The Agnostic and his Catholic family
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I believe in God but not in the church. The statement is plain and unexciting and yet it seems to fire up the most vehement curses known to man, not surprisingly from the most pious, or at least spiritual, of people. With that simple statement, I have been in constant debate and argument with members of my clan and immediate family on how and why I should uphold my beliefs both directly and indirectly. The question is why? I stopped believing in the church shortly after entering High School. Ironically, it was a Catholic school, an institution that upheld the ethics of religion in a much higher perspective than others. Being born a Catholic, I was exposed to everything that the church has to offer; beliefs, prayers, saints. I’ve been baptized, taken my communion, confessed my sins, and taken part in so many rituals that the religion deems a requirement for a place in the heavens that I can’t remember most of them. I lived most of my days in fear of holy retribution and in lin

Portable Applications
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I think its safe to say that when browsing the net away from home, we always want to use the software that we’ve grown used to. Say Firefox for browsing, Thunderbird for emails, Pidgin for IMs, because we’ve had our programs at home tweaked just the way we like. More often that not, what’s available to us offers the default configuration and little of the customization that we’d prefer (as is the case when one visits an internet cafe). Instead of lugging bundles of installers, why not bring along portable versions on your flash disk? This is where Portable Apps enter the scene. They provide convenient and lightweight versions of the popular open source programs. And they provide them totally free. All you need to do is drop them to your flash drive/ipod/portable hard drive, configure and you’re good to go. They’ll work on any windows computer Here’s a list of what PortableApps Suite has in store: Accessibility Firefox Accessibility Exten

Fingerprint of the Gods: Book Review
0000-00-00 00:00:00
“Evidence of Earth’s Lost Civilization” It was a catch-phrase that simply piqued my curiosity, and pulled me from taking a quick look at the shelf with the tag Best Seller hanging above it. I haven’t been intrigued by a book for quite awhile so a catchy line was really a wake-up call. There were no open copies in the bookstores and I didn’t really want to spend money on a book that I wouldn’t really want on my shelf so I headed home and checked out the first few chapters from the net. Right then and there I couldn’t stop reading. Here’s an excerpt from the back flap of the book: Could the story of mankind be far older than we have previously believed? Using tools as varied as archaeo-astronomy, geology, and computer analysis of ancient myths, Graham Hancock suggests a compelling case that it is. In Fingerprints of the Gods, Hancock embarks on a worldwide quest to put together all the pieces of the vast and fascinating jigsaw of mankind

Tips to beat stress
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Stress is a change that we adapt to in our daily lives. You can almost describe it as pressure, demand, or any situation that requires physical and/or mental exertion. It can be positive or negative, ranging from something that motivates you to work or something that drags you to a halt. The negative effects can include lack of productivity, depression, loneliness, frustration or even anger. Those symptoms can sometimes cause much larger problems like break-ups, disparity at work, etc. Here are a few tips to help cope with the effects of stress : 1. Rest and Relaxation: Take some time off and let loose. Work related stress can be due to the pile up of projects and deadlines. A vacation in the middle of the week will help you let loose all that accumulated stress. 2. Watch a movie or play your favorite game Going to the movie house and taking a peek at a random movie can give you a sense of satisfaction that overrules the effects of stress. Games can do the same thing, especially

I can teach you the basics of public speaking and technical writing but in the end, furthering your use and knowledge of it is something that I or anyone else cannot teach. Communication is a skill not a knowledge. It’s a simple deviance from what we know about how to communicate but the meaning is profound. Having sheer basic knowledge simply isn’t enough. Can you imagine being a public speaker and boring your audience to sleep? Here’s a few tips on how to improve yourself: 1. Read everything you can get your hands on. If you hate reading, then you should start to like it. There’s no way you can increase your skill to converse if you don’t know how to convey your ideas into words. Having a generic vocabulary is fine but if you want to excel in communication, you had best not bore your

I was supposed to go to school today but the typhoon changed my plans and classes were canceled so I decided to watch a movie with my girlfriend. It was a choice between Rush Hour 3 and Surf’s up. I love penguins but I guess past successes goaded me to watch the former. Penguins can’t do kung-fun anyway. Characters: You’ll find the staple Rush Hour 3 characters, Jackie-chan as Lee, Chris Tucker as James Carter, Tzi Ma as Ambassador Han and Jingchu Zhang as the grown-up Soo Yang. Chris Tucker is much more rotund now, probably due to his lack of activity in the silver screen and Jackie looks more an

Sadly it’s this system itself that causes the problems that it’s supposed to be preventing.. Here’s why: 1. A call center agent is not a technician This is a common misconception to those who don’t know how the system works. The call center agents face the flood of calls and act as a buffer. Yes it’s economical and beneficial to the company because the job hierarchy prevents one staff member from doing the job of the other. For the customer’s side, it can mean long waits for a response to their support tickets or worse even no response at all. Because they rely on a set of “symptoms” rather than general knowledge of what’s going on, explaining a major problem is almost always a pai

Microsoft’s SideWinder Mouse
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I’ve been using an A4Tech 3XFire mouse for about 2 years or so, give or take a few weeks and I’ve never thought I’d consider replacing it because it’s given me the features any gamer can ask for. Customizable side buttons, a 2xFire button, a button to scroll through your DPI resolutions and a sleek body. I always thought that when it breaks I’d be replacing it with something along it’s product-line. Microsoft proved me wrong. Microsoft debuts the revival of their SideWinder™ line its first gaming mouse built from the ground up. If anyone can remember their controllers before Saitek, arguably MS’s best competition in the field, entered the fray, MS’s SideWinder products, controllers, steering wheels, joysticks were above average, providing basic functionality and a few added quirks. MS changed that age-old perception with the release of a fully customizable gaming mouse. Here’s a quick list of new features: o Quick Turn – a performance-en

Suprnova is back

To those who have been familiar torrents starting for quite a while, the name Suprnova (and that’s not a typo) is no stranger. Many consider it the most popular BitTorrent search engine. However, the site was closed down due to legal pressures. Now it has been relaunched by Pirate Bay. Here’s their post on the front page: We’re back! Suprnova has been down for some years due to some heavy pressure from the copyright lobby. The former owner sloncek donated suprnova to The Pirate Bay - and as you know, we like to kick ass and bow for noone! We were going to keep this site a secret until we had finished it, but of course it leaked, that’s how internet works. So now that the word is out, we’re releasing it! Please consider these first weeks/months as a beta test. Since we love all you guys and gals so much we decided to keep it an open beta test. That means, please behave, don’t complaint to much and if you discover any weird bugs or problems, let us

AMD’s new 6400+ Black Edition
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Good news for AMD fans: The company has officially released their new Atlhon 64 X2 6400+ for the high-end category. The since rumored chip came at a surprise since official AMD roadmaps clearly stated that the 6000+ was the last member of the X2 line before the arrival of Phenom. At 3.2GHz the 6400+ Black Edition is meant to compete with Intel’s E6750 and E6850 series. Although it’s still built on 90nm technology, the chip comes with 2.0GHz HyperTransport link, 2MB L2 cache (1 MB per core) and 125 TDP. AMD intends the chip as a buffer to bolster their current high-end line with the 6400+. The longer they delay though, more competition enters the fray like Tilera’s Tile 64 chip.

Tilera launches 64-core processor
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Here’s some news to wet those tech savvy appetites. A new company, Tilera has introduced the a new processor for the server line called Tile64 a with a 10K tray priced at $435 per chip. Why Tile64? It’s not because it uses 64-bit technology but rather it’s an embedded processor with the unusual feature of having 64 cores. If memory serves me correct, the largest number of cores in the market is the 8-core Mac. What’s nice about this piece of hot technology is that each of it’s core has its own switch and memory, and can thus share data with four neighboring cores. It’s kinda like the feature AMD proposed when they announced their 4×4 architecture a few months back. The memory is divided into two 8KB L1 caches and one 64KB L2, with L3 being simulated as necessary up to 5MB. The RISC based chip of the Tile64 has a clock between 600MHz and 1GHz. Although they still have to release benchmark comparisons, Tilera claims it to be 10 times faster
