Destination Miami: Planet Sushi
2007-08-22 10:42:00
I think it was the atmosphere and the layout of this restaurant that caught my attention first. It had a very hip and trendy feel to it. The furniture was monotone, but the splash of pinkish light from the sushi bar in the back made the restaurant vibrant. The restaurant was pretty dimly light in the inside, but the big glass windows let a lot of light in during the day. They allowed the people passing by, to check out what customers are eating, and what’s going on in the restaurant. Planet Sushi is located on 860 Washington Avenue, in Miami Beach. It’s a French sushi restaurant. I believe they have multiple locations in Paris, and are pretty well known there.Oh, and did I mention the television displays on the wall? There’s like four television screens on the wall. Two of them were showing video clips of fashion shows in Paris. Very interesting indeed! The other two were actually connected to the sushi bar. It gave an overhead view of the sushi bar. That way, you can see the su

Destination Oak Ridge: Jalisco Mexican Restaurant
2007-08-17 12:05:00
I was only spending one night in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and I wanted to make sure I picked a good place for dinner. I was pretty limited in my choices, since I didn’t rent a car and couldn’t explore much area. Luckily, there were a bunch of restaurants on the road near the hotel. There was a restaurant that caught my attention.Jalisco Mexican Restaurant212 S. Illinois Avenue, Oak Ridge, TNThis restaurant was located conveniently across the street.I figured, Mexican food would be a great choice. I’ve never really had authentic Mexican cuisine from an actual Mexican restaurant before, and so I really wanted to give it a try.I was a little skeptical at first. From the looks on the outside of the restaurant, I did not know what to expect from the food or the service. I had to take a closer look. After looking at their dinner specials outside the entrance, I decided it was worth a shot. The inside was very decorative, with Corona banners hanging from pillar to pillar. There were critic

Sonic America's Drive-In
2007-08-15 21:06:00
I’ve seen commercials for Sonic Drive-In on television before and I’ve seen advertisement for their specialty frozen drinks like the Sonic Blasts. However, I’ve never actually seen an actual Sonic before. I remember googling it once, and discovered that the closest one to New York City was located about 125 miles south, somewhere in Pennsylvania. Definitely, not close enough.I just came back from a short trip to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I stayed at the DoubleTree hotel in Oak Ridge. Too my surprise, right across the street from me, on 210 S. Illinois Avenue, I saw a display sign. SonicI was very excited. I carefully found my way across the street. (I swear those pedestrian street lights don’t turn green. It also seems like no one walks on the sidewalk. Everyone drives everywhere.)I’ve never been in a Drive-In. I’ve done Drive-Thru, but Drive-In was something new to me. I looked around. So how it works is (in the case where you come in a car), you’d park in one of the parkin

Destination Miami: China Grill
2007-08-08 20:54:00
We read from the newspaper about a very well decorated, almost gourmet-like Asian fusion restaurant located within walking distance from our hotel. We had to check it out. China Grill located on 404 Washington Ave. The first time we walked by, we accidentally missed the entrance. But when we entered the restaurant, we were amazed by the décor. The atmosphere was very pleasant. The lights were nicely dimmed. The eating area was accented by the candles on the tables and the lanterns on the wall. The host walked us to our table, which was in a room on the side. The room was small, but had an extremely beautiful and extravagant dragon hanging from the ceiling over the center table. We sat at a booth by the window.I really liked our rectangular plates and sauce dish. Our waitress explained to us that all the dishes on the menu are served family style. This means, the portions are relatively large, each dish is shared and we eat off our rectangular plates. While we explored the menu, we orde

Destination Miami: Jerry's Famous Deli
2007-08-07 11:30:00
Just a couple of blocks away from our hotel, we come across Jerry ’s Famous Deli. It was around noontime, and we were looking for some fast comfort food. Some diner breakfast food would be just great.Jerry's Famous Deli, located on 1450 Collins Avenue, is open 24 hours a day. Their menu was pretty instense, from eggs and omelettes, to pizzas, sandwiches, and desserts. Corn beef hash with two eggs and potatoesPancakesThe food was satisfactory. It was average diner food. It would have been the perfect place to go to, after a night of partying or drinking. It would definitely fulfill the hungry stomach. The prices were a bit high, for the quality of food. They also included the gratuity charge. The service was not spectacular, but acceptable. I got my coffee refills and was very pleased. The most amazing thing about the deli was the huge bar and extensive alcohol assortment they had. The bar was extended all the way from one end of the restaurant to the other.

Destination Miami: Le Bon
2007-08-02 22:32:00
It was the fifth night in Miami and we were craving for some seafood. Miami’s got to have great seafood. Therefore, we went towards Lincoln Road again, in search for some seafood restaurant that would satisfy our craving. We came across Le Bon Restaurant on 723 Lincoln Road. “Le Bon” means “It’s good” in an Italian dialect. At the front door, there were hosts and hostesses advertising their dishes, waving their menus, trying to grab potential customers as people walked by. I think their specialty was Belgian-American seafood. There were a lot of people eating outdoors, and the seating filled up the front area of the restaurant as well as the middle of the seat. They sold us when we saw the words seafood and restaurant. We took a seat indoors to see what the inside was like. (We also suspected that the restaurant next door, which was more Italian pasta-like, was actually the same as this one. We suspected it had the same ownership, same workers, but just different menus. Destination Miami: Mr Chu's Hong Kong Cuisine
2007-08-02 14:49:00
While browsing through one of those tourist booklets, we came across an ad for Dim Sum. There was Hong Kong pushcart styled Dim Sum in Miami . We figured it would be interesting to check it out. Now, I’m a very big fan of Dim Sum.Traditionally, Dim Sum is thought of as a food you eat when you go “Yum Cha”. This “Yum Cha”, which means drink tea, is the whole event where you sit around in the restaurant, drink tea, order mini plates of food, and engage in conversation with your friends. You can also just sit, relax, and read a newspaper or something. Going out to eat Dim Sum in the US is very different compared to eating it in Hong Kong or China. So how does it work?Generally, it goes along the lines of this:You are seated at your table, and you request your favorite tea selection. They will then brew it and bring a teapot to your table. You are also given a card with a table number and boxes on it. The boxes are labeled Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, or Specialty. Another night at along the Ocean Drive, we came across the Oriente . This restaurant is right on the first floor of the Cardozo Hotel, on 1300 Ocean Drive. The restaurant and the hotel are both owned by the famous Gloria and Emilio Estefan (along with many other things they own in Miami ).What caught our attention was their menu selection. They offered a Cuban/Asian fusion selection of foods. (If you haven’t noticed, I’m a big fan of fusion food, when it’s done right.) Also, we read about this restaurant in the newspaper earlier in the morning. They mentioned some interesting dishes that we were thrilled to try. Here’s our dinner at the Oriente:Appetizer:Warm bread rollsRemarks: They served these complimentary bread rolls, while we drank our wine and awaited our food to come. Breakfast at the Royal Palm Hotel, Miami
2007-08-01 19:19:00
We stayed at the Royal Palm Hotel , located on 1545 Collins Avenue. It was a great spot, since it was at the center of a lot of local attractions. It’s right next to the beach for one.Inside this hotel, they have the Britto Restaurant. I believe they’re known for their Italian seafood cuisine. So one morning, we wanted to try out their breakfast. We noticed that they advertise a $27 breakfast buffet. However, for the two of us, plus the 18% additional gratuity, it would have been one killer expensive breakfast for two. Therefore we decided to scrap the buffet and go with ordering two separate less pricy breakfast dishes.Salmon lox served with bagelLox is pretty much just thinly sliced salmon fillets that’s been smoked or cured.LOOKY: wow, look at all those colors (above average)TASTY: it’s a wake up party in my mouth (above average)Remarks: The salmon lox were extra fresh and extremely tasty. The lady at the front desk also suggested Ocean Drive as a good area to dine at. Ocean Drive runs along the beach and is filled with tons of hotels, restaurants, and bars, most of which are pretty famous. For example, there’s the Clevelander. It’s a hotel, a bar, and a crazy hot spot, known for their wet t-shirt contests and swim wear contests during spring break. There’s also the Casa Casuarina, the scene where Gianni Versace was murdered in 1997.It was our third night and we were in the mood for some Cuban cuisine. I was browsing through a tourist book and came across Rumba Palace , a Cuban restaurant, located on 600 Ocean Drive, known for their delicious Cuban cuisine, exotic cocktails, live Latin music and dancing. Reading that, we had to go over and give it a try. Here’s our dinner at Rumba Palace:Choice of Beverage:MojitoCocktail drink originated from Cuba. Sushi Siam (located on 647 Lincoln Road)It was our second night in Miami , and we decided to check out another restaurant on Lincoln Road. Sushi Siam. Just as the name of the restaurant suggested, it offered a combination of Japanese and Thai food. There was a lot of outdoor seating. It was my first night at Miami . I was tired, grouchy and hungry when I arrived at the Miami International Airport. My flight was delayed for a lovely 2 hours and by the time I got off the plane the sun was already down. Once we got to South Beach, we checked into the hotel, dropped off my luggage, and quickly began searching for the nearest hotspot to find some dinner. The lady at the Front Desk of the hotel recommended to head over to Lincoln Road. The night view of Lincoln Road was pretty amazing. It’s this long road filled with restaurants, bars, lounges, retail stores and more. Most of the restaurants offer outdoor seating, and so the street is lit up very well. There were a large variety of foods to choose from.As we started walking down the road, Sushi Samba caught my eye. It was full off orange and yellow lights. (It’s located at 600 Lincoln Road.) There was plenty of outdoor seating. (I really enjoy outdoor seating. However, in New York City, outdoor seating might not always

Ken Kee Restaurant, a small restaurant located in Chinatown with lots of yummy Cantonese and Hong Kong style dishes on their menu. Two things that caught my eye!1. Cheap prices! 2. Authentic Cantonese fast food (not the Americanized ones you find with names like "Happy Dragon Lucky Chinese restaurant")!The wait was long (well, we did have a party of 4-5). The restaurant was pretty crowded. The service is probably not the best out there, but a very typical Chinese restaurant. They're not rude, but I think they just concentrate on serving the food rather than pampering the customers. It kind of makes you feel like you're in Hong Kong or something.Appetizer:Deep Fried Man-touDeep fried buns served with a small plate of condensed milk on the side for dipping.LOOKY: mouth watering (above average)TASTY: if you weren't so filling, i'd eat more of you (average)Remarks: One of my favorite dishes to order during Dim Sum. Taste of Chicago
2007-07-18 08:30:00
So while I was in Chicago , I went to check out the Taste of Chicago at Grant Park in downtown Chicago. It's an annual event, pretty much this huge food festival where lots of local restaurants sell their specialty dishes!! In fact, I believe it's the world's LARGEST food festival. This year it was held from June 29 to July 8. Along with the food vendors, they also offer live music and performances. How is works is you first purchase these food tickets. Then you wander through the park, exchanging the tickets for whatever food or drinks you can afford. And so, for $21 we got 33 tickets to roam around with. The place was packed! So, here I share with you my journey through the Taste of Chicago. Now, even though there's 33 tickets in hand, we knew that we probably won't be able to buy too much food with it. We definitely won't be able to try something from many vendors. Therefore, We had to choose wisely.First stop, SEAFOOD + BBQ!OOOO Crab legs! They were really delicious at first. How

Trip to the Kwik-E-Mart
2007-07-16 23:18:00
So, I had previously mentioned on my 7-11 post, that a selected number of 7-Elevens were transformed into Kwik-E-Marts, like the ones in the Simpsons.Well, earlier today, I made a trip to Times Square, in New York City in search of this Kwik-E-Mart.I was very amused but it didn't very resemble the Kwik-E-Mart as shown in the cartoon. Sure, there were squishees, pink donuts, Buzz cola, and lots of Simpsons memorabilia, but I guess it was just a little odd to have the Kwik-E-Mart in the middle of the city. I hear that the Kwik-E-Mart in Chicago resembles the one from the cartoon the most (according to the picture from the official 7-Eleven website, there's even the parking spaces in front of the store).Buy 3 for the Price of 3! Awesome!Anyway, I had a lot of fun running around the store with my camera, snapping away! I was very impressed with the decorations inside the store. I liked all the cartoon character cut outs, and the Springfield posters and flyers around the store. And, the

Today is 7-11 Day!!!
2007-07-11 08:35:00
Slurpees are one of my favorite frozen drinks ever since I was a little kid. It's so refreshing and those brain freezes you get when you drink it too fast... wow, who can forget those. On 7-11 Day, 7-Eleven stores gives out complimentary 7.11oz Slurpees!!!(Too bad they don't have one here where I am right now... closest one is like 30+ miles away.)It's not often that I encounter a 7-Eleven store. I know they do exist in New York City, but I just never really come across them.Recently, while in visiting Pittsburgh, PA, I saw one and I just couldn't resist but to pick up a 12 oz. Slurpee. I like the Coca Cola flavor best. I guess it's because it doesn't leave color stains on my teeth or my tongue afterwards. So, what I've heard is that since the Simpsons movie will be coming out later this month (on July 27... which I'm also very excited about), a selected number of 7-Elevens have been turned into Kwik-E-Marts. Inside these Kwik-E-Marts, you would find food items from the cartoon,

LookyTasty: The Beginning
2007-07-10 09:02:00
Lately, I've been traveling quite a lot. Traveling means that you'll probably not be cooking and will end up eating at quite a few restaurants. Whenever I go out to eat, I always liked taking photos of the dishes that I order. I think it has something to do with capturing the moment, before I rampage through the dish and chow it all down. (Actually, I find myself rarely able to finish the food that I order, portions are often too huge... but that's besides the point here.)Anyway, I ended up with a collection of photos of some good looking and great tasting food. What else to do with these photos, but to share it with people through an online food blog!!In addition to postings about my adventures and visits to restaurants, I'll also document my experiments in the kitchen. I like to eat, but I also like to cook. I'm not the best cook out there, but I love to learn and try new things. Every since moving out, I've made many attempts in the kitchen. Sometimes, I get recipes from a coo

Sweet and Sour Pork

Here’s a simple recipe for some quick and easySweet and Sour Pork.Lee Kum Kee is known for their many Chinese sauces and condiments. They offer a line of mini sauce packets, which makes cooking popular Chinese restaurant food an easier task in your own kitchen. Behind each package, they conveniently list all necessary ingredients, along with detailed directions. They offer specialties like Ma Po Tofu, Beef Stir Fry, and many more. One all time favorite, I’d have to say, is Sweet and Sour Pork.Ingredients (as listed on the package):2 tbsp vegetable oil1/2 lb pork tenderloin cubed1/2 red bell peppers1/4 cup flour1 tsp salt1/2 cup pineapples chunks2 tbsp egg beaten1 package Lee Kum Kee Sweet & Sour Sauce for Pork/Spare RibsThe portions described above will result in about 3 servings. We had to feed more people. Therefore, we increased the portions. There were about 4 decent sized pork chops cubed. In addition, we replaced the red bell peppers with green and yellow bell peppers. Bean Curd Tofu Stew
2007-08-27 20:54:00
I’m a big fan of vegetarian cuisine and the art of imitation meat. I’m most intrigued by Buddhist vegetarian foods. Their dishes look like meat, but are actually made of a combination of tofu, wheat gluten, and other amazing ingredients. (For example, making vegetarian roasted pork from wheat gluten.)One ingredient commonly used in Asian vegetarian dishes is bean curd (tofu). It’s made from curdled soymilk (similar to how cheese is made from milk). It comes in many forms and textures.Dried bean curd skins are a form of bean curd. It’s found in Asian grocery stores often in the dried goods area. It’s yellow in color. They come in either rolls or wraps. Here I present to you a little recipe that utilizes dried bean curd rolls in a stew-type dish. It’s inspired by the vegetarian dishes my mother makes at home. It’s very simple, and tastes pretty good according to my taste testers. Here I present to you Bean Curd Tofu Stew: (Makes about 4-5 servings)Main Ingredient:Dried Bean

Dick's Last Resort?
2007-09-26 23:39:00
I heard about a restaurant chain called Dick's Last Resort . Apparently, the theme of the restaurant is to be the restaurant with the worst service and outrageous wait staff. Hence the "last resort". They have multiple locations in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, San Antonio, Myrtle Beach, San Diego, and Las Vegas. Since I'm closest to Boston, I definitely plan on making a trip there and have a dining experience at that location. The energetic waiters and waitress behave rudely and spontaneous, in a comedic way, towards the customers. It's all for fun. In turn, the customers can talk back and yell at the wait staff. It sounds pretty fun.I searched the internet to gather some info on this restaurant. Some people hate it because the service is so terrible. But then again, what can you expect, it's their theme. Some people get intimated by the wait staff, because they were unaware of the restaurant's theme or are just too shy. Others have a great time screaming and laughing. They also offer l

Flan: Part II

I was a little disappointed with how my flan came out. It ended up looking like a chunky cheesecake and tasted like a ultra sweet egg custard cheesecake. It wasn't bad, though, considering it was my first try.Looky:I was sad when I discovered that the caramelized sugar crystallized onto the pan when I flipped it over. Unfortunately, my flan did not obtain that nice brown caramel layer on top and only the custard portion of it jiggled its way onto the pie.Tasty:It didn't taste bad or anything, but it was a bit too much on the sweet side. The taste of the condensed milk was a too overwhelming and the cheesecake made the flan way too thick and creamy.Well, here's the recipe anyway.Recipe for Creamy Flan: (source: Poughkeepsie Journal pictures: LookyTasty.com)Ingredients:1 cup granulated sugar1 8-ounce pkg of light cream cheese4 large eggs1 12-ounce can evaporated milk1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk1 tsp vanilla extractDirections:1. Flan, Part I
2007-09-13 23:41:00
Flan (also known as caramel custard or creme caramel) is one of my favorite Spanish desserts. Earlier last week I came across a recipe for this savory and super tasty treat in a newspaper. I was very excited and was looking forward to making flan for the very first time. It's been such a buzy week, but I finally had the chance to spend some time in the kitchen and give it a try. After a quick run to the local Price Chopper, I laid out all the ingredients and started to prepare this flan at about 10:12pm. As of 12:30am, it is sitting in my refrigerator getting chilled.More to come:1. Post the recipe I clipped out of the newspaper2. Post the pictures taken of my struggle to make delicious flan3. Remove the flan from the refrigerator and feed them to my testers4. Listen to what my testers have to sayTo be continued...

How much can you fit between two pieces of bread?
2007-09-11 13:42:00
For lunch today, I had a 6 inch roast beef sub. It was nicely made, but looked pretty wimpy. While eating, I was reminded of a restaurant I ate at over the summer. They were known for serving these humongous, insanely filled-up sandwiches. (A bit greasy but a very good deal.) In addition to the meat (or fish), lettuce, tomatoes, and onions and all that, they managed to fit some lunch sides like coleslaw and French fries into the sandwich. The restaurant I'm referring to is Primanti Brother's Restaurant. (website)I managed to dig up some photos of the sandwiches.I don't know how my friend there managed to pick it up.It filled me up very quickly. I knew from the beginning that there was no way I was going to be able to finish it.Well, this restaurant has multiple locations in Pittsburgh and opened a couple in Florida. The one I went to was not the original one. I went to the one near University of Pittsburgh. But...

Japanese Beef Bowl
2007-09-03 15:02:00
We were in the mood for some simple Japanese cooking. The following recipe was based on a recipe found in a Japanese cookbook. We made a few modifications due to our lack of the original ingredients. Usually, sake and Mirin cooking sake would be used. However, since we did not have any in the kitchen and was too lazy to go buy it, we decided to substitute it with rice vinegar and sugar.Japanese Beef BowlIngredients:½ lb beef (we used Sirloin)½ yellow onion1 cup of chicken stock4 tbsp rice vinegar3 tbsp sugar3 tbsp soy sauce2 bowls of cooked Japanese ricePreparations:The beef should be thinly sliced (as thin as you can find them) and cut into pieces about 2-3 inches long. The onion should be cut lengthwise into about 6 wedges.Directions:1. In a pot, combine the chicken stock and 2 tbsp of rice vinegar. Add 1.5 tbsp of sugar and bring it to a boil.2. Put the chopped onions in to the pot.3. When the onions become soft, add the pieces of beef into the pot.4. When the beef appears to cook (

Making Caramel Apples at Home
2007-10-19 08:04:00
Caramel apples have always been one of my favorite treats to eat during carnivals, fairs, and those types of things. Ever since that day I had my braces removed, I've been craving for some caramel covered apples. I've never made them myself, so I decided to give it a try.First stop was the supermarket, to pick up all the goodies. Three simple ingredients did it all: Granny Smith apples, Caramel, and Peanuts. At the supermarket, we debated between two options:1. using packaged caramel wraps specially made for caramel apples, or2. buying a plastic tub of caramel and melting it ourselves. We decided to give the caramel wraps a try. Looking at the directions printed on the back of the package, the process seemed simple and easy. It had just enough wraps for 5 apples. It came with the wooden Popsicle sticks. Plus, cleanup would be a breeze! At home...First, we washed the apples with warm water to remove the wax coating. Then, we crushed some peanuts using a spiky mallet on a wooden cutting bo
