Camp in the Mountains
2007-10-04 09:29:38
Rockbrook camp is set in the mountains of western North Carolina on 200 acres a few miles south of Brevard. It’s unique because the main part of camp sits in a gently sloping valley between two large rocks, granite outcroppings, that can be seen quite easily from miles away. The smaller of the two, shown here, is Castle Rock, and the other is Dunn’s Rock. Both rocks are hiking destinations from camp and offer an amazing view of the French Broad River valley when you make it to the top. On Castle Rock, we have several rock climbing routes as well. For both hiking and rock climbing, it’s a great location right there on the camp property.

New Orleans Summer Camp Girls
2007-10-19 10:13:41
We had a great time down in New Orleans earlier this month. It was another fantastic Rockbrook Camp party complete with slides from last summer and the all-new video. Seeing current RBC campers and meeting so many new girls interested in attending camp next summer was such fun! Attending these events is the one of the best ways to rekindle that Rockbrook spirit and to learn a bit about what makes Rockbrook unique. It’s a chance to ask questions and to imagine yourself being a part of camp. A big thanks to Shelby (there she is with McKain!) and her family for hosting the party.

Leadership Summer Camp
2007-10-17 10:15:43
Summer camp is one of the best places for children to learn about leadership, to explore what it means to be a good leader, and to practice the kinds of personal skills important to being a leader. Bring together kids of different ages (at Rockbrook that’s girls between 6 and 16 years old) and provide so many activities where they interact and play together, and you’ll have one event after another where leadership is central. Campers find themselves asking questions like, “How can we work together on this?” and saying things like “Let’s make a plan.” It might be for a cabin skit or preparing for a group hike, but being a good listener, cooperating, maybe compromising, being creative about individual contributions, and being confident about being part of a team are almost daily parts of camp. Particularly for our oldest campers, for example the CAs who plan the end-of-session banquet, overnight camp offers (even requires, at times) chances

Summer Games for Kids
2007-10-24 09:14:10
What is that thing?! Well, the kids at camp have named it “The Toy,” but it’s basically an aqua ropes-course, a climbing structure made of wood and rope suspended over the water on one side of the Rockbrook lake. The most popular game kids play on it is really challenging— you try to reach the farthest of 5 rings (like the girl in the photo) as you go out hand-to-hand over the water. Of course, if you don’t make it, there’s a fun splash at the bottom! But if you do make it to the last ring, and only a few kids have, we announce your name in the dining hall and reward you with a special treat/prize. Do you know what the prize is? Let us know in the comments!

How to Make a Bracelet
2007-10-22 09:24:21
There’re loads of different techniques for making string friendship bracelets. We describe one right here on the Rockbrook Camp website: How to make a Friendship Bracelet . But there’s another way that uses a knot you probably already know and use for a different purpose. Tying your shoes! Yep, the same basic knot, pulling one strand over and around the second is it. Then you just alternate which string you move… like this (holding the two strings in each hand): right over the left, left over the right, right over the left, and so on. This makes kind of an alternating square knot, and depending on what colors you choose, it looks very cool.  So hey, go get some string and get started!

Summer Camp Lodge Renovation
2007-10-26 14:53:20
We’ve been getting so many questions about it, we thought we’d send along a quick update about the Lakeview Lodge renovation going on. Rockbrook has three cool old stone lodges, one for each age group (Juniors, Middlers and Seniors). They were built back in the 1920s and have wooden floors, huge fireplaces, and windows all around. The two largest ones have wooden framed (using Locust log posts!) porches wrapping around three sides. This fall we’re replacing the porches on one of these, the one that overlooks the Rockbrook Camp lake. It really is turning out great. The oak decking looks fabulous. Once we have the railings put up, it’ll really be awesome. We’ll keep you posted as things move ahead.

Girls Only Horse Camps
2007-11-02 08:56:37
There are all kinds of horse camps for girls out there, so we often get the question, “What kind of horse camp is Rockbrook?” Well, first of all, we’re a girls only horse camp (no surprise there!). Secondly, we ride and teach lessons in the American system of forward riding, mostly hunter jumper and some dressage. This is different from horse camps that ride western. Like other horse camps, girls at Rockbrook can ride every day, are placed in lessons according to their ability and horsemanship experience, and can spend extra time at the barn learning more about the horses and their care. At the same time, girls at Rockbrook don’t spend all of their time riding or being with the horses because there are so many other activities going on at camp. Rockbrook is primarily a traditional overnight summer camp for girls that also has one of the finest riding programs around. You will ride a lot at Rockbrook and learn a lot about how to ride better, but you&rsqu

Here’s a set of photos taken one Sunday afternoon at camp. We were queuing up for our cabin photos and took these at the same time. They show our traditional uniforms (white shirt and shorts, plus a red tie) that we wear on Sundays and at other special events.

Camp Girls Halloween Costumes
2007-10-29 08:30:39
It was a big time this weekend in Brevard as loads of people came out for the annual Halloween Fest. The highlight of the day is a costume parade for anyone who wants to dress up and join in, and sure enough we spotted two Rockbrook campers! There’s Eliza as an iPod and Kaden as a Fairy. Hey, what are you going to be for Halloween? [UPDATE]: Eliza won third place in the “Best Homemade Costume” category.  Congratulations Eliza!

Kids Summer Activities - Climbing!
2007-10-15 12:44:33
Following our recent posts on Castle Rock and Dunn’s Rock, the two big granite outcroppings on the Rockbrook kids camp property, we can’t neglect to talk about rock climbing because we have such great opportunities to climb right here at camp. There’s so much rock so accessible from camp, it’s easy to get excited about rock climbing as a summer activity. The girls have loads of opportunities to climb and several routes to challenge their skills. The two favorite routes…? WHIM and WHAM. Fun routes, each about 80 feet high. Stay tuned; we’ve got plans to develop two or three new routes up on Castle Rock. We’ll keep you posted.

The New Queen - Chase!
2007-10-12 14:33:35
Look who was crowned the Brevard High School Homecoming Queen last Friday Night. Yep, it’s Chase! It’s no surprise to us, because we all know she’s the queen of fun at Rockbrook. Way to go Chase!

Youth Equestrian Camps
2007-10-10 10:35:55
Here’s something fun. Over at GirlsHorseClub.com, they are starting a poll for everyone interested in horses, horseback riding and anything equestrian-related. It’s a series of questions that give you a chance to imagine. For example, how would you remake a famous equestrain movie so you could play a part? If you could ask a horse a question and hear the answer, what would you ask and which horse would you choose? If you could travel back in time and meet a famous horse, which one would it be? Hmmm…. Interesting questions to ponder, so head on over and share your thoughts. Movie? Probably Wild Hearts Can’t be Broken. Of the Rockbrook horses from our youth equestrian camp, we’d have to ask Danny what he thinks about his new digs! Historic Horse? How about Isham, Buffalo Bill Cody’s horse.

Outdoor Youth Camps
2007-10-08 09:42:05
Here’s a view of the other large prominent rock on the Rockbrook Camp property: Dunn’s Rock. This is looking across one of the riding rings back toward the main part of camp and up the hill to the rock. More so than Castle Rock, Dunn’s is famous. In fact, it is the site of an early settlement that pre-dates the incorporation of Brevard, and it served as a sheltered place (under an overhanging part) where men returning from the civil war met and formed a Masonic Lodge. It’s neat to think how before it was an outdoor youth camp, Rockbrook hosted some of the earliest settlers in this part of North Carolina.

Summer Camp History
2007-10-02 09:47:37
Here is a glimpse into Rockbrook Summer Camp history. A family here is Brevard, the Tuckers, who are related to the Carriers, who founded Rockbrook back in 1921, found a stack of old camp photos and passed them along to us. Some certainly show their age, but there are so many fascinating shots of what camp was like in the past. This is a good example showing the original uniforms the girls wore. Amazing!

Camps in the South
2007-09-28 08:58:44
Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been making our fall travel plans, scheduling Rockbrook Camp parties all over the south. Several are set on the calendar. Chances are we’re coming to your city or some place close by, so check out the schedule here: Camp Party Schedule. If you haven’t come to one of these parties before, they’re great fun. We watch a movie and see some slides from last summer, see each other again and meet loads of new people interested in camp for next summer. We’ll be going to more places in the winter also, so stay tuned!

Kids Camp in NC
2007-09-27 10:13:46
Rockbrook is a kids camp in NC, that’s for sure, but we have so many kids that come to camp from other states far and wide. Of course, most are in the south— South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Florida —but campers come from the midwest (e.g. Ohio!) and the northeast as well. Most campers drive to camp with their parents, so being within a day’s drive is the norm. Still, plenty of kids end up flying to camp when they live too far away to drive (like in California!). North Carolina is just a great location for camp, even if (and especially if!) you don’t live here.

Kids Summer Crafts
2007-09-18 08:59:04
Giving kids a chance to explore crafts, to learn new ways of being creative, is a big part of summer camp. Rockbrook has almost 20 different craft activities for example. Each lets the girls express themselves creatively and make something cool. There’s plenty of time (It’s summer after all!), all the right materials, someone to show you how to get started, and plenty of friends to hang out with while working. It’s the kind of experience that’s hard to duplicate anywhere else, and it’s completely fun!

Teen Summer Camps
2007-09-14 14:38:13
Another activity that was particularly popular this summer with our older, teen campers was whitewater kayaking. It’s just a lot of fun to learn how to maneuver those play boats. You put on all your gear… spray top, PFD, helmet, grab your equipment… paddle, spray skirt, and boat, and you’re ready for some great adventure. Teen summer camps like Rockbrook offer these more technical activities and out-of-camp trips, and as campers return to camp year after year, they can really develop amazing outdoor skills. This is a photo from a trip at the Lower Green River.

Dolly’s Ice Cream - A summer camp tradition
2007-09-12 09:52:30
Couldn’t resist sending along this article about our favorite local ice cream shop, Dolly ’s Dairy Bar. It’s from the online edition of the Hendersonville newspaper, The Times-News. If you’ve been to Dolly’s, you’ll love the article and enjoy hearing some of the trivia it reports. For example, did you know that Dolly’s has a total of 54 different flavors, including the 22 “summer camp flavors, ” and did you know that the Rockbrook flavor, Rockbrook Chocolate Illusion, is one of the top 5 flavors? Our campers just love the place. If you’re ever in the Brevard area, you should check it out!

Kindergarten Camp
2007-11-05 12:26:15
How old are the youngest children that attend Rockbrook? That question does come up now and then, and at times the answer is surprising. If a girl has completed kindergraten, she can come to camp, assuming of course both she and her parents are ready camp. An outgoing and social personality, an excitement for trying new activities, a growing sense of independence and self-conifidence are all helpful qualities. And with encouragment from their parents, there are always a few kindergarteners in our camp sessions. This is why the youngest campers, who we call “juniors,” can be six or even five years old. Rockbrook has a long tradition of camp activities and programs specially suited for children this young. The stone building in the photo is the Junior Lodge, our assembly building for special Junior Line programs.

Lexington Kentucky Camp Girls
2007-11-09 10:52:00
Over in Lexington , Kentucky , Sarah had a chance to meet up with Una MacCarthy at the camp party there. It was a great blast from the past, from the 1980s to be exact. Una has a long history with Rockbrook, attending as a camper, working as a counselor and even filling the Program Director post for while. Now she’s the Middle School Head and Assistant Head of School at The Lexington School. Here she is with her two boys, Justin and George, and Sarah.

Adventure Camp Kids
2007-11-07 09:17:49
Kids at Rockbrook Camp also go on great adventure trips right here in the western mountains of North Carolina where we’re located. It’s just perfect for all kinds of outdoor adventure activity. There’s backpacking through the national forests, rock climbing on all the amazing granite around here, and paddling on the wild whitewater rivers nearby. Some of these trips are appropriate for our older campers, but kids of all ages can look forward to getting out and experiencing the excitement of the outdoors. This photo shows the most popular outdoor adventure activity kids enjoy at camp— whitewater rafting. We take every girl who’s old enough (The Forest Service restricts access by age and weight.) rafting on the Nantahala River. It’s a fun rock’m sock’m ride.

Girls Gymnastics Camps
2007-11-16 10:59:16
The gymnastics camp activity at Rockbrook is designed for girls who want to explore gymnastics as a sport for recreation and personal growth. It is one activity offered as part of our overall tradtional summer camp program and is not really for girls who want to train for gymnastics competitions (like this gymnastics camp). Instead we focus on offering instruction in fundamental gymnastic skills and techniques, activities that will be both fun and helpful no matter what your gymnastics background. Our instructors teach children’s gymnastics classes throughout the school year, so they are well prepared to design different lessons for the different age groups and ability levels. Ready… flip!
