Silver Anniversary
2007-10-08 12:20:00
We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary tomorrow. I don't have any wedding or anniversary images in my portfolio yet, so I will use a photo of where we will be spending our day.We will be going back to the spot that we met, and will then spend the rest of the day enjoying the ocean - our favorite place. The weatherman is predicting rain - as it was on our wedding day - so rain jackets and umbrellas will be on hand.We will have to leave the convertible top up on the car, but the windows will be down - I'm not missing that salty tang of the ocean air for nothing. There have been ups and downs over the years, but I would do it all over again to end up where we are now. Happy Anniversary to my dear Husband!

Mushrooms
2007-10-06 09:50:00
The autumn mushrooms are beginning to appear in our area.We have had a really dry end of summer and fall season so far and the amount and kinds that are usually around have not come up this year.We have some rain moving in the beginning of this week, so it should help bring the dampness that they need to grow. These little ones were shot with the Tamrom 90mm macro lens. I didn't notice the bug on the little mushroom until I was processing the image. They only last for a couple days at the most, though. When I went back the next day to get some more shots, they were already beginning to decay. Stumble It! Digg It!

A stock image of a gear shifter from a 1986 Nissan 300ZX.She has almost two hundred thousand miles on her now, but she still handles like a dream. Owning her for the last ten years has been a pleasure. The joy I felt the first time I drove her has not diminished over the years. As with all sports cars, she has needed more than her share of repairs which has kept her performance and handling smooth and tight. The New England winters have been hard on her. She is put up as soon as it snows, but no matter how I keep her cleaned off and run regularly, the rust has begun to eat into her frame. She is to the point that she needs too much work now - more than my husband can do to keep her safely on the road.Come spring she will have to find a new home - hopefully someone who will have the resources to restore her and will appreciate what this little classic Z car has to offer. Blog Action Day - Photography's Contribution to the Environment
2007-10-15 06:59:00
Today, October 15, bloggers around the world are uniting for Blog Action Day. The environment is the topic, and I would like to post about the positive affect that digital photography has had on it.There are many landfills in the small towns across America, and they appear much like the above image - most of them are much larger . These landfills contain many years of trash, refuse, chemicals, and materials both man-made and natural. Many years ago when I was first learning the skills of photography, I was also learning the back-end of the art - the darkroom. While mixing and using the many chemicals to process the film and then produce the prints, I never gave much thought to their disposal when I was finished with them. After moving to a small town, it became obvious to me what was happening with these chemicals - they were ending up in the landfill where they would continue to leach into the ground and air for many years to come.I am so pleased with the direction that photography h

Breast Cancer Awareness
2007-10-12 09:10:00
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and this post is in support of this cause.I am dedicating this post to two dear friends who have passed away from breast cancer in the last few years.Cathy was my mother's best friend for as long as I can remember. Her long red hair portrayed her exuberance for life and to know her was to like her. She lived every minute of her 56 years to the fullest.Sally was the wife of my husband's best friend whom I met shortly after getting married. This big hearted lady always had a smile and I liked her the moment I met her. I think of Sally every time I make peanut butter fudge - her recipe for it is the most divine I have ever tasted. She was 43.Neither of these ladies have breast cancer in their families. Both were mothers who were always on top of their yearly exams and mammograms. They were active and lived healthy lifestyles. They will live on in the hearts of their friends and family, and we will continue to promote awareness and se

Red Berries
2007-10-02 07:25:00
Another sign of fall is all the little red berries that are appearing on the plants and bushes.I found these ones down by the edge of the lake water. I don't know if the birds eat these ones, but they have been eating the ones we have in the back yard. The squirrels and chipmunks are also joining in.I have one little red squirrel that breaks off a branch with the berries, climbs to a nook in a tree branch, picks all the leaves off, then eats each berry and discards the branch. Quite a pile of leaves and twigs are building up under that tree. Of course, when I go out with the camera, he beats feet and is no where to be found. I think he is laughing at me because he watches me watching him through the window.

Maple Leaves

After a very hot week with record setting temperatures, Autumn has returned this morning. The fall colors are vibrant this year due to the heavy rains we had this spring. I don't know if we will make it to the mountains this year, but I bet the colors up there are gorgeous.I used a Moose's Polarizing filter with my Tamron 90 mm macro lens for this shot. The polarizer really enhanced the blues, as they are meant to do, and the reds were accented by the the warming filter that is built into it.

Bloggers Unite to End Abuse
2007-09-27 07:25:00
Back on 8/27 I posted an entry titled Bloggers Unite. Today, September 27, many bloggers worldwide will posting with a single thought in mind - to prevent and end abuse of many different kinds.I have thought about this post for quite a while now, and have had a hard time coming up with a name to give the abuse I want to blog about.I think that Abuse of the Earth is the best title to describe my topic. This little self-contained planet has all we need to sustain life indefinitely, as long as we pay attention and give back to her also. We are depleting her natural resources at an astonishing rate. As the third world countries continue to improve their living and economic conditions, those resources are becoming even more valuable and we do not have an indefinite supply. We can grow more wood and food but how do we grow more oil or fresh water. We have become a society of enormous consumption - leaving a trail of refuse behind each one of us. This "trash" cannot keep piling up foreve

Grapes to Wine
2007-09-23 09:16:00
My daughter came to dinner one night this past week bearing gifts - a huge basket filled with freshly picked purple Concord Grapes.Making jams and jellies has always been something that I enjoy, but grape jelly has never been a favorite in my house so making all that jelly now that the kids are grown is not a sensible thing.Cruising the internet for grape recipes didn't yield any results that sounded too appetizing or would use up this large quantity. My husband suggested trying some grape wine. This would be something new and different, so I searched online for an easy method.Since I had all the ingredients, grapes, water, sugar and yeast on hand, that cinched the decision to make the wine.It needs to sit for at least 21 days. Today is day two, and my kitchen is already smelling like grapes and yeast - I can just imagine what it will be like by 21 days.I think the mixture is going to be delegated to the porch soon - I have a feeling we will wake up some morning drunk from the fumes

People Photos
2007-09-21 07:51:00
Taking images of people is something that I have always shied away from when dealing with stock photography.I have many people photos that include family members, but since I am opposed to posting them on the internet, they do not get added to my stock portfolio. In order to submit people images on the various stock sites, each photo requires a signed model release from each person in the photo. This gives the photographer and agency permission to sell and license the image for various media uses.Going up to complete strangers and having them sign a model release is not something I can do, so therefore I do not get the people images that sell so well on the stock sites. Until I can work up the nerve to approach people in this manner, I will continue to shoot people from behind, at a distance, or in parts so I can use them in my stock portfolio.

I is for Ice Hockey.......This was the coldest day of the winter last year.We grabbed our ice skates and went to the park in town that maintains a pond for public skating.Twice around the pond was all I could stand with the wind chill. The boys shuffled the hockey puck around a few more minutes before they joined me in the car for a warm up.Back out for a few minutes with the camera, then we were off for a hot chocolate warm-up.

Autumn Chill
2007-09-17 06:38:00
Autumn has finally arrived and the morning chill is beginning to creep into the bones. Summer was just here a couple weeks ago - how fast it changes!I have been doing some experimenting with back lighting lately. For macro shots it is easier to control the exposure without a lot of blown out areas.I am still experimenting with non-macro images, and I tend to have a hard time calculating the correct exposure. Bracketing once again gives me a choice, and I find myself favoring the darker images as there is more detail in the under exposed areas. The only worry is the digital noise that tends to creep into the darker images. This was a big concern with my point and shoot camera, and the worry has carried over into my DSLR shooting. From reading several sources, the advice given is to "shoot to the right", which means to have the picture a bit more over exposed than underexposed.I will continue to experiment with the back lighting as it can give some dramatic effects when it all works to
