Get Fit and Lose Weight 2007-08-21 09:17:49 I am always amazed at the ads for this diet pill or that lose weight program. I think they are basically gimmicks. I come from the school of thought that if you are out of shape and are packing on a few pounds then you are eating too much of the wrong stuff and you are not exercising.
We all like things to be easy. Easy weight loss. Easy Money. But if you really want fitness to mean something you have to work a little for it. No pain, no gain, right? It’s true.
Maybe these weight loss pills will work for you. It doesn’t mean you’re getting fit. And that should be one of your goals. Lose weight and get fit. That should be what everyone strives for.
What’s will happen if you start to exercise? Your fitness and health will improve. Increased energy. You’ll feel better about yourself. What’s the worst that will happen? You’ll be tired. It’s the price you pay for not being lazy anymore.
So how do you lose the weight? Simple. Eat correctly. Sto Read more:Weight
New National (U.S.) Fitness Guidelines 2007-08-17 10:15:05 The American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association released new national guidelines on Aug. 1. which updated and clarified national physical activity guidelines which define the minimum physical activity required to maintain good health.
No surprise in the findings really.
The guidelines recommend that to maintain good health:
all healthy adults need moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity (such as brisk walking) for at least 30 minutes for five days each week, or vigorous- intensity aerobic physical activity (such as jogging) for at least 20 minutes for three days each week.
The guidelines also suggests that people should perform exercises that will maintain or increase their muscle strength and endurance at a minimum of two days a week. Of course if you want to lose weight it suggests to do more than the minimum.
It’s nice that these guidelines have been revisited and reiterated. I’m just not sure it will make a difference to those who aren Read more:National

Yoga Gaining in Popularity 2007-08-16 09:00:27 I was reading through the (online) news this morning and came across an article discussing the popularity of yoga. And of all places, in Chattanooga, TN. The newspaper, The Chattanooga Times Free Press, says that 10 years ago you would have been hard pressed to find too many people practicing yoga in the gyms across the city. Now their classes are filling up.
“Our yoga classes are consistently full; our lunchtime classes have 25 or more people in them. Demand is definitely up,” said Teresa Wade, fitness director at the Sports Barn downtown.
Demand is so high now that the the first teacher training certificate program is going to be launched in the area by Clearspring. Students qualify to become resisted yoga teachers with the Yoga Alliance. This will be convenient for those interested in becoming instructors because training had to be found in cities like Atlanta or Nashville.
It’s just another anecdote of how popular yoga has become in recent years. The more popular Read more:Gaining

Fit vs Fat: Economically Who Comes Out Better? 2007-08-15 09:23:40 The Hartford Courant newspaper did a tongue in cheek comparison of the price to be fit versus the price to fat. The comparison piece was of course ridiculous, but it did bring up some interesting points.
Grocery shopping
Buying healthy food is expensive. We know this because lower income people tend to bear the brunt of obesity much more likely than higher income people. Why? Because it is cheaper to buy unhealthy food. The Courant tested this theory and found in their unscientific study that:
fat, carefree shoppers have saved $6.80 over their health-obsessed counterparts. Does that mean people who embrace food brands with cartoon spokes-animals are not contributing as much to the economy? Hardly. Consider that the jumbo shopper is probably buying more of everything.
Recreation
Recreation for fit people differ from those of unfit people. Fit people like to go to the gym or ride their bike at the park. Unfit people like to park themselves in front of the TV. The Courant compared the pri
Easy Does it With Free Weight Loss Exercise Programs 2007-07-23 08:51:12 While a free weight loss exercise program might save you some money it might not be the healthiest and best way to get you to your optimal weight.
There are many different programs on the market with people promoting them as the best and there are also many opportunities for you to find a free weight loss exercise programs on the Internet but quite often these programs are written by people who don’t have sufficient knowledge for you to achieve the maximum benefits.
Nutrition needs to be taken into account and for this to be done correctly you really need specialist nutrition advice and that is what is quite often lacking with the free weight loss exercise programs that we have had the chance to have a look at online.
Some of these free weight loss exercise programs are particularly deficient in the nutrition and can quite possibly lead to ill health so be careful before you start on any free weight loss exercise program that you might find.

Loss Tip #1 – Burn It
Get moving. Simply get moving. Even if you’ve never exercised a day in your life, just get up and start moving. Instead of stopping at the post box to pick up your mail, drive your car to the house and walk back to get it. Use a push mower to cut the grass instead of a riding lawnmower. Is it harder? Hell yea! Do you want to lose weight then get off your butt. There are tons of things you can do. Just think how to get moving and GO! Try to incorporate at least Read more:Weight Loss

What Keeps You From Losing Weight? 2007-09-24 12:44:12 Came across this great weight loss suggestion about writing out a list of those things you really want to do but your weight keeps you from wanting to them or you are physically incapable of doing them because you aren’t in shape. The idea can be helpful for activities other than losing weight too.
Julia Griggs-Harvey suggests:
identifying the things you WANT out of life can serve as a great motivator in getting them.
Now that you have a few things listed, write down three actions you should take over the next month that would help you get closer to realizing the most important goal.
I would recommend you incorporate drinking more water, increasing your exercise time and limiting food vices in your list of actions. I am confident they will help you to realize any and all of these goals.
Now, set a plan to get each of the three actions ingrained in your daily schedule each day. Make specific tasks that will help you do this.
I like the idea of creating a list of what you want out Read more:Weight

National Run at Work Day 2007-09-20 15:44:05 Tomorrow is run to work day. Well, it used to be. The Road Runners Club of America used to have a day to try to get people to run to work. For me, that would not be possible. It already takes me 35 minutes to get to work. 20 miles. There is no way I could basically do two marathons in a day, much less expect to work between them. The RRCA quickly realized that most people could not run to work so they changed the day to Run @ Work Day.
The 2nd annual event hopes to:
encourage people to incorporate at least thirty-five minutes of exercise into their daily lives. This goal can be achieved by a running club, an individual, or a corporation hosting a running or walking event with the duration of at least thirty-five minutes before work, during lunch, or immediately after work.
I go to the Y during lunch hour during the week for weight lifting. I think everyone would benefit from getting out from behind their desk everyday, eating a sensible lunch and, at the very least, take a nice walk ar Read more:National
Fitness and Video Games 2007-09-17 08:56:54 My kids are not overweight. They are pretty active. They both play girls softball and are quite good at it. But they can be sedentary. The youngest watches TV. The oldest likes MySpace (yes, we monitor both activities). I do what I can to keep them moving but sometimes even I need a break, hence the TV and computer babysitting. Anyway, they both like video games. I observed something rather interesting this weekend.
We bought Dance Dance Revolution for the video game system. This is a dance arcade game that forces you to move around on this mat to the music. The kids love it. And what is so interesting is that the game kept them moving. Now it’s not like it will get them in shape and it’s certainly not like running to the fence and back in softball, but it’s definitely better than them sitting or laying around.
I do not think for a minute that kids shouldn’t be running around outside and rather playing video games. But kids are fat these days. They aren’ Read more:Games

Obese mothers equal overweight children. Medical News Today cites a study by the Archives of Disease Childhood (BMJ) that says a contributing factor of obese children is whether their mother is obese too. Genes may play a part, but I think children learn from their obese parents that it is OK to not be active and to eat unhealthy foods.

Britney at the VMA’s - Harsh Critics 2007-09-11 11:39:58 I’m not a fan of Britney
Spears. I think the girl is a mess in her personal life. She makes horrible choices and the people around her should be ashamed of themselves. Someone needs to help this girl gain control of her life. But the thing that made absolutely no sense to me was the accusations of gossip blogs and entertainment site the Internet over that said Britney looked fat or out of shape.
“Lard and Clear,” read Monday’s headline in the New York Post. “The bulging belly she was flaunting was SO not hot,” wrote E! Online.
What body were these assholes looking at? The one I saw looked pretty good for a woman who has had babies and really lives a fast and probably unhealthy lifestyle. Sure the outfit probably was not the best idea. She’s not 19 anymore. But she looked pretty darn good. I doubt there are many women who wouldn’t aspire to her body after having two kids.
I can’t believe I’m defending Britney Spears, but her b
Weight Loss Mistakes to Avoid 2007-09-10 13:56:11 If you are trying to lose weight and are not seeing the results that you had hoped for, maybe there are little things that you need to do that would help. Look at this list of 25 common weight loss mistakes that plaque people trying to lose weight and see if there are things that you can do to achieve your goals with a little improvement:
Having a defeatist attitude from the start. It’s all about attitude. Hate tell you but if you believe you can do it, you can. If you don’t, you won’t.
Starting something you can’t see yourself sticking with forever. Don’t stop just because you aren’t seeing the results you’d hoped for after a month. This takes time. Stick with it.
Starting something you hate from the start. Try to find some enjoyment with this. Find someone or group to help encourage you to succeed. You can make this fun.

Lose Weight Using Smaller Plates and Bowls 2007-09-09 20:17:43 Yahoo Health has an article posted that suggests that you can lose weight by using small bowls and plates. I suppose it can be a good way to help you keep your meal portions under control, but you will still have to develop some discipline when it comes to overeating. Even if you use small plates what’s to keep you form loading up second and third helpings to satisfy your cravings.
The article suggested that a study was done that people who ate off smaller plates achieved a 5% weight loss. Not terribly exciting but anything is better than none. The bottom line is that the more food you put in front of your face the more you are likely to eat. If smaller plates will help you from overeating, then by all means, dump the larger ones.

Pole Dance Your Way to Fitness? 2007-09-07 14:39:48 Women sexily thrusting their pelvis and rolling their hips to sexy background music, while wearing platform heels. Sounds like a great time at the local strip club doesn’t it? Not in this case. Apparently pole and erotic dancing is all the rage at some fitness clubs.
Core Fitness Studio in Scottsdale, Arizona offers weekly classes where the participants can learn erotic dance moves while burning calories. Personally I would have no problem having my wife participate in this type of fitness class. Pole dancing seems to have become more mainstream The students can certainly burn calories while they learn some sexy moves in the bargain.
My guess is the first step would be to have the guts to go to a class like that. But once you summon the courage to go, I could just imagine the self-confidence you would build for yourself. From a fitness standpoint, pole dancing should be on par with a night out dancing. I wouldn’t expect it to make you a fitness goddess solely from spinning Read more:Dance
AARP Gets Fitness Website 2007-09-06 15:31:56 When I go to the YMCA it is really hard not to notice all the retired folks working out. They are called the “Silver Sneakers” and they are trotting around the track or participating in all kinds of classes. I mean if you are in a class before the seniors class you better get out of the way when your class is done. They are coming in. Move!
Looks like it was announced today that the AARP has created a fitness website for seniors.
“the new website aarpfitness.org offers fitness tips, diet and nutrition advice and also shows members how to take advantage of discounts on personal training services from the American Council on exercise and gym memberships from Curves and Gold’s Gym.”
The new website will offer a lot of neat features as it was noted in the press release that the 50+ crowd is one of the most health-conscious groups in our population. Of special note was the tools that will help the seniors with weight loss and exercise plans. They will also find
Different Ways to do Squats 2007-09-05 12:28:31 Squats are my most hated of exercises. So tough to do. So hard to motivate myself to do them. I use machines. I use free weights. It doesn’t matter. It’s always a tough exercise.
These days I am doing squats not to build muscle mass, but rather to create muscle endurance. I am lifting 20 reps at a time, which at the weight I work, is to basically failure. I am using a machine and find the exercise tolerable.
There are numerous ways you can do squats. The basic squat is where you stand, legs shoulder width a part. Simply squat down until your legs are parallel with the floor. Sounds easy right? Well I see so many people screwing up this exercise, to the detriment of their back.
The main thing is to not look down. If you look down the tendency is to pitch forward which will cause strain to your lower back. You want to make sure you are looking up so the exercise is centered over your thighs and butt. Grab some weights when you are ready for strength training. You can use a b
20 Minute Workout 2007-10-09 14:59:22 Everybody has 20 minutes to spare. The number one excuse about working out is there is no time. Too busy. Well if you can’t carve out 20 minutes out of your day three times a week, then you just aren’t motivated to be fit. Even if you are fit, I’ve found that simple and quick exercise programs like this one to be great while traveling. After a long day out of town, then coming back to the hotel room, it is very difficult to get motivated to exercise. This one can get the job done.
Sean Kelleher was asked by Fitness Magazine for his ultimate 20-minute workout. Kelleher classified this one as a midday workout. Not sure why, so I’d go ahead and use this jewel of a program anytime during the day.
The equipment needed is at least 5-pound dumbbells or similar, a mat and 20 minutes. 13 exercises in 20 minutes for a great workout that will tone all the major muscle groups.

Get Rid of Belly Fat 2007-10-03 18:16:07 Are you having a hard time getting rid of belly fat? Yea, it’s the worst. It’s very difficult to rid yourself of too. And you can’t really spot exercise belly fat away either. It’s not that simple. It’s really more about your diet. Exercise is important of course but doing a bunch of crunches a day isn’t going to solve the problem alone. It’s hard and many people simply give up. Fitness Magazine reports that is the wrong thing to do. They say that belly fat is more dangerous than other types of fat like the flab on your hips, butt and thighs. It’s next to vital organs in your abdomen. So it’s time to get rid of it.
Fitness Magazine suggests that lifestyle choices directly affect the size of your belly. If you can stop the following activities you can begin to lose your belly flab:
Stop smoking. Nicotine simply prevents fat-burning in the abdomen.
Moderate your drinking. Isn’t one drink at cocktail hour enough?
Stop eating tra
Tips for Beginning That New Fitness Class 2007-10-18 10:07:09 Fit Sugar has some good tips on how to start a new fitness class. Going into something new is not always easy, particularly when you are trying to get into shape. I know a lot of people feel self-conscience like everyone will be looking at you or smirking because you don’t know the moves or how the class works. Well it doesn’t have to be so traumatic. Be confident and go to the class like you know you should be here. These tips will also help.
Choosing the Right Gym Membership 2007-11-08 15:55:21 This time of the year is bittersweet to me. I’m actually glad that fitness awareness begins to rise. People start thinking about exercising. They start thinking about goals and resolutions. But it also starts to fill up the gym. People are outside and the “resolutionists” haven’t descended on the fitness clubs. When the new year comes around the fitness gyms are just packed with people. I don’t care for it.
However, it’s good that people recognize they need to be doing something over the winter rather than just packing on the pounds. Unfortunately most people don’t stick to it and you see the crowds start dying out around the end of February. But if you are looking to join a gym, Forbes.com has a gym membership guide to help you decide which one to pursue.
They suggest you:
make sure you match your fitness goals with the right gym,
ensure the location of the gym is convenient and

The Importance of Fitness Program Success 2007-11-07 14:33:32 You have to start somewhere. So many times people who want to get fit simply do not start. When they begin their exercise program they may wonder why they did not do this all along. It is all about simply starting. Decide what excercise you think you will like and simply go for it. If you do not like it, try another. The bottom line is you have to simply get going. Start getting fit.
Starting a Success

When it comes to starting a successful fitness program, perhaps the most important step is the decision to get started. It can be difficult to start a fitness program, but simply getting started can be very important. There are many ways to start a fitness program, whether on your own or with the assistance of a fitness trainer.
One of the first decisions to make when deciding on a fitness program is what kind of fitness equipment you will purchase. There are many different kinds of fitness equipment for sale at a variety of different retailers, including stair stepper

Fattest Cities in America 2007-11-24 08:29:24 Earlier this month Forbes.com ranked the most obese cities in America
. They took into account 2006 body mass index data collected by the Center of Disease Control’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System which did phone interviews with residents regarding health issues. The results indicated that one-third of all Americans are obese. Sobering indeed. The study indicated the reasons for this overweight epidemic as many.
The causes, researchers say, are numerous. These include a diet of calorie-dense but nutrient-deficient food found in grocery and convenience stores, public planning strategies that favor motorists over walkers and cyclists, and simply bad habits.
And while the causes are many, the costs are enormous. Obesity’s associated costs add $93 billion to the nation’s medical bill annually. Each year, 112,000 people die from obesity-related causes, and the condition is responsible for an increased risk of chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, cancer and hea Read more:Fattest
