Tables Still Have a Place in Web Page Layout
2007-08-03 02:43:45
Writes: Kevin Yank At tonight’s meeting of the Melbourne Web Standards Group, Andrew Krespanis and I have been assigned to argue for the statement “Tables Still Have a Place in Web Page Layout.” Here’s a sneak peek at what we plan to say! Please bear in mind: we may not actually agree with everything that is stated here! HTML tables enable web designers do one thing very well: design with 2D grids. And let’s face it: if one thing has remained constant in web design over the past ten years, it’s that designs are commonly based on 2D grids. Without tables, HTML content is designed to only stack vertically, one block on top of the other. Grids require the horizontal and vertical stacking that tables can provide. You can emulate this to some extent using CSS floats, but that’s not what floats were designed to do; using them this way tends to produce a lot of unexpected problems and trigger obscure browser bugs. The biggest reason given for avoiding

Matt Cutts Pokes Fun at Keyword Stuffer
2007-07-29 03:02:21
Crying about Google ignoring your keyword stuffed web pages just gives Matt Cutts and the rest of the SEO world something to gleefully mock. Note: Naughty tricks aimed at gaming the search engines usually backfire as search companies catch on and make adjustments. There’s always someone willing to try something like keyword stuffing. Has that person ever been you (before you knew better, of course)? It’s a conspiracy, man. The Google hierarchy doesn’t want you to know how to become immortal. It’s totally true, you can read it on the Internet, you just can’t find it through Google, see? Yeah, we see what you did there, or at least Matt did. Some people will still try old tricks to get noticed by the search engine. Matt highlighted one website whose owner offers the key to immortality (magnetic rings) and one of the more entertaining keyword stuffing examples you’ll see today. “‘Internal vaginal aphrodisia doping hardware?’ Huh? ‘Directory Submitter’ Review — Software Gets You Tons Of Quality 1 Way Links
2007-07-02 17:10:51
You may or may not know that Website Directory Submission is a very popular and easy way to get quality, one way links to your website. These kinds of links are exactly what the search engines are looking for. The websites with more quality, one way links typically rank the highest, period. With that said, there are several website directory submission programs on the market. The best and easiest to use is a new program created by Brad Callen, called Directory Submitter . The software currently contains around 1700 website directories, all free. It is the most straight forward program that we’ve come across, in that all you need to do is: 1. Input your website details (i.e. title, description, URL, etc.) into the software 2. Click on the directory you want to submit to And then the program will automatically fill in your website details. Then, you simply click the submit button and your website is instantly submitted to the directory. Then, you can move to the next directory, go t

Social Media Optimization’s impact at your Web site
2007-06-28 00:31:10
Social Media Optimization ’s impact at your Web site Writes: Boris Mordkovich Over the last year or so, "social media" has quickly become the next "big" thing online. A plethora of social communities with names like Digg, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, Wikipedia and YouTube have popped up to connect people who share common interests. As impressive as all that may sound, what does it actually mean to you, the operator of a small- to mid-sized ecommerce site? What benefits can you reap from social media optimization (SMO), and how should you approach it? First, let’s review what SMO is. In a nutshell, social media optimization is the use of any sort of content that creates buzz within a specific community and attracts audience participation. A good example is Digg. At this site, Digg community members identify news stories and articles they like by "digging" them or express dissatisfaction by "burying" them. The upside is that stories with a

Insider information about Google’s ranking algorithm
2007-06-19 16:42:50
The New York Times has recently published an article about Amit Singhal. Amit Singhal is in charge of Google ’s ranking algorithm . The interview reveals some interesting facts about Google’s ranking algorithm. Google knows that its algorithm is not perfect "Tweaking and quality control involve a balancing act. ‘You make a change, and it affects some queries positively and others negatively,” […] ‘You can’t only launch things that are 100 percent positive.’" "[…] Any of Google’s 10,000 employees can use its ‘Buganizer’ system to report a search problem, and about 100 times a day they do." Why Google changes its algorithm The article lists a concrete example why Google could change its algorithm: "Recently, a search for ‘French Revolution’ returned too many sites about the recent French presidential election campaign — in which candidates opined on various policy revolutions —

Conversion Rate Optimization Vs. SEO
2007-06-16 06:25:51
By Frederick Townes Within the e-commerce sphere, the “mind games” between site owners and search engine designers have focused on search engine optimization (SEO ). After all, you can’t make a sale if visitors aren’t reaching your site. However, as the web marketplace grows exponentially more competitive, attention among webmasters and site owners has turned to conversion optimization – converting site visitors to buyers. Conversion optimization has nothing to do with SEO. SEO is designed for spiders and bots. Conversion optimization is based on two factors only: the needs and motivations of human site visitors and persuasive site content and design to encourage humans to make a purchase or perform some other action. Any other considerations are sub-sets of these two factors in conversion optimization strategies. Measuring Human Motivations and Site Effectiveness SEO is based on the development of numbers (metrics) that are immutable. Numbers are numbers, the

It’s Curtains For Google Adsense Arbitragers
2007-06-06 21:28:36
Writes — Ba Kiwanuka Playing the Arbitrage game — “There’s a strong correlation between Google Adwords and Google Adsense which so happens to be the basis of the whole Adsense arbitrage technique. Wily marketers realized that if they could bid on cheap Adwords and send a lot of traffic from there to MFAs (Made-For-Adsense sites), which traditionally had little else on them except high paying Adsense ads, then those marketers could make a killing! And many of them did! Google has finally reached the point of zero tolerance! Where beforehand they’d been treating Adsense profiteers with something akin to kids gloves, now they’ve adopted the big stick approach and ripped off those glove! As of June 1, 2007 Google has indefinitely suspended (interpret as forever) all Adsense Publisher accounts that it deemed guilty of the crime of conduct unbecoming; in other words those accounts that largely catered to MFAs and Adsense Template sites! …..article c

Search Marketing Industry Shake-up Imminent
2007-08-12 06:18:55
Writes Jim Hedger As sure as the sun shines behind the clouds on a rainy day, a major shake-up in the search marketing industry is coming soon. The signals are being sent and received through-out the various sectors of search and online marketing. Change in any marketplace, when it does come, is often swift, brutal and merciless. For some SEO practitioners, this one will be especially so. While the search marketing industry has been bracing for change for at least a year, the movement is now picking up speed and gathering momentum. As SEOs, our working-world is going to look very different this time next year. The biggest change is the death of “traditional SEO.” Dead is taking it a bit far. SEO is not exactly dead. A better way to describe it would be to say it dyed (changed). SEO has evolved so far and so quickly in the past six months that it as a practice is hardly recognizable from its humble roots, much like a Neanderthal placed beside any given Homo Sapien. The threa

Competitive SEO Evaluations: Individual Keyword Phrase Analysis
2007-05-10 23:39:47
Writes: Fernando Chavez It is common for Web sites to rank very well for certain keywords but not very well for others. This makes sense since the competitive landscape changes from one keyword phrase to the next. There may be 300,000 search results for keyword A and 1,000,000 search results for keyword B. Do you want Google’s new branding on your site?

By: William Charlwood What do you think of the new-style AdSense ads where the Google logo is more prominent? Personally I don’t like them.
