Cause: Couture 2007-08-08 16:31:00 Come September 12th, fashionable women of DC will descened upon Georgetown. The twice annual function that brings about designer-jean clad women is the District Sample Sale. The proceeds from the sale, which are discounted designer threads from the previous fashion season, usually go to a specified not-for-profit organization. This season the shop-til-you-drop cause will benefit Miriam's House, a residence in DC that has been set up for women who are either HIV-positive or are living with AIDS. Some stores that have contributed merchandise to the cause are Urban Chic, Simply Soles, and Maggie and Lola.

On Style 2007-08-08 12:20:00 Style. Trend. There tends to be confusion about the two words. While style is what you make of it, trends are what the masses follow at the same point in time. Style broadcasts what the individual prefers. However, if many individuals broadcast the same style, then a trend has occurred. Style can be a little hard to spot. Trends, on the other hand, are easy to spot – in magazines, on television, while walking down the street.
Something as simple as a woman wearing black from head-to-toe – black heels, a black pencil skirt and a black cardigan – may, at first glance, seem boring or bland. However, paired with the all-black look may be a funky pair of green dangling earrings or perhaps the hairstyle doesn’t quite “match” the look. Perhaps the woman is a brunette and has her hair streaked with red, platinum, and jet-black highlights. That, in my opinion, is style. She has taken a conventional look and spun it on its head, putting her own idea on the look. If by the following w Read more:Style
It Simply Does Not Go Out of Style 2007-08-11 09:39:00 It's been burned into the collective fashion conscience that the Little Black Dress is the classic, timeless clothing piece to own. Coco Chanel made this dress popular in the '20s. (She also made it popular to come back from vacation with a decidely sunkist appearance. She was fashion-forward, to say the least.) There is a certain footwear that I would classify as timeless as well: The high-heeled ankle boot. It seems that many fall fashion magazines push the style, the uniqueness, the versatility of the ankle boot. These are my two favorite (my only, really) pairs. The suede pair are what I bought for myself at Target, which is one of my favorite places to shop. The buckled boot I received as a gift either on my birthday or for Christmas five and a half years ago. Therein lies the reason why I make the claim that ankle boots have yet to go out of style. Nearly six years have past, and the boots are still relevant.
The ankle boot comes in various incarnations, but ultimately, with fu Read more:Style
They make my calves look good 2007-08-09 18:16:00 I am coveting these pair of Jean-Michel Cazabat heels. And that's all I can ever do because these beauties cost $500. They are just so luscious, it hurts.
My appreciation for high heels comes from my mother. She was my first style icon. My younger years occurred during the Eighties, which means that my early frame of fashion reference is the ubiquitous shoulder pad. Many of my mother's dresses and suit jackets and blouses were equipped with the shoulder-raising trend made popular by the grand dame bitch of night-time soaps, Alexis Carrington Colby. My mother was also a great seamstress, something that I took for granted when I was younger. As an elementary school-aged child, I didn't want my mother to make my clothes; I wanted to wear the clothes my friends wore. Little did I know the greatness of wearing a one-of-a-kind outfit, the kind that nowadays will come with the suggestion "For pricing, call 1.800.DESIGNR" in Vogue or Elle. She had the eye for style. She still does. And with Read more:calves
A Search on High 2007-08-09 04:03:00 There's one fashion staple that is, unfortunately, hard for me to get right the first time: Jeans. Due the curvuture of my body, it's been pretty much impossible for me to find that a pair of jeans that fit just right. There's been the inevitable gapping in the back because my bum and thighs were curvy while my waist, in proportion to said bum and thighs, was smaller. For many years, I simply accepted the fact that I would have to buy jeans one size bigger (to accommodate the rear) and wear a belt. Of course, because I can't stand belted jeans (I'm more of a wide belt over top kind of gal), I went through the (very intentional) low-rise phase that occured naturally because my jeans were slightly large.
Not much has changed, most especially because within the past year, I've turned into a gym bunny. Excluding these past two weeks, I've been in the gym four times a day--Monday nights for yoga; Tuesday evenings on the treadmill and elliptical; Wednesday night for yogalates; and Thu Read more:Search
Old is New Again 2007-08-13 15:26:00 Seasons ago it was the low-rise. Low-rise slacks, low-rise jeans; they were ubiquitous. Yet, as years have passed, the waistline of pants and skirts have slowly crept up, up, up to the point where it's now in to wear high-waisted bottoms. The trend is, in essence, an updated retelling of fashion from the 1930s. Personally, I love the style from the late 20s/early 30s era. I gained an appreciation for it after reading novels like The Great Gatsby and Passing. Additionally, I found myself being drawn to the style when I discovered Conde Nast art almost ten years ago. Vintage Vogue covers like these sparked an interest:

And Across the Pond 0000-00-00 00:00:00 British designers are nothing new. However, British designers who happened to be married to an actor who had sex with his children's nanny may very well be something new. Sienna Miller, working with her sister Savannah, has come up with Twenty8Twelve (Sienna's birth date). I had a look at some ... Read more:Across

The Future’s So Bright 0000-00-00 00:00:00 A burst of color. For me, that's always been my motto. However, in seasons past, color was reserved strictly for Spring and Summer. Designers ... Read more:Future

Global-Conscious Fashion 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Is it an oxymoron to be a fashionista concerned about the environment or the treatment of animals or human beings? Oh la la! 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Style and French chic go hand-in-hand. With a language that has more than one word for "scarf" (écharpe, châle, foulard), and in a country that dictates more than one way to wrap it, Parisian chic still manages to come off as effortless. Those high-waist pants with that slim men's undershirt ...
