Momo At 2 Months
2006-11-01 18:18:38
Ayeed Momo, my “ajik” is two months old today! Cheers, Momo! Drink up and finish your milky ok? That’s very expensive stuff you’re drinking. And drink a lot you do! No wonder you’re so big now.

Normal Programming To Resume
2006-10-31 17:35:26
Her clothes have been ironed. Her iPod fully charged. Ayeed’s stuff packed. Mummy’s going back to work today. After nearly 2 months at home taking care of Ayeed and me, Mummy’s re-starting work and going back to the office. She says she only got 2 months of maternity leave because she hasn’t been with her company long enough, but she says her boss will try to give her another month of leave. We’ll see …. I think it’s a good thing for her to be going back to work, although she would have liked to start in another few weeks’ time. But it’s ok. And it’s a nice change for her too. Being at home everyday and taking care of a cranky baby is just not Mummy’s cup of coffee. It has been a stressful and really tiring couple of months for both Mummy and Daddy. Not to mention boring for Mummy who’s been having an overdose of Oprah on TV. Hopefully with Mummy being able to get away from Ayeed for a few hours while she’s a

Booboo, The Toddler Bully
2006-10-31 08:15:44
Ajab, the Toddler Giant has had his fair share of tantrums and they don’t call it the terrible-twos for nothing. A less well-known fact is that Ajab is also the Toddler Bully . He doesn’t go around terrorizing kids at the playground (he hardly goes there), he doesn’t steal other kids’ toys, and he doesn’t whack other kids and mash their face with their ice-cream. No, no … when he’s around other kids, he’s very well behaved, except for the occasional fight for the same toy that all kids go through. Ajab doesn’t bully kids. He bullies his Atuk. Part of the problem is his stubbornness and his fierce determination in getting what he wants. Coupled with a bad temper and an over-indulgent grandfather, you’ll get a recipe for disaster. Let me tell you how bad he can get, this little terror of ours. An example: Toy car rolls under the cabinet. Toddler Giant cannot reach it. Toddler Giant screams. And screams. And grabs the nearest toy

My Hari Raya So Far
2006-10-29 16:45:15
I’ve enjoyed myself during this year’s festive season. Especially this weekend when I was allowed to eat and drink almost whatever I wanted. I had kuehs, cookies, chips, kerepeks, cakes, but best of all I had all kinds of fizzy drinks, especially Coke. We didn’t go to a lot of houses, but I really enjoyed travelling all over the place and seeing all those cars on the road. Ayeed missed everything because each time he was in the car or taxi, he fell asleep. On Saturday I went to Atuk’s and Nenek’s place in Clementi. It’s been a long while since I’ve been there, but I wasted little time in messing up the living room. Uncle Ruzaini had kindly brought out lots of toys and books for me to play with and read, and I had them all to myself. Ayeed was busy being cranky and drinking lots of milk and sleeping. He should stay awake more so that he can enjoy the atmosphere around him. It was pretty much the same thing today. Some of Mummy’s best fri

I Wanna Wear My Crocs!
2006-10-29 02:30:58
But they don’t fit me. Daddy. next time you’re out shopping for my shoes, bring me along, ok? I’ll make sure they fit so that I don’t have to wait long before I have to wear them. Now I have to be contented with wearing them at home.

Discovered On The Web: iPod Case For Kids
2006-10-27 19:24:02
Don’t they look cute? iPod cases for kids called Tadpole by Ifrogz. It’s made of silicone, has a protective screen and has two handles for tiny hands like mine. Cool! Now …. if only Mummy and Daddy would let me touch their iPods. Maybe I should get one for myself. I do have lots of money (with more to come) from my Hari Raya collection.

If The Clothes Fit, Wear It
2006-10-27 17:08:00
Remember this from last year? Me working the runway, Hari Raya 2005. This was me yesterday. Nani made me wear the same outfit because she had guests coming over to her place yesterday. I’m still too sexy for my shirt, too sexy it hurts! It still fits!! But the sleeves are a little short, though. Hmmm … am I not growing enough? I’m even wearing some of my clothes that was bought a year ago.

The Mystery Of Co-Sleeping
2006-10-26 06:17:31
And when I say ‘mystery’, I mean ‘I just don’t get it’. I can’t understand (neither does Trin) how some parents can let their children (note the plurality) sleep in the same bed with them every single night for months and years. I mean, don’t these parents desire some space and privacy for themselves? I think it’s ok if your kids have had a bad night and have trouble going to sleep for any number of reasons from a tummy ache to monsters under their beds, and you allow them to get under the covers with you for the night, or even two. But every night? Last night was the first night in our ongoing developmental programme for Ayeed whereby we made him sleep in his own cot in the kids’ room with Ajab. We started around 9pm. The test was to see whether the two kids could behave well sleeping in their own room. The real test started at 10.30pm when Ajab went inside for his bedtime (we allowed him an extra half an hour of TV time because he

Hari Raya - A Photo Essay
2006-10-24 17:46:00
Nearly noon, kids, half-dressed, getting restless waiting for Mummy. A feed before leaving. The sleepiness too much to bear, Ajab took a nap at his Nani’s place. The usual family portraits were taken. The toddler refusing to sit still. Stories and banter were exchanged. Food in abundance, an all-day feast after the month-long fast. Guests came and went - some famous. Others less so. Our family gatherings are always memorable. Full of fun and laughter. As the night draws in, we take our leave. And put away our good shoes and our booties, to be worn again to the next gathering.

Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri
2006-10-23 19:23:48
To our fellow Muslim friends and family, the Giants household (me, Ayeed, Mummy and Daddy) would like to wish SELAMAT HARI RAYA AIDILFITRI, MAAF ZAHIR & BATIN A special shout-out goes out to my fellow Bambino friends. For those of you with teeth, go easy on the goodies. For the Bambinos with no teeth, enjoy your porridge or whatever goop you’ll be fed with, ya? Next year then can eat, ok? A very special hello also goes out across the Causeway to Aunty Rose who very kindly sent me a spanking new baju melayu and a romper for Ayeed. Daddy was pleasantly surprised when he opened the mailbox and found the package addressed to me. And on petang raya too! What good timing! Thank you again, Aunty Rose and a happy Raya to everyone over there, especially the four musketeers, Simba, Faie, Mohsin and Milla!

"Twas The Evening Before Raya
2006-10-23 17:52:04
In the evening before Hari Raya, as usual, all of us would head on over to Nani’s place for our Raya-eve dinner. I delayed getting dressed so that I could watch Pocoyo until the end. Ayeed was relaxing on Mummy and Daddy’s bed. He was already dressed. He pooed three times this afternoon! We took a cab to Nani’s place and when we got there, I was surprised and a little confused to find nice patterns on the walls, which had been bare when I was last there. Soon the azan was heard on the radio, and everyone broke fast for the last time this Ramadhan. It also meant Hari Raya was here! There was yummy briyani on the table! Everyone enjoyed the briyani. I’m not happy because all I had was salmon porridge that Mummy brought from home. Hummphhh!! Ayeed didn’t fare much better, because all he got was milk. But he can’t complain, because he has no teeth yet. I’m hoping for more goodies tomorrow at Yot’s place. But I have a feeling Momo’

Our First Greeting Card
2006-10-20 18:54:35
Yay!! Ayeed and I had our first greeting card from a fellow Bambino and it came from a long, long way away - all the way from California, in fact! Thank you, Alya, Aunty Salizah and Uncle Samsudin for the very nice card. Mummy said even the envelope is worth keeping because it has a limited edition Alya stamp on it. Cool! I love it! Note: Parts of the card have been “edited” to protect the innocent.

Of Packets Red And Green
2006-10-19 18:31:58
Woohoo! It’s just a few days away from that time of the year when I will get lots of them - green and red and all sorts of coloured packets. But it’s not the packet itself that’s important; it’s what’s in it - MONEY! Daddy says because of the generosity of the gahmen, I have more money in the bank than Mummy or Daddy. I think they’re not telling the truth! They just don’t want me to think they have lots of money because I might be tempted to ask them to buy me more toys. Speaking of red packets, Ayeed got one yesterday courtesy of the kind aunties and one uncle at Daddy’s office. I’m sure Ayeed appreciates it a lot. Thanks everyone! Now, if I could just find out where Mummy hid it …… hmmmm …. Ahhh …. the sweet smell of money! *sniff, sniff*

Booboo's Separation Anxiety - An Update
2006-10-17 05:04:08
On the way to MIL’s place this morning, I kept reminding Ajab that he’s going to his Nani’s house and that I’m going to work but he can’t follow me. I kept praising him and telling him that he’s a good, brave boy and Mummy and Daddy are very proud of him. I doubt he understood what I said. He has been through this routine for nearly two years now. Each morning we’ll send him to MIL’s place. He’s rarely shed any tears when we leave, preferring to go straight to his toys, without even looking back at us. I guess it’s the slight change in routine that’s upsetting him, because Mummy’s staying home with Ayeed and not sending him to his Nani’s house. Or maybe it’s because of Ayeed he’s feeling a little left-out. When we’re home, we try to spend as much time as we can with him, setting aside special “Booboo-time” just for him. But there’s only so much we can do with me having to p

Don't Leave Me This Way
2006-10-16 11:21:33
Typical morning. I got up. Cried. Daddy heard me over the monitor. Carried me out. On the bed. Gave me milky. Changed my nappy. Said goodbye to Mummy and Ayeed. Kiss, kiss. Hopped into a cab. Nani’s place. Got there. Went inside. Refused to close the gate. Wanted to follow. Daddy going to work. He said bye. I cried. And cried. And cried some more. Standing at the now locked gate. Sad. I feel. (I think I’m having abandonment issues / separation anxiety

Bye Bye Basket, Hello Co-Sleeping (For Now)
2006-10-15 17:07:26
As of yesterday, Ayeed has stopped using the moses basket. He somehow feels that the basket is too narrow for him. In actual fact, there’s still room in the basket for him to use it for a few more weeks, but for the past few days and nights, whenever we put him in the basket, he’d sleep for a while, then start squirming and crying. So the basket has been placed in the kids’ room, in reservation for my cousin and his wife who will be having their first baby sometime next month. At the moment, Ayeed is co-sleeping with us. We’re giving him a couple more weeks before moving him permanently to his cot. There have been lots of studies stating the benefits of co-sleeping. It reduces bedtime struggles. Parents of co-sleepers know that children who sleep in their parents’ room have no reason to be afraid of bedtime. As they grow older and move into their own rooms, they have positive, secure images of sleeptime. They have no reason to equate bedtime with being al

Like I Fell And Got Squashed By The Ladder
2006-10-14 03:55:33
I didn’t actually got hit by a ladder, but like the wise Malay man once said, sometimes you fall and you get squashed by the ladder. I think it means that sometimes you have bad luck and one bad thing happens to you, to be followed by another bad thing. First I got sick and had that runny nose (it’s still running). The yesterday, while at Nani’s house, I fell and somehow hit my lip on the table, cutting my big fat lower lip. It was painful. It was EXCRUCIATINGLY PAINFUL!! But I’m ok now. I just want my hair back. Give me back my curlies…

Freaky Friday: Vintage Posters With Evil-Looking Kids

I found this website that sells vintage 1950s posters with illustrations showing, among other things, freakily evil-looking kids staring at food. Yikes! The other posters from the site (www.plan59.com) aren’t so bad. They’re actually quite cool. Except for the demonic ones like the one above.

Straight? Curly?
2006-10-12 19:09:54
Can’t really tell yet. Straight , I think. Curly later? That’s what happened to Ajab. All straight like Liam Gallagher, then a few weeks later it was curly like the Toddler Giant he is today. In other Momo News, Ayeed seems to have outgrown his moses basket. He can still fit in it, but he doesn’t seem to like sleeping in it anymore; waking up quite often when he’s placed in it. The experiment to get him to sleep in his cot is still ongoing. At the moment, we’re putting him in the cot when he falls asleep at night. His bedtime is sometime between 8pm and 9pm. He’ll sleep for an hour or so in his cot until about 10pm when his brother comes into the room for his bedtime. Ajab will of course make a lot of noise, often squeezing his hand through Ayeed’s cot grills to touch or pat him. Ayeed will then wake up since he’s such a light sleeper and we’ll move him to our bed for the rest of the night. Yes, Ayeed is co-sleeping with us for now.
