Bogon Aussie Words 101 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Came out of semi retirement this week which has been quite the shock to the system. I started On The Job training on Monday, and there really wasn't a lot of mucking around. After a few hours of orientation it was 'right, you're teaching half a lesson' and off we went. The actual teaching isn't that bad, the maximum number of students per class is four so you don't have to keep track of too many people at once. The training finished on Wednesday, so after going out for a few celebratory drinks that night, I had to drag myself out of bed to make it to my first real day at work yesterday. By drag myself out of bed I mean have a massive sleep in, as I don't start work till 17:00. Boo Yah. Yesterday was pretty full on because I taught five lessons back to back (we'd only ever done two in a row in training), but everyone's pretty helpful so it wasn't too much of a drama. I've decided to use this teaching job to australianise every student that walks in the door, you'll be hap Read more:Aussie

Love At First Sight 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Some of you predicted that I would come to Japan, fall in love and stay forever. Despite my best efforts to avoid this, I stand before you today and must declare that it has happened. I'd like you to meet Ruby:Isn't she beautiful? She also goes by the names 'The Red Dragon' and 'The Danger Mobile'. Picked her up at the local version of kmart for around a hungy bucks. Superb. She's got six gears AND she folds up if you want to take her on the train. Those attributes alone qualify her for automatic entry into the league of awesomeness. My roomate Fern (also pictured) bought some new wheels as well, and as you can see we are now clearly the baddest mother f.ckers on the block with our pimpin' rides. I was cruising with Ruby the other day wearing sweats, a hat and a gold chain, and some japanese dude stopped me in the street and wanted my autograph - took me a while to explain that I actually wasn't Snoop Dog but got there in the end. True story. My street cred may have dropped a Read more:First

4 Pocari's Out of 5 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The Mansion.Am now fully settled into the new abode - and loving it. Place is a fcking palace compared to the initial lodgings. New roomate is a legend as well. This joint is awesome - Fernando has already setup wireless broadband - hence the blog! Typing this out from the comfort of the couch. So my overall rating of Japan has now been bumped from an initial rating of 1, to a massive 4 bottles of pocari, out of a possible 5.Spent a bit of time today making our wireless connection a bit more secure. For the technically minded readers, you may not think that setting up a password for the router is a big deal, but try doing it when the config menu looks like this:Bit of help from the google translation website and I was away. It's funny how minor wins make you really happy. Like today I managed to track down some soap. Big win. Only took me four days, but a win none the less. Been cutting loose at the 100 Yen stores as well. They're basically shops with pretty much random stuff in them,
Worlds Best Coffee 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Mister Donut Coffee
Shop, Kumamoto Train Station.Made it to the bar in the wee hours of this morning, fantastic performance by the Soccerros. Quite an experience being in a very small bar surrounded by 40 japanese fanatics all wearing the Samurai Blues shirts and one of them persistently beating a massive drum. The bar had two screens, one showing the Japan v Brazil match, the other showing Australia v Croatia. The japs went nuts when they scored against Brazil, they're good fans as they kept on chanting the whole match even though they got drubbed.Pretty hungry this morning as I haven't really been eating that well. Walked by a Mister Donut shop which has a massive sign 'Worlds
Best Coffee', big call but I thought I might give it a shot. After another successful order using atrocious japanese (note to self - 'atsui' means hot. use this if you don't want iced coffee), out comes the coffee. 5 sugars later it was drinkable. I am also now familiar with the concept of everyone else
3 Friend Thursday 1970-01-01 00:59:59 My Room, J Murchison's Skankpartment.Over the last couple of days, I find myself having quite large mood swings, which isn't your friend. Tonight I was at my temporary home, trying to eat some dinner (re-fried tempura bought from the supi) but I really struggled. Didn't feel like eating, felt very unsettled. Snapped out of it though when I decided to go outside. Revelation of the day - if you go outside, as opposed to staying inside by yourself, you are more likely to meet people. Crazy, I know, but it works.Today I met three friends. First there was Hiroshi, who I met while utilising the free internet at the Kumamoto international centre. I helped him out apply for an Australian Visa (of all things) so now he's my best mate.Third was an undercover cop, also named Hiroshi. I'm cruising along on the treddly near the train station when this dude comes running up to me (in civies), whips out a badge and then starts asking me questions. I don't know if he just wanted to practice his Read more:Thursday
You Guessed It - James Murchison is a F.ck. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Kumamoto International Centre.Well I've landed in Kumamoto. Clocked up just over 29 hrs in transit, from the time I left 552A, caught two flights, three trains, and walked to my new flat. As feared the place was in a pretty miserable condition - 'bout five garbage bags were lined up against the wall (as they hadn't been taken out), toilet/bathroom were pretty dirty and my room had a few lovely spots of mould in the corners. My manager who met me at Kumamoto Station and walked me to the flat was pretty apolegetic, so much so that he called head office and it looks like I've been upgraded to another better apartment closer to the city - so things aren't all bad. James
Murchison (my soon to be ex room mate) wasn't home on Wednesday night when I arrived, although I met him this morning. Turns out that he's not such a bad guy (albeit messy) - he gave me the low down on life in Kumamoto, told me a few good places to eat and even lent me his bike for the day which I've taken full adva
Death, Taxes, and Maxi's Luck. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Another week in Japan has flown by. Managed to get out and about a little bit more this week, it's been good fun. However, I've made a discovery that not everything is different over here.On Thursday at Shu's bar there was a Yukata Party - Yukata being traditional Japanese clothing. The deal was that if you wore one then you got cheap drinks. Not having procured a Yukata yet I rocked down anyway after work, and ended up chatting to this little cutie named Tash:Anyway's, 30 minutes of what I thought was some solid groundwork later, the boys thought they better give me the heads up:Yep, she's married. Joel's expression pretty much sums it up. Thought I was tuning (and actually getting somewhere) some single chick, turn's out that I'd been trying to chat up someone's wife. Staring the smug look of defeat in the face, it was time to make a graceful exit and move on. Wasn't all bad though she's a pretty cool chick.Plan B presented itself when I moved to the other end of the bar, Read more:Taxes
International Relations - Maxi Style 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Greetings. In the time warp that is Japan it seems that another week has come and gone in a flash. Notable events seen this week include a sake party, starting Jap lessons, experiencing first hand what it feels like to be in a freak show, and doing my bit to boost Australo-Japanastanian diplomatic ties.On Wednesday night a couple of the other Nova teachers (Laura and Mary) decided to have a sake party at their apartment. So me and Fern head over, quite a few people turned up, and the order of the day was to drink either sake or another local liquer called sho chu. Deciding at the last minute that the 720ml bottle of sho chu we had between us might not be enough, I picked up another bottle from the 7/11 on the way. Turns out it was a reasonable call because four or five drinking games later we were already halfway through the second bottle. Ended up polishing off our supplies (one bottle each) and them some (resorted to raiding the girls' fridge for some excellent backup drinks such as Read more:International

Fight Club, Kumamoto Style 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So I is chillin' on a Sunday night after a productive weekend of teaching, drinking, studying and playing soccer, when I gets a text from my friend Gi. Gi happens to own a bar in Kumamoto, called Shark Attack, which we've been spending one or two nights at lately - so much so that were on 'texting terms' with the owner. It was a pretty short message but basically said there was a party going on, and that me and fern should come down. Shark Attack is a cosy little place, where the drink prices are reasonable, and here's the clincher - it has sand on the floor. Awesome. It's the closest thing you'll get to to drinking at the beach in the city.Being quite partial to a few casual sunday night social beers I decided to head in and have a look. Turns out it was some dudes birthday party, so the joint was pretty packed. That said, the place is not much bigger than a decent sized phone booth, so there was maybe 15 people in there.I was having a chat with a few peeps over in the corner o Read more:Style

Guest DJ #1 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Hey.Been a while since I last posted. Reason: Haven't had the internet for about three weeks. Moved apartments this week, I'm now holed up in a sweet new dig, but because of the move had to cancel our connection. Back online now though which is what you want. Haven't had time to put together a decent entry, so in the abscence of an entry from myself, I'd like to introduce a new section to the Max Danger blog - the Guest
DJ. I got an email from my friend who's travelling in europe at the moment with a few of her mates, I thought it was decent. So let's kick it off. The Morning After 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Greetings. Still alive in Kumamoto, having survived my first typhoon (1) last night. Bit of a disappointment really, didn't get to see a lot of action. Pretty much heavy rain and really high winds, myself and my roomates were a bit let down by the fact that we didn't see any cars being overturned/roof's flying off etc. We invented the game 'typhoon dare' which involved just going outside and walking around, to check if there was anything exciting going on down the street. Got a little bit of 'serious lean over while being held up by the wind' thing happening, it was kinda fun.It is definitely a change of concept not having to work nine to five, in fact pretty much no one I associate with is on regular hours, and has their days off on different days of the week. Combine this with having multiple birthdays, going's awayseses, new arrivals, and you've got yourself this equation: Any semblance of an excuse + multiple drinking buddies = big nights and good times - EVEN ON A SCHOOL Read more:Morning
I Still Got It. Or Have I? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Greetings everyone. Been a little while since I last posted, things have been cruising along nicely. Celebrated my 16th birthday yesterday (okay, okay, it may have been my 27th), and apart from spending my time pondering the fact that I'm now an old geezer, I've also been keeping busy by travelling, studying, training, drinking, socialising and working. So seeing that growing old is the theme of the week, I've put together a couple of observations:Subtle Signs That At 27 You Are Now Past It (#1)Your memory goes. Sitting in the bar the other night talking to my friend Bronwyn, and her friend who I didn't recognise. After a few minutes Bronwyn says 'Have you guys met before?'. I replied with 'No, we've never met' at exactly the same time that her friend said 'Yes, we've met before'. How's that for f.cking smooth? Apparently we met a few weeks ago. Whatever...Subtle Signs That At 27 You Are Now Past It (#2)Hangovers last for multiple days, instead of 10 minutes. Went to Fukuok
Ethical Dilemma's #1 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Hello Everyone! Been a while since I last posted, that's because lately I've been busier than a North Korean nuclear physicist. A typical day at the moment consists of waking up at around quarter past eight, doing homework for about 45 minutes, then off to Jap school at the YMCA. I finish up at the Y around 2:30, come home, have a quick nap (if possible), get ready for work then head into town for four hours of english teaching love. Home by around ten for some dinner, more homework and/or hitting the town. I've also been doing a bit of overtime as well because we're pretty short staffed at the moment. Apologies for the lack of correspondance, jap school finishes on friday so next week I'll be back on the emails.Given the above schedule, I headed out Thursday night for a couple of wind-down social beers, but by 3:00am they had mysteriously morphed into ten. I may have inadvertently stumbled on one of the ultimate truths of the universe there - if you want to gaurantee a big night,
Sunday Lunch at Mum 'n' Pops. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Last Sunday
headed out to the 'burbs of Kumamoto for some home cooked sunday lunch love. Dave, one of the dudes I met on the course who is from Tokyo, boarded with a host family for the duration of the course. We met his host mum on the final day of the course, and she invited the english students gang (Dave, Myself, Mari and Marcus) out for Sunday lunch. Of course, we obliged. Turned out to be possibly the best sunday lunch ever. You know things are looking good when you're greeted with this:A 2 litre can of beer. Boo Yah! HOW GOOD IS THAT - BEST COUNTRY EVER! Kind of puts those 375ml thimbles you p.ss weak aussies refer to as 'stubbies' to shame, really...So mum keeps on bringing out the food. What a spread it was. She laid out about eight different dishes on the table, the pick of the bunch was the fish caught the day before by pops. It was awesome. Also tried a few local specialties, including Basashi (again). Never would have picked it, but raw horse meat (with a little bit o Read more:Lunch
I'm so dangerous... 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So I went on a blind date the other night. Wasn't a blind date in the conventional sense of the term, it was more that when I met her, and teed up the date, it was 3am at a local club on a Saturday night. Suffice to say I was absolutely blind - so the next day had no idea whatsoever of what she looked like. Managed to recall that she was an American, so when we did meet up a couple of days later it wasn't too hard to spot her in the predominantly japanese crowd. Spent a fair bit of time at work before the actual date asking my students to help me come up with plan A (if she's hot, the best places in town to take her to sweep her of feet) and also a plan B (if she's not, the politest way to excuse myself in the shortest amount of time, without seeming rude). By the end of the lesson we had a nice little flow chart covering the various scenarios sketched out on the whiteboard. Luckily enough she was pretty cute, and being incredibly smooth (while also a touch dangerous

Welcome to the World, Jeremy Louis! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Nice work melsie and jamsie, in the successful implementation of 'operation baby'. Check out the newest addition to the Nash clan:In'e cute? Born yesterday, reportedly without too many hassles, mother and baby both doing well. I guess this means from this point onwards I should be referred to as 'Uncle Max Danger'...Congratulations james and mel!In other news, me other brother patrick is visiting Japan at the moment. Spent the last few days doing a couple of day trips in and around kumamoto. Headed up to Mt Aso, an active volcano, then hit some hot springs for a relaxing soak afterwards. On the way home we drove past two massive bronze cow statues by the side of the road. If that doesn't scream 'ride me' I don't know what does. Of course, myself and patrick had to oblige. Sure, some people might say 'that's really degrading to japanese culture you stupid obnoxious foreigner'. But if they did, they'd probably say it in japanese, so I wouldn't be able to understand it anyway Read more:Welcome

Da Joyfull Challenge! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Happy New Year Everybody. Like most of you, I have made some new years resolutions in an effort to have some impact in 2007. I've done similar things in previous years, without much success, so this year I've decided to take a different approach. Let me introduce Max Danger's Common 2007 Resolutions Solution Strategy:Drink less beer. Ok, so a lot of people I've spoken to have mentioned that they want to drink less beer in 2007. I find this offensive. Beer is the best invention ever (right up there with melted cheese), and as much as humanely possible should be consumed at every opportunity. However, if you still feel the desire to reduce your intake, there's actually no need. Just start hanging around with alcoholics. By comparison, your own consumption won't seem over the top, and you can feel a lot better about yourself when you crack you're first coldie at 6pm, instead of 8am, like your new mates.Save More Money. Again, this seems to be a common one, albeit totally unecessary Read more:Challenge
Ka-Go-Shi-Ma Dreaming... 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Aiight so before new years, me and a few peeps headed down south for a bit of a road trip. Had a few days off after boxing day, so thought we'd make the best of it. If you didn't already know, road trips are good times.Kagoshima is way south as far as Japan is concerned, and supposedly famous for an active volcano (Sakurajima) and kurobuta (black pork). Ok, so that doesn't sound like too much to get excited about. But it was less about the destination, and more about getting out of the city, on the road and seeing something new.The A-Team consisted of myself, fernando, em and another friend, azusa. Azu's friend Mai-chan came through with the goods and supplied us with a sweet ride, the 'street five', as Mai-chan didn't need her wheels cos she was in the U.S. for the holidays. The Street Five did a superlative job, so much so that I want to get one for myself. During the trip we tried to keep the in-jokes to a minimum for Azusa's sake, but that was easier said than done (true th Read more:Dreaming
Introducing - The DangerCam 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Ok peeps so it's been a while since I last posted, there hasn't been too much crazy action going on in Japanistan lately. That said, on Saturday I bought myself a brand spanking Canon Ixy 900 IS, which from this point forth shall be known as the DangerCam. Check this bad boy out:With 7.1 MP, 3.8x Optical Zoom and a 28mm lens, it's all love baby, all love. So I guess you can expect to see a lot more quality pics posted up here. And by quality pics, I mean:lots of self shots of melots of snaps of my massive gunsFor instance:The guy with the incredible pipes is me (of course), that's my friend tony on the left. And yes, I did have to take my jacket half off for this shot. What a trooper.Ok so my new cam is going to be great fun, that is of course until I get really drunk and lose it, like I did with my last digi cam. Being the new toy and all, I took it out to Fern's birthday drinks on Saturday night, took just the 109 photo's for the night. See below for some results.L to r: Lauren Read more:Introducing
Okinawa: Worst Trip Ever - Part 1 2007-03-09 01:49:00 As mentioned last post, an Okinawa
mission was on the cards last weekend. Here's a frame by frame replay of what went down. Warning, this is a bit of a long one, and also contains a fair bit of 'colourful' language. If you don't like the f word, don't read on.Thursday, March 1st 2007. Okinawa Mish Day 1.01:00 Wake up to the sound of the woman upstairs obviously enjoying 'relations'. Fall back asleep after a bit.06:00 Wake up to the sound of a rooster crowing. Sleepily curse the mope that owns a rooster in the middle of a fucking city. Drift back to sleep.07:00 Wake up again, this time to tune of metal rods being sawed, coming from the construction site next door. Decide that metal being sawed is my least favourite sound in the world.08:00 Alarm goes off, get out of bed, primed and ready to smash up Okinawa. Feel a little tired. Trudge to the fridge to grab some bread, am devastated to discover that there's not one fucking slice left in the house. No vegemite and toast for Maxi
Okinawa: Part 2 2007-03-13 06:42:00 Friday March 2nd 2007. Woke up pretty early after a reasonable nights sleep in my bed box, which was only interspersed occasionally with the roar of un-muffled motorbikes and trucks rolling past the window. We traipsed out of the hostel to be greeted by grey skies, grey skies, and more grey skies. No drama's though, we were of the opinion that maybe it'd clear up. Cruised past the rentacar shop and picked up our sweet ride 'goldilocks' that we'd arranged yesterday, then it was off to the port to catch a 9:00 ferry for Tokashiki Island and some beautiful beaches. At 8:58 when the ferry wasn't moving we checked our papers and discovered that the boat we were on wasn't actually the 9:00 ferry, it was the 10:00 (that happened to be going to the same place). But hey, whatever. Just another reminder that we are the worlds worst travellers ever, by this stage we had totalled acknowledged that fact already, so just snoozed it up for an hour. The ferry ride across was pretty cool, saw a m Read more:Okinawa
Matsuyama Mish 2k7 2007-04-22 13:30:00 Heeelllloooo! Must admit it has been a long time between posts. The danger blog is a fair bit behind real life, because this past month I've been busier than a North Virginian mortician (too soon?). Got to fill you in on a trip over to Shikoku, my family coming to visit, and also another couple of friends from Melbourne coming to check out Kumamoto town. But let's start with a sojourn over to the not so famous Japanese island of Shikoku, to hang out with Fozzy in his adopted home town of Matsuyama. With emsy's time in Japan coming to a close, the three of us ex RMIT alpine clubbers decided to catch up in the 'yama for a bit of a weekend send off.Managed to catch the right bus to the airport this time, got there nice and early and went straight through check-in, security etc. As both Kumamoto and Matsuyama aren't very big cities, the only direct flight available is with a rural carrier, which uses a 60 seater plan for the trip. As I was waiting in the departure lounge before board
The Family Comes To Town 2007-05-14 07:49:00 As introduced to the world a few months ago, this is my now 5 month old nephew Baby Jez:Jez recently came over to check out the japanasian hotties, and bought his support crew with him: his mum and dad (James and Mel) and also his ageing grandparents, Baz and Mez.It was the first time I'd seen the fam for about ten months, and also the first time I met Jez in person. Me and the fam did a lot of catching up, plus heaps of toursity stuff around kumamoto, and with four digital camera's between us quite a few happy snaps were taken (as evidenced below). Here's a shot of the first time I saw mum in almost a year:And James:The touring party was pretty tired from flights/train rides getting here from Oz, so we didn't do anything too spectacular on the first night, and Baby Jez was asleep (so I didn't get to play with him!) although the next morning it was all systems go:Cute huh? Girls Day Out 2007-05-26 00:17:00 So shortly after I told my parents to 'get the f*ck out - and stay out!', another two friends from Sunny Melbourne swung past Kumamoto to check out the Japanasian lifestyle. I met Miya and Alex at the station on a sunny Saturday afternoon, then it was a quick taxi ride back to mine to get base camp established. The girls were pretty tuckered out from spending most of the day travelling here from Osaka, so we decided to spend the rest of the day in a leisurely stroll up to the castle.Once we checked the castle off the list, we headed back to my place, only after spending about twenty minutes at the local konbini (convenience store, but they're heaps better than the ones back home) buying everything from groceries to premixed cocktails to make up. Despite Miya being on enough medication to disqualify her from Beijing 2008, and my own weak protests that I didn't really want to get drunk again, the first cans of Calpis Sour (an intriguingly tasty ready to drink cocktail which goes down Read more:Girls
Harmony Land Magic 2007-06-08 02:19:00 Seeing that Hello Kitty is like the best thing ever invented, it's no surprise that within our circle of friends there are a number of huge, huge fans. She also happens to have a dedicated theme park a mere four and a half hour drive from Kumamoto, appropriately named 'Harmony
Land'. Put these two facts together and you have yourself a recipe for road trip success. So a few weeks ago a bunch of us hired a car, hopped in and off we went on our Kitty-Chan Pilgrimage. Must admit that 5 people in a compact japanese car was pretty tight, but we managed to get there without too many problems, it only took about half an hour after we stopped for feeling to return to my legs. Here's a happy snap of the crew at the pearly gates: (left to right: Chris, Maggie, Heather, Me and Emer). The amusement park was a touch creepy really - no doubt built in japan's economic boom thirty years ago, now it's a little bit aged and worn, without being too run down. It was also kind of deserted. Glad that I w Read more:Magic
Dave Danger? 2007-09-11 08:36:00 Ok it's been a long while between posts. I'll admit it, I'm the worst bloggerer ever. I'm a little bit behind the eight ball on the updates, you'll have to bear with me. One minor reason is that I broke my arm about two months ago playing soccer, that put a bit of a restriction on my movements. The other reason is that I've been super busy trying to find a new apartment (again) which isn't easy anywhere, let alone in Japan. After deciding that squatting in the Nova apartment (big thanks to Tony) was no longer my scene, we finally found and organised a new place, which I've since moved into (and the long awaited internet connection is now up and running). Here's a new section: From the Mailbag. One of the billions of dangermites (that's my new name for Danger

Here we are, (insert place name here), 2007, Part 1. 2007-10-28 10:27:00 Ok so here's the belated run down of an 8 day road trip 2k7, where me, Micky and Fern totally smashed Mt Fuji, then tore it up in Tokyo, Kobe and Hiroshima on the way home.Part 1 - EmbarkationTuesday Night, July 31st 2007.So I knocked off work at 21:00 and hurried home to load up the car. Micky and Fern were at the apartment ready to roll, after a quick change of clothes we jumped into the freshly hired Mazda Demio ready to smash Mt Fuji. PRTE^ levels were pretty high, everyone was looking forward to travelling halfway across Japan. As you can see, Chuck Norris beard levels were also pretty up there.I took the first driving shift, and after half an hour on the local roads we made it to the expressway, where we would be spending a lot of time and doing a lot of k's. After a couple of hours it was time for a driver change, so I jumped in the back, spread out (as much as you can in a hatchback, anyway) and grabbed some z's. Fern took the next shift followed by Micky, and we kept going Read more:insert
Here We Are, Part II - The Ascent 2007-12-28 00:52:00 Thursday, 2nd August, 2007.With the early morning movements of the other backpackers thwarting our sleep-in attempt, we were up at a reasonable hour on Thursday morning, and feeling pretty fired to smash fuji to pieces. The first order of business was to find a decent breakfast, and luckily enough there was a Gusto family restaurant around the corner. Steak and potatoes was the unanamous pre climb choice and it got the job done.Next move was to stock up on essential mountain climbing equipment, such as a portable barbeque. It had been the idea for a while to have an aussie bbq at the summit, in order to do this we obviously needed to purchase a barbie, so purchase a barbie we did. It was a little beauty. Also along for the ride up to the top were a couple of little fold out chairs, which w Read more:Ascent
