers to ask whether there might be other causes for this serious problem. In the October issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researcher Richard Atkinson, M.D., says that there is a growing body of evidence demonstrating that viruses may play a role in causing obesity in humans.“The cause of obesity is not a secret -- if you consume more calories than you burn in daily activity, you gain weight. What is interesting is that much of the obesity epidemic cannot be explained just by Americans eating more and exercising less. There are other factors at play, and viruses causing obesity may be one of them,” Atkinson said.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/obesity_virus.html~Sandy G.
