MSNBC acquires Newsvine
2007-10-08 01:42:33
I was new to the service (newsvine) so I was a bit surprised to see a post on digg about the issue as well as the new logo. MSNBC has acquired Newsvine, a socially driven news site (like Digg, Shoutwire, etc). Newsvine will continue to operate as an independent news site and will not be folded into MSNBC.com, but Newsvine technology will be added to the MSNBC website. (more…)

IE7 removes WGA check
2007-10-05 19:56:04
The first time IE7, I was a bit confused at Microsoft’s intent. At first, they wanted to compete with Firefox by providing a “free,” safe and optimal browser to compete with Firefox, Opera and everyone else. When it came out, I was surprised to see an additional WGA check which was embbedded into every installation of the new browser, which was quite separate from the checks of my windows installation –this goes the same for WMP11. Now, from the official IE blog is an announcement that the WGA checks will be gone with the latest IE7 update, at least for Windows XP users. (more…)

Software Review: Week 2
2007-10-05 15:58:27
I had a bit of trouble writing a review for this week. I’ve had about six people pestering (yes, it was beyond nagging guys) me to blog about one of the hot issues in the Filipino community today. No it’s not the ZTE deal, it’s about the issue with a scene in Desperate Housewives that’s raising a lot of ruckus. I will remain adamant on my decision to keep this blog away from that issue. Besides, this is a technical blog but you guys already know that didn’t you? If you’re interested on my views on the issue, you can read up my comments on Pinoyblogero. Now that that’s done, on with the review: (more…)

The Storm superworm
2007-10-04 19:12:32
No this isn’t a security bulletin but if you’re thinking that your computer is safe from viruses and malware, think again. What is Storm ? If you’ve been seeing floods of emails and IM messages that try to get you to click links that say, “Interesting Pics,” “Watch this video,” “Funny Pics here,” etc then you’ve seen how the Storm worm spreads. These hoax messages direct victims to a site and prompt them to install an “applet.” This applet is actually Storm Worm itself. (more…)

Firefox 2.0.0.8
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Unlike 2.0.0.7, Firefox ’s new update is highly recommended to fix the crashes that many users have reported. Some of these crashes showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. The security issues that were fixed are as follows: URIs [...] If you want to read more, just click the title

The rise of subnotebooks
0000-00-00 00:00:00
While the idea of ultra low cost subnotebooks was intended as a project for education purposes of third world countries, everyone seems to be chipping in into what’s likely to become a new battlefield for manufacturers. The whole concept started with the OLPC. They wanted a portable, durable notebook with enough features to provide multimedia [...] If you want to read more, just click the title

Open Source Code Editors

I found an interesting list and thought of posting it here. Multi-purpose code editors are probably the best thing that happened to programming. General Programming Tips

Every developer follows a set of guidelines no matter what language he/she is handling. These guidelines can be good or bad depending on how they’re used and on how much they speed development up or slow things down. General guidelines Avoid white spaces in the source code while possible. During initial development, make methods/functions public. Allot proper [...] If you want to read more, just click the title

Gundam 00 - Initial Review

Microsoft Bows to EU

After three years of resistance, Microsoft has finally agreed to start complying with a European Commission 2004 anti-monopoly ruling against it. The commission said the US firm would now “comply with its obligations”. Microsoft, which was fined nearly half a million euros in 2004 and a further 280.5 million euros ($400.6 million) in 2006 for non-compliance, faced [...] If you want to read more, just click the title
