Man Undergoes Surgery To Better His iPhone Experience: Hoax!
2007-08-14 13:00:00
I was fooled by this story until it was pointed out that this story, indeed, is a fake. If you have not heard this story yet, I am sure you probably will. Supposedly, 28 year old Thomas Martel, found himself manipulating his cell phone to be a rather difficult chore. His options were to go with a different cell phone or undergo surgery so he can own an iPhone . The choice he made was pretty clear--undergo surgery! A new procedure called “Whittling” was said to involve filling down the bone, and reconstructing muscles and fingernails, creating a nicer constructed thumb.  I found this really crazy and was a little skeptical as I have never heard of the procedure, but had hope that someone had gone through a surgical procedure to actually own an iPhone. That would be true dedication, however, a little strange. I am somewhat curious though--would anyone undergo surgery to use his/her iPhone??

iPhone As A Gaming Platform
2007-08-14 09:00:01
The most popular contenders in the mobile gaming arena are Nintendo’s DS system and Sony’s PSP. Any chances of beating either will be tough but what may pose a threat and a handful of memorable Sony quotes could be the iPhone and one factor: innovation. Currently Nintendo has hit the prime spot especially amongst consumers in the price aspects of a handheld gaming device and features that everyone can love. The PlayStation Portable is a media device and a gaming machine all in one and while It doesn’t sport the most amazing features, its customizable Software make it a favorite amongst more tech savvy users. There also has been some rumors that Apple may provide some serious competiton to Nintendo in the portable gaming market so I thought I would delve into this and evaluate Apple’s potential approach. Essentially Apple and Nintendo have been working on tehcnologies similar to the accelerometer in that a device will be able to sense where it is and react accordngly. This

Video: iJustine Gets Her First (Huge) iPhone Bill
2007-08-14 08:31:19
The humdrum act of opening a phone bill doesn't usually attract a lot of attention. But when Justine Ezarik, 23, of Pittsburgh, Penn., paged through the first AT&T (T) bill for her new Apple (AAPL) iPhone in front of a video camera, people took notice. As of this morning her one-minute six-second film clip had been viewed 96,674 on her website and widely reposted on the Internet (the YouTube version is pasted below). Ezarik, a freelance graphic designer known on the Web as iJustine, was trying to make a point about how large the bill was -- not in terms of money ($274.81), but in terms of size (300 pages). It came, as she puts it in her video, punching the words for emphasis: "In. A Box" As others have noted, AT&T feels inexplicably obliged to report in printed form every phone call and data transfer, even the ones that are free. In the case of Ezarik, who told Gizmodo she sent 30,000 text messages that first month, the result is page after page of itemized $0.00s. Perhaps no

iPhone unlocked for use with any carrier’s SIM
2007-08-14 08:19:03
Could it be true?  Is the iPhone really unlocked ?  Well, sit down and steady yourself, because the answer is yes.  Unlike previous methods which required tricky-to-locate v1 SIM cards and external SIM reader/writer drives, over at the Bladox forums they’re detailing how to do it with simply a blank TurboSIM and the iPhone itself.  Those who have tried it out report full access to EDGE and SMS as well as incoming & outgoing calls, although doubts are being raised about the dedicated YouTube client.   (more…) Share This

Podcasts On Your iPhone
2007-08-14 06:00:00
I just posted a special episode of one of my four podcasts - Light On Light Through - and realized, as I was finishing up the show notes, that podcasts are doubly relevant to iPhone s. You can of course browse the web via iPhone, and find podcasts just as you would do on your computer. But there are several sites that serve you podcasts on telephone - including your iPhone - free of charge.  Podlinez.com is the one I use - both to upload my own podcasts and to listen to others.  I just took a look at their page, and, guess what, among the most recently added podcasts are three about the iPhone. Podlinez has more than 700 podcasts available for your phone.  You can easily browse through the site, and find ones you like. And, I don’t know exactly why, but there’s something especially enjoyable about listening to podcasts on your phone.  If you have a car with Bluetooth (I drive a Prius, which does), you can hear the podcast over your radio speakers… If

iMac and iLife: Drawing Techno-Atheists Into the iFold
2007-08-14 06:00:00
One by one, Steve Jobs is out to win us over to the Mac. With the new iMac desktop computers and iLife '08 software introduced last week, Apple is making great strides in creating attractive and easy-to-use computers that are different. If you are a video-editing aficionado, or even a beginner, Jobs has you now. The most interesting feature in the new iMac is contained in the new version of the iMovie video-editing software that comes free with the new desktops. The iMovie software is part of iLife '08, a big leap forward in the digital lifestyle suite since iLife '06.

It’s the little things
2007-08-14 06:00:00
The original 85W MagSafe adapter on the left and the NEW 85W MagSafe adapter on the right.   If you have a MacBook Pro, one thing you’ve probably noticed is how freakin’ big the AC adapter was. Apple has quietly addressed this and made a NEW 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (Part# MA938LL/A) available. I ordered mine immediately when I found out about it as my notebook bag is already heavy enough. Anything I can do to lighten the load is worth it. This new adapter is on par with the MacBook adapter which is a 60W MagSafe Power Adapter. Although the MacBook adapter will power a MacBook Pro, it doesn’t provide enough juice to charge the battery. So you really want the 85W adapter if you have a MacBook Pro. The 85W adapter will work with either the MacBook Pro or MacBook. Now if only the folks over at iGo could figure out a way to make a MagSafe tip for their universal adapters (or get Apple to license the technology to them), I’d be in heaven.

WSJ goes inside huge iPhone manufacturing city
2007-08-14 02:59:54
Willy Wonka bundled up the whole Oompa-Loompa tribe and brought them to live in his chocolate factory; I don’t think the 270,000 workers at the Hon Hai factory in Shenzhen, China were at risk of being gobbled up by rotten Vermicious Knids, but they too live in a wondrous place creating items that bring joy to many.  No, not candy, but iPhone s, Wiis and Motorola cellphones.  The Wall Street Journal won a golden ticket and took a tour of the facility.   (more…) Share This

To Reiterate: iPhone And DS Will Go Head-to-Head
2007-08-14 02:41:24
Nintendo owns the portable gaming market. They have since they created it with Game & Watch in the mid-’80s and then revolutionized it with Game Boy in 1989. Many challengers have risen and fallen over the 18 years since. But as I predicted the day the iPhone was released, a reckoning is due between Apple and Nintendo in the coming years. As GigaOM reported today, Nintendo has filed a patent for a tilt-sensitive handheld console (a perfect companion to the motion-based Wii). Meanwhile, the New York Times claims Apple is stealthily adding game functions to the iPhone. There’s nothing stealthy about it. You create a portable device capable of gorgeous graphics, pristine audio and driven by a multitouch interface, you’re already there in the first place. Let’s go back to the prediction from Jan. 9, shall we? And multi-touch in iPhone is significantly more flexible — it’s made to interpret complex gestures with more than one point of input. There are

Google Video workaround for iPhone

Relive The Intel Sticker Question Fiasco
2007-08-14 02:23:14
Following the brief Apple Event last week where Steve Jobs rolled out new iMacs, iLife and iWork, the entire executive committee took a rare press conference. Though the attendant press peppered Steve and co. with good questions, one stood out for its ineptitude. Bob Keefe of Cox Newspapers, asked Apple why Macs don’t carry the “Intel Inside” stickers. No, really. Steve, of course, replied that Apple likes its own stickers better, which is the best possible answer, given the circumstances. MacWorld has the full audio of the question and the half-laughed response to Keefe. It’s definitely worth it just for the reception of Steve’s answer. Still, it does say something about how far outside the realm of typical business reporters Apple’s strategies are that people still might not understand the whole notion of a nice, clean design after all this time. And really, the question is barely different from asking, “Why isn’t the battery on the iPh

Sorry for the inactivity over the last week, everyone. A lot of traveling for work, coupled with a massive layover in Kentucky, has kept me from blogging. I’ve got  a lot in the works, including an overview (and gentle mockery) of the first-ever issue of MacWorld from February 1984, featuring a profile of Mac fan Bill Gates (yes, I’m serious). First Native iPhone Game “Lights Off” Released
2007-08-14 01:57:34
And we’re off to the races. Despite Apple’s interest in restricting iPhone development to themselves and trusted third-parties like Google, clever programmers have delivered native software for the device — including an addictive-looking game called “Lights Off,” released today by Delicious Monster. It’s a standard puzzle-game — tap the buttons to turn out all the lights in the 5×5 grid — but the presentation is very slick, and the iPhone interface alone makes it more compelling than it would be on OS X for Mac. As with all unsupported iPhone software, it takes some warranty-voiding mojo to make “Lights Off ” install, but the app’s creators, Lucas Newman and Adam Betts, helpfully include full instructions:   Installing third-party applications on your iPhone is not for the faint of heart. For more in depth instructions on iPhone modifications, look at the iPhone Dev Wiki. 1. Download iActivator and use it to &l

Zork lives on iPhone! Frotz Z-Machine Interpreter for iPhone v0.1
2007-08-14 01:23:38
iPhone NES emulators and iPhone Doom ports are all nice and dandy, but some people crave for even more classic games… That’s where Frotz Z-Machine Interpreter for iPhone comes in. Frotz is an interpreter for Infocom games and other Z-machine games, and iPhone Frotz is the iPhone port of the program made by spathiwa. So now you could finally enjoy Zork, Adventure, or Rogue on your iPhone! Note for everyone that was born after text games stopped being popular: these games otherwise known as interactive fiction allow you to control your character through text-based interaction (in other words, there’s no pretty pictures to stare at, but some of these games were so immersive that people played them for months). Author’s note: Requires a jailbroken/sshd-enabled phone to install. To install from binary distribution, download and extract the iphonefrotz.tar.gz file. Copy the resulting Frotz.app directory to your iPhone. Create a directory /var/root/Library/Frotz/Gam

New HTC Shift Released
2007-08-14 00:46:42
HTC has finally released its upcoming PDA/UMPC entitled the shift. Well, they have at least released it in Korea. The HTC shift is quite revolutionary, whereas up until now, if you wanted to do even the most basic of functions on your UMPC you had to fully power it on and begin sucking away at that battery, with the Shift , this is not the case. There are separate OS and processors for use at your disposal. (more…) Share This

iPhone D&D game dice roller
2007-08-18 10:07:28
Not really a game on itself, but it could be quite useful when you’re playing a heated game of Dungeons and Dragons and want to make sure no one is cheating. iPhone Dungeons and Dragons dice roller is a free online program that allows you to roll D&D dice even when you don’t have any. Dungeons and Dragons is of course the original table roleplaying game that’s still much in use nowadays. You may access iPhone Dungeons and Dragons dice roller program at http://yoav.org/dice/. But make sure you have an Enchanting Device of at least +4 GB for maximum optimization (of course +8GB and cape of Enduring Boredom +1000 would be even better, but optional). Bookmark to:

Merit and Flaws in the Second iPhone Lawsuit
2007-08-18 07:43:25
A second lawsuit was filed this week against Apple (AAPL) and AT&T (T) charging fraud for neglecting to inform early buyers of the iPhone of the costs involved in maintaining a working battery for the life of the phone. The suit, filed in a Northern District of California court on Monday by Sydney Leung on behalf of a class that could include hundreds of thousands of customers, is almost a carbon copy of the class action filed in July by Jose Trujilo et al., and the reaction of both Apple partisans and nominally independent news sites has been, if anything, even harsher this time around. Gizmodo, for example, which broke the Trujilo story, describes the plaintiff as "another clueless moron" and calls his complaint the "Stoopeedest Lawsuit Ever." The legal papers filed do commit the same blunder of claiming as "fact" that the battery "must be replaced" after 300 charges -- a misreading of Apple's iPhone battery information page, which says that the battery "is designed to ret

Free iPhone Brickshooter Game
2007-08-18 07:34:38
Brickshooter is a free online puzzle game for Apple iPhone . The game is quite simple, with the objective being to destroy bricks of different colors located in the middle of the screen (when you attach bricks of the same color they explode). When all the bricks are eliminated you go to the next level. Obviously optimized for the iPhone, iPhone Brick Shooter game is available for play online free of charge at http://www.brickshooter.com/online/?iphone. And while the game seems like childsplay at the first few levels, it does become much more challenging later, so don’t overlook it just because you thought the first level was easy. Bookmark to:
