My Hard Drive Is Click click clicking! Help what is wrong? 2007-08-21 12:02:00 Our faithful reader Michael writes in from New Jersey:HELP!My hard drive (my largest storage drive h:) just started to make these light intermittent clicking noises. Sometimes the drive does not show up in bios nor in My Computer. Then it magically reappears after a few restarts - but its getting louder and now there is another click. So its like click - click - LOUD CLICK - whirllllll. What should I do Backup? Ghost? Raid? I have somewhat of a budget and im home sick today! HELP! Did I Say HELP!Normally a clicking sound coming from your machine is a Very Bad thing. It is probably a precursor to full out drive failure, so my immediate advice is "BACKUP WHAT EVER DATA IS ON THAT DRIVE!" ASAP! Any way you can, as quick as you can! Copy the contents to another drive burn dvd's, cd's, zip disks whatever it takes. (See here how The SlothMan created a simple image for backup) Realize that after another restart the drive COULD never spin up again! If the drive really fails, you're out of
I Bring You The Top Ten... Um Er... Top Nine Technology Feeds - The BEST of the BEST! 2007-08-21 08:23:00 I spend around two hours a day on my daily commute into Manhattan Most of my trip is below ground and as such I don't get a signal. Micro$oft Update Alternatives + Top Ten Reasons NOT to use Windows Update! 2007-08-20 12:01:00 How many of you out there are not fond of the Microsoft Update
site? I am sure there are many of you. How many of you are fed up with the Genuine Advantage nonsense every time you want to make sure you are up to date? Not to mention if you have a "legally questionable" Windows
or Office installation. Don't fret, there are other methods for getting your updates so you can stay patched up. I will talk about two of my favorites. The first one I like is called Autopatcher. Every few months they create a core distribution, almost like a service pack, which contains all previous patches. Then every month they come out with a big update that you install to keep your system patched up. Autopatcher is really nice if you don't like to reboot. How many times have you built a new machine and installed Windows from scratch, then tried to patch it up? You have to reboot about 3 or 4 times before everything is patched up! With Autopatcher, everything patches at once, and you only have to reboot onc Read more:Alternatives

Hp's revolutionary print anywhere service - Not revolutionary nor can it print everywhere. Discuss amongst yourselves. 2007-08-20 08:35:00 Is printing documents from your mobile device somewhat of an adventure? You have to get to a meeting and your doc is sitting on your handheld. The copies weren't printed and sent over by your Secretary - What do you do? There are plenty of work-a-rounds and hacks but nothing definitive to allow you Mr. Mobile to print directly from your mobile device to ANY printer ANYWHERE. Well I guess not any printer... OH and I guess its not Anywhere either.Hmm so what is so revolutionary about it? It seems HP hosts your documents and will send you a SMS code that allows them to be printed to "Local Printers"? Does that seem strange? Will that be Kinkos and Staples or Misses Johnson down the hall with the neat-o color printer? HP is claiming Web 2.0 but this seems like an idea that would have wowed them 5 years ago.We have a bluetooth printer in the car and wait here is a shocker - My windows Mobile device has BLUETOOTH also! Check your web design in TONS of different browsers, totally free and deliciously open source, multi-platform, fully-configurable screenshots. 2007-08-20 00:41:00 Alot of web design
ers have probably heard of Browsercam's pay service that allows you to test your web design in a multitude of differentbrowsers
and platforms using a distributed screen-shot service. But I, personally have not subscribed to browser cam simply because I have the ability to preview in the browser variants that I need myself. The primary browsers I'm to code for are firefox 1.5 and above and IE 6 and above. I usually manage to accomplish this using remote desktop and the such. But now, as I totally
predicted, there has emerged a challenger, that has managed to distribute the process amongst many different (donated) platforms. This emergence can be found at https://vo4.browsershots.org/, where an ingenious developer named Johann C. Rocholl has taken on the brave competition with Browser cam. The system is not totally complete yet, however it is functional for the purposes it was created for, and is totally usable towards those ends. The main drawback is the 30 minute d Read more:Check

AtA gets reviewed + A Word From The Admin 2007-08-19 08:20:00 Good Morning Boys and Girls. I wanted to share with you this glowing review we got from the guys over @ TechWag here.A good system administrator is worth their weight in gold, anyone that can run around the networked systems and fix the bizarre arcane things that happen on a daily basis, regardless of operating system, is one of those folks that end up becoming a key person in an organization. If you do not love them and cherish them, then the company is going to loose probably one of the most valuable assets they can own, a decent system administrator. We were told about a site called “Ask the Admin
” that is right over here, a while back, and as we started looking at it, the advice is good, and really realistic in terms of dealing with a number of issues that seem to crop up daily. If you need or want a generalized question answered, you can ask them. If you want to find the answer to a question that your boss is asking, like should we use full or partial RSS feeds, then you can fi
Restore Your Newer Dell Machine to Factory Default Settings Is As Easy As Control F11! 2007-08-18 09:38:00 Happy Saturday Faithful AtA Readers! No you are not having Deja-Vu, we pushed this back up to the top for two readers - Joe in Massapequa and Arman out in Saudi Arabia. We received a number of emails regarding Dell and their no recovery cd policy by default. Yes you need to request the CDs now for an additional modest fee. At first we were all like... Whaaat the fu..... And then we realized before we could finish our profanity that there was a piece of paper that looked like a recovery cd that shipped with the laptop talking about a recovery partition. This turned out to be the easiest return to factory default on 10 Inspiron 630m's. These machines are in the field and don't get anything other then antivirus from us. So a custom image for them was on my mind but it wasn't really necessary. I set all the machines up to restore and then created a batch script on my server to push the antivirus and change a few settings. So the magic key combination if you missed it in the title of th Read more:Restore

Flying Phones: Dash crippled and revived by the same insanity. 2007-08-17 15:07:00 So, some of you read this post a while back about my dash refusing to read my memory cards. That got me so pissed off, I wanted to go back to the good old beeper days... What you probably didn't know was that same day I was speaking to someone and got pretty agitated and when I get agitated I talk with my hands. Long story short My poor little AT&T Dash went flying out of my hand like a Frisbee. It had a few scratches here and there but, it was working and I didn't think anything of it.I also didn't want to associate that with the memory card not working. But today I was even more worked up then normal and my phone again went flying out of my hand causing my partner to duck as it slammed into the wall behind him.I laughed... He didn't. He said "You could have taken my damn head off! Take it down a notch man!" I looked at it and said "I bet you my memory card works again..." He said "I bet that whole damned thing is all foxed up." Guess who was right??If you guess that you wouldn' Read more:Flying

Student’s Guide to Buying A Laptop - Summer 2007 2007-08-17 14:43:00 I was recently helping my brother decipher what to look for when buying a new laptop, and put together the following guide. The way I see it, there are probably more people out there who could potentially benefit from some of the information provided, so I’m including it here for reference. It’s geared towards students since the majority of laptop buyers around this time of year are in fact students, so I tended to shy away from the really expensive ultra-high performance notebooks. Let's get down to it. So in light of the fact that all the big retailers are offering great “back to school” sales, I think your best bet is definitely to buy from a local store such as Best Buy, Circuit City, or CompUSA. If you can find a better deal for the same laptop online, by all means buy it there instead, but make sure it comes with the same warranty, accessories, etc…1) Pretty much all new laptops come with at least 1 year of factory warranty which should cover anything but self-induced Read more:Student

Would you take a free dvr plus free pro tivo like services with the inabililty to fast foward through commercials? 2007-08-17 08:51:00 Apparently Cable companies are trying to step up and save their commercial business. Upgrading FROM Vista to XP 2007-08-16 02:10:00 Like any geek, I am not one to judge a piece of software until it lands on my desk and I have a chance to play with it. Windows Vista
was no exception, and since it came pre-loaded on my new laptop, I couldn't say no to what I would call a "test drive." Let me say now that I have already crashed!Flashback a few months ago, to me picking up the box which held my new laptop from Staples. An HP with a 17 inch widescreen, the dv9250us model. It has a gig of ram, 120 gigs of storage, great graphics, and a dual-core 64 bit processor. I was excited indeed. When I got home, I booted up, and was greeted with Vista Home Premium (32 Bit on a 64 bit laptop...how cheap of HP). After getting the annoying out-of-the box experience thing out of the way, I went to doing my normal fresh install procedures (install Firefox, run XP-Antispy, among other things). As I proceeded to install software, I was already irritated by the UAC - User Access Control - asking me every 5 seconds if I was sure about what
Ubuntu Servers hacked Windows Fan Boys snicker loudly. 2007-08-15 20:14:00 Linux users always smirk and snicker about other OS's when it comes to security. But this article coming in from Zdnet shows Ubuntu
's own servers were compromised and used to attack other machines over the net. How did this happen you ask?? Simple - human intervention is needed to up date these servers and they were largely unpatched and vulnerable. Servers are only as secure as their administrators that administer them! Remember that the next time when people are arguing what operating system is the most secure...More than half of Ubuntu’s production servers had to be pulled offline after a security breach caused those servers to actively attack other machines.According to a notice in the Ubuntu weekly newsletter, 5 of the 8 servers that are loco hosted had to be shut down after an investigation showed a variety of security problems. The servers were found to be missing security patches, using insecure protocols (FTP without SSL) to access the machines and without upgrades past br Read more:Windows

Antivirus Fight Club 2007-08-15 09:51:00 Found this interesting article on ClamAV's website.Antivirus Fight ClubHere's the interesting tidbit:The “winners” in last night’s contest were ClamAV, Kaspersky and Symantec. All three tools caught 100 percent of the viruses they encountered. F-Prot and Sophos caught 94 percent; McAfee caught 89 percent; and GlobalHauri, Fortinet, and SonicWall caught 61 percent.I am not shocked to see Symantec where it is, because let's face it...it is still best of breed. But McAfee which is considered to be one of the big dogs to be so low is awful. But a free, open source product in this test coming in @ 100% accuracy is VERY nice and applies some pressure. So what are you using for antivirus??? Might want to think twice about it now. EDIT: Rule Number One Of Anti Virus Fight Club - Never TALK about Anti-virus Fight Club!!!Check out our RSS feed.

Full RSS Feeds VS. Partial Feeds. Are there benifits? 2007-08-14 09:16:00 During our Tuesday morning commute I read this article from TechDirt speaking about RSS feeds. A lot of sites offer partial feeds and usually just the headline to try and persuade you to read the article on the site exposing you to their advertising. Sites like CNET do this and it pisses me off and seeming I read these articles in a RSS Reader on my mobile phone while I am on the train I can not just click through. So only the BEST of the BEST articles get read by me - You know just the ones that stick out in me head later in the day.TechDirt as well as AtA use full RSS feeds because one we don't have ADs on our site as we are not about making $$$ and Two We are here to help our readers. I need to open a port on my router or firewall. How do i do that? What is that? This tutorial is for you no matter what router you are on but, it uses the WRT54G as an example. You should be able to use the knowledge to work with most modern routers. To begin there are a few things you need to do. First as a prerequisite you need to know the difference between external and internal ip addresses. Now you see that you can't get to your internal addresses also referred to as your NAT IP from outside without some work. You are in a protected kingdom. (Pardon the corny references but they work well!) The inside of your network is like the inside of your virtual castle. The only way in is by opening a port sort of like building a virtual draw bridge. Quick Wipe Hard Drive's Using Lysol 2007-08-24 13:59:00 Have you ever needed to quickly blank a hard drive? Now I'm not talking about for security purposes, for that I like using DBAN. No I'm just talking about one quick wipe down to erase the drive? I do, especially when I really want to test a disk image. I want no previous instances of anything on the drive, to really be sure my image is perfect.Well, at my school they have a really old, yet effective program, called Lysol. I tried Googling it, and I couldn't find any place to download it. I did find some forums where people mentioned it, but no place for download. Well, it's time to rectify that! I obtained a CD ISO of the program, and I am making it available for everyone here!Lysol is pretty friggin' awesome. It will wipe a drive in about 5 seconds! That's right, only 5 seconds!
