CODE NAME: CLOVERFIELD
2008-02-05 11:18:59
Review by Scott EssmanTen years ago this summer, the can’t miss team of director Roland Emmerich and writer-producer Dean Devlin released their gargantuan feature film updating of GODZILLA, featuring a mostly computer-generated beast rampaging around and trashing most of New York City. That film, unlike the previous incarnation of GODZILLAs that came before it, failed to ignite genre audiences and left most viewers feeling as though a huge opportunity had been lost. Now, nearly seven years after a real massive tragedy befell New York during the events of September 11, the filmmaking team of producer JJ Abrams and director Matt Reeves have presented an update on Emmerich’s update, if you will, a revised GODZILLA tale for the handicam age, told exclusively through the point-of-view of a

JUNO Rising
2008-01-07 16:12:27
By Scott Essman With a host of fresh young faces and a smattering of adult veterans, JUNO () is a likable freshly-told comedy-drama along the lines of last year's ROCKET SCIENCE, plus indie faves such as LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, ELECTION, RUSHMORE and most of Wes Anderson's other films, all of which cast a subtly sardonic eye on American life in this new century.Though the basic premise of a pregnant teen who wishes to give up her child could have been taken in many directions, the filmmakers wisely kept most of the scenario in the middle of the road, allowing the actors and dialogue to do much of the work of making the film an audience-pleasing experience. At the top of the heap is Ellen Page () as the titular 16-year-old Juno, a wisecracking outcast who has most of the
