HealthPia's GlucoPhone gets FDA approval
2007-08-11 16:51:00
While the idea of a diabetes phone is far from new, a company dubbed HealthPia is well on its way to actually delivering such a product. Reportedly, the firm has 'obtained FDA approval for its patent-pending technology that integrates a blood glucose meter with a standard-issue cellphone.' Interestingly, it not only allows you to send results over the air, but specially equipped mobiles will actually be fitted with a GlucoPack that enables you to test yourself as you would with any other (more traditional) meter. During last week's AADE conference, the company supposedly announced that Verizon's LG5200 would be the first to sport such technology, and for those who think this could make their lives a whole lot easier, grab your specs and hit the read link for more.(Via Engadget.)

Samsung U740 Marches On To Canadian Turf
2007-08-11 16:44:00
When I first read about the Samsung U740, it seemed like a fantasy phone that really dressed to kill. It’s not until I got the feel of how it actually feels to own a double folding cellphone. EVDO high-speed data speeds make this one a favorite for those with the need for speed. There’s also an incredibly impressive media player and a microSC card slot so that you can happily store all the songs you need to keep you humming all day. The 1.3 megapixel camera is strictly okay. Other features bundled up in this include Bluetooth, internet browser, two color displays (wow!) and of course, a Double-Flip design."(Via Gizmodude.com.)

Nokia N95 to be 3G Capable in the U.S. by September
2007-08-10 19:51:00
Gigaom is reporting a recent development in Nokia ’s Nseries flagship phone. The N95 has been plugging along in 2.5G hell since its release in the U.S. Now, it appears Nokia has found a way to support the N95’s 3G capabilities at least. Not much more information is available but the announcement is supposed to be next month. Now, there are rumors that T-Mobile could be the carier that can solve the N95’s 3G problems, partly with the 2100Mhz UMTS spectrum that the N95 needs with T-Mobile’s sights, or so we thought. We’ll keep you posted if we’ve got some more infos.(Via Cell Phones etc..)

Lenovo serves up ThinkPad-inspired phone for China
2007-08-10 19:49:00
We hear nary a peep out of Lenovo 's handset division in these parts -- but in China , they do a fairly brisk business, offering the full range from commodity candybars all the way up through Windows Mobile-based powerhouses. You'd think, then, that if the company chose to grace a phone with its treasured ThinkPad branding, it would be one of those higher end pieces, yeah? Apparently not. This here P768 is the first Lenovo we've seen to evoke the storied laptop marque, lacking any sort of smartphone operating system (as far as we can tell) but offering up a metallic shell, 2 megapixel cam, 64MB of storage with microSD expansion, and an FM radio with a thumbstick that looks vaguely like a real ThinkPad's track stick. Grab it in Lenovo's domestic market for 999 yuan, or about $132 -- a far cry from even the cheapest Lenovo lappie, we reckon.(Via Engadget CELLS.)

Ford's Sync phone / DAP integration gets priced at $395
2007-08-10 19:48:00
Looks like Ford's pricing the Sync extensible automotive media platform right in line with most other DAP / Bluetooth integration solutions: Dearborn announced today that the system will be a $395 option on new Focus, Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles starting this fall. Ford also said that Sync will be coming to nine other vehicles by 2008, but honestly, we're not going to be satisfied on the carputer tip until we get Turbo Boost and a sweeping red scanner light.(Via Engadget CELLS.)

Sprint, Verizon both announce Motorola RAZR 2 V9m
2007-08-10 19:39:00
Neither carrier has launched it just yet, but yes -- the RAZR 2 V9m has now officially found a home on both Sprint and Verizon , with both promising availability in the next few weeks. To split hairs, Sprint will be beating its sworn enemy by a few days, launching its variant on August 22, while Verizon's just promising 'September' at this point. Unless AT&T manages to pull a rabbit out of its hat, it looks like the two will be the first in the US to launch what Motorola hopes will be the centerpiece of a turnaround for its flagging handset business. Thanks to EV-DO, attractive styling (yes, we realize we'll be really tired of it in a couple years, but it's still hot for now), and a gargantuan external display with touch controls, the phone is being positioned on the higher end of both carriers' dumbphone offerings -- and the price reflects it. Look for it for $300 with a $50 rebate on Verizon, $250 on Sprint, both on a two-year agreement.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]Updat

Haptic Phone Design Has Physical Buttons Occasionally
2007-08-08 19:48:00
The iPhone may have a dynamic UI that changes to suit whatever program's currently running, but it doesn't physically change. This All in One haptics phone designed by Lukas Koh does (on paper), and creates raised buttons depending on what mode you're currently in. Example: phone mode has the dial pad, and text entry mode presumably has a keyboard. Looks great, but impossible to make. [Yanko Design](Via Gizmodo: Cellphones.)

Nokia announces a recall of 46 million batteries
2007-08-14 13:36:00
Nokia has announced a product advisory for the Nokia branded BL-5C battery. The battery was made by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 through November 2006. It could potentially cause overheating due to a short circuit while charging that will cause the battery to dislodge.Nokia estimates that more than 300 million of the BL-5C batteries have been made from various suppliers, however the recall applies ‘only to the 46 million’ batteries made by Matsushita. So far there have been about 100 reports worldwide of the battery actually overheating. I suppose 100 out of 46 million is not that bad, but if you have this battery you can request a replacement from Nokia. You can head over to www.nokia.com/batteryreplacement to check your battery identification number.(Via Gadgetell.)
