, and the extremely hassle free Ubuntu installer, more users have, if not started mainstream usage, atleast experimenting with this flavor of Linux. Here are some open source (read: free) stuff that will get you started with Ubuntu 7.04.
1. Amarok
Amarok is a unix/linux music player with a nice interface, playlist manager, 10 band equalizer and also automatically fetches your album cover art.
sudo apt-get install amarok
2. VLC
With your music needs sorted out with the above, now to your videos. You needn’t look any further than VLC, by far the best cross platform media player. You could also install the VLC plugins and use it as a streaming server.
sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-*

The VAIO® LT is Sony
’s rival for the Apple’s iMac. It’s got all the bells and whistles of an iMac, bu runs on Windows, plus now, its offering more. It’s got a PC/TV combined and now loaded with a Blu-Ray drive. Of course Apple promises to equip its iMacs with the Blu-Ray eventually but Sony seems to have beat them to it. Meanwhile lets see what Sony has got to offer with the Vaio LT. (more…)

Looking very similar to the Dual Music Player(DMP), featured here, designer Yeon-shin Seung has extended it to play DVDs naming it the PDP( Portable DVD player
) and also managed to squeeze an OLED screen. Not just any other OLED screen, Yeon-shin plans on using the Sony full color flexible organic electroluminescent display that is thin & lightweight. Unlike the DMP, the PDP works by twisting the candybar and then inserting a DVD. As for the display, the OLED screen pops out of candybar as seen in the pictures. I once read some where that NASA had spent quite a fortune on research creating a ink based pen that works in space. I’m not sure of the sources, but here’s one I can assure you can get your hands on…if you like the concept. Its a pen that uses no ink and writes on most typical papers we use today! Its a stainless steel pen about 8cm long and the ‘nib’ is a solid piece of metal. Grand Illusions has shown an example of what it would look like when used on a normal paper.

Designed by Eno Setiawan, the Vaio Zoom pictured here uses a holographic technology and its all sandwiched within a thin glass form making its total width less than an inch. When the machine is off, the screen is completely transparent and the keyboard goes opaque. Switch it on and everything comes to life. Even the mouse buttons are holographic. It’s still in the concept stage, but who knows this is what computers of the future might look like! Even if it does, I’m sure they would come up with a more durable form(recommend) other than glass. I would kill myself, if I had dropped one of these..

Intel has joined with a couple of IT giants like HP, Microsoft, NEC, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments to boost the speed of the USB to 10 times and they’ve named it USB 3.0. The new word is Optical, yes the new USB 3.0 uses use optical, along with copper to boost speeds to around 4.8 gigabits per second, which makes it a viable option for networking and even connecting monitors.

to reach UK by Christmas, according to our previous post. Apple has surprised us with its iPhone launch today in London. Apple has announced O2 as their carrier. Unfortunately UK is also getting the same iPhone launched in US with no sign of 3G. Apple claims that the battery life on the iPhone still isnt substantial for 3G. Mercedes is known to make a drivers’ life more comfortable ( and more lazy) with every new model they release. In fact they were the first, to introduce distance control sensors that automatically brings a car to a dead stop in a traffic jam and then bring the car back to the preset speed as the traffic picks up again. Guess what they are gonna implement now. This time its a laser system that will scan the ahead of you including the potholes and adjusts the S-Class suspension accordingly! Wow! that means you’d be in for a smooth ride all the way and the suspension will do the hard work! I wonder if it can take potholes on the Indian roads though!
The technology, which is slated for the S-Class, was part of Mercedes F700 concept

First there was the dictionaries to translate one language to another. Then came the pocket translators, which was then considered the best ever. Now we have softwares and apps like Google translate and Babel fish to do the same. Well some of us know how hilarious they can be. Fuji Xerox is out to change all that for good hopefully! The photocopier pictured above from Xerox can scan a printed a sheet of Japanese
text from a newspaper or magazine and out comes a translated version of it in Chinese, Korean or Engish, while still retaining the original layout.

The 11-inch SonyDrive XEL-1 features a 960 x 540 pixel resolution, terrestrial digital tuner, two 1W speakers, HDMI v1.3, USB, and Ethernet jacks in a package measuring 287 x 140 x 253-mm and only weighing 2-kgs. The next big question is “How much?” Its estimated to be around $1,740, that’s about $160 per inch of OLED. Ouch! now that’s quite a bit for a state of the art OLED TV.
