Microsoft Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade Pack 2007-08-17 11:54:28 Windows Anytime
Upgrade is an innovative service by Microsoft
to help users upgrade to higher versions of Windows when they find the need to. It was, and still is, a great idea by offering an easy and cost-efficient method of upgrading at any time, removeing some of the contemplation to initially purchasing any versions of Windows Vista
, in doubt you might “grow out of it”. Previously available only through purchase online, now it also comes in a box.
Initially, the program was restrictive because users could only purchase the upgrade online through one channel, Microsoft, limiting both availability and choice. But now it appears that “Upgrade Packs” you can touch and feel can be bought from many IT retailers. It doesn’t seem like anyone took notice, but according to Amazon these have been available since May 1.
Apart from a pretty cool looking and informative packaging, it’s not clear what these packs actually contain. This might be the “DVD Read more:Windows

Windows Home Server, officially available August 27 2007-08-17 10:17:21 If there’s one computing server product every enthusiast and home-user should be excited about, that would not be Windows
Server 2003 Datacenter Edition for Itanium-Based Systems, instead it should be Windows Home
Server - codename “Q”. Last month, WHS was released to manufacturing aiming for distribution “in the next couple of months” and retail availability “this fall”. The official availability date is now most likely Monday, August
27th 2007.
On the Microsoft Support Lifecycle website, a listing for Windows Home Server
states the general availability date as 8/27/2007, and mainstream support retirement date as 10/9/2012. This however does not suggest OEM products such as those from HP will ship then - still expected to come “fall” (September).
In this case, general availability most likely refers to the DVD package for system builders and other OEM channels. If you’re one of those people who want to build your own Home Se Read more:available
Microsoft Opens Up Windows Live ID 2007-08-17 04:42:42 Microsoft has announced the release of Windows
Live ID Web Authentication. This means that WLID (formerly known as Passport) is now opened to third party websites to use as their authentication system. Any Windows Live
user can potentially log in to a website that implements Web Authentication. Interestingly sample implementations are available in the Ruby, Python, Perl, and PHP open source languages amongst others — tested on openSUSE 10.2 but expected to work on any platform that supports these languages. More details are available in the SDK documentation.

My Computer Keeps Restarting Without Warning 2007-08-17 02:47:06 Does your computer restart without any prior warning? You do not need to worry about this. We have the solution for you. This problem could happen at many levels. So lets start step by step.
Are you able to boot into the OS? If yes then at least your “Restart Switch ” isn’t getting short. But could be a super sensitive switch or a bad power switch too which creates the problem.
Now check if your computer is set to standby/sleep after certain time. Maybe it has problems going to sleep and can’t wake up, or restarts upon awaking. Disable this in your OS as well as in the BIOS (if there is an option). (more…)

Firefox about:config Fixup 2007-08-17 02:42:46 By default, the about:config preference UI automatically detects localized preferences and displays the localized setting. But if you are a hacker working on customizing the default settings, this can be very confusing. This little extension “fixes” the default behavior to display the chrome URI of the localized .properties file.
Works with Firefox

Windows Vista : Hiding your Desktop Icon Text 2007-08-17 02:30:03 Windows Vista
are full of cool, awesome icons, but the only drawback is the icon text. It’s UGLY, but don’t fret there’s a way to remove that with some easy renaming here and there. Now Here’s the way to make it disappear simple and easy.
Just right-click on the shortcut, and choose Rename. Hold down the Alt key and type in 255 on the numeric keypad. If you using a laptop like I do, turn on numlock and blast away by using the number keys on the keyboard like you are typing regularly.
Now this gets tricky on the first shortcut on the desktop, press Alt+255, but as you progress to the other shortcut you must do it cumulatively. In theory…Alt+255, is a blank space so you can’t rename all with just a single Alt+255 so for the next shortcut, you’ll need to enter Alt+255 twice. Then for the next (third) shortcut enter Alt+255 thrice… and so on for the proceeding shortcuts.
To reversed the process, if you wish to choose to bring back the Icon Read more:Desktop

VistaBootPro 3.1 multi boot with Vista 2007-08-17 02:05:00 The operating system Vista
does not use traditional Boot.ini of the former versions for the dualboot (or the multiboot). Indeed, Microsoft set up a utility in line of order to modify these parameters; all these parameters of starting of Vista are preserved in a register called “Windows Vista Boot Configuration Dated (BCD)”. You will always have the possibility of doing it manually, for that to modify these parameters in this BCD, you must use the tool of the name of “bcdedit.exe” integrated into Vista and which functions in line of orders, not always obvious to realize. This is why the software “VistaBootPro 3.1” will be to you of a great help and with its interface the possibility will give you of carrying out these changes of BCD simply. Installation of VistaBootPRO Currently the version of “VistaBootPRO” is that Ci: “VistaBootPRO 3.1 Beta”. Once you went on the official site, after having downloaded the software and having launched achievable “the V
Use Vista without Activation for 120 Days 2007-08-17 01:59:00 Believe or not by default you can install, use and run Windows Vista
without any license, products key or r the need of activation for 30 days grace period, for purpose of trial or evaluation. You probably thinking this is something illegal but it's not this is official way and it is legal 100%. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Vista can be used and run for 120 days or 4 months and extending the activation grace period is not a violation of the Vista End User License Agreement. You can't use this procedure on all Windows Vista versions; exception was made with Vista Enterprise, which supports only a three-day trial. So those who have this Windows Vista version can't use this tip because it will not work. Now if you want to extend the initial OOB grace period of Windows Vista to another 30 days fallow steps below: 1. Click Start and key in cmd in Start Search box,2. Next step is to press Ctrl+Shift+Enter on your keyboard to open Command Prompt with admin Read more:Activation

Adding fonts to cmd.exe 2007-08-17 01:37:00 Be default, the properties on a cmd.exe window allow you to select either Raster Fonts or Lucida Console. You can add other monospace fonts to the list via the registry. In regedit, navigate to ( Start---> regedit.exe)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion ConsoleTrueTypeFontNotice that Lucida Console is already under this key with a name of "0".Add a new sting value with the name "00" (yep, that's the required name) and set the data to the name of a monospace font already installed in your C:WindowsFonts folder. In this example, I added the Consolas font. It seems that additional entries require names "000", "0000", etc. Names like "1" and "2" don't work. For Pete's sake, why?Open up a new cmd window, right-click on the system menu, select Properties | Font and there is the newly added font.I did this because I wanted a more readable font for my PowerShell window, since I've been spending some time staring at it.
The Vista RAM puzzle: Is 2GB enough? 2007-08-17 01:24:00 A couple weeks ago, my buddy Dwight Silverman asked whether he should be tempted by low, low prices to bump the RAM in his Windows Vista
machine from 2GB to 4GB.He asks:My problem is this: I want the RAM, but do I really need it? I seldom, if ever, use all the memory now in my PC — the RAM gauge I use as part of yahoo widgets seldom goes above 65 or 75 percent. I have no performance complaints. (I also use a 2-GB USB flash drive for Vista’s ReadyBoost, which helps.) Would spending $80 to kick my RAM up a single gigabyte to 3 GB be worth it? Would I be better off spending $160 and going to 4 GB?I’ve got a lot of experience with different PC configurations, and I can say with confidence that 2GB is more than enough for even the most demanding business user. There are two important exception to that rule: If you use one or more virtual machines in the same session, you’ll benefit from as much RAM as you can install, and 2GB probably won’t be enough. You’ll also need (and want)
5 Mistakes Microsoft made with Windows Vista 2007-08-17 01:03:00 Windows Vista
has kind of gotten a bum rap. Some of the rap is deserved -- Microsoft
shipped it too early. But for the most part, the rap is carried on by vocal techies who just like to poop on things because they think criticizing things makes them appear more knowledgeable.Talking to a techie about the quality of mainstream software is a lot like talking to a film school graduate about the quality of mainstream movies. Sure, you might have liked Pirates of the Caribbean but talk to a film snob and it's the 7th sign of the Apocalypse. So how good is Windows Vista
? The answer is, pretty good. Far better than Windows XP. But I can think of 5 big mistakes Microsoft made that has taken a window out of its sails.Let me outline those 5 mistakes Microsoft made with the Windows Vista launch and talk about how Microsoft might be able to keep Windows Vista from being a sequel to Windows ME. #1 The UAC. Clean Up Past Notification Icons in Windows Vista 2007-08-16 23:17:47 A very useful feature in Windows
is the ability to automatically hide system tray icons when they are not in use. The problem is that over time, Explorer caches a list of every single icon that it's ever seen, and your list might grow to hundreds of items that Explorer knows about.
The other issue is that Explorer keeps these items in memory somewhere, so it's also causing bloat, but we can completely reset this list with a little tricky registry editing and recycling Explorer. Note that this will remove any settings you had set for the icons.
To get to the dialog we are talking about, right-click on the Taskbar and choose Properties, then choose the Notification Area tab, and click the Customize button.
Just look at all the items in the list… I don't even have some of those applications installed anymore.
Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search box, and then browse down to this registry key:

Vista - What happened to the Net Send Command 2007-08-16 22:40:00 On occasion I will use the 'net send' command to fire off a quick message to anyone working on our servers. Usually in the form of a script that will notify everyone I am about to reboot. I was surprised to find it didn't work at all when running under Vista
(Well not that surprised)After some digging around I found that Vista now has a new way to do this - the MSG command (I suspect the msg command has been around before that...but this is the first Windows OS where net send has been removed). Here is the syntax:MSG {username | sessionname | sessionid | @filename | *} [/SERVER:servername] [/TIME:seconds] [/V] [/W] [message] username Identifies the specified username. sessionname The name of the session. sessionid The ID of the session. @filename

Reset your Microsoft Office 2003 Serial Number 2007-08-20 22:00:00 From time to time I will come across a machine that has a pirated office serial number. Microsoft
checks your serial number before allowing you to download updates for Windows, and Office. The problem is that there is no way within office to just update your serial number (With a legitimate one) without uninstalling, and reinstalling the software.Since I started getting tired of looking at progress bars I researched to see if there was a way to update it without the reinstall...and it turns out it is actually not too hard. You simply need to drill down to this registry key (As always backup your registry before messing with it):HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice11.0Registration{90110407-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}See the two values: ProductID, and DigitalID? Delete them. Now run launch any office application, and you will be prompted for the new serial number. Now you can update the serial without waiting through a re-install.Check out our Windows Admin Tools Read more:Reset
