A Hopped-Up Brew
2007-08-13 09:54:28
This post will put an end to the debate concerning the favourite brew (beer) of the praying mantis in Singapore. Photographic evidence to the left confirms that Erdinger is the beer of choice when listening to live music in the balmy Singapore evenings. This praying mantis had turned up especially to hear the performance of Lila Drums at Timbre on Saturday evening! When asked what he was praying for, he replied “World Peace.” Share This

About You, About Me, Let’s Write About Us!
2007-08-12 21:54:26
Sometimes we find it hard to write about ourselves, but apparently the ‘About Us’ page is key to blog success. I subscribe to a site called Working At Home on the Internet (I don’t, but I find the articles useful), and the following post caught my eye. Barbra Sundquist presents How to Write a Short Bio or “About Me” Page posted at Barbra Sundquist, saying, “This practical article provides a template for how to write a professional bio or an “About Me” page. Why do you need a professional bio or “About Me” page? You’ll use it for a range of networking and marketing purposes: on your website or blog; listing yourself on job registries; summarizing your expertise for people introducing you at a speaking engagement; or attaching to the end of an article you’ve written.” Now I need to relook at mine… especially seeing as Deborah couldn’t find my ‘Contact Me’ page - I may need to do some adjustments. Gadget Week
2007-08-11 02:07:17
It’s been gadget week here in OzLady-land… Erik and Cheryl (especially Cheryl) will be so pleased to learn that we got a new HP Colour LaserJet Printer. It prints like a dream, and hooked into my network via a network cable in a snap! Just awesome. Combine that with the new laptop my Cable TV company gave me for renewing my subscription with them, and I’m smokin’! (A Compaq wide screen with Windows Vista - whoo-hoo!!!) As usual, however, I can’t include something cool up here without sharing what I have learned from the experience - and there was a really useful lesson on printers that I think everyone might benefit from. Of Speed and Versatility!!! The model of printer that I actually bought was the HP Color LasterJet 2600n. The main competition was the Samsung CLP-510N. I have a high-end Lexmark c720n that cost me over $2.5K when I first purchased it 4 years ago, but the colour laser printer market has moved so much in the last 3 years, that these model

Novel Approach - eBit by eBit
2007-08-10 10:50:00
Ever feeling a yearning desire to re-read Jane Austen’s Persuasion? Perhaps you’re more inclined towards Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne? Or how about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein? Does Don Quixote, Gulliver’s Travels, or novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, or Oscar Wilde tickle your fancy? No time? That’s OK - Daily Lit will email them to you, in small chunks (about 2 pages) every day. Or you can subscribe via RSS. Either way, these classics are free, and you can read them at a casual pace in your email every day (and even every week day, if you prefer to read them in your work email address). Enjoy! Do You Want Me To Interview You?
2007-08-09 10:56:28
Yes please, Deborah! So here goes… Hope it is okay if I leave this here. I didn’t see a contact/email link anywhere… Note: At the top of the page - but you’re right - it’s too obscure! Thanks! What a treat to have the opportunity to interview you! I fear I was soon to be typecast into the role of interviewing only male bloggers. All the testosterone was a bit suffocating; as I’m sure you’d agree. You recently divulged the origination of your blog name: “Oz” for Australia and “Lady” because of your gender. Somehow I always thought you were a fan of the story about Dorothy, Toto and the unfortunate tornado that ripped through their Kansas home. Nevertheless, what in your life is lacking the most right now? A little bravery, as the lion sought? Some smarts, like the scarecrow needed? Or some heart, for which the tin man was searching? Please be sure to elaborate. At the moment the first thing that springs to mind is a little time and a little sleep. I am

Hungry? A good feed… Links and Information for Bloggers
2007-08-08 22:22:49
Some of what I post here on this blog is technical - and the technical references serve as either bookmarks for myself, or references for my online friends to benefit from. How do I come across even half of this information? I use a RSS feed reader - and subscribe to feeds that have topics that interest me. Using Google Reader really helps, as I can go through feeds on my mobile phone, or at any computer and use keyboard shortcuts to navigate and bookmark for future reference. At the moment I work through 27 feeds a day… but that’s not a lot compared to some. If you are new to RSS, you can try Google Reader with these simple how-tos from Lifehack and Webware. I decided to link some of my bookmarks here, so that I can share them with you, as well as save them for myself. To keep it in a blog format, however, this post should at least have a theme, so this post’s links are all related to Web and Blogging Tools. So here we go… Google Cheat Sheet Includes 2 down

Support Blog Day 2007
2007-08-07 19:28:27
A regular commenter here, and fellow blogger JohnC has a link from his site to the Blog Day 2007 site (click on the image to the left). In short, it’s basically a day when we raise awareness of small blogs (not just the so-called ‘A’ listers). It has some basic instructions: BlogDay posting instructions: Find 5 new Blogs that you find interesting Notify the 5 bloggers that you are recommending them as part of BlogDay 2007 Write a short description of the Blogs and place a link to the recommended Blogs Post the BlogDay Post (on August 31st) and Add the BlogDay tag using this link: http://technorati.com/tag/BlogDay2007 and a link to the BlogDay web site at http://www.blogday.org I encourage you all to participate, as it’s us small fry that link to the larger sites that make them big - so let’s link to new sites as well. Opinionated Poll Dancing!
2007-08-07 06:39:55
Inspired by David’s recent polls, I figured that there may be others out there who might benefit from the Mashable post on Online Polling. Here they list 40+ Online Poll sites, which vary in terms of those that you have to visit the site to take or participate in a poll, or those that can be embedded in your website, so that visitors will (hopefully) not leave your site in order to participate. I have shortlisted a few here that are useful for bloggers wishing to embed a poll in their site (other than using the standard Google tool available with Blogger): FreePollKit - Lets you insert HTML snippet polls into your existing site. FreeWebsitePolls - Polls for websites or blogs with up to 20 choices. PollDaddy - Allows users to create polls and use them on their websites, blogs or even share by e-mail. PulsePoll - Lets you create a poll with and grab some script to paste in your site. SurveyPopups - Embed on your site and see what your visitors are thinking. For those that have

Time To Do…
2007-08-06 23:10:49
I owe Deborah a response for her interview questions… I owe Cuckoo a comparison between Blogger and Wordpress… I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go… To do lists don’t work for me, but I’m going to try again. I have this post on How to Master an Overwhelming To Do List to help me… wish me luck! [And I’ll try and get the posts I owe out this week] Share This

Travel Story
2007-08-06 22:18:56
Recently, my niece went to China. My brother gave her the advice to point to the Great Wall of China and say “does that keep the rabbits out?” At first the reference was lost on me, but I found it amusing (given the history of rabbits and fences in Australia), but my Dad pointed me to the fact that the advice given by my brother was based on a TV commercial. The father in the ad says that the Great Wall of China was built by the Emperor of China - Emperor Nasi Goreng (Malay/Indonesian for fried rice)… LOL. Apparently there are now a number of teenagers in Australia that think there really was an Emperor Nasi Goreng! Share This

Theme: I Love Wordpress for Blogging
2007-08-15 04:08:09
I thought I’d put that title there in case you weren’t sure. I’m always trying to convince Blogger bloggers to convert… and I do have a comparison coming up, but I guess where Wordpress is more flexible and adaptive, Blogger is just plain simpler to use. Having said that, I like Wordpress themes the best, which is why I am putting together this post on Wordpress Theme s. By the numbers… Workers stressed out by never-ending email!
2007-08-15 00:38:17

Before we went away…
2007-08-21 04:57:44
Obviously, pets aren’t crazy about you going away… and they can often tell when you are about to leave. My littlest one, Buster, decided that he was going wherever Mummy and Daddy were going, and that he wouldn’t be left behind. LOL Very cute! Share This

My Theme Broke!
2007-08-21 04:15:03
I don’t know what did it, but my theme broke, so I have put in this new theme until either (a) I fix the old theme, or I decide to keep or customise this theme… or possibly even get a new theme! Sorry if you liked the other one, but Internet Explorer kept doing weird things to it. Not Happy with Microflop Microsoft at the moment. Share This

Printed Bull
2007-08-21 00:16:09
I like using PDF documents for email and website downloads… why? Because they are generally smaller than a Word document, and the format is preserved, and it doesn’t depend on what fonts or version of software is on the recipient’s system. Yesterday I downloaded and installed BullZip, which allows me to complete PDF creation just like I would print using a printer: Print, and select the BullZip printer instead of your normal printer, specify the filename you want to call the new PDF, and voila! A new PDF document. AND IT’S FREE! Download BullZip from here. (Note that it’s a two-stage installation) Share This

Forgot to Put the Sign Out
2007-08-20 08:28:39
Dear reader, dear reader… my posts have been sparse this week and for that I heartily apologise. I went on a business trip to Vietnam, managed to buy 2 pairs of shoes and get a shirt made in between losing my voice the day before I had to talk at a 3-day seminar. More to come, but first to tackle the 5 days worth of emails while I was away… Share This

Car Logos - This One’s for DH
2007-08-18 12:02:50
Dearest Husband is nuts about cars… so I thought I’d throw this one in… courtesy of Ridelust, here is where the name Volvo came from: In Latin the word Volvo means “i roll”. The circle with arrow of the Volvo logo is the symbol for iron, which was used to make Sweden’s main industrial product of the country back in the day: steel. Check out Ridelust for the origin of more car logos. Share This

Giving Away the Farm…
2007-08-23 00:12:26
Well, perhaps not the farm, but I thought perhaps if some of the photos that I take are worth something to someone, then there might be some use in me giving them away for use, royalty free! So I have submitted and been accepted by one of the royalty-free image services that I recommended a few posts ago, and you can now download this photo for free at sxc.hu (or click on the image in this post). If you are so inclined, perhaps some of you happy snappers (aka photographers) could submit your images and photos as well. Share This

Have Dog, Will Travel
2007-08-22 01:55:37
Keeping in theme with my other post related to animals and travel, this was a snap taken from a taxi as we were driving to another shopping or food destination in Ho Chin Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam. As someone who lectures in logistics, I am always amazed at the inventiveness of people who are determined to get goods to travel, but this guy had built a custom seat for his German Shepherd! Bloody fantastic is all I can say, and he was so proud of his dog… he sat up straighter on the bike and posed while riding as we sped past! LEGEND! Share This

OzLady.com to Participate in Blog Action Day
2007-08-22 00:49:17
Most bloggers I read like to participate in something worthwhile, so now is the call to action for the environment. The Blog Action Day is an annual event, and every year it is dedicated to a worthy cause. THE ENVIRONMENT I don’t know anyone who doesn’t think the environment is a worthy cause, and sometimes we feel powerless to do anything about it - so now you can help create awareness. Click on the image to the right to visit the Blog Action Day website, and read about how you can assist in the 3 steps: Blog about the environment on 15th October, 2007 Contribute any blog earnings from that day to the Blog Action Day cause Create awareness about Blog Action Day Share This

Lanterns in Vietnam
2007-08-21 22:10:27
Let it never be said that my DH doesn’t like to shop. Unlike most women, you will never hear me complain about my husband’s unwillingness to go shopping for shoes or for clothing… he is a Singaporean through and through in this respect. [Note: It is said that Singaporeans have two pasttimes - shopping and eating!] Fortunately, these shopping expeditions in foreign countries have us traipsing across many city blocks, and winding through many city alleys, and sometimes when you wander, you see the simplest, and yet the most amazing sights. While I do not have the experiences of Stacy, nor the penchant for snapping impromptu photos like David, however I did find this stall of hanging lanterns, which were made of plastic. I note this because most lanterns in Asia are generally made of paper. The plastic, while a little tacky, gave off a really bright, pleasant light when grouped together, so I took this shot. Joke: Great Sex
2007-08-31 10:59:41
The Jewish man said, “Last week, my wife and I had great sex. I rubbed her body all over with schmaltz (chicken fat), we made passionate love, and she screamed for five full minutes at the end!” The Frenchman boasted, “Last week when my wife and I had sex, I rubbed her body all over with butter. We then made passionate love and she screamed for fifteen minutes!” The Italian man said, “Well, last week my wife and I also had sex. I rubbed her body all over with olive oil.We made love, and she screamed for over six hours!” The other two were stunned. The amazed Frenchman asked, “What could you have possibly done to make your wife scream for six hours?” The Italian man said, “I wiped my hands on the curtains”. Share This

Theory of Relativity
2007-09-22 01:55:26
[Written on a plane trip] As an Australian, I find that I am less concerned by distance than some of my Singaporean friends. One of the things about Australia (and I daresay something that Americans will relate to as well), is that I can be in Sydney, drive for 10 hours, be in Melbourne, but still be in Australia. Living in Singapore, I occasionally drive to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), a three-hour drive. Local friends will exclaim “Wha, so far!” Distance, as I have discovered, is relative. In Singapore, if I were to drive for 10 hours, I would have crossed two national borders, and be in a third country - Thailand (Singapore and Malaysia being the other two countries). This morning I had breakfast in Bangkok (Thailand), shopped and had lunch, got on a plane, and will be having dinner with family in Singapore three hours later. It still amazes me - being able to experience the best of a number of different nations, cuisines and people in different countries in the same 24 hour

Some do it with humour, others with creativity, and others with their kind and thoughtful natures. We all know more than a few of them so why not give them some recognition? The task: to award five (5) other bloggers, name the person who awarded me, link to them and the originator at Skittles Place, and detail what the award is about.
