Teen Programs for Girls
2007-11-14 09:02:49
The teen programs for girls offered by Rockbrook bring together several unique aspects. First of all there are all the amazing things teen girls can do at camp… everythng from outdoor adventure trips like climbing and kayaking, to arts and crafts like pottery and weaving, to sports like soccer, basketball and volleyball. There’s plenty to keep your activity level way, way up. Then there are special leadership opportunities at camp, the chances to plan special events like the banquet and to help with activities for the younger kids. It’s very clear how teenagers are role models for the other girls at camp. Finally, the teen programs at Rockbrook provide a place were girls can relax and enjoy carefree summer living with some good friends who appreciate you for who you are instead of who you’re pretending to be. It’s welcoming and friendly, and that’s really great.

Girl Summer Camps
2007-11-12 13:47:04
We thought you’d enjoy seeing how girl summer camps like Rockbrook can be just as beautiful in the fall as in the summer. When the weather turns colder here in the mountains, the lush green of the camp forest comes alive with color, as the leaves change, fall, and decorate the camp in spectacular ways. For example, we took this photo of “Curosty,” one of the camp’s craft activity cabins the other day. Isn’t it amazing!? All those big, old Maples, Oaks and Poplars really serve up something special.

Camp Map NC

Here’s a map that Sarah drew of the camp back in 1992. While certainly “not to scale,” it shows the main part of camp, the Rockbrook buildings and cabin areas. There are a couple of important new things not shown on the map, too. Can you name them? What’s missing?P.S. Here’s a link where you can see a satellite view map of the camp!

Here’s a set of photos taken one day last summer during our equestrian program. It was a particularly nice day, so we took quite a lot .

Camp Arts and Crafts: Leather Working
2007-11-23 14:54:27
Working with leather is another of the many arts and crafts activities at Rockbrook Camp. Most popular this past year was making strap bracelets decorated with different patterns. You make the patterns by using a hammer to stamp metal shapes into the leather strap. There are also letters, so you can spell your name or something else as well. It’s always fun to see what you can make, and then to bring it home after camp.

Fun Summer Sleepaway Camps
2007-11-21 22:46:25
When you go to a summer sleepaway camp, you’ll have some crazy fun. Here’s a great example of a camp game that’s popular at Rockbrook… a Shaving Cream Fight! The rules are pretty simple. Armed and ready with a can of shaving cream and dressed in your bathing suit, you run around and try to coat everyone else in shaving cream without getting too coated yourself. Of course, it’s pretty hard to avoid getting sprayed, but that’s the fun of it! And soon everyone is white and having a grand time making goofy hair styles and designs. A quick rinse with the water hose followed by a dip in the lake, and you’re much cleaner than when you started. Sleepaway Camp silly summertime fun.

Teen Camp
2007-11-28 17:00:23
“I remember the week of outdoor adventure that grew into the group we warmly called the Extreme Mountain Women and the slightly less well known Kraft Krew. We did everything from kayaking the upper Green River (water fall and all) bushwacking and hiking on several extensive hikes, climbing, mountian biking and other various mountain loving sports. It is without doubt I say that the friendships formed and the things I learned about myself during that week rest firm beneath my feet as one of the strongest stones in the foundation of who I am today. Thank you. I wish every child had the chance to blossom in a place like Rockbrook. To this day I find it hard to get through “Rockbrook Camp Forever” without my heart overflowing with love and gratitude for that magical place in the woods. So I thank you.” — a Rockbrook alumna, 1989-1999.

Equestrian Programs

Here’s a cool image from our equestrian programs at camp, not a photograph exactly, but a colorized sketch made from a photo. There’s a new website called befunky.com where you can upload a picture and turn it into something like this. It’s not available to the public just yet, but we were able to try it out and now love the results. Squint a little, and you can almost feel the movement of the horse!

Summer Camp Blog News
2007-12-05 07:32:51
Great news! We were just added to the EatonWeb Blog Directory. It’s the oldest blog directory on the internet, and is very particular about which blogs the editors accept. The main editorial review they wrote about us is particularly excellent. Here it is. “This is the online journal of the Rockbrook Camp for Girls, a summer camp located in the mountains of North Carolina. Having been established in 1921, the camp itself is steeped in history, and this blog (started in January 2005) is a brave step forward into cyberspace. Along with camp announcements and info on their program, staff, and campers, the blog offers a great sneak peek into the camp’s fun activities courtesy of photos and experiences from camp alumnae. We can’t stress enough the coolness of the photos here; they alone are enough reason to visit the Rockbrook Camp blog. Parents might even get a tip or two about kids’ activities which they can carry out in their own backyards!”

Outdoor Games for Kids
2007-12-03 10:35:45
Here’s a great outdoor game for kids to try… Dizzy Lizzy. It’s actually a relay, a game where two or more teams race each other while completing some challenging task or overcoming some kind of obstacle. In this case, members of each team line up and one by one run a ways out to a baseball bat on the ground. There they have to put their forehead on the bat, and keeping the other end on the ground, spin around the bat a few times (usually 3, 4 or 5 times). Needless to say, this makes you quite dizzy, and then comes the most difficult part— running back to your team so the next person can go. It’s always pretty funny to see a dizzy person try to run in a straight line, and pretty fun to try it yourself! Next time you need a fun outdoor game for kids, give it a try!

Summer Camp Logo Design
2007-12-19 10:38:02
Kelsie Rae, our great counselor last summer, wrote to share this cool camp logo she designed for a class in college. We love the mountains and sun— just perfect for camp. But also the redbird, the Rockbrook summer camp emblem, is super cool. Thanks Kelsie!

Camp Girls on the Run
2007-12-17 11:05:28
Rockbrook has its own “Girls on the Run” program in the summer. If you’re not familiar with it, Girls on the Run is a national program (with individual local chapters) that helps girls “develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running.” Did you know that Charlotte, one of Rockbrook’s former directors, is one of the coaches for the Brevard GOTR program? Here’s an article about it. The article does an excellent job describing the program and the benefits it provides the girls who participate. You’ll see it’s a great thing to do!

Camp Jobs
2007-12-14 12:11:42
This is the time of year when we start announcing our summer camp jobs. Each summer part of our camp staff return to be counselors, trip leaders, and activity instructors, but we also accept applications from new people who would like to work at camp. With 200 girls at camp each session, we need lots of people to help with the program. In fact, we’ll have almost 100 employees during the summer helping! So if you, or someone you know, would like to learn more about our camp jobs, get in touch with us (or fill out this form) and we’ll send you an information packet.

Summer Camps Sports
2007-12-12 05:25:59
Tennis is one of the traditional sports we play at Rockbrook. It’s another summer camp activity that just fits perfectly. When you get out on a clay court surrounded by big trees (rather than a big slab of asphalt out in the wide open), get to goof around with your friends, and probably learn a little about playing better, it’s really great. Hey, I’ll meet you during free time before dinner and we’ll hit a few!

Outdoor Programs for Girls
2007-12-10 18:41:07
There’s something really special about spending most of your time outdoors. When you’re a girl who goes to school all day, rides around in a car between things, and maybe lives where the weather is a little “tough” most of the time, it’s a rare thing to be outside. Because it’s so rare, it feels so liberating to have regular outdoor experience, to romp through a stream, feel a warm breeze, hear the sharp clap of thunder, get muddy and just plain explore all the wonders of nature. There’s a lot to say about how this time outdoors is extraordinarily good for us, but it’s perfectly fun too. Summer camp, of course, is one of the best places to find all this. It’s a place where you can recharge and balance out what we’ve been missing most of the year. Just thinking about it, makes us smile with anticipation!

Pottery Camp for Girls
2007-12-21 11:20:00
What’s the pottery program like at Rockbrook Camp? It’s fantastic! There are two different pottery studios at camp, each with work tables for hand building (using coils, slabs, and pinch techniques) and potter’s wheels for learning how to make wheel-thrown pots. No matter what their level of experience, campers can make all sorts of bowls, plates, cups, and sculptures. One popular thing to make is a whistle that you shape into some kind of animal, like a turtle for example. It’s neat to actually make your own pottery at camp instead of just glazing pre-made pots. After your creations are “bisque fired” (the first kiln firing that completely dries and stabilizes the pottery), you then paint on different color glazes, and after the final firing, you’ve got the coolest, shiny colored ceramics. Of course, in addition to learning all about this, it’s great to bring home all the pottery you’ve made.
