Moonfestival approaching, mooncakes in the stores
2007-09-26 03:47:46
Moonfestival is approaching, mooncakes are available in the stores in Malaysia. It’s in some ways funny that during the period of fasting for the Muslim population, the Ramadan, some of the best food is available. Mooncakes are a good example. It’s a typical Chinese product and you will find few Muslims eating this excellent pastry. Last week I was in Penang, and with some friends I visited one of the many local markets. I found lots and lots of different kinds of mooncakes. You will find no Chinese household at the moment, with the Moonfestival approaching, where there are no mooncakes available. Visit a Chinese family and you most likely will be offered some mooncake with Chinese tea. Here’s more about Mooncakes and the Moonfestival that will be held in early October. UPDATE The Hi Q Organic Farm in Teluk Dalam Pangkor
2007-09-23 10:27:52
On June 12 I wrote in this blog that the Prime Minister of Malaysia paid a visit to Pulau Pangkor. Additional to the original post, here it is, I can add a few things. Recently I was in the opportunity to go around Pangkor by boat. The building of the Hi-Q farm is in full swing. However, you can’t see anything of it from the island itself. This has obviously to do with the location, Teluk Dalam in an area which is mostly Forest Reserve and not assessable for anyone. But I could take some photos. See the follow page for a not so nice picture of a hole in the hills: Hi ! Organic Farm

Golf in Sabah and Sarawak
2007-10-09 08:41:38
Sabah and Sarawak are not the most well known for their golf sites. Jungle trekking, Mount Kinabalu, Orang Utans, diving are all more known. But both states have some excellent golf courses. Worth to check them out if golfing is what you want. Golf in Sabah and Sarawak

Nine Emperor Gods, the festival so far
2007-10-17 01:30:01
Living in Malaysia brings many blessings, one of them is meeting people from a very different background as my own. With meeting Chandra and Pearly I had the opportunity to not only visit a few days of a Taoist religiuous festival, but I was also able to get insight information about what the festival represents. And you can trust me in this, this festival for the Nine Emperor God is quite an event. The Nine Emperor Gods Temple in Butterworth It all started with bringing the gods from the sea to the temple in Butterworth. The first 2 days I skipped but at the third day I witnessed quite an extraordinary event: medium putting there hands and head (!) in boiling oil. They put it in their mouth and spit it then in the fire. Although I was a few meters away from the mediums and the fire, I could feel the heat of the oil (which was clearly boiling). After the session the oil got further treatments with herbs and then sold to devotees. If this was exciting and scary, the next day would be ev

Taiping’s charcoal history and factory
2007-10-31 23:19:00
Last week I was finally in the opportunity to visit one of the many charcoal factories in Matang, Kuala Sepetang. These villages are living of the mangrove forest. Many people are either fishermen or live and work in the charcoal factory. I have one thing first to admit, I didn’t expect the charcoal factory all too exciting when I entered. How wrong I was! Mr. Chuah, the owner of this factory gave us an extraordinary explanation of the history and processing of charcoal. Even if you have zero interest, Mr. Chuah makes you interested, he’s a gifted storyteller. The charcoal factory of his family goes back all the way to the 1930’s. Mr. Chuah is the second generation and he will most likely be succeeded by his younger brother (he has 5 brothers) You can have a detailed look at this page about the charcoal factory

Timeshare, a clever way of having holidays
2007-10-31 22:52:45
Timesharing, what is it? Is it worth to join timesharing projects? Recently I was contacted by Timeshares, and I found it intriguing. Why would you do it? The answers slowly came to surface and the more I read about it, the more I realized that once you join, holiday becomes cheap, some of the heavy costs become almost zero, costs like hotels for example. And the bills at home are paid! Sounds too good to be true? I thought so too until I started reading and checking, and re-checking. Give it a good reading and enjoy. Ecology camp in Taiping, Kuala Sepetang and Gua Temperung
2007-10-30 20:15:16
A few weeks back Mr. Goh called me. He asked me if I was interested in joining him and his team for a few days out to Taiping, Kuala Sepetang and Gua Temperung caves. He had organised an ecology camp (in fact it’s more like a few days to study the ecology in this area) a group of 160 students and teachers from the Green Garden International School. Not surprisingly then students were enthusiastic about the idea to go into the Gua Temperung cave or in mangrove swamps and the charcoal factory. It was very well organised, despite that the group had to stay in two different hotels. This was in no way a problem in organising activities. Food was excellent, we had a couple of meals in the Soon Lee Restaurant in Taiping, which turned out to be an excellent example of Chinese Malaysian food. The mangrove forest hold quite a few secrets for the students and Mr. Chuah, owner of one of the charcoal factories was keeping the eyes of the students focused on the charcoal business which turned

Nine Emperor Gods temple
2007-10-28 23:18:07
The festival is finished now. Until next year the sacred Urn will be with the new Lor Chu. The “old” Lor Chu will still be around in the Tow Boo Kong temple. I spoke to here yesterday, while Mrs. Pearly and I came in the afternoon for a quick visit to shoot a few more photos (”a few” turned out to be over 100). The festival is over, it’s time to look back. It was such an event. I have to admit, I had no idea about Taoism, and although I have learned something, I am almost as ignorant as before. But I do know something now: the Tow Boo Kong and two other Nine Emperor Gods temples I visited are all blessed with something very special. There is definitely something magic in there. I had no choice then to write about the temples and the Nine Emperor Gods festival. The last years Lor Chu, Mrs. Girlie was a great help in understanding what happens during the festival. Without her and Mrs. Pearly I would not have been able to understand anything. And someone a

Penang temples, Cheng Kon Sze
2007-10-28 23:02:14
During the Nine Emperor Festival I was the guest of Mrs. Pearly and Mr. Chandra. They invited me to join them to the , another Nine Emperor Gods temple. I expected something of a similar temple. Nothing could have prepared me for what I would see. The temple itself is much older then the Tow Boo Kong Temple in Butterworth. Many devotees were around during the festival and it was an excellent experience. The Oil Lamp, 130 years old in Cheng Kon Sze The temple, though small was in many ways more beautiful then the one in Butterworth. While Tow Boo Kong for sure is more beautiful, and extensive in its architecture, the Cheng Kon Sze is older, one can almost feel the wisdom coming out of the temple. If you have little time, visit this temple instead of any other. Cheng Kon Sze is magnificent. Read more about the Cheng Kon Sze temple in Penang

Mayan riviera Mexico
2007-11-05 01:35:16
I browse sometimes over the net and find amazing websites. This one is one of those that immediately attracted my attention. The first reason was the diving page. I love diving and it’s always amazing to go down and find a world which is so different from ours. We humans are so clumsy under water. Looking at all those fish that come and go, no worries about pressure or limited air time. We humans can only glaze in astonishment. And that is what I do when I am down. Now I was browsing over this website and saw the photos here. It was a “wow” moment. That is the place I want to be. So I am going to set some money aside and in the future I will come to Playa and enjoy the diving there. Trust me, I will come. Diving in the Mayan Riviera

Penang, Butterworth and the Taoist temples
2007-11-05 00:55:09
I just returned from Thailand, to be accurate, from the small border town of Betong, about 100km east of Penang . I had been cycling at ease, because it was mostly going down, to my friends house near Kuala Batas. It was one of those days everything went so easy. At my friends house I was invited to join them in the evening to the Tow Boo Kong temple, nearby in Butterworth. I wrote an extensive page about this temple for my Pangkor website which you read here For the bicyclist I wrote another story with some more global material. Here is what happened those days in Butterworth and in Penang, because yes, I also went to one of the Nine Emperor Gods temple in Penang. Here’s the link

Make your travel experience pay your bills
2007-11-10 22:25:14
Sorry, I am not going to tell you how you can make a zillion dollars in 1 month with 20 minutes work a day. If that is what you expect, please google for such scams. However, I can offer you some info about how to make money with your travel experience . I do that and it works well. It pays my bills and I have a comfortable life in Malaysia. Here I do what I love to do: cycling, diving, eating out (never eat at home… how would that feel…?), meeting friend when I want, not when the boss allows me. So, how do I do it? In fact it is quite simple: I wrote 3 websites: www.pulau-pangkor.com www.bicycle-adventures.com www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com These websites are about my travel experiences and they do generate substantial money. Now, what I can do, you can do. So make your travel experience make your money, you have the knowledge about it because you have done it yourself. So all you need to do is find the right entrance gate and off you go. This page shows you how to create

Swickies rock your socks off….
2007-11-10 08:03:21
Swickies rock your socks off? What is a Swicki? A Swicki is a kind of mix between a search engine and Wikipedia. It has the features of a Search Engine but YOU are the one who controls the one who controls the content. In other words, you are the God of your Swicki. How does it work? In principle very simple, you create a search box and a results page. Take for example my Yangshuo swicki, and do some searches. When you do searches related to Yangshuo, Guilin or China you will find the Yangshuo websites better in the list then in ordinary Search Engines like Google, Yahoo or Windows Live. Cheat? Scam? Yes and no, basically as a Swicki owner I have the possibility to give people the best results for a specific subject and sometimes in a traditional Search Engine, I see a bit of junk passing by. I can filter that out in my Swicki. For webmasters it is also interesting because the principle of a blogroll works in Swicki too. Add websites in the Sidebar and the search results will be genera

Malay wedding, some response from visitors…

Malaysia Books and Multimedia
2007-11-10 07:56:02
Travelers to Malaysia can of course read the Pangkor website to prepare themselves. But what if the website is not enough? Or, what I personally have, I want to sit on the sofa with a book in my hands. Reads easier then on a monitor. You see, I live in Malaysia and in the town where I live, Sitiawan, there are no bookstores. If I want to buy a book, I have to travel a few hours, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, to find a decent bookstore. Thank God we have the internet these days! And this I have made it even easier for you. On the Pangkor website is now a complete book and multimedia store available with everything you can possibly want to read or view. Look for yourself and enjoy the Malaysia book and multimedia store

Stamps in Malaysia
2007-11-15 04:37:02
Stamps, I did collect them when I was younger. I remember I had a bunch of books with all kinds of stamps. One thing that always amazed me were the stamps of tropical countries, Brazil, African countries, Thailand, yes I even had a few Malaysia n stamps too. They were always very colorful, populated with exotic birds and mamals. In Holland we had “boring stamps”. Was that the reason I forgot the stamps? I am not sure. In some way I guess it’s part of the process of growing up and find other more interesting things to do. I went into judo, started collecting music, read hundreds of books, went on the road …  and… forgot the stamps. It came all back this morning when I went to the post office here in Sitiawan Malaysia. I had to mail something to Holland. The lady gave me a few white stamps with colorful birds. Wow…. we didn’t have that in Holland. OFCOURSE we didn’t have them. we didn’t have the birds too! But it made me realise

7 Lies, why not 8???
2007-11-12 11:17:10
Some things in my life have left am enormous impression. I bet you have that too. My first schoolday at secondary school, my first kiss, my second place in the Open Dutch Judo Championships and first rock & roll concert I saw. During my life I became fascinated by what other people said, what I read. I became more focussed on what others have to tell me, what I could learn. When I read ebooks from Ken Evoy I know I was dealing with an exceptional man. My first Ken Evoy book was the Affiliate Masterscourse, a true masterpiece. What really knocked me out was that this man had written a book so easy to understand, so extensive and so full of humour, that even I understood it. But what really knocked me out was that the book was free! It was a FREE download. The book is still free: The Free Affilaite Masters Course In the internet world there are mostly scams running around. People claiming they make money but in fact… you know what I mean. But when Ken Evoy speaks through his n

Sambal Belachan breakfast
2007-11-28 23:29:33
One of the most curious breakfast I got a few weeks ago. I went to see my friend Mrs. Pearly in Kepala Batas. She’s a good cook, write about that one here Penang website. I was her and her husbands’ guest to help her with a few website problems. She told me she was making some sambal belachan. And when I woke up I would get for breakfast some homeade brown bread with this sambal belachan. Pearly and her husband Chandra are bread eaters. In Malaysia you will not find many people who love homemade brown bread. The Malaysians, if they eat bread, they prefer sweet white breads or bread with fillings. Brown bread is not on the menu. So the morning I wokeup with the idea to have some great brown bread for breakfast. Now you have to know I never eat bread here in Malaysia. Good bread is hard to find and if I have the choice between bad bread or a good bowl of noodles or a plate of rice that taste great I know what to choose. Chandra now told me to put some sambal belachan on the

NEW Vikri Beach Resort

The Vikri BEach Resort at Pulau Pangkor’s Pasir Bogak is one of the more private chalet hotels at Pangkor. The family owned hotels offers a nice range of chalets, away from the cloud, near the jungle of the Pangkor hills while the same chalets face also the Pasir Bogak beach. This hotel chalets is owned by a lovely family who give you the feel you are not only guests, but almost part of the family. Highly recommended. Horizon Inn, Sea view hotel at Nipah Bay Pangkor
2007-12-18 21:26:41
The Horizon Inn at Teluk Nipah, Nipah Bay in Pangkor has made quite a few improvements. We are proud to give you now the opportunity to book a room at gthe Horizon Inn. The rooms are all nice and comfortable with what you can expect from a decent hotel. If you decide to stay at Pangkor on 30th December, you may want to visit the opening of the “gourmet health coffee shop”. The shop will add a very valuable aspect to Nipah Bay and from what Miss Sing told us, it will be a very interesting concept. The shop will sell pre-packed local coffees with Malaysian herbs such as Tongkat Ali. You will also find famous Ipoh White coffee, slimming tea and health drinks with ganoderma (giant mushrooms). Personally I am looking forward to see the shop open and get some of the famous Ipoh White Coffee! Read more about the Horizon Inn at Teluk Nipah

Building a website is NOT for everyone
2007-12-15 18:30:41
Huh? Do I read that right? Why is building a website not for everyone ? Have you been looking to build a successful website, trying to generate an income but got disappointed by the Quick Rich Schemes? Me too. But my Pulau Pangkor website is a good example of a website that now is the dominating website about Pangkor and surrounding areas in Malaysia. The website generates an income for me that gives me a life. You doubt the website is that dominating? Check a few keywords, I give you a few. Try: Pangkor Lumut Malaysia islands Sitiawan As you see, these keywords generate a top 10 position for different pages of the Pangkor website. This is the trick. Many “gurus’ teach you how to make a no.1 spot for your website. But in fact the real trick is to generate a range of top positions for MANY keywords. How do we know the best keywords? There are many ways but only Sitesell has a Brainstormer that generates a huge list of good keywords related to a search. Brainstormer?  Can y

Special private Yangshuo tours
2007-12-14 22:11:48
I don’t know how it is with you but I like to see things few other people ever see. Yangshuo town has over the years developed into a major tourist attraction. Foreigner and local Chinese people love to see the beauty of Yangshuo and it’s famous limestone mountains. It’s clear enough why people love Yangshuo. You may think it’s easy to find the treasures of Yangshuo on your own. You will be able to find the treasures, at least some of them. But if you want to see the real gems, you still need a guide. OK, OK, I admit, I don’t like guide too much. However, they can save a lot of time and find  places virtually impossible to find without local knowledge. And you won’t have much time too. Jessie Lu has set up a private tour in and around Yangshuo. She visits places none of the other guides visit. Why not? Jessie has an extensive network of friends and family living in hidden villages where other guides simply never come. Even though I know Yangshuo
