Bands to keep a watch out for in the future: #12: The Sunshine Underground
2007-08-12 06:40:51
In these times of “nu-rave” and mass-marketed hype machines (yes, Kate Nash I’m looking at you), its nice to see a band such as The Sunshine Underground who are doing things on their own terms. Mixing styles between Klaxons, Switches and umpteen other indie/dance bands of the last five years, this band will instantly sound at home whilst distinctly fresh. Hailing from Leeds, the band specialise in trippy tracks that are the perfect wake up to any cold winter morning - you’ll be up and out of bed quicker than you would know with them on in the background. Their debut self titled album is one of the few albums of this year that is consistently good throughout - whilst there are stand out tracks, the whole collection is very rewarding to listen in one go. Heralded by some bloggers as “the sound of 2007″, they’ve sold out dates in their hometown of Leeds and London, and toured with Pigeon Detectives, Happy Mondays and Idlewild. The Sunshine Undergr

Athlete / Tiscali Showcase
2007-08-10 14:46:25
Next week’s Tiscali Showcase at Soho Revue Bar will be headlined by Athlete , with support coming from fast, angular Parka and Eugene McGuinness who sounds distinctly like a distinctly wacky Air Traffic, or a slowed down stoned Architecture In Helsinki. Mum to play special London gig
2007-08-10 03:18:41
Those electro-ambient geniuses Mum have announced a special one off show at London’s Museum of Garden History on August 29th. This special gig needs you to register on their website to be entered into a draw to be able to buy tickets. Winners will be drawn on Monday 13th (next Monday), and winners will be able to buy tickets immediately. The band are returning with a new album on 24th September, which going by their previous 7 albums should be pretty immense. I’ve registered, and hopefully will catch you there! Live Review: Rosie Oddie at 93 Feet East
2007-08-09 19:15:14
Gigs on Air is coming to the end of their residency at 93 Feet East, but as one of their closing gigs at the Brick Lane venue they put on an eclectic mix of artists, the highlight of which was undoubtedly Rosie Oddie and the Odd Squad. After a rather abysmal opener in the shape of “Wrong Animal” (who decided to berate the crowd, and show off their lead singer’s ignorance both within the 20 minutes that I saw of their set), Rosie quietly shifted onto stage at 9:45. The 22 year old shifted through her already impressive back catalogue, showing off her reputation as a Kate Nash for those a bit more left of mainstream, liking something a bit edgier. Rosie’s famous bird watching father was absent from the proceedings, though it does look like her backing band, The Odd Squad, has had some members picked by Bill himself – a noticeable age gap between the guitarist and the rest of the band, however was clearly picked for his skills. The crowd was an interesting mix of young and old,

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly for Reading + Leeds Warm up
2007-08-08 13:48:04
The legend that is Sam Duckworth, otherwise known as Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. has announced a one off show playing the Coal Exchange, Cardiff. The political baladeer will play there on Thursday 23rd August, as a warm up for Reading and Leeds festivals that weekend. Tickets are on sale now from here at £12.50 each. No doubt he’ll take the intimate setting as a chance to try out some new material, which will hopefully be well received. He’ll be supported as ever by his backing band of Mike Glenister on Cornet, Andy Theakstone on Drums and Gavin Fitzjohn on Trumpet and Sax. Calvin Harris wants you to trash your home
2007-08-08 13:26:07
Calvin Harris has been having fun with the press. He’s been running a competition to have him DJ at a house party in the future (details here), however the press have taken it completely the wrong way, slating him as irresponsible. Recently he posted a myspace bulletin: GMTV wanted me to go on this morning to answer various probing mumsy questions but the label thought it would be a bad idea as i would be unable to cope with Ben Shepard’s tough line of questioning, which is a shame as that would have been a life ambition fufilled. Anyway, they want me to do a video blog explaining how to ‘party responsibly’ in a most patronising tone, because apparently you don’t know that its a REALLY stupid idea to invite people you don’t know into your house for a party because i can GUARANTEE they will be pissing on your sofas and shitting in your cupboards within 5 minutes. This just goes to show how alarmist some sections of our press can be (I’m looking

Currently riding high at number 2 in the album charts, Amy McDonald is set to become one of the CDs of choice for middle aged couples hosting dinner parties in 2007. Kanye West for secret London show
2007-08-13 11:39:18
Kanye West has announced that he’ll be playing a special secret show in London next Monday, 20th August. It’s a part of Vodafone’s TBA gig series, and to win tickets you’ll need to enter one of two draws: today (Monday 13th) or tomorrow (Tuesday 14th). Winners will be selected at random (though hopefully not BBC random where the winners are decided months before) If you don’t win tickets, coverage will be available on Vodafone Live! and also on Channel 4 in the near future. That is of course if you even like Kanye West. I’m not his biggest fan, thus the rather parred down article he’s got! Photo was taken from the_ml’s flickr stream under the creative commons license. Bikini Black Special: Demo Review
2007-08-15 17:28:33
A couple of months ago I featured Bikini Black Special as a “band to watch in the future”, after I was involved in the judging of the Road To V bands through Virtual Festivals. Now they’ve sent me their first demo CD, which sounds exceptionally professional for a debut effort. A mix between the urgency of Arctic Monkeys, early Razorlight (before they got shite) and the tales of Hard-Fi, BBS are never going to win innovation and originality awards. However what they lack in originality they more than make up with in style, talent and sheer songs. Opening with “Easy, Faster” the lads have a fine opening track, combining northern grit with a fine tune, bemoaning how “you’ve got it so easy”. Quickly builds into an unstoppable juggernaut, before plunging straight into the second track, “Cuffs + Kisses“. Vocalist Stevo sounds like a mixture of Arctics’ Alex Turner and The Enemy’s Tom, channelling his bitterness and anger into the track – calls of “the same

Mumm-Ra October Tour CANCELLED
2007-08-20 17:44:28
No sooner than Mumm-Ra have announced an October tour than they go and cancel it. In a statement on their mySpace they say: Ladies and Gentlemen, we have decided to cancel our October tour. Now this isn’t because we are splitting up or anything like that. We just feel that the extra 3 weeks we would have by not doing it will give us extra time to focus on writing the second album. We don’t want to be on of these bands who take 2-3 years to release their next album. That just isn’t us. We want a quick turn around. We want to spend the winter months of 07 in hibernation writing and demoing songs. Record the album in the first few months of 08 and be back on our stereos with some new tunes by the start of summer. We will still be doing the gig in Bexhill on the 31st, and also the gig in Romford on 29th Sept. And possibly a date in london as well. Conspiracy theorists go wild on this one… Photo taken from tallkev’s flickr stream under the Creative Commons Lic

Bands to keep a watch out for in the future: #14: Talk in Code
2007-08-20 14:30:39
Few bands sound as polished on their debut demos as Talk in Code. Sounding like an amped up Keane after a night on the lash with the Chili Peppers (could Tom Chaplin manage that without a rehab trip? We’ll leave that to your imagination…), their demo CD may be only three tracks long, but they manage to fit in all of their strengths (and a few weaknesses as well for good measure). Opener “Dry Emotion” starts off fast paced, and keeps it going throughout, though the last minute could probably have been done away with, as they loop around again… but that could just be me… “First Mistake” would have passed for an early U2 demo… professional and polished, stadium bound, yet missing that magical something you can’t quite put your finger on. Lyrically they’re one step up from emo teenagers in their room, but still one step down from the abstract story-telling of U2… lyrics such as “Don’t say it all again / I came back from way back when / I’ve made the first mist
