The VPS Revolution: Getting The Most Host for Your Money
2007-08-13 13:06:15
I’m Tres Wong-Godfrey, one of the SysOps guys here at Spry. Over the next few weeks I’ll be writing about VPS hosting and why — no matter how big your business gets — it is an excellent choice for business hosting. In this first look at VPS hosting I’ll take a look at how a VPS scales to meet your business needs much better than an old-fashioned dedicated server. Part 1: Growing Your Server With Your Business If you already have a Virtual Private Server (VPS), congratulations; you already know what a value it is. You know how it can easily be upgraded to meet your business needs with zero down-time. You know that a VPS can grow with your business, allowing you to purchase just as much server as your business needs rather than what you might need in a year. If you’ve never used a VPS before, sit back, grab a beverage and let me tell you about the best thing to hit the hosting industry since load balancers. (more…)

HostingCon 2007
2007-07-31 16:15:56
Well HostingCon 2007 Chicago has come to an end. The conference boasted packed lectures, over 1000 knowledge-hungry attendees, and week-long networking opportunities with the hosting industry’s top executives and companies. Overall I think it was a well put together event, that presented a lot of opportunity to meet with other like minded professionals. I do feel that alot of companies were saying the same thing, or developing the same service/product that their competitors were. There was of course an exiguous amount of companies leading the way in innovation, however overall I believe that many companies in this industry are simply treading water. Either waiting to be bought out or grinding out revenue with their current customers for as long as they can. I do have to keep in mind though that many people in the industry like to keep what they are working on very close to the vest, for fear that the idea will spread like wildfire throughout the industry if it is talked about to

Move over iPhone — it’s time for iWater
2007-06-29 11:58:44
With all the iPhone hype today, this headline caught my eye this morning. “Last year, we spent more on Poland Spring, Fiji Water, Evian, Aquafina, and Dasani than we spent on iPods or movie tickets–$15 billion. It will be $16 billion this year.” There are lot of really odd things going on in the world when you sit back and think about it. United States obsession with bottled water is definitely one of them. We’re willing to pay nearly 5 times as much for a bottle of water than we will for the equivalent amount of gasoline in many cases. Hasn’t everyone complaining about prices at the pump right recently? “If the water we use at home cost what even cheap bottled water costs, our monthly water bills would run $9,000.” More than a billion people on this planet do not have access to clean and safe drinking water, yet the US is the number one consumer in the world of bottled water. For what it’s worth we do not have bottled water at Spry. We

When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth
2007-06-23 22:58:31
I just got through a fantastic short story, When Sysadmins Ruled The Earth . I came across the story via Wil Wheaton Dot Net. For those of you who watched Star Terk the Next Generation, Wil played Wesley Crusher. The story was quite moving, and anyone that has any sysadmin experience will appreciate it.

Did you celebrate Debian’s birthday?
2007-08-18 07:12:54
Well, Debian turned 14 on the 16th of August. That takes some thinking about. Although the number of Linux users has increased greatly in the past few years, it’s easy to forget how old the technology actually is (in relative terms). The Linux kernel we so love was Linus Torvald’s brainchild and has it’s own birthday on 17 September when it turns sweet 16. Take a look at the original announcement of the release of Debian, dated 16th August 1993: Original Announcement. Do you know how Debian was named? Well, the founder, Ian Murdock, combined the first name of his girlfriend, Deborah, with his own - hence, Debian. That also tells us how to pronounce Debian - I have heard many variants with ‘Deeebian’ being the most popular but take the two names and there you have it: Deb(orah)Ian. I wonder if there has been any release that has been as influential in the wider Linux community as Debian has proven to be. Possibly Redhat? Either way, Debian has been forked

Ruby on Rails - Active Record
2007-08-17 05:24:06
Ruby on Rails is becoming more and more popular and whilst it remain a very powerful tool in any web developer’s arsenal it is still a young framework. Rails v 2.0 will be a milestone release not only due to a great many enhancements but due to a change in the default behaviour of the ’scaffold’ creation - the default scaffold command will produce a RESTful framework for the model, controller and views. At the moment, you have to give a specific command (scaffold_resource) to have a RESTful outline automatically created. However, this is not about the future (no matter how exciting that may be), it is about the present and one of the things that many people have some difficulty understanding: Active Record . Exactly how does the database relationship work? Do I need a has_one or a belongs_to relationship? And what is this ‘through’ that I hear about? Well, Rails Envy has created an excellent video which explains many of these aspects from the basics to mo

Domain Registration - Research before you buy!
2007-08-22 15:04:58
Like all consumers, I love to find a great deal on something I want. And like most consumers, I research the object of my desire before I buy. I research everything; from shoes to cars, motherboards to airline tickets. I even research things like potential neighborhoods that I may move into (everyone should do this, by the way). The key is to do your research things BEFORE you buy to avoid potential problems and headaches. One area that I cannot stress enough the need to research is domain names. You may think that you have this fantastic idea for a domain name, but trust me, you NEED to check it out before you attempt to register with ANY registrar. Thousands of domain names are registered every day, and there are absolutely no guarantees that the one that you just though of is available. Domains are like snowflakes; no two of them are the same and there can be no duplicates, according to the almighty ICANN. That means that, even if the registrar that you choose SAYS the domain is ava

Thank God it’s Spry day!
2007-08-22 12:14:46
My name is Brian Winkle and I am the office manager for Spry. I came on board back in April. I found the job on craigslist. What caught my eye was the location of the office, it said exit 7-405, the same exit I live off. I had no idea there was a web hosting company behind the express mart that I have been buying beer at for the past two years. I lived only a half mile from Spry’s main office. Even though I have never been an office manager, I applied anyway because I have a background in web design, domains, and had a direct relation with enom, and I was ready for a new challenge. I had just ended an 18 month position setting up cookie cutter websites for an online registration company and I wanted to get back to work as soon as possible. I submitted a dozen emails and I got a reply from Cameron at Spry saying he would like to meet with me. I came in later that day for an interview. We talked for about an hour, covering the position, what Spry is, our backgrounds and o

VPS Revolution Part II: The Web 2.0 Server
2007-08-20 13:16:06
The Evolution of Web Services Remember the dot-com days of the Internet? Ah, the heady days of Altavista and Netscape, of <blink> tags and home-pages, when the Internet was a way to bridge the gap between your employees and your customers… The Information Superhighway exploded at the seams with sites dedicated to everything from kids and cats to restaurant menus and online retail outlets. Back in the days of Y2K, we were—it seemed—on the cusp of a technological revolution akin to Gutenberg’s press. Then the bubble burst. We all know the rest of the story. Many e-businesses that lacked fundamental planning went out of business. While it was happening, it almost seemed as if the Internet itself was in trouble. At the time it was pretty scary, but looking back on it now it’s evident that we were in the middle of a darwinian evolution of the Internet. It was survival of the fittest; only the best and strongest survived. The Internet has evolved to be better and

Wii want your postcards! - Contest results
2007-08-29 16:26:32
Well, it’s been a month since we first announced our “super cool but not very responsive so I blame Nintendo” Wii gaming console contest. I know it couldn’t of been my fault, it had a catchy name and everything. Here are the cards received, we want to thank.. both of you.. very much for the kind words! Denver, Submitted by Brian Papantonio | Front / Back China, Submitted by Kelvin | Front & Back Kelvin has unanimously been declared the winner, due to the coolness factor of the postcard. Hope he enjoys the Wii! A conspiratorial mind would say he knew this was going to happen all along. Hmm.. Maybe next time more of you will play along when the chances are this high of winning!

Go Seahawks!
2007-09-01 12:26:50
Last night I watched the Seahawks beat the Raiders at the Qwest field with some co-workers, thanks to Cameron. We started the evening at the Spitfire, one block up from our office. Everyone had a few drinks and around 6.30 we decided it was time to head to the game which started at 7pm just like everyone else. We got to the right bus stop but the buses were full and traffic sucked. So 5 guys decided to pack into a cab during the traffic jam and the other 5 took the bus. The cab ride was slow and uncomfortable to say the least. We got there five minutes before kickoff. I split from the group and got fresh drink at the bar one block from Qwest field, which is were we should have started the evening. After my refreshing beverage I headed on over to watch the game. Our seats were on the 300 level. This meant a lot of stairs to climb. So I was the last one in the group to make it but I only missed the first 10 minutes of the game. Party was on! The Seahawks did a great job in t

Instant Provisioning
2007-08-31 13:11:17
Recently I asked one of our employees to sign-up for several of our competitors product offerings. Before you jump to any conclusions, it was simply to test responsiveness of our competitors — not to get accounts and find out what features they offered The first 24 hours: 3 Auto-responders from billing systems 2 Companies provided no feedback 1 account was provisioned The second 24 hours: We emailed the 4 providers we had not received logon information from. 1 Responded and provisioned our order 1 said our order was deleted due to fraud 2 have still yet to reply The third 24 hours: We again emailed all the providers with outstanding issues. We received account details for our 3rd account. After 3 days I gave up on the remaining providers. It was quite an eye opening experience to see how difficult it could be to obtain VPS hosting. We at Spry/VPSLink pride ourselves on nearly instant provisioning. Here’s a new video Pierre put together to show how easy it is to start hos

Customer Support Philosophy
2007-08-31 12:41:36
I’m Todd Gunsolley, the Support Manager here at Spry.com, and I wanted to share with you a few thoughts about technical support and customer service, for the industry as a whole, as well as here at Spry and VPSLink - this will be a post in two parts, in this part, I’ll cover my history and some observations about support as a whole. Next week, I’ll cover Spry and VPSLink support philosophies in more detail. First of all, let me tell you a little bit about my experience in technical support for web hosts. I was first employed in IT beginning in 1999 by a VPS provider, vservers.com. My job there was to provide technical support and customer service to our unix customers. I truly enjoyed the job, as I was constantly presented with new challenges and worked to help our customers get through the technical problems that they faced in trying to keep their websites and email updated and functioning. The basic philosophy of our support team at vservers was to fix whateve

The Paper Trail of Wireless?
2007-09-17 15:29:38
So you decided not to buy the new Iphone online because you just couldn’t feel comfortable about your security eh? Should you really be that concerned about your identity being stolen online through purchases that, lets face it, are put through secure connections utilizing ‘https’ at the beginning of the address? Here are a few things to think about before having that bit of paranoia online. You’re driving just a few miles from home when a police unit comes into your rear view mirror. Not thinking much of it you continue on your way, eager to get home on that cushioned new couch to watch the football game. What you aren’t aware of however is the fact that the police unit on your six is now running your registration, wirelessly, through a server located at a dispatch center. Within a few seconds the officer is now reading and reviewing your entire drivers information which includes your address, date of birth, and other pertinent information via laptop. You apparently ar
