The iPhone Hacking Kit, step by step
2007-08-14 12:28:00
For better or worse, Apple designed the iPhone to be a completely closed system. That is, you can’t add new applications to it, and even some seemingly “normal” cell phone features - like the ability to add custom ring tones - are locked up. Or are they? Thanks to an extremely well-organized group of very talented hackers, you can crack into your iPhone and make all sorts of changes and modifications. The iPhone hacking effort has been a Herculean task, but the progress that’s been made in a reasonably short amount of time is very impressive. In the month since the iPhone shipped, hackers have released code that allows you to perform all sorts of modifications, from installing custom ringtones, to adding new applications such as a screen capture program, and a Nintendo emulator. Hacking the iPhone is not a complicated process, but it does take time, usually 30 to 45 minutes, and some special software and bits of code, which we’ve gathered up for you. Best of all, once your

Denver man hacks thumbs for more efficient iPhone use - literally [Updated]
2007-08-14 12:26:00
Keyboards on handheld devices and smartphones have often been debated in terms of how much work they actually let you get done. Tiny displays, limited functionality, itty-bitty keyboard buttons and now the iPhone 's entirely virtual keyboard whose keys can be hard to hit for some people have given folks something to talk about. Taking matters to a level that I believe is unheard of in the technology world, however, 28-year-old Thomas Martel in Bonnie Brae (a Denver , CO neighborhood) decided to solve his large handed problem by surgically altering his thumbs to make it easier to use his iPhone.Through a procedure called "whittling" which the North Denver News described, an incision was made into each of Martel's thumbs. The bone was shaved down, muscles were realigned and his thumbnail was modified to help bring it all together. His new 'streamlined' thumbs may look out of place in relation to his other fingers, but Martel says all the time and frustration he'll save should make the

Skype Comes to the iPhone via Shape Services
2007-08-14 12:24:00
There have been previously released methods available for using Skype on the iPhone , but none have been particularly convenient. From the looks of things, that's changing. Shape Services , the makers of IM+ for Skype, have released a beta version of an iPhone version of their software. IM+ for Skype is a mobile application that enables voice and text communication with other Skype users and provides cost-effective calling to landlines and mobiles. Unlike previously released

Apple Reponsive to Unresponsive iPhone Screens
2007-08-10 20:51:00
If you've read about the recent instances of iPhone touch screens becoming unresponsive, or worse yet, have had your iPhone touch screen exhibit such issues, fear not. Apple has indicated it is aware of the "dead spot" issue that some iPhones are suffering from, and are actively resolving the problem. For those unfamiliar with the issue, numerous reports have arisen over the last week or so in which the capacitive touch screen on the Apple iPhone begins to exhibit a dead or unresponsive area of approximately one half inch in height across the width of

Doom on the iPhone... almost
2007-08-10 20:48:00
Afterthe NES emulator, you knew it was just a matter of time, and now Doom is running (though not playable yet) on the iPhone .stepwhite is behind this one, too, and he worked it up because he'd promised a friend he would (not to mention that he was prominent requests for it on Waxy.org, and some other little Apple site you might know). Unfortunately, he hasn't implemented a controller system yet (all you can do right now is watch the demo scenes), but that's the beauty of open source-- no doubt some intrepid programmer out there has an idea on how to do it. Also, you gotta turn that thing sideways, man! This isn't the iPod; let's use the whole screen space.Geez, after Doom, what's left? Quake III Arena? I stand in awe of what you programmers have been able to do with the iPhone.

iPhone kinda supports playing any audio through a bluetooth headset
2007-08-10 09:25:00
As I understand it, there are a lot of new DAPs and music-enabled mobile phones that support A2DP - a technology that allows devices to transmit stereo audio to Bluetooth headphones. It's all the rage with the kids these days, and many fans of cutting cables wherever possible were a bit disappointed when the A2DP acronym didn't make the iPhone 's feature list. Thanks to a tip from TUAW reader Earle Davies though, the iPhone apparently does seem to support sending any audio - including music and the audio tracks from your videos - to a Bluetooth headset that isn't even enabled with A2DP - but it aint pretty. To tinker with this, you of course need to have a Bluetooth headset paired with your iPhone. I personally have an older HS-850, one of the first Motorola models with a microphone that flipped open to toggle the headset on and off. After you've switched your headset on and it's shaken hands with your iPhone, go into the Visual Voicemail screen and tap the Audio button in the uppe

Apple posts two new iPhone ads
2007-08-10 09:24:00
Thanks to TUAW readers participating in tonight's TUAW TalkShoe chatcast, we found out about two new iPhone ads Apple has posted to their site. Both ads bring a new perspective to the iPod's appeal, focusing on how much it allows you to carry - or stop carrying - in your pocket. The first, titled Instead, informs viewers that they can simply carry an iPod in their phone, instead of an iPod and their phone. The second ad, titled Amazing, expands on the idea of how much you can carry: your favorite music, all your email, today's newspaper and - of course - a phone. The ads are both well done and, I think, speak a bit more clearly to the potential of owning an iPhone. Having all that stuff in one sexy little device that effortlessly syncs with one app is indeed a wonderful thing, and I bet these new ads might strike a stronger chord with consumers still on the fence about buying one to replace their other gadgets.

The 99 cent iPhone (and the $99 Nano)
2007-08-10 09:23:00
Wanna buy an iPhone for 99 cents? You probably missed your chance. Apparently 99 Cent Only stores in California are having a big 25th anniversary party, and this morning, at their store in Westchester, CA, they sold 9 iPhones to the first 9 customers for only 99 cents each. That can't quite be legal, considering that Apple and AT&T have paid a lot of money to make sure you get the iPhone from them, but of course it's just a fun contest to promote the store's anniversary. Unfortunately, if you missed your chance this morning, the prizes go downhill fast-- a Friends VHS set and cordless powered scissors are among the options for Friday. Wait a minute, "cordless powered scissors"? That sounds pretty cool, actually.Of course, the 99 cent store isn't the only place you can find good deals-- Adam dropped us a heads up that Nanos are being sold in Apple's refurbished store for only 99... ok, well, dollars. But a 2gb Nano for 99 bucks is as cheap as you'll find it.

Trick your iPhone voicemail into using voice recording data
2007-08-09 12:18:00
The other day, I discussed how to record audio on your iPhone . Several people wrote in asking whether they could have their recordings show up in voicemail, so I scouted around a bit. I discovered that voicemail is stored in ~/Library/Voicemail and that it uses an sqlite3-compatible database to manage that information. Last night, I put together a shell script that allows you to trick the iPhone into thinking that amr files added to the voicemail folder are actual voicemails. To make this happen, I ported sqlite3 to the iPhone (You can download a copy here). I also wrote a csh script, which you can download here and a time utility, here. The reason I wrote the script in csh rather than bash (both of which appear in the standard binary distribution kit) is just that I'm more familiar with csh. To run the script, supply it with the amr file as its one argument, e.g. copy2vmail foo.amr. The script copies the amr file to the voicemail folder and updates the voicemail database as if the vo

Media Temple boasts iPhone friendly control panel
2007-08-09 12:16:00
Media Temple , a well known hosting provider, has recently rolled out a beta version of their control panel made just for the iPhone . Judging from the number of folks who sent this to us (thanks to all of you!) there seems to be a large, and until now, untapped market of people who want to be able to register a domain from anywhere.Aside from registering domains you can also restart services, pay your bill, add email addresses, and submit a tech support ticket. I'm not a Media Temple customer myself, nor do I own an iPhone (and we all know how I feel about iPhone specific web apps) but I must admit this looks slick. You can access the iPhone version of Media Temple's control panel here.

Found Footage: copy and paste on the iPhone mockup
2007-08-09 12:15:00
lonelysandwich put together this short demo of how copy-and-paste might work on the iPhone (and it's the first parody I've seen since the music was released last week). The whole thing with the guy and the lips is just freaky in the beginning (and pretty funny at the end), but in between there's a short demo of how text could be selected and pasted using the multitouch surface on the iPhone. Is it just me, or is implementing an interface like this turning out to be harder than it looks? As easy as this mockup is, I really doubt Apple would go for something this complicated (there are multiple screens to go through, and it's somewhat intuitive, but just not intuitive enough for Apple, methinks). Maybe the reason Apple hasn't put C&P on the iPhone yet is that, as good as they are at what they do, they just can't come up with a good way to do it.Thanks, ratiosans!

Although we theorized yesterday that the .Mac web gallery integration feature demonstrated at yesterday's Apple media event would come to the iPhone in it's next update - it appears we were wrong. Apparently, this feature has come to many iPhones without any update at all.

Apple Delivers Online Photo Sharing Between .Mac and iPhone
2007-08-08 00:43:00
Apple held a media event today, August 7th, where they announced the new iMac. A sleeker, more feature packed, sexier version of the previous iMac. Along with the announcement of the new iMac came a slew of information on updates to Apple software offerings such as iLife, iWork, and the .Mac online service. The most noteable of the group for iPhone owners were the online additions. .Mac is Apple's online subscription service featuring email, web hosting, online storage, and other features. Now, added to the mix is the .Mac Web Gallery featuring online photo and video sharing. After the next iPhone firmware update (we're assuming this will be in the next update), you'll be able to share photos from your iPhone on the web by sending them directly from your iPhone to your .Mac web gallery. Steve Jobs demonstrated the functionality at the Apple media event today. The process is as simple as a click of the "send to web gallery button" that should soon be added to your iPhone. Another n

First Nintendo Emulator Available for the Apple iPhone
2007-08-08 00:43:00
The last week or so has seen the arrival of the first significant third party applications for the Apple iPhone . We're not talking about AJAX web applications, we're talking true third party software running on the iPhone. The latest of these is the first NES emulator for the iPhone. A programmer named stepwhite has delivered a native NES emulator for the iPhone based on the InfoNES core. Amongst the titles seemingly working via the emulator are: Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, Mega Man 2, Ikari Warriors, Metroid, Punch Out and more. As the programmer disclaims, the emulator is quite clearly in it's early stages. Amongst the known problems are speed and sound. As stepwhite states, Presently there is no sound, and the emulator is a little slow (most likely due to the way I'm drawing onto the screen). And the control is a bit iffy (using an image of an actual controller, while cute, sucks). The ROM can be installed fairly easily using one of several drag and drop file browsers now a

Apple iPhone Unlocked for Use in Europe
2007-08-07 06:39:00
Not long after we updated you about a major milestone on the road to an unlocked iPhone , one which brought an unlocked iPhone ever closer, hackers have unlocked the iPhone for use in Europe . Though this does not appear to be a "true" or "full" unlock, as the method requires the creation of a new SIM card using a SIM card reader/writer, it is also more significant than previous SIM card hacks. This latest achievement has resulted in fully working (with the exception of YouTube and Visual Voicemail in some cases) iPhones operating on European carriers. So far, users have reported iPhones working in Croatia and UK (Orange). A tutorial featuring step-by-step instructions on how to complete the European unlock was posted by a user named Saascha on the hackint0sh forums. To complete the required steps, you'll need your iPhone, a SIM card reader/writer, an original European v1 SIM card, and a SilverCard SIM card - roughly $100 worth of ingredients (excluding the iPhone, of course). Here is

iPhone Displays Running Windows XP? Say it ain't so.
2007-08-05 21:23:00
Apple executives are probably waking up this morning feeling a bit 'foot in mouth'. During the wee hours of the morning here in the US, a picture surfaced on Gizmodo UK of an AT&T store iPhone display that had to be rebooted. Well, of course we all could have guessed that the displays were running off PCs which might occasionally need a restart. What most wouldn't have guessed is that the PCs behind the iPhone displays were running Microsoft Windows XP. The display pictured is the model found across the United States at all AT&T corporate retail stores. The iPhone display at Apple stores is completely different animal, and one can only presume does not run on Windows as well. Of course, one could surmise any number of reasons that the iPhone display in AT&T stores might be running Windows. On one hand, putting a Mac behind every in store display would be considerably more costly for Apple/AT&T as compared to the lost cost of a relatively bare bones PC with Windows XP on it. Ad

As a few days have passed since the first iPhone software update became available, users have begun reporting additional features, fixes, and enhancements resulting from new firmware. Although Apple 's official indication regarding the update noted only security and bug fixes to the iPhone's Safari browser and it's underlying webkit, initial reports showed evidence of more expansive improvements. Users have been reporting a generally improved iPhone experience. Things seem snappier, annoying bugs have been removed, and a few lacking features already added. Google Phone a Reality Again? New Prototype Surfaces
2007-08-05 21:21:00
Things had been quiet for a while on the Google Phone rumors front, but it looks like talk about the device has surfaced again. Only, this time, the concept is looking much less like a rumor and more like an inevitability. Reports have been surfacing which indicate that Google has been showing off a prototype mobile phone to different carriers. According to an article published Thursday in the Wall Street Journal, Google is showing the the prototype around while continuing to hone and improve the product to offer a browsing and internet experience superior to what is currently available. Additionally, the Google phone will reportedly offer free service. Instead of relying on a large price tag and/or monthly fees, the Google phone will supposedly generate revenue for Google via commercial advertising dollars. Specifically, in exchange for free calling, Google phone users will be served advertisements. Google is particularly excited about the possibilities of mobile phone advertising.

Hackers Hit Major Milestone in Unlocking the iPhone
2007-08-05 21:19:00
The team behind the iPhone Dev Wiki, which has become the foremost camp of hackers attempting to unlock the Apple iPhone, has hit another major milestone in their efforts. The team released news recently that they have successfully extracted the full content of the NOR memory (from the S-Gold2). Although the Wiki team hasn't released the source code or the dump of the NOR memory at this point, they have released a binary which will allow others to dump the content of their iPhone's NOR memory as well. Don't know what that means? Join the masses. The important thing is that, according to the dev wiki team, this is the "main key to achieving a true unlock". Considering that the team has already achieved 5 of the 6 self-set goals towards a fully unlocked iPhone, and have achieved a major milestone on the way to the 6th, it means they are almost there. According to the team, "Just a couple of days ago we managed to extract the full content of the NOR memory (from the S-Gold2), which
