Election Misery Roundup
2006-11-03 18:56:41
So backwards have we become under George Bush that scientists are desperately hoping for a Democratic win in Tuesday's midterm elections.  With Bush's assault on science, it's no wonder. From global warming to stem cells, from genetically engineered organisms to toxic chemicals, Bush has silenced or manipulated science to serve whatever his political agenda is.  This is an attacks on our health we can't accept. Another scumbag Republican:  This one repeatedly beat up his mistress and so arrived at a settlement with her last year, but with a large cash incentive to keep the whole matter silent until after this year's elections.  Republican Don Sherwood repeatedly abused Cindy Ore.  But remember:  the GOP is the party of morals. Speaking of GOP morals, review the GOP list of shame.    In fact, on scandals alone the GOP should lose congress.    And if you don't believe us, even conservatives say the GOP must go. Of course, the electorate in the  "greatest democracy in the world"

Shrill and Milquetoast weren't very popular.  They were, well, annoying. Even the people who did hang around them were also, well, annoying. These other guys were always mean to them, kicking sand in their face and beating them up.  They knew what to say to get people to like them. But then people got tired of the bullies.  The bullies told too many lies and forced people to go to church and took over other schools.  So people started to look at Shrill and Milequetoast and their annoying friends.  But then they got over-confident, said stupid things, and well, people started to not like them even more.  See, people never liked Shrill and Milquetoast and the Annoyings, they started to like the bullies less.  Wise up.

Editorials from around the world: Bush is a loser
2006-11-01 06:35:14
A sampling of press from around the world should show Americans that their president's foreign policy is a dismal failure.   Whether you define the country of origin an "ally" or "foe," the message is the same:  President Bush is a complete disaster and his party should be voted out.  You'd be hard pressed to find any major media outlet anywhere in the world that has anything positive to say about the Bush administration.  Here's our most recent sampling: Europe - InterPress Service News AgencyU.S. military adopts desperate tactics "We have no role to play because the Americans always prefer violent solutions that have led from one disaster to another." UK - Financial TimesU.S. democracy needs reform If Americans believe that these mid-term elections represent a model of democracy for the rest of the world, they should think again.UK - Daily TelegraphOur troops will continue to die as long as Bush and Blair allow it How long can this go on and how long will Nato troops and Afgha

Government Abuse of Power - Using the IRS, Health and Human Services, the Judiciary, and the TSA to further your agenda In the Bush administration's usual reality-challenged world, their Health and Human Services abstinence program is now being expanded to include people up until age 30.    "The message is it's better to wait until you're married to bear or father children.  The only 100% effective way of getting there is abstinence" said Wade Horn, assistant secretary for family and children at HHS.  Note to religious fundamentalist nuts:  Over 90% of unmarried people between 20 and 30 are having sex.  The cat's out of the bag on that one. Salon has an intersting piece on political contributions to George Bush and other GOP politicians by judges who were appointed by them.  The "appointments for money" apparently is legal, so it's no surprise the GOP has exploited it as part of their plan to take over the judiciary. Internal Revenue commissioner Mark Everson has said the IRS w

Monday Misery
2006-10-30 19:07:45
Even military.com, a military news website for members of the armed forces, is running an editorial by Knight Ridder's Joseph Galloway entitled Ruining America about -- you guessed it -- what a disaster the Iraq war is and how the president is doing nothing about improving the situation there. An interview you would never see in the U.S. appears in Spiegel.  It is with Pulitzer-prize winning journalist and CIA expert Ron Susskind.  Susskind describes in detail some of the "interrogation methods" used by the CIA, what Bush knows and pretends not to know, and more.  Also in Spiegel is another interview with Bruce Hoffman, terrorism expert with the Rand Corporation.  He argues that the al Qaeda is stronger than before September 11. Onto the vote, the Miami Herald is reporting that votes for Democratic candidates are already being changed to Republicans in early voting.  Read about it and other scary problems. David Weigel of ReasonOnline writes an obituary of sorts entitled I just blo

Keep This Guy Off the Airwaves
2006-11-06 20:17:15
Sorry, but this guy doesn't help the cause.  If you're trying to win in Tennessee, Montana, Virginia and Missouri, why are the Dems running this guy 24/7 the last few days?   What kind of strategy is that? When Murtha, Biden and Obama were making the rounds, the Democrats' poll numbers were high.  As soon as Kerry and Dean were trotted out, the poll numbers went south.  What are the Democrats thinking?  Howard Dean was just interviewed on CNN.  When asked "what is your prediction for tomorrow" he replied "When I've made predictions before I've been wrong, so I'm not going to make any."  Kyra Phillips followed up by saying "But Ken Mehlman was just on and he predicted victory for the GOP, you won't predict it for Democrats?"  And you know what Howard Dean said?  He still said he wouldn't make predictions.

Are Dems Ready to Win?
2006-11-06 19:25:43
Pre-Election Check ListDid you remember to Keep your party leaders from staying stupid thing? Showcase your most popular party  members, especially towards the end of the campaign? Display confidence, yet not hubris? Develop a media strategy to counter the pre-announced release of last minute news? Remind voters that with six years of a president and congress from the opposition party that voters can blame their dissatisfaction on that group alone? Counter the tag-lines that you know will be lobbed at you? Acknowledge that voters want to know what you will do differently, and why they should trust you with their vote? Work overtime at consolidating your early leads? Capitalize on scandals related to your opponents? Find your balls? For the Democrats, the answers to all of these is No.   Which begs the question if they are ready to win, or even deserve to. 1.  No organization can stop its members from speaking or controlling what they say.  Yet it seems when your most recent

Election Eve

The polls are just too tight to tell.  We don't think the Dems have done enough, and we got chided for sharing our opinion.  What's up with that, anyway?    Seattle PI found that dead people voted  in the current election via absentee ballots.  They're concerned now about election integrity. These are some very grim facts related to voting in this country, courtesy Dark-Truth.org.  Please read this.  It won't leave you feeling very chipper. And look at VoteTrustUSA's latest report on voting machines.  They also have Occasionally we're encouraged by the polls.  But then we read about people like Martha Bobbitt and we get depressed again.   The country is full of Martha Bobbitts.

The election results were overwhelmingly positively.  So many creeps were swept out.  But one in particular deserves special notice. Richard Pombo is from California's 11th congressional district, in the San Joaquin Valley.  He has got to be one of the most vile soon-to-be ex-members of Congress.  Pombo is a right-wing, environment-hating freak.  Key objectives during his now-ended term:  overturn the endangered species act; allow commercial whaling; sell public lands to mining, energy and logging companies; allow drilling just about everywhere (arctic, offshore, etc.); gutting of environmental protections; allow banned toxic pesticides and chemicals.  You get the picture.  Add to this scandal and a terrible voting record on social issues and you've got one fucked up congressman. Pombo was in charge of the House Resources Committee.  He used his position to help pass legislation to defile the environment and help corporations in every way possible.  Pombo was named the number one

Friday Round-up
2006-11-10 22:35:48
Bush and Cheney each wore blue neckties today, in another "gesture" of bipartisanship.  Suddenly they have nothing but kind words for Pelosi, Reid and other Democrats.  Remember, these are the same guys who a few days ago said a vote for a Democrat was a vote for terrorists. Wall Street Journal suggests that the endless Republican gerrymandering may have backfired on them. Lane Hudson, who first posted the Mark Foley IM thread on his blog, finally speaks out.  The guy has balls."It's the Washington culture that allowed this to happen.  Now we know the FBI, a host of media organizations, Republican leadership — all were in possession of this same information. And no one did anything about it."GMWatch (genetically modified) reports that a class action suit was filed against Donald Rumsfeld, Monsanto, NutraSweet and the American Diabetes Association.  The suit alleges that the artificial sweetener is a deadly neurotoxin unfit for human consumption.  Donald Rumsfeld was President of S

Rove shows what a real wanker he is Karl Rove show no signs of reality setting in to his altered-universe despite last week's election results. Rove gave his first interview following last week's election to Time's Mike Allen.  In what now seems to be an almost juvenile, and thus pathetic, attempt Rove tries once again to spin the election results in a way that shows that the Dem victories really didn't mean that much and Rove is famous for his political statistics, and his team has come up with an array of figures to contend that the Republicans' loss of 29 seats in the House and six in the Senate is not so out of whack with the historic norms. In all sixth year midterms, the President's party has lost an average of 29 House seats and 3 Senate seats, according to these figures. In all sixth-year midterms since World War II, the loss was an average of 31 House and 6 Senate seats. And in all wartime midterms since 1860, the average loss was 32 House and 5 Senate seat.Allen dutif

Reaching Backwards
2006-11-14 08:03:48
Forget about any hopes for progress.  We're now reaching back over 15 years to an earlier failure, George H.W. Bush.  The single-term, do-nothing president who was thrown out of office.  The one who said there was a lot of economic opportunity in the country because of a help wanted sign he saw at a fast food restaurant.  The one who threw up on Japanese leaders during a tragic trip there, dragging executives from America's auto companies, which were in as bad of shape as they are now.  The one who was amazed at supermarket scanner technology, which was then already a decade old.  The one who didn't push thru any meaningful domestic agenda, flip-flopped on taxes, never understood voter frustrations over the economy, didn't finish the job in Iraq, never addressed unfair trade practices around the world, and did nothing for HIV/AIDS.  That George H.W. Bush. After initially ignoring daddy and seeking advice from the bible-thumping neo-con crowd, W is running back to daddy for help.

Genetically modified bullying
2006-11-16 06:31:39
Bully Monsanto is trying to get Mexico to plant its  genetically modified corn, but Mexico is resisting.  Mexico's agriculture department banned Monsanto and other companies from planting any GM corn in an effort to preserve the pure and ancient varieties Mexico has been growing for hundreds of years.  But this is unlikely the last word on the matter, as Monsanto is standing firm and is won't give up until it gets its way.  Bullying elsewhere:  These companies, via the American Soybean Association, are in the process of bullying the EU over their restrictions on GM soybeans.  They will not be satisfied until they own all major crops the world over.

Cat Fight

How fucking embarrassing.  They're not even in office yet and they're already fighting and carrying on. We were worried about Pelosi, then she seemed to rise to the occasion.  But we're worrying again.  First, she misjudged the Murtha thing, and now there is a cat fight with Jane Harman.  Apparently because of some petty personal shit, Pelosi wants to make sure Harman does not ascend to chairwoman of the House Intelligence Committee, which she would as the ranking Democrat on the committee.  Foreign policy experts are begging Pelosi to change her mind, as Harman has excellent credentials and a proven track record as a centrist.  But Pelosi is being stubborn. Get ready for more drama, this is only the beginning.

Brain Injuries and Iraq War Vets
2007-09-25 12:15:10
The U.S. Army is testing the brains of troops to be newly deployed in Iraq to help them "baseline" a soldier's cognitive abilities and thus make it easier to diagnose and treat possible head injuries incurred later while stationed in Iraq.  The program is mandatory at the 101st Airborne Division in Kentucky and will spread elsewhere in the coming months.  This program is not as it appears. First, some background.  Traumatic brain injury, or "TBI" is one of the worst and most common traumas coming out of Iraq, earning it the title of "signature injury" with an estimated one in five expected to come back with some form of brain injury.  Symptoms are difficult to pinpoint for the patient and evaluation and testing is challenging for doctors.  In fact, sometimes there are no symptoms initially, yet the damage is very severe nonetheless.   For the first time, there are more head injuries than abdominal injuries. TBI is

Idiocy and Cowardice
2007-09-21 17:56:10
Which is worse?  Idiocy or cowardice?  The Democrats are displaying both.  This whole bit with moveon.org and its "betray us - Petraeus" ad. Perfect time to remind people of Swiftboat, and that the Republicans can "dish it but can't take it." Perfect time to remind people that Bush had other Generals who had different views on Iraq, but got themselves fired. Perfect time to remind people that just over a year ago was another big report, one that we all had to wait for before we could make a judgment on the war.  The Baker Report.  Remember that?  Oh, that's right.  The conclusions weren't what Bush wanted, so even that disappeared. Perfect time to remind the public that a general should not be doing a politician's job, and that in and of itself makes his performance suspect. But, no.  The Democrats caved in and voted to denounce moveon.org's ad, fearful that somehow not standing up against it would make them loo

It's not loyalty
2007-09-17 00:19:00
The Lapdog Media has been in overdrive this last month. First it was its endless coverage of the greedy but folksy mine owner Murray.  The mainstream media dutifully repeatedly reported his ridiculous assertion that the mine collapses were the result of earthquakes.  Not one news outlet dared to call in a USGS expert to perhaps dispel the lie or even question that Utah isn't exactly known for its seismic activity. Next was the resignation of Attorney General Gonzales.   CNN had a long bit about how "lonely" the president must be feeling with all of this resignations (Karl Rove being the other).   Not one looked at the obvious political motivations behind the resignations (neither Rove nor Gonzales are doing the party any good just over a year before an election), and none even considered Bush might have known about them in advance.  Can they be this stupid? Most recently was the inane coverage of the Petraeus report, dutifully repeating
