Live Review: Rosie Oddie at 93 Feet East 2007-08-09 19:15:14 Gigs on Air is coming to the end of their residency at 93 Feet East, but as one of their closing gigs at the Brick Lane venue they put on an eclectic mix of artists, the highlight of which was undoubtedly Rosie
Oddie and the Odd Squad.
After a rather abysmal opener in the shape of “Wrong Animal” (who decided to berate the crowd, and show off their lead singer’s ignorance both within the 20 minutes that I saw of their set), Rosie quietly shifted onto stage at 9:45. The 22 year old shifted through her already impressive back catalogue, showing off her reputation as a Kate Nash for those a bit more left of mainstream, liking something a bit edgier.
Rosie’s famous bird watching father was absent from the proceedings, though it does look like her backing band, The Odd Squad, has had some members picked by Bill himself – a noticeable age gap between the guitarist and the rest of the band, however was clearly picked for his skills.
The crowd was an interesting mix of young and old,
Calvin Harris wants you to trash your home 2007-08-08 13:26:07 Calvin Harris
has been having fun with the press. He’s been running a competition to have him DJ at a house party in the future (details here), however the press have taken it completely the wrong way, slating him as irresponsible. Recently he posted a myspace bulletin:
GMTV wanted me to go on this morning to answer various probing mumsy questions but the label thought it would be a bad idea as i would be unable to cope with Ben Shepard’s tough line of questioning, which is a shame as that would have been a life ambition fufilled.
Anyway, they want me to do a video blog explaining how to ‘party responsibly’ in a most patronising tone, because apparently you don’t know that its a REALLY stupid idea to invite people you don’t know into your house for a party because i can GUARANTEE they will be pissing on your sofas and shitting in your cupboards within 5 minutes.
This just goes to show how alarmist some sections of our press can be (I’m looking Read more:Calvin

Bikini Black Special: Demo Review 2007-08-15 17:28:33 A couple of months ago I featured BikiniBlackSpecial
as a “band to watch in the future”, after I was involved in the judging of the Road To V bands through Virtual Festivals. Now they’ve sent me their first demo CD, which sounds exceptionally professional for a debut effort.
A mix between the urgency of Arctic Monkeys, early Razorlight (before they got shite) and the tales of Hard-Fi, BBS are never going to win innovation and originality awards. However what they lack in originality they more than make up with in style, talent and sheer songs.
Opening with “Easy, Faster” the lads have a fine opening track, combining northern grit with a fine tune, bemoaning how “you’ve got it so easy”. Quickly builds into an unstoppable juggernaut, before plunging straight into the second track, “Cuffs + Kisses“.
Vocalist Stevo sounds like a mixture of Arctics’ Alex Turner and The Enemy’s Tom, channelling his bitterness and anger into the track – calls of “the same
Mumm-Ra October Tour CANCELLED 2007-08-20 17:44:28 No sooner than Mumm-Ra have announced an October
tour than they go and cancel it.
In a statement on their mySpace they say:
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have decided to cancel our October tour.
Now this isn’t because we are splitting up or anything like that. We just feel that the extra 3 weeks we would have by not doing it will give us extra time to focus on writing the second album. We don’t want to be on of these bands who take 2-3 years to release their next album. That just isn’t us. We want a quick turn around. We want to spend the winter months of 07 in hibernation writing and demoing songs. Record the album in the first few months of 08 and be back on our stereos with some new tunes by the start of summer.
We will still be doing the gig in Bexhill on the 31st, and also the gig in Romford on 29th Sept. And possibly a date in london as well.
Conspiracy theorists go wild on this one…
