Spyware Terminator - Online Security Authority Top Pick for 2007
2007-08-11 01:43:49
I am so glad I downloaded Spyware Terminator , it has been one of my best decisions for this summer! I was contacted by a Spyware Terminator representative Tereza Kyselakova, to take a look at the possibility of using their product and giving them my opinion.   Being in the Online Security field, I get many requests to do this for companies and products from around the world, and quite frankly most them just want someone to promote them and to get a little free PR! I am very selective on the products I choose to use my own system, to run tests and see if I can recommend their products and services to my clients and online visitors.   I have officially been using Spyware Terminator for two weeks now. I’ll tell you what, I have downloaded many products but this product, Spyware Terminator, which I have been using, is wonderful!!! Everything right from the get go, it is easy to install, no-hidden spyware, adware, or viruses, it fixes problems immediately, ha

Who’s talking to your kids online?
2007-08-08 01:11:15
To borrow from an old public-service announcement: It’s 10 o’clock, do you know where—online —your children are? If the answer is, “Romping around on social-networking sites,” it’s time for you to take some action. Millions of minors post all sorts of personal information on social networking sites like MySpace. Sadly, such sites have become virtual playgrounds for adult sexual predators, too, placing a new responsibility of the shoulders of already-overworked parents: safeguarding their kids who go online. What makes sites like MySpace so risky is that predators can develop long-term relationships with several children simultaneously. “They’ll contact the youth repetitively for up to six months,” Dr. Sharon Cooper, CEO of Developmental and Forensic Pediatrics in Fort Bragg, N.C., told me. The predators usually present themselves as about 20 years old, an appealing age to younger children, according to Dr. Coope

They were caught red-handed abusing customer medical data
2007-07-31 23:57:02
OSA Network friends, CASPIAN members and associates: Our friends at the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse are looking for customers of Albertsons, Sav-On, Jewel-Osco, and Osco pharmacies who received letters or calls asking them to renew their prescription or suggesting they try a new drug. This may have occurred years ago, with the communication often designed as a refill reminder from their friendly family pharmacist. These companies were caught red-handed abusing customer medical data for marketing purposes. They are being sued for improperly using prescription information provided to their pharmacies to mail letters or call customers in order to sell more drugs. If you received such a communication, please contact Beth Givens, founder of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse at: (619) 298-3396 or http://www.privacyrights.org/about_us.htm  I have the highest respect for Beth’s work and her organization. Her letter on this issue appears below.     In freedom,

The Biggest Internet Scam In Recent History
2007-08-20 22:11:57
By Mikey Miller Are you interested in hearing about the biggest internet scam in recent history? NO! Would you be interested if you discovered that it is possibly you that was scammed several months ago and did not even know it? In fact, if you were scammed back then you probably have had money removed from your bank account every month AND you may not even know you are losing your money. Now you are interested! This foundation for this breech of internet security started a couple of years ago as a gift from your caring politicians and bureaucrats in the form of bank funds electronic transfer legislation. Simple stated, if you owe anyone money they (whoever) can ‘electronically’ withdraw it from your account without your permission if they have a contract in place. A few weeks back a neighbor lady came to me venting her disapproval because some unknown and unnamed internet company had cleaned out her banking account. She was going to complain, bring legal su

Report Highlights: Kids Online Almost 60 percent of children three and older are using the Internet. Forty-three percent of teens who use social networking sites reported having been contacted online by complete strangers. Thirty-seven percent of children ages 11 to 17 reported they had received a sexually explicit email or pop-up advertisement within the past year. In homes where children under 18 use the Internet, there was a 28 percent greater incidence of spyware infections in the preceding 6 months. Thanks to Cracker Boy, for this great report. Real ID Card Postponed to 2009 - Should we Celebrate
2007-08-27 18:55:19
Real ID Program Postponed By NICOLE GAOUETTE Los Angeles Times Under siege from states and angry lawmakers, the White House moved back a deadline Thursday to implement national driver’s license standards known as Real ID. The announcement that states have an extra 20 months, until the end of 2009, to meet the requirements of the Real ID Act did little to ease criticism of the law from privacy advocates, motor vehicle departments and lawmakers. Almost two dozen states, including New Hampshire, are weighing legislation to oppose Real ID. The resistance to a policy the administration calls an essential weapon in the war on terror reflects a shift from the almost total support the administration initially enjoyed for its national security agenda after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “In the months after Sept. 11, we adopted a ‘do anything, do everything’ mode,” said Jim Harper, a public policy expert at the libertarian Cato Institute who advises t

Sex abuse by keystroke - battling online child porn
2007-09-22 23:20:02
By Ivonne Marschall, dpa Vienna (dpa) - Pictures flicker across a computer screen. A little girl, no more than five or six. Bound and tortured. Raped. Begging Daddy to stop. Horror fiction? No - an ever more alarming reality. “Eighty per cent of the abuse seen in online child porn is done by people the children know,” said Leila Ben Debba, of ICMEC, the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Chidren. Experts like Ben Debba believe direct family members to be responsible for 45 per cent of the abuse that is later downloaded and viewed by thousands of “customers.” The rest are doctors, teachers, sports coaches or other persons of authority, permeating all social levels. Child pornography and child abuse may be as old as Mankind, but the internet has opened new channels and forums for distribution, experts gathered at a Vienna conference agree. At the initiative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, law enforceme

Plan to Use RFID in U.S. Border Control Draws Fire
2007-09-21 01:57:12
Industry groups are skeptical about the U.S. government plan to add long-range RFID technology to driver’s licenses to improve border security. by Ellen Messmer, Network World A U.S. government plan to use long-range RFID technology as part of a border-crossing security initiative is coming under intensified fire by an industry group. Beginning Jan. 31, 2008, a valid driver’s licenses won’t be enough for travelers to pass between the United States and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda, under new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rules. A standard government passport will be required, or a birth certificate with driver’s license. But as an alternative, DHS is moving forward with a pilot program that has states adding long-range RFID technology to driver’s licenses. The idea is to have U.S. border guards with RFID readers quickly read a traveler’s RFID-enhanced driver’s license remotely and make a face check an

MySpace calls itself “a place for friends”
2007-09-18 21:56:25
The intense media scrutiny and hysteria around MySpace and teens, as well as the real cyberdrama that has erupted when teens do bad stuff on MySpace, makes Facebook a very attractive alternative. MySpace and Teens: What Can Parents Do. Myspace MySpace could change policy to 18+ signup and it will solve a lot of problems myspace has.  MySpace calls itself “a place for friends”, and that is exactly what it is. Teens Teens are resilient creatures; they (we) somehow make it through adolescence, and most of us become functioning, productive adults.  Teens who are all about entertainment, especially music and video will continue to remain loyal to MySpace.  Teens who move to Facebook may keep their MySpace profiles, they just might be less active.  ” The challenge is raising teens who treat it as such.  Most teens today own either a cell phone or an ipod, and in some cases both.  The key method for the communication of teens today is online social network

The Walt Disney Company’s $350 million purchase of Club Penguin signals a new focus of attention for marketers and media companies targeting kids and teens online. Virtual worlds are becoming more frequent destinations as the percentage of children and teens who use the Internet increases. “For marketers trying reach kids and teens on social networking sites, there is a new game in town: virtual worlds,” said Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, Kids and Teens : Virtual Worlds Open New Universe. “Of course, virtual worlds are not new, but the level of development activity, venture capital investment and consumer interest in virtual worlds is unprecedented,” she said. Survey: consumers don’t understand online security
2007-10-02 22:13:43
By Alex Zaharov-Reutt, Tuesday, 02 October 2007 A new survey by the NCSA and McAfee shows just how vulnerable most computer owners are, as the majority who believe themselves protected by security software actually discover they are instead woefully underprotected! The NCSA, or National Cyber Security Allance at StaySafeOnline.Org, and global IT security player McAfee have joined forces to release a startling report (PDF) on the state of security on US consumers ’ computers. Called the McAfee/NCSA Online Safety Study, the report opens with “Think Your Home Computer Is Safe? Think Again”. The report shows that people believe the security of their computer and Internet connection is important, but that people aren’t doing anywhere near enough to ensure that they continue to stay protected, by ensuring automatic updates occur for the OS, installed software and the relevant security programs, that updates are paid for each year to be running the very latest v

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – When it came to media from a kids-and-family perspective this year, there was good, there was bad, and there was truly ugly. Common Sense Media, the nation’s leading nonpartisan organization dedicated to giving parents the tools and information they need to make sure that they – and not the media – remain the primary influence on their kids’ lives, today released its list of the 2007 Common Sense Media Award winners and losers. “Our winners get an ‘ONnie’ award for bringing us great, family-friendly entertainment, and providing leadership on kids and media issues,” said Common Sense Media CEO James Steyer. “Our losers get an ‘OFFul’ award for contributing to a 24/7 media landscape filled with anti-role models and mixed messages, ultimately making it harder for parents to raise their kids the way they want.” The complete list of award winners and losers is as follows: Common Sen

Computers weren’t designed for security, they were designed to perform complex work. Simplify Your Life with Managed PC Care and Secure Your Lifestyle! Computers have become a major security risk. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses, spyware, and other hacker tools floating around the Internet waiting to contaminate computers. Approximately 80% to 90% of all problems people have with their computers are a direct result of security breaches. These growing problems are a huge trend that everyone can easily see and understand. PC problems are driving demand for expert computer services. Protect Yourself From Badware
2007-10-09 01:45:23
Stopbadware.org has just released its “Trends in Badware 2007″ report, a free overview of all the ways you and your computer can be slipped digital roofies while you’re online looking at LOLpornography and doing your banking through Twitter. It’s written in a deliberately non-technical style, so if you’re put-off or intimidated by the Slashdot crowd, this is a great way to educate yourself or a naive loved one about the dangers of drive-by downloads, website hacking, and so on.The report isn’t the prettiest or most exciting thing to read, and the section on how to spot a fake MySpace profile is hilarious. (Wait, you mean I’m not friends with all these sexy ladies?) But it’s worth a read just to bring yourself up-to-speed on the current state of the art in badware. Their closing advice is fairly obvious: install anti-virus software, keep your operating system up to date, and stay educated. We also suggest Ad-Aware 2

Americans Have False Sense of PC Security
2007-10-04 17:42:33
The Hottest Topic in Security Today! Americans Have False Sense of PC Security, I have read a lot of articles over the last few days and I am even more convinced than ever, the home PC users need to have a security solution they know they can trust and have confidence that they are being protected… And when they have a security breech that it can be fixed immediately. This is why the Online Security Network has been working hard over the last few months to bring all these solutions wrapped up in one complete package for a very reasonable cost. We have found it, and we are in the final stages of negotiations to bring this to all the OSA Elite members at a very special price… PC Wakeup Calls Needed Here are some of the survey highlights: Ninety-two percent of Americans think that their anti-virus software is up to date, however only 51 percent actually have currently updated their anti-virus software within the past week. Enough Is Enoughb - Statement on Increased Funding for ICAC
2007-10-19 16:04:56
Enough Is Enough (EIE) commends the Department of Justice for awarding 13 new state and local law enforcement agencies more than $3 million to form Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task forces in their regions. In the early nineties, EIE saw sex-saturated newsgroups, chat rooms, and child-pornography bulletin groups as an overture for an anywhere, everywhere, all-the-time, Internet pornography explosion. Unfortunately, as the Internet has grown, child pornographers and sexual predators have new avenues to exploit our children, and these criminals have found virtual validation through ala cart child porn, pedophile newsgroups, and easy and anonymous access to our children. “ICAC task forces play a key role in the investigation and prosecution of these crimes against children, but child pornography is big business; in 2006 alone, the child porn business brought in an estimated $3 billion,” commented EIE President and Chairman, Donna Rice Hughes.

MySpace: How Do I Block It?
2007-11-20 22:27:18
Many parents fear websites like MySpace while their kids think the cyber neighborhood is way cooler than the brick and mortar homes next door.    A parent’s first instincts may be to block websites like MySpace; simply make sure their children never go near it.  Out of sight, out of mind, or so the theory goes.  Technology allows parents several options to block or restrict Internet access.  There are pros and cons of each method which will be discussed in detail below.     Your first decision is to decide how much control you want to exert over your child’s online experience.  If you wish, you can watch every single keystroke.  If they type the words “meet me” you will see each and every keyboard move that got them to that ominous message.   On the other extreme, you can allow full access with no monitoring whatsoever.   Any place on the information super highway is within easy reach 24/7.  Both of those extremes seem a little…well, E

by Jabulani Leffall Data breaches, ongoing integrity concerns about the Windows Vista operating system and spam, which reached record levels this year, topped Symantec’s Top 10 Internet security trends of 2007 list. In light of this list from the Cupertino, Calif-based IT security giant and maker of the near-ubiquitous Norton Anti-Virus program, a particular concern for IT pros in the Windows enterprise space is whether Vista, which has been patched 16 times as of Nov. 13, 2007, is worth the effort of implementing right now. Here were the ten major security trends of the year as Symantec and others have seen them: Data Breaches. To avoid having anyone getting hold of them, it may be ideal to protect them with password. However, you have to make sure that these are very hard to decipher. You already told him your age and he is aware that you are young enough to be his child or even grandchild.  And yet, he insists on
