Use Proper Form When You Workout 2007-12-14 11:31:51 I am a stickler for proper form when working out. Nothing chafes me more that watching someone work out and cheat themselves. I just don’t think people know. From simple pushups to bench presses it seems a lot of people just do not try to achieve the best possible form.
Let’s take the push up. I see far too many people only going down half way. There is no extension. The military would definitely snicker. The proper push up is simple. You go down until your biceps are parallel with your back. Elbow to elbow is straight across. Then you push up. Maybe you don’t want to completely lock your elbows but you want to come pretty damn close. It sucks. It hurts. It’s hard. But that full range of motion works you triceps. Your biceps. Your shoulders. Your chest. It’s the best overall workout for your upper body. The dude in this video has excellent form:
It doesn’t matter what exercise you are doing. I believe that you should avail yourself to a full range Read more:Proper

Fitness Goals and Exercise Tips to Build the Body You Want 2007-12-13 08:44:42 Everybody needs a plan if they want to get fit. For the beginner getting in shape seems like such a daunting thing. They see really fit people or look at all the shiny gym equipment and get intimidated. More advanced gym rats are simply spinning their wheels trying to keep motivated or push past whatever plateau they have reached. I think going in with clearly defined goals will help both groups of people achieve the results they hope for.
I came across a fabulous article on Yahoo Health by Michael Mejia. He is a fitness trainer and he has some awesome ideas on how to get the most out of a workout.
For losing weight a beginner needs to do a circuit routine doing 10-12 exercises, with 10-15 repetitions, with little rest between the exercises. A couple of circuits should be enough. For advanced people trying to lose weight he suggests doing supersets where you do two exercises back to back then 60 second rest. But you work out different areas of the body with the two exercises. Walking for Fitness 2007-12-19 10:12:15 I’m not a fan of walking for fitness. You are going to see a ton of articles on the benefits of walking as the new year rolls around. Why am I a walking snob? Because I think most people can do better. Need to do better. Walking
is simply too relaxing to provide much benefit. Yes, I know reports say different. They indicate 30 minutes, 3 times a week, helps improve your fitness. I sort of disagree.
These walking workouts are great if you are morbidly obese. Are just starting out an exercise routine. Are an older citizen. No, I do not think that someone that is 70 pounds overweight needs to jump out there and start running or riding a bike long distances. I think that walking is the beginning. Not the end. Unless you are too old or impaired to do much more than engage in a walk, you need to aspire to work towards something more than a brisk walk.
If you have never exercised before. Sure, go out and start by walking. But at some point think about jogging. Bike riding. Heck you cou
Fit for the New Year 2007-12-26 09:20:21 Today is the day every website from here to Yahoo is going to be telling you how to get in shape and lose weight. It is just a few days until the New Year, like that is the only time worthy of starting an exercise and healthy diet routine. The good thing is you can get some really good tips on fitness over the next couple of weeks. Some that caught my eye this morning:
New Year’s weight loss: 6 Tips - 6 ways to lose weight and balance your diet correctly. Think walking and lots of water.
5 Food Fixes for Flat Abs -Â Eating healthy can help flatten your tummy.
Sculpt a Beautiful Backside - 4 exercises to build a nice butt.
There are even stupid fitness articles like this one posted suggesting getting fit while you go back out shopping.
New Year’s Resolutions Approaches 2007-12-24 10:34:39 Hate crowded workout days. Today everybody apparently descended on the cycling class. Thought I would get up and hit the 8:30 class. I usually get there 15 minutes early and start my ride so I’ll get in a full hour. So I get to the Y early. Went to get my badge scanned and asked for spin class pass. I was told the class was already full. Dammit!
OK, fine. There is a spin cycle on the exercise floor so I tool over and get mounted up. I don’t mind because I know what I need to do to get the exercise I need. Plus it gives me the added benefit of listening to my own music instead of the crap the teacher uses. So I no longer spin my first pedal when the class teacher comes down and says she needs the bike for class. Is that OK? “No it’s not” as I’m getting off the cycle, gathering my stuff and walking away. At this point I’m pissed and used too much energy being mad that I decided to just go back home. I didn’t feel like riding an exercise bik Read more:New Year

Wanting to Get Fit By May 2008-02-14 08:34:01 Went to group power lift class night. The crowds are beginning to dwindle as usual. I was in fact the only male in the class this time. The instructor said something about that and I replied that the ratio was perfectly fine. A couple of women were standing around before class discussing working out and [...]
The 20 Minute Workout is Crap 2008-02-11 10:36:41 I believe the 20 minute workout is virtually worthless. How do I know this? I don’t really but common sense tells me it’s simply not enough time to get in shape. That it is just another gimmick to try to push people into working out when they would rather spend time doing other things.
There are [...] Read more:Minute

What Gyms Have to Offer 2008-02-07 10:28:35 I have a few friends and acquaintances who do not share my enthusiasm over what gyms have to offer for getting fit. Now, they do understand the value of getting fit and being healthy, but they do not see the value of paying to go to a gym to exercise. And it’s a valid point. [...] Read more:Offer
How Long Does it Take to Get in Shape? 2008-01-30 15:43:48 The question always comes up: how long does it take to get in shape? Hard to say. If you have never exercised before it may in fact take quite a while. But usually I would give myself 6 weeks to really find your way in getting that exercise workout to become effective. Yes I know [...] Read more:Shape
Group Exercise Classes for Muscle Endurance 2008-01-24 15:36:39 For the last couple of months I have been pushing myself pretty hard with my exercise workouts. I have been attending two to four exercise classes a week for cardio work and/or muscle endurance. And I love it.
About two years ago I was doing the typical heavy lifting. Three sets of 10 repetitions. It was [...] Read more:Group

Another Fitness List 2008-01-20 09:56:58 I must have come across hundreds of websites stating that one of your goals for the New Year should be to get fit and lose weight. Apparently people have been hammered with this knowledge so much that they are immune to the suggestion. To this day only 48 percent of people surveyed bother to workout [...]
Teens Should Exercise to Avoid Obesity Later in Life 2008-01-14 12:09:46 Here’s a shocker: a study by John Hopkins has concluded that,

This was reported in U.S. News and World Report. Pretty much says [...] Read more:Change

4 Weeks to a Firm and Fit Body 2008-05-22 14:17:16 Yahoo Health posted what I think to be a very sensible workout routine for anyone trying to get in shape. Note though, the author mentions that [...] Read more:Weeks
Leg Workouts for a Killer Body 2008-06-29 13:04:36 Here is my theory on having a fit body. It all begins with the legs. If you have nice legs then the rest of your body is going to look nice.
