Surgeons Push for Less Invasive Lung Cancer Procedures
2007-06-29 23:53:00
FRIDAY, June 29 (HealthDay News) - Less invasive lung surgery should become the first option for cancer patients, U.S. experts say.The procedure, called thoracoscopic lobectomy, "should be considered the standard of care for patients with early-stage lung cancers," Dr. Michael Reed, an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Cincinnati (UC) and a minimally invasive thoracic surgeon at University Hospital, said in a prepared statement. "But few surgeons offer the procedure because it's difficult and requires a lot of additional training."Only an estimated 10 percent of all lung cancer operations nationwide are minimally invasive procedures. However, these procedures result in faster recovery time and less pain for patients, Reed said.Thoracoscopic lobectomy is a minimally invasive lung surgery that uses several small incisions instead of a major chest incision that requires rib-spreading. Only a handful of academic medical centers, including UC, are actively training surgeo

A Matter of Fat
2007-06-05 02:07:00
Saddlebags, spare tires, muffin tops we've dreamed up as many names for body fat as Starbucks has for coffee. Even as otherwise sensible, well-adjusted adults, many of us spend a huge amount of time dwelling on our double chins, chubby ankles, or flabby arms. We're both fixated and repulsed: We hate our fat, but we can't stop thinking about it.Well, stop obsessing about your love handles for a minute and ruminate on this: your fat doesn't just sit there glob-like and idle. Fat is actually a great big gland, churning out hormones and other chemical substances that are essential to many bodily functions. Depending on where it's located, fat may protect you from developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Much of this research is just emerging, but when you've heard the latest, you'll never look at that little pooch over your waistband the same way again.Fat FundamentalsBasically, fat is stored energy. When you eat, your body transforms carbohydrates, protein, and

Health Tip: Playground Safety
2007-06-05 02:06:00
Before your child visits a new playground, parents should inspect the facility to be sure it's safe.To help protect your child from injury, the National Program for Playground Safety offers these guidelines: * Make sure that you or another trusted adult is always supervising your child's play. * To prevent possible strangulation, don't allow your child to play while he's wearing clothing with drawstrings. * The playground should have age-appropriate equipment in separate sections, so that younger children can avoid injury from older children's play and equipment. * Playground surfaces should provide cushion in the event of a fall -- surfaces that are concrete, grass, asphalt, gravel or packed dirt can contribute to injuries. Acceptable surfaces include hardwood fiber/mulch, pea gravel, sand, or rubber mats. * All equipment should be properly rooted to the ground, with no loose, rusting, or missing parts.

2007-06-05 02:04:00
Some stressed out parents in the Chinese financial hub of Shanghai have been searching for a prescription stimulant to give their children ahead of this week's national college exams , the Beijing News said on Tuesday.Their target is Ritalin, a drug used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) containing the active ingredient methylphenidate hydrochloride. Some parents were begging people like "Sun," whose son suffers from ADHD, to get the amphetamine-like stimulant from doctors, the newspaper said."I was puzzled why they needed the drug and only later understood that it was for their children preparing for the exams," Sun was quoted as saying."I went to the hospital four times in the past month and every time I had to cheat the doctor by saying that I had lost the previous dose accidentally."A record 10 million high school students will sit the two-day college entrance exam from Thursday, vying for only 5.7 million of university places.Pus

utrition Claims: Fact or Fiction?
2007-06-05 01:59:00
It seems that not a day goes by when my mail isn't filled with magazines and fliers advertising new ways to improve my health and overall nutrition. In fact, the American public is being constantly bombarded with health information in the media. While we can certainly trust some sources to provide us with sound health and nutrition advice, we need to be cautious because not everything you read or hear in the media is based on fact. If you are not sure how to determine the truth of a claim, here are some tips to help you separate the good from the bad: * If a diet, product, or program promises dramatic results in a short time without your needing to change your eating habits or lifestyle choices, the claims are probably false. We know that in order to see lasting results, we must adopt long-term lifestyle modifications, including healthy nutrition habits and physical exercise. There is no magic bullet that will make you healthier overnight. * Be wary of claims that a specific prod

Summertime Food Safety Tips
2007-06-05 01:58:00
Every time I turn on the TV or log onto the Internet lately, there's another news story about food recalls or food safety risks. Now that summer is here, it becomes even more important to remember and prevent the health risks that accompany food preparation during warmer weather. These reminders should help you keep your food safe: * Make sure you start any cooking project with clean surfaces and utensils - taking this precaution right off the bat will reduce the risk of spreading bacteria and food-borne illness. * After preparing raw meat or poultry, immediately wash your hands, all work surfaces, and utensils. And never bring any other foods into contact with the utensils and platters you've used for the raw meat or poultry. * Thaw foods in the refrigerator unless they will be cooked immediately after thawing. If a frozen food comes in a sealed package, it can be thawed in a cold-water bath. * Marinate steaks and chicken in the refrigerator as well. And remember: Never r

Eating Healthy on a Budget
2007-06-05 01:57:00
If you are committed to selecting healthier foods at the grocery store, you may have noticed that they sometimes cost a little more. As a dietitian counseling patients on good nutrition, I try to help clients stretch their dollars at the grocery store and yet still be able to buy some of the healthier items on the shelves. Here are ways to help you keep costs down and nutrition up the next time you visit the grocery store: * Plan out a week's worth of healthy meals before you head to the store: If you are focused on a list of key ingredients, you are less likely to be tempted by unneeded or unhealthy items. Research shows that shoppers without a list tend to buy more food, especially of the snacking variety! * Avoid going to the grocery store hungry. Again, you will be less tempted by impulse buys and snack foods. * Compare prices, both before heading out and after you're inside the store. If you have the time, go online and check out the store's latest promotions or weekly

Study: Diabetes drug use spikes in girls
2007-05-16 03:24:00
The number of adolescent girls taking drugs for Type 2 diabetes nearly tripled in just five years, while use of chronic medicines for psychotic behavior and insomnia roughly doubled among boys and girls aged 10 to 19, a study shows.Meanwhile, adolescents' use of drugs for depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, leveled off or dropped in the last two years, after widespread new warnings about safety concerns. The study, an analysis of prescription drug use from 2001 to 2006 among 370,000 insured children aged 10 to 19, was conducted by Medco Health Inc. of Franklin Lakes, N.J., the country's biggest prescription benefit manager, and released exclusively to The Associated Press.Experts say the findings raise questions about physical and mental health problems in youth, the appropriateness of putting them on strong, long-term medicines mostly designed for adults, and whether it might be better to focus on other strategies, such as counseling, exercise and change

Can Salt Make You Fat?
2007-05-16 03:16:00
I confess: I'm a saltaholic. I even salt my bread! Whether you're watching "American Idol" at home on your couch or the latest action flick at the multiplex, it's easy to snack on salty, crunchy nibbles straight through the credits. In fact, the average person's salt intake has increased 55 percent in the past 20 years! Here's a little trick that may help you avoid gobbling an entire tub of popcorn in a blink: Go easy on the salt, or skip it altogether.Just say no to that sodium urge. Why? Turns out that salting your popcorn may lead you to eat more of the fluffy stuff. Snackers in one study were given bowls of popcorn with either no salt, 1/2 teaspoon salt or one entire teaspoon of salt. And guess which ones consumed the most? That's right, the group that had the saltiest serving.Plus, all that salty food can also make you thirsty, which researchers say could have you reaching for sugary sodas and juices. It's no coincidence that consumption of carbonated drinks has also soared b

No Link Between 100% Juice and Kids' Overweight: Study
2007-05-11 22:45:00
WEDNESDAY, May 9 (HealthDay News) -- Drinking 100 percent juice won't boost young children's risk for becoming overweight, according to a U.S. study that looked at the dietary habits of 3,618 children, ages 2 to 11.ADVERTISEMENT"We did not find a relationship between 100 percent juice consumption and overweight among children. Even among the children who consumed the most juice, we found no association at all with the children being overweight or at risk for overweight," Dr. Theresa Nicklas, a child nutrition researcher at the United StatesDepartment of Agriculture's Children's Nutrition Research Center at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said in a prepared statement. The findings were expected to be presented today at the Pediatric Academic Societies' annual meetings, in Toronto, Canada.Drinking 100 percent juice also had no impact on the amount of milk kids consumed, Nicklas said. The mean daily consumption of 100 percent juice among the children in the study was 4.1 oun

Study: Young girls more likely to be fat
2007-05-11 22:44:00
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - As every Western nation struggles with child obesity, the Swedes are puzzled by an unusual blip in the data: Why are little girls more likely to be fat than little boys? A recent study by researchers at Sweden's Uppsala University showed that today's 4-year-old girls were six times as likely to be obese compared to 20 years ago — a bigger jump than among boys.ADVERTISEMENT"This indicates that there is a relatively recent change in our lifestyles that is behind this," said Ulf Holmback, the lead researcher for the study published in the April issue of Acta Paediatrica. "But it's difficult to say what that is."The weight increase itself was expected — Swedes, along with most other Europeans, have been getting heavier. But obesity experts are scratching their heads over the gender difference that emerges in obesity rates. In 1982, just 1 percent of all 4-year-olds were deemed obese. By 2002, 2 percent of the boys that age were obese, but 6 percent of the girls we

Healthy eating program helps slim school kids
2007-05-11 22:43:00
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The kids voted for their favorite vegetables, school cafeteria staff more accustomed to warming up frozen dishes learned how to slice fresh fruit and restaurants changed their menus.ADVERTISEMENTAnd the experiment worked. A program that pulled a whole town into helping its children eat better and exercise more helped stop the kids from gaining too much weight, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday. The children of Somerville, Massachusetts gained, on average, just less than a pound (half a kg) less than children who did not take part in the program, the researchers at Tufts University's school of nutrition in Boston found. And it got them to eat broccoli. For young children still growing rapidly, this was a significant success, study leader Christina Economos said in a telephone interview."All children are gaining weight because they are growing," she said. "We want to prevent weight gain over and above what they need to for development."They did, Economos and coll

'My Periods Stopped. I'm in Menopause, Right?'
2007-05-07 22:40:00
Wrong! Don't assume anything about what's happening with your body. Menstrual periods commonly stop during chemotherapy or hormonal therapy. This isn't a guarantee that you are menopausal, though. Blood tests that measure estrogen levels will help determine this. Why is it important to know for sure? Here are a few reasons:1. If she stops menstruating, a woman may assume she need not worry about birth control. That's a dangerous assumption, especially if she's being treated for breast cancer or is on long-term hormonal therapy. During these treatments, pregnancy should be avoided, not encouraged.2. Medications used in chemotherapy and hormonal therapy can cause congenital defects to the developing fetus. You may be thinking, "It's OK to have a baby. Bringing a new life into this world will give me happiness," but the timing of your pregnancy needs to be planned carefully. Actually, most cancer experts recommend that patients wait at least two years after finishing treatment befor

Seven Diseases Doctors Miss
2007-05-07 22:38:00
In her early 40s, Pamela Serure was the epitome of health. An energetic New York City marketing executive who'd grown tired of the rat race, she'd moved out to the Hamptons, started a juice business, and written a guide to yoga and fasting that catapulted her onto an international book tour. Celebrities including Alec Baldwin and Barbra Streisand swore by Serure's detox diet. Yet even her own regimen couldn't ease the puzzling symptoms Serure suffered: a burning in her chest, fatigue, neck pain, and a tendency to sweat profusely after just a short workout. Over the previous 10 years, at least a dozen doctors had labeled Serure's chest pain heartburn, her sweating a prelude to menopause, and her exhaustion chronic fatigue. They x-rayed her lungs, looking for pneumonia and bronchitis. "If they couldn't find anything, they would dismiss the whole chest thing," she says. In 1998, the 47-year-old Serure told yet another doctor about her symptoms. "You don't have pneumonia," he said.

Herbalife: Sells but Weeds and Illusions
2007-04-24 03:13:00
Herbalife, a well-known multinational specialised in the sale of slimming products and food supplements, benefits mainly from its far reaching network of hierarchically organised independent salesmen. As in the past, Test Achats draws the attention of consumers to the ineffectiveness of the slimming products of the Herbalife range. What is new, however, is that Test Achats has decided to sue this company for its practice of multi-level-sales which is illegal. The diet products of Herbalife: expensive and not good - For various reasons (not enough proteins, low energy value, too expensive), "Test- Achats" was always very critical with regard to the diet products of the Herbalife range. Their usefulness in weight control is far from proven. The reasons for the ineffectiveness of Herbalife's diet treatment are the following: no education to better food practices, products are systematically hypocaloric with health risks, a medicalisation of the way of life by the absorption of special prod

Nobel Prize Winner Didn't Disclose His Herbalife Contract

Louis Ignarro, who won a Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1998, endorsed a diet supplement for the heart sold by Herbalife International Inc. in exchange for royalties and then touted the ingredients in a scientific journal, without disclosing his financial interest to the publication. Ignarro's consulting company received at least $1 million as its share of sales of Herbalife's Niteworks between June 2003 and September 2004, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The bottles sell for $90 each for a month's supply and display Dr. Ignarro's signature and Nobel Laureate status on the label."He's a paid consultant, so it should have been disclosed,'' said Marcia Angell, editor in chief of the New England Journal of Medicine in 1999 and 2000, now a senior lecturer on ethics at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A Tribute to Our FounderMark Hughes 1956-2000The promise that became HerbalifeThe depth of Mark’s commitment and the strength of his vision came from personal tragedy–his mother died from unsafe dieting at the age of 36. Although he was only a teenager at the time, Mark made a promise to find a way to help people lose weight safely. He was determined to develop a nutritionally sound program that could produce life-changing results and share it with the world. Mark’s positive attitude kept him striving daily toward his goals. As he said, “Just do the best you possibly can. Tomorrow morning, when you get up out of bed, do a little bit better than that. The next day after that, do a little bit better than that.” This can-do attitude inspired others to join Mark in spreading good nutrition around the world.Making his vision a realityMark’s passion for developing a safe and effective weight-loss program took him to China, where he studied the nutritional benefits of herbs. 8 Simple Steps to Great Sleep
2007-08-20 03:05:00
Experts say it's possible to get a good night's sleep by making only minor adjustments. No magic's involved, just consistency. Try these tips for about 6 weeks, and you'll get better, deeper, sounder sleep. Stay on schedule. Your body loves a reqular sleep routine, so try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. That means no napping or sleeping in on weekends. If you can't fall asleep, get out of bed (go into another room if you have to), and do something quiet. Don't let yourself fall asleep outside the bedroom. Go back to bed when you're sleepy, and repeat this process as often as you need to during the night. Dress for sleep. Put on whatever's comfortable, but don't layer it on in bed. Body temperature drops prior to falling asleep, rises during the night, then falls before you wake up. Think lighter pjs rather than heavy ones. Upgrade your mattress. Give your body the support it needs to relax by sleeping on a good,

Coming Back From an Injury Severe ankle sprains, for example, can take 6 weeks or more to heal. But if there's only minimal swelling, and you're able to walk normally on the ankle, chances are it's mild and you'll be able to resume activity within a few days, says athletic trainer Mary Mundrane-Zweiacher. To loosen and strengthen an ankle that's been on the outs, trace the alphabet in the air with your toes. Next, place a towel on a wood or tile floor and scrunch it with your toes. For a fracture, you may be out 6 to 8 weeks and need up to a month more of rehab. Coming Back From Surgery If you've had an appendectomy, a hysterectomy, or anything else that's muddled your midsection, heed your doc's advice and sit tight for the allotted time (usually around 6 weeks). "If you have abdominal surgery, you're out for the count, because anything you do, even walking with vigor, can put pressure on the abdomen," says Pamela Peeke, M.D., a nationally recogniz

Asthma Frequently Asked Questions
2007-08-20 02:48:00
Q:What is asthma? A:Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by inflammation and spasm of the airways. This causes breathing problems such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Asthma can be triggered by environmental factors, infections, allergies, exercise, temperature changes or other airway irritants. Q:What causes childhood asthma? A:Asthma can result from environmental, chemical and infectious factors and may also be partially inherited. The majority of children with asthma have allergies, such as allergies to mold, pollen, dust, dust mites, pet fur, feathers, rodents and cockroaches. Even exposure to low-grade allergens (allergens that do not cause significant allergic reactions) may increase the severity of the asthma. In addition, allergies may play a role in undiagnosed asthma cases. Not all children with asthma, however, have allergies. They can ha

3 Diet Myths Busted
2007-08-20 02:47:00
Here's the real scoop on 3 circulating diet myths...1. Bananas are fatteningFALSE. One medium banana provides only 105 calories -- you’d have to eat at least 6 bananas to equal one New York slice of pizza! Bananas are also a good source of fiber (3 grams), magnesium (32 mg), potassium (422 mg) and B6 (0.4 mg). And since foods low in sodium and rich in potassium and magnesium can help manage normal blood pressure, incorporating bananas into an overall healthy diet may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. What’s more, this nutrient-packed, fat-free fruit is a great source of vitamin B6, which helps boost your immune system and assists in the formation of red blood cells.Enjoy them plain, sliced into cereal, mixed with nonfat yogurt or cottage cheese, tossed into a fruit salad to add a starchy consistency -- or peel and freeze for a yummy low-calorie frozen dessert. Obviously, watch out for banana “chips," which have added fat and sugar and are loaded with calories.2.
