Home Made Face Remedy 2007-10-06 10:54:03 When I was a teenager, I remember bugging mum about a face mask and asking repeated questions about what it was, why did women do it, etc. I remember thinking that it all seemed so glamourous (yes - despite the muck on your face, to girls at that age it did).
I bugged mum for ages to let me try one, but we had just moved into a brand new home that my parents had built, and I am sure money was tight, so mum put together a home-made toning face mask. It was really simple - egg white. That was all.
I remember being really disappointed - typical teenager.
Then we scooped the goop on our face, waited til it was dry and then washed it off.
My face was so soft! I wasn’t disappointed any more… I thought Mum was a genius!
I write about it as I still use this simple face mask - and it always reminds me of Mum!
I’ve added a few other natural remedies to the list:
Want really smooth skin? Scrub body (not face) in the shower with fresh coffee grinds - all over. Your skin will fe Read more:Home Made

Righting writes! 2007-10-20 02:50:00
This is a link-fest of sorts, however I have been following David McMahon’s series through each edition, and it’s been interesting. Telling Write from Wrong has covered a number of topics from finding agents, writing styles and approaches, as well as a lot of feedback from those that are discovering suffering through the writing process. I particularly liked the posts on inspiration and reflection.
There have been a few things that I have taken from not only David’s writing and reflection on this topic, but also the contribution of readers.
I would say my top three are:
Take Notes
Have a go and let the inspiration flow
Be aware of the impact of title
There is a lot that can and I am sure will be said on this topic, and we’ll see more as this section of David’s blog unfolds… but if you are into writing, even if it just for your blog, you should check out Telling Write from Wrong.

Captcha the spammers! 2007-10-19 01:30:15 Tammy emailed me today with the following news:
Hi!
I usually find lots of interesting links on your website, but today I have one for you…
http://recaptcha.net/learnmore.html
a freebie from Carnegie Mellon University…
What a great tool… you get to prevent spamming on your website, and we help them to digitise books (where the OCR hasn’t recognised the word properly).
Ciao from Sydney,
Tammy
I have had the problem of spammers
lately - over the past 3 days I have received 137 spam comments on my blog! I do have a spam utility that helps filter them, but I still have to go through them to confirm that there isn’t a post that has accidentally been flagged as spam (which happens once or twice a week).
I had noticed on Blogger that there is the option to get users to enter in random words - and I had always wanted something like that on my blog. Now there is this free tool!
What Tammy means when she says that “we help them to digitise books” is t Read more:Captcha
Microsoft - Convert Word 2007 docx format 2007-10-24 23:54:56 Microsoft are at it again.
If you have any version of Microsoft Office older than 2007, or use the free Office Software products (like OpenOffice), then you will be unable to open documents that are saved in the Office 2007 XML format
.
Fortunately, there is a converter that works effectively on Windows systems for Word Processing documents. Check out the Docx2RTF converter for converting docx files to rtf, which can then be opened in virtually any word processor. It will remove formatting, so if that is important, you may need to get the document originator to save the document as a “doc” file and resend it to you.
More information on the docx and other formats can be found on this Microsoft support page - Introduction to new file name extensions in Office 2007.

The Haka: Origins 2007-10-24 23:03:33 Yawning Bread Sampler is usually a controversial read in Singapore, and this dive into the history of the famous Haka (refer to the All Blacks - Rugby), is not without its scandal in stating that rugby can be homoerotic. This, however, is not the point of my reference to this link, as I found it quite an interesting read on the origins of The Haka, and found the closing statement an interesting perspective on this history:
And somehow, they’ve made that tale of hiding from one’s enemies into a battle cry for the national rugby team.

Healing Time 2007-10-24 00:27:39 Grandma and grandpa were watching a religious healing program on TV. The evangelist called to all who wanted to be healed,to put one hand on the TV and the other on the body part they wanted healed.
Grandma hobbled to the TV and put one hand on the TV and the other on her arthritic hip.
Grandpa made his way to the set and put one hand on the TV and the other on his crotch.
Grandma looked at him with disgust, and said “You just don’t understand, you old coot… The purpose of this program is to heal the sick, not raise the dead.”

Please say a prayer… 2007-10-23 03:41:03 Dad’s in hospital - routine (is it just me or do they say that a lot), but that doesn’t stop me from being worried.
He is supposed to be out by now, however the tyranny of distance is making me worry.
If you have any spare prayers, please lend one to my father.
I’ll make good on it when you need it back.

Faves this Week 2007-10-21 08:26:53 I have not been as busy on this site as late as I have been (a) busy with life - lots to do, and (b) I have been working on getting a couple of other sites established.
The two other sites that I author are completely unrelated, but I find them both quite satisfying.
Discovering OpenOffice, where I post questions that colleagues and clients ask about OpenOffice office productivity software and try and help them convert from Microsoft Office.
This week I had a particularly long post on performing a mail merge with Open Office, but for multiple purposes (ie. not for mailing letters). For example you might have invitations to send, username and password lists to mail out, etc.
Resting Nite, a photo appreciation blog, particularly of photos that are posted on Flickr. For those that visit this blog often, you will be familiar with my pro-Flickr position, and Flickr has a section on their site called ‘Interestingness’. This photo was posted from my new phone - a N73.
You might think, “gee this girl goes through mobile phones,” and you might be right, to an extent. You see, I lost the one that I got for my birthday.
The creepy thing is that I knew I would lose it… knew almost from the day that I got it.
I know it was just a phone, however it was the nicest phone that I had ever owned, and a birthday present from DH.
I didn’t mean to lose it… and now I have a not-as-good phone that I have to learn to use all over again.
*sigh*
Oh, well… things could be much worse, I know. Feel bad about losing the birthday present more than anything. If it was a toothbrush, I would feel just as bad.
DH has been walking around all day telling people that I throw birthday presents away, and I feel terrible.
Hope you had a better day.

Why parents drink 2007-10-26 07:02:21 A boss wondered why one of his most valued employees had not phoned in sick one day.
Having an urgent problem with one of the main computers, he dialled the employee’s home phone number and was greeted with a child’s whisper.
‘ Hello ? ‘
‘Is your daddy home?’ he asked.
‘ Yes ,’ whispered the small voice.
‘May I talk with him?’
The child whispered, ‘ No .’
Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, ‘Is your Mommy there?’
‘ Yes .’
‘May I talk with her?’
Again the small voice whispered , ‘ No .’
Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, ‘Is anybody else there?’
‘ Yes ,’ whispered the child, ‘ a policeman ‘.
Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee’s home, the boss asked,
‘May I speak with the policeman?’
‘ No, he’s busy ‘, whispered the
Hot Potato 2007-10-26 00:28:56 [read with an Australian accent]
Patrick, who was on holiday from Ireland on Bondi beach couldn’t seem to make it with any of the girls. So he asked the local lifeguard for some advice.
Mate, it’s obvious,” says the lifeguard, “you’re wearing them old baggy swimming trunks that make ya look like an old geezer They’re years outta style. Your best bet is to grab yourself a pair of Speedos - about two sizes too small and drop a fist-sized potato down inside ‘em. I’m tellin’ ya mate…you’ll have all the babes ya want!”
The following weekend, Patrick hits the beach with his spanking new tight Speedos, and his fist-sized potato. Everybody on the beach was disgusted as he walked by, covering their faces, turning away, and laughing, looking sick!
So Patrick went back to the lifeguard again and asked him, “What’s wrong now?”
JAHEESUS!” said the lifeguard, “Mate. The potato goes in front!” Read more:Potato
Crocodile tears for crocodile shoes 2007-10-25 18:53:20 A blonde was on vacation and driving through Darwin . She desperately wanted to take home a pair of genuine crocodile shoes
but was very reluctant to pay the high prices the local vendors were asking. After becoming very frustrated with the “no haggle on prices” attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the blonde shouted,
“Well then, maybe I’ll just go out and catch my own crocodile, so I can get a pair of shoes for free”
The shopkeeper said with a sly, knowing smile, “Little lady, just go and give it a try”!
The blonde headed out toward the river, determined to catch a crocodile!
Later in the day, as the shopkeeper is driving home, he pulls over to the side of the bank where he spots the same young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand.
Just then, he spots a huge 3 metre croc swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning speed, she takes aim, kills the creature and hauls it onto the slimy banks of the river.

Need a document? 2007-10-31 04:40:23 Well sometimes I just need a form, or a letter format, or some other such template where I can base what I want to do on something that has already been done as (a) I’m 99% sure that something has been done before, and (b) I need to save some time.
Fortunately, DocStoc understands this and they have a bunch of forms and document
s, created by individuals, ranging from topics such as real estate contracts and wills, to power of attorney, budget templates, project planning, organisational charts… the list goes on.
I found some of the newsletter formats quite interesting, but I really liked that they had document previews, tags and comments from community members.
Another really great online service community!

My Bike 2007-10-31 00:52:37 A priest was about to finish his tour of duty, and was leaving his Mission in the jungle where he has spent yearsteaching the natives when he realizes that the one thing he never taught them was how to speak English. So he takes the chief for a walk in the forest.
He points to a tree and says to the chief, “This is a tree.”
The chief looks at the tree and grunts, “Tree.”
The Priest is pleased with the response. They walk a little further and he points to a rock and says, “This is a rock.”
Hearing this, the chief looks and grunts, “Rock.”
The Priest was really getting enthusiastic about the results when he hears a rustling in the bushes. As they peek over
the top, he sees a couple of natives in the midst of heavy sexual activity.
The Priest is really flustered and quickly responds, “Man riding a bike.”
The chief looks at the couple briefly, pulls out his blowgun and kills them.
The Priest goes ballistic and yells at the chief
Getting Things Done (GTD): Remember the Milk 2007-10-30 03:07:34 I struggle with getting things done, and I struggle with to do lists - I find them overwhelming and not integrated with my life. I can’t carry around small bits of paper, or notepads… so I end up forgetting everything, including the milk. Some days I am lucky I remember my name, and today I found out that a friend of mine is having his second child and he told me months ago - the baby is due in 3 weeks.
I need to find something that is going to help me get on top of this mess and bird brain that I seem to have developed!
Now I’m trying ‘Remember
the Milk’ - an online to do list manager… with a big difference for me!
One of the really cool things that like is that it emails me daily about what is due today, and it will also message me via Skype or MSN. I like that it understands that if I say something is due in ‘3 days’, and will calculate that date automatically for me. Very cool.
I can also:
access it on my mobile phone

A Real Bad Outcome 2007-10-29 22:51:01 On my way home the other day…
I rear-ended a car last evening on the Freeway, on my way home the other day.
I tell you, I knew right then and there that there was going to be a REALLY bad outcome.
The driver got out of the other car, and wouldn’t you know it - He was a DWARF!!
He looked up at me and said “I am NOT Happy!”
So I said, “Well……which one of the seven ARE you then?”
And that’s how the fight started.

Read By Email - Daily Literature 2007-11-03 01:40:15 Back in August I posted about a site called Daily
Lit where you can read a book via email in installments. Well today I received the last installment of Jane Austin’s Emma, and I must say I found it a nice way to read a book.
I check email and the web via me mobile phone, so it was handy if I had a few spare minutes where I was otherwise unoccupied, I could turn it on and read a few pages, without having to have lugged around a book. (Not that I mind lugging around books - but sometimes you can’t!)
Now I’m trying to decide if I’ll read Sun Tzu’s Art of War, As You Like It of the Bill Shakespeare persuasion, or whether I’ll venture into another Jane Austin.

Where in Singapore: Can I Find Good Ice Chendol? 2007-11-11 21:13:07 For those that are after good Ice Chendol in Singapore
, go to Jin Jin Hot/Cold Dessert at ABC Brickworks Market Food Centre on Jalan Bukit Merah.
I found that the most satisfying Ice Chendol I had tasted to date was in Malacca (Malaysia), and anything else in Singapore just simple paled in comparison, however after trying this on Friday night, I was in Chendol heaven.
So for the uninitiated, what is ice chendol?
Chendol is a pile of shaved ice, one top of starch noodles with green food coloring (usually sourced from the pandan leaf) covered with coconut milk and liquid palm sugar. It usually has an atap seed in the bottom, and can also have red beans, corn and other additional condiments.
It sounds a little different for those of us with Western palate, however when confronted with a market dessert stall, with the various concoctions on ice, it is a delicious choice!

Remind Me - Often! 2007-11-10 07:31:49 I really have a bird brain when it comes to remembering almost anything. I have to say that the Remember The Milk to do list tool that I featured is working really, really well… and I’m starting to break my procrastination habit.
There are some things that require reminding on a regular basis. Birthdays are obvious ones, and so too are bill payments. One of the other useful tools is the free calendar that goes with Gmail, or the one with Yahoo… they both have a super feature, which is to email me reminders a specified period before the event date (be it 15 minutes or two weeks). They also allow multiple reminders (eg. 2 weeks before, then 10 days before - ‘coz sometimes I need to be nagged).
The other thing that I like is that you can set it to repeat - annually, weekly, monthly, every 3 months… very, very cool.
If you don’t have a calendar with your email, you can get one at http://calendar.google.com

Why I Don’t Move Back to Sydney 2007-11-08 20:40:19 Sydney is Breaking My Heart…
The key point highlighted above is Police recorded 4286 assaults in the whole council area of the City of Sydney in 2006 and almost half of them occurred either outdoors or in a public place.
I am not poo-poo’ing the Sydney police… I’m just wondering why it needs to happen in the first place. In my experience, it is largely due to alcohol and drugs. I’m really sorry to say this.
And then there’s Singapore’s campaign:

Blog from MSN 2007-11-16 01:40:28 Today I discovered imified.com - what an amazing idea!
You include an email address as a friend on your MSN, Google Talk or other such application, type anything in a chat session and are then presented with a menu from which you can customise applications and include everything including being able to blog from your MSN chat window - how cool is that???
Check out the screen shot - from MSN I can access a number of applications, including Twitter, my blog and remember the milk. I can add or retrieve information, depending on the application - so totally cool!
