Bruce Springsteen To Release Live CD/DVD From Seeger Sessions Band/Tour
2007-08-12 12:02:29
Recorded over three nights’ worth of shows last November with the Seeger Sessions Band, this will be released simultaneously by Sony on DVD (including Hi-Def Blu-Ray) as well as on a two-CD set audio set on June 5. What’s with all the Boss hating? The Seeger Sessions was his best album in years, and he’s the fucking Boss anyways. Listen to Incident 57th Street or the whole Born to Run album and tell me that Springsteen sucks…

Nine Inch Nails’ “Year Zero” disk holds a secret…….
2007-08-11 11:15:37
If you picked up the new album today, you opened it up to find a black CD. Put upon putting it in your computer and listening to it for a while, you’ll find the CD isn’t black anymore when you take it out&hellip ;… I popped the burned copy or Year Zero that I’ve been listening to since last week out of my car’s CD player, and popped in the new black NIN Cd. I listened to Hyperpower! and was amazed at how much better it sounded than the 256KBps version that was on my burn. I took the original out so I could put in the burned copy and compare the two only to see that the new disc was light tan in color now. As I looked at it, I noticed that the spot under my thumb had turned white. I shrieked like a delighted schoolgirl. That’s some cool ass shit

Warner Music CEO “fairly certain” his kids pirate music
2007-08-10 09:58:51
So what did Edgar Bronfman, CEO of Warner Music, have to say when questioned as to whether any of his seven kids pirate music? &ldquo ;I’m fairly certain that they have, and I’m fairly certain that they’ve suffered the consequences.&rdquo ; Funny, we haven’t heard about any inter-familial lawsuits involving Bronfman sr. v. Bronfman jr. - - MORE RIAA craziness! ” … … when questioned as to whether any of his seven kids pirate music” WTF? Seven kids? Looks like piracy is not his only concern - he has other issues.

Eddie Van Halen confirms asking David Lee Roth to rejoin Van Halen
2007-08-09 09:17:59
Guitar legend Eddie Van Halen is saying that former Van Halen singer David Lee Roth has definitely been asked to rejoin the group, and that they are awaiting his decision. Not to resurrect more memories from this era but I believe mr. Roth should be a little “Once Bitten Twice Shy” about rejoining the band. I think I just dugg myself down.

A Plea for Piracy
2007-08-08 08:02:17
[.pdf file]. The subtitle to this article is: “When copyright owners stop selling older works, maybe pirates deserve some legal cover.” Interesting read. Nice read. It’d be great for music that’s now out of print. I had Mike Doughty’s Smofe + Smang CD a few years back. It was swiped from my car, along with a few other CD’s. I would have gladly re-bought the CD, but now it’s out of print. Normally I’d be out of luck, but through the magic of Bit Torrent, I can now listen to these gems by the ex-Soul Coughing front man.

The 6 Year-Old Singing Sensation Simon Cowell Will Make a Millionaire
2007-08-07 07:21:11
// The same girl you saw in Digg’s video section, if you’re wondering. //She’s never had a formal singing lesson. Instead, she has had to hone her skills on a ??39.99 karaoke machine. But Connie Talbot, the six-year-old star of ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent, is already being hailed as the “next Charlotte Church”. She is one of the 3 really great singers in this show 1. Her 2. Another little girl who sang a song from “my fair lady” 3. a mobile phone salesman who sings opera (and had crappy sound quality tonight but still got through.)

Prince’s CD giveaway another nail in the album’s coffin
2007-08-07 04:06:46
A UK newspaper gave away nearly 2.8 million copies of Prince ’s upcoming album Planet Earth last weekend. Music industry figures aren’t too happy about the latest sign of the album’s shaky future. The quote about Prince not supporting record stores is total bullshit. Clinging to the belief that record stores will still be relevant in 5 years is just one more symptom of the problems plaguing the record industry. Evolve or die.

Elect NIN song as theme for the Clinton campaign
2007-08-06 16:26:13
Whether or not you like Hillary Clinton , she’s the only candidate out there who’s taking a poll to see what their official campaign theme song should be, and you can write in a song. Vote Trent Reznor 2008! Ok I went and put in appx 150 votes for “Capital G” by NIN. Mind you i’m at work. When I get home lemme sit down and write a little script, and let it run all night.

Music Business Model Gets its own 2.0
2007-08-15 15:16:54
SellaBand.com — By deferring the cost and talent of scouting to a crowd of music lovers, SellaBand puts powerful marketing and production tools into the hands of those with a personal interest in the music. It ??s one of several examples of crowdfunding — and it could change how the music business is organized. I really hope this succeeds. But if it does, some BMG/UMG/RIAA-esque organization will just buy it out. The real question, is that can an investment based on pure opinion, not numbers, yield a return?

Hip-hop exec Russell Simmons battles to ban ‘extreme curse’ words
2007-08-14 14:03:07
Worth reading simply for CNN’s disclaimer at the top: “Editor’s note: The following story contains words that may be considered offensive. Reader discretion is advised.” I was going to comment about how tired I am of older people criticizing the trends of the younger generation, but meh..it’s just continuing the cycle. bury me.

Mick Taylor: The Stone who rolled away…
2007-08-13 13:17:18
When the Rolling Stone s were revealed last week to be music’s biggest current earners, making $$77million a year, one man who played a key part in their success could be forgiven for not joining in any celebrations. Mick Taylor , guitarist on some of the Stones’ best albums, now has a lifestyle far removed from the excesses of the rock circuit&hellip ; mick taylor was a genius with the stones, but if you’ve ever heard his recordings with John Mayall (from before and after his 5 year RS stint), they are equally phenomenal.

Survivalism (Nine Inch Nails) is #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart
2007-08-19 19:14:07
This is NIN’s fourth consecutive number one single. I can’t wait to get this for two reasons. One, because I downloaded it and it is amazing. Two, because I saw a picture of the cd before and after ripping it in the computer. I want to see if the cover really is heat sensitive and changes when you rip it. If so, that is the coolest thing I have ever seen. If not, the person that posted those pics is a douche.

Beatles music to be public domain, UK copyright stays at 50
2007-08-18 18:26:22
The UK will not extend the copyright period on sound recordings. The decision means that the earliest official recordings from The Beatles will be out of copyright in 2013. If I’m not mistaken a similar thing happen to Mickey Mouse a few years back. Disney sent their people to Washington to lobby congress to extend the copyright law or make an exception since Mickey was about to go into the public domain . In this case, however, (and with the help of several million campaign dollars) congress folded and made a law–that Clinton signed– that in affect deferred the public domain of Mickey Mouse and let Disney continue to make money off him for a little while longer. (do a search for “Copyright Term Extension Act”). The irony here, of course, is that were it not for stories already in the public domain at the time Walt got started, there may never have been an opportunity for Mickey Mouse (or Pluto or Donald Duck) to come to public consciousness.

“The Who” doesn’t believe in the Internet
2007-08-17 17:12:33
Call them old fashioned, but the founding members of The Who don’t think the Internet is the future of rock, are unhappy about radio’s narrow musical focus, and convinced live music is what it is all about. I usually lose interest in seeing bands if I have to go to a huge arena and see them. If I catch them while they are still in the clubs that’s cool otherwise I just listen to the records if I like a band that is that popular.

Hip Hop Isn’t Dying, It Just Sucks
2007-08-16 16:01:41
Hip hop sales are down. But why? Countless articles have said the problems with hip hop stem solely from its content. Not true. Hip hop first and foremost is a musical art-form. Right now, hip hop just isn ??t living up to musical standards. It??s just plain bad. Corquetsz You’re a moron who doesnt know shit about Metal history if you try to deny that a7x’s style isnt directly derived from Old Skool Metal. Yes they’re comercialized, yes they have softer music, but that doesnt change the absolute fact that most of their guitar parts are rooted in metal.

Beatnik Turtle Creates Song in Memory of Joe Murphy
2007-08-23 22:14:25
Af you know, beloved podcast personality Joe Murphy , aka Mason Rocket (from SliceofSciFi, Kick-Ass Mistic Ninjas and other shows) passed away from cancer last Sunday. Beatnik Turtle has dedicated today’s free song to his memory: “Mason Rocket (Spy Extraodrinaire)”. Please share it with your friends! I thought was really cool. I played it today in podcast since I wanted to talk about Joe anyway. Not the happiest podcast ever for obvious reasons. I just think it so cool that so many people went out of their way to show Joe so much love. If you got to go early, thats the way to go. Surrounded by friends and love.

Musicovery - Music Genre Visualization Tool [MUST TRY]
2007-08-22 22:01:37
To start the radio (iPod alike), click somewhere in the matrix: clam/energetic and dark/positive. To get a radio for “Dance”: the more on the right you click, the more the music is suitable for dancing. You can also choose which years you would like to hear the music from. I’ve just been playing with it a little and I’ve been linked all over the show through their “networky” interface from Korn to NIN, Cher and Paul Simon, Underworld and The Chemical Brothers. Cool interface, especially when I noticed that you can pick the moods by musical category as well (thought it was a bug at first caused by using Flash on Firefox 3 (nightly nicknamed “Minefield”). Looking at a series of songs that goes from Faith No More (Evidence, I Started a Joke, Ashes to Ashes) to Aerosmith, Metallica, Silverchair (?!), Faith No More, Rage Against the Machine, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and even Marilyn Manson, etc… Bookmarked, Dugg, and setup as my default radio

Last.fm Stream Ripper; The Last Ripper
2007-08-21 21:17:45
Freeware app TheLastStream saves and parses Last.fm streams into MP3s. But that’s not all! It also automatically downloads album art, assigns ID3 tags, creates playlists, and organizes recordings according to artist, album, and track.TheLastStream requires that you have a Last.fm account and the Last.fm client. Both free. (Windows, Mac, Linux) Very nice work… Though I recall a Pandora ripper that just about accomplished the same thing–however for some odd reason it stopped working almost a week after it launched, I think Pandora caught on and did something about it.

Songs About Killings Live On, Not Just In Raps
2007-08-20 20:01:00
Behold the classic murder ballad. It’s a song form about the most gruesome of events, told in a light, sometimes even pretty way, so that it might take a several listens to recognize the bloody gore oozing underneath an otherwise benign melody. The murder ballad has been around for centuries and continues forward as a part of popular culture. Let’s take a look at some of the lyrics posted above and some of the lyrics from a rap… One is poetic, one is violent and full of hate. Now I am not saying all rap is full of hate. There are plenty of performers that rap and are quite poetic. However, most of the thugs that rap about murder throw the poetry out the window. It is my impression that the person who started this thread wanted a discussion regarding murder lyrics and rap music.

Why New Music Doesn’t Sound As Good As It Did
2007-08-28 01:10:43
Never mind that today’s factory-produced starlets and mini-clones just don’t have the practiced chops of the supergroups of yesteryear, pop in a new CD and you might notice that the quality of the music itself??maybe something as simple as a snare drum hit??just doesn’t sound as crisp and as clear as you’re used to. Why is that? Meh. The comments on the actual story are going on about the actual peak and actual volume levels. Sure, newer stuff goes right up to 11–that’s what you should do with digital if you want to capture the full range. The thing that sucks is that so many people throw out the advantage of getting the full range by compressing the living hell out of the audio. In my own playlist, compare anything from King Crimson’s Lark’s Tounges in Aspic to Opeth’s Blackwater Park. The latter has music that *should* be louder and *should* be softer, but really isn’t, not noticeably. The former, though, well, the fir

Who is YsabellaBrave? A 2nd lonelygirl15, or merely a young talented woman?
2007-08-26 23:58:54
You’ve seen the digg link to her page - it’s been dugg over 2800 times. On her profile at YouTube.com there are photos of a twenty-something woman with a full mouth, dark eyes, and in thumbnails from her videos, ever-changing hair. But the question is - who is she? Is she an act, like lonelygirl15 last year, or an original, shooting to fame? It seems a little weird to me that her homepagerefers to her in the third person: “To contact MaryAnne, please Subscribe and add a comment to a video by clicking above during or after play. No DRM Could Mean Cheaper Music
2007-08-26 00:17:42
Even if Steve Jobs’ essay last week — in which the Apple chief questioned the wisdom of continuing to sell music wrapped in digital rights management — was a negotiating tactic designed to give Apple an advantage during impending license renewal negotiations, as some have suggested, Jobs’ proposal is still spurring lots of discussion. Why don’t you just pirate it for $0? Why pay a middle man to do the piracy for you? Because it s convenient. Allofmp3 is almost as easy as iTunes, and it has gotten a bit of publicity so many people are now aware of it. I used to use Hotline and that was such a pain in the rump, so many hoops to jump through to get some craked sw that often didnt even work. Now that I am employed and using that software, one by one I have gone and purchased legit copies of it all. But for most users, the hassle it is to get bootleg shit is worth paying a nominal fee for the ease of use. As far as my use of Allofmp3 goes, I refill my catalog w

Spice Girls plan to go to Baghdad, Iraq
2007-08-31 04:02:11
They have given their fans the chance to vote for where they would play next on their world tour. And now a massive internet campaign could mean the Spice Girls end up performing… in war-torn Iraq . They’ll never play Baghdad . But it would be smart of their publicist to say its possible just to get the media to talk about them and the “massive internet campaign” that is actually a joke. but it could be twisted in their favor.

Cingular offers free music
2007-08-30 03:12:24
Music on one’s mobile phone is nothing surprising. Downloading it for free is a different matter; both Verizon and Sprint’s service directs to a proprietary store and charges up to $2.50 per song. Cingular plans on another route: they are gearing up to offer free music downloads to compatible phones. $15 a month gets you access to Janus DRM WMA files. I don’t care what anyone says… Janus is a good thing… unless exploited (Thanks Fairuse4WM+Yahoo Unlimited)

RIAA: CDs Don’t Cost Nearly Enough
2007-08-29 02:00:34
The cost of a CD should be exponentially higher, according to the RIAA. maybe if the content of cd’s were better they could charge more. The demand is not there for 1 or 2 songs sold at $12. I believe that is why Itunes is making a killing, you don’t have to buy all the filler. When cd’s came out they were $15-20 (if my memory serves me correctly) and vinyl could be found for $8.

New Copyright Laws Will Make Singing Out Loud a Crime
2007-09-23 01:52:09
The Internet Industry Association today warned that changes to Australia ??s copyright laws being rushed through Parliament risked making criminals out of everyday Australians. An interesting take on the issue of intellectual property. I guess we’re well on our way to using sign-language as “the” means of communication just so long as someone doesn’t come up with a way to copyright the use of the hands in communication. BTW, who’s take credit for the middle finger? This is just silly.

Everything from a touch screen guitar to the obligatory gun-guitar. I call shenangians on the Kaoss guitar, the lead singer of Muse Matthew Bellamy uses one (their last album, black holes and revelations is awesome btw), if you want to spend the dough, you can get it custom made from any number of guitar manufacturers. Matt was using one on the last tour.

Big labels are f*cked, and DRM is dead
2007-09-20 23:52:30
Few people know the music industry better than Peter Jenner. Pink Floyd’s first manager. Jenner has also looked after T.Rex, The Clash, Ian Dury, Disposable Heroes and Billy Bragg - who he manages today. He’s also secretary general of the International Music Managers Forum. And he doesn’t pull his punches. I dugg this because PF was my favorite band and the perspective is interesting. HOWEVER, Mr. Jenner advocates a socialist solution, sort of a “tax” that everyone pays to fund artists. THAT SUCKS. I believe in free market solutions to these problems, and while I am no big fan of DRM I don’t find teh itunes store to be a bad option. If they offered a free/ultra cheap streaming service so you could “explore” for new music that would be an enhancement, I think that’s a better idea than making a music a “protected class” of commerce that gets its wages from what amounts to taxation.

40 yrs ago today: With ‘Sgt. Pepper,’ the Beatles changed rock forever
2007-09-19 22:52:44
When “Sgt. Pepper ” appeared, it was as if a massive block party had appeared outside your window. And it wasn’t just the music. The album cover itself was breathtaking… I’m not a huge Beatles fan but my first experience to this album came in 10th grade from an english teacher. It was for a poetry part of the class. since that day i have worn out 2 discs and on my third of Sgt Peppers. It may not be the best Beatles album but it is my favorite for its commentary.
