Attendio for Event Marketing
2007-08-08 01:05:40
Do you have lots of events and are always trying to get the word out? Check out Attendio.com. Attendio is a really neat widget that allows you to share your event schedule and calendar information on networks such as MySpace or Facebook. The information to the widget is pulled from your Attendio profile, which is easily updated online. You can share your code (just a flash code similar to YouTube videos) with your friends that might be interested in keeping up with what you’re doing. Bands, concert promoters, record labels, trade shows, radio programs, sports teams, and so many other businesses could make great use of this widget.

Quick Tips for Facebook marketing
2007-08-02 13:53:40
Have you started marketing on Facebook yet? If you’re business is on MySpace, you need to be on Facebook too (and as many other networks as you can get on). When marketing on Facebook the key is broadening your network. The way to do this is expand! Join as many groups as you possibly can, send out several comments, write notes, add friends, add events, join events, post on event walls (this is a good one), find high activity comment boards and post!, add many photos, make sure all your privacy settings are OFF. The more you do and expand, the easier it is for people to find you. Just about every action on Facebook shows up in your friends’ mini-feed also. This is like automatic reminder-advertising and it’s free. I’m going to be writing an ~25 page e-book about marketing on Facebook, which will include so many secrets it’ll be sure to blow your mind! Look for this in the next few months.

MySpace IM - 19 Million Users
2007-08-01 15:29:57
I’m sure you’ve heard of the MySpace Instant Messenger. It’s been out for a while but they’ve only recently began promoting it and are claiming that the program already has 19 million users. Kind of hard to believe, but possible given the amount of MySpace users. It could catch up to AIM in time (63 million users according to mashable.com), but the loyalty aim has is very high since it’s been around for a much longer period of time. It does offer some good promotion tools so it would make sense for any marketer to make use of it. One very important aspect being the ability to connect users that are currently online. If you have 1000 friends, the time lapse in conversations between logins can hinder the development of personal relationships with your friends, but using this tool, you could message users when they are online and talk to them in real time. If you’re interested in getting it, you can download in the MySpace website here.

Keep it Lean
2007-07-27 03:57:14
I’m sure you guys know the experience… you’re surfing myspace and click on some user, and suddenly, everything stops… your buttons don’t work and the user’s profile is totally blank… that is, until about ten seconds go by. This sort of thing is typical for users, but for businesses, bands, or any type of profile that has commercial ties, this is a definite NO-NO! The reason it takes so long for some of these pages to load is because they have too much crap stuff on their profile page and loading all of it takes forever. MySpace pages tend to load all at once, so users won’t be able to view your profile until all of it has been loaded. Remember to keep it slim, and if you need more space, use your blog pages. The blog pages are great way to expand information and use them as additional pages as if your profile was a website. Earlier I posted a tutorial on optimizing your profile with some good limits and tips. Check it out here if you&r

Keeping you posted

Need a great way to receive critical requests for certain things? Most cell phone carriers have what is called a “sms gateway” that allows e-mails to be sent straight to your phone as a text message. While many of you may know of this, I’m going to share another tip on how to get full use out of this. Let’s say you have five different types of requests and/or notification e-mails. Gmail (Google’s web e-mail) allows you to specify detailed filters to separate each of these e-mails, all going to the same address, into different folders. And the best part, you can forward an e-mail by its filter to another e-mail address, which is where you would use the sms gateway. So, if you have bob for support, chris for server management, and jim for order notifications, each type of e-mail could be forwarded to the correct employee as a text message to their phone. Of course, many medium and larger businesses have systems like this already in place; but some small bus

YouTube meet iPhone
2007-07-10 18:45:40
Just another reason why YouTube needs to have your brand videos all over it! Have you checked out the new iPhone at your local Apple store yet? One of the coolest features of the iPhone is the integrated YouTube video app. Apple has teamed up with YouTube to give iPhone users the ability to search through popular YouTube videos and stream them on the iPhone. This is not done through flash or flv, which is what the YouTube website currently uses, but through another format called H.264. This is not a proprietary format so it is reasonable to assume most future cell phones will include the ability to search and stream YouTube videos as well. I mentioned “popular” videos above because YouTube does not currently have all of their library converted to the format just yet, however they do expect a total conversion and mobile availability of all videos by the fall. If you’re looking for resources on making your video, check out the creating your own videos tutorial.

Facebook or MySpace?
2007-07-10 18:13:18
A constant dilemma for marketers is which social networking site to choose, Facebook or MySpace ? While I’ve mentioned before that both sites should be utilized to their fullest potential, you must ultimately decide which site to spend more time and/or money on. MySpace and Facebook are actually pretty different. MySpace includes several sub-cultures while Facebook is primarily an education-based class. Although Facebook opened its doors to the public to allow anyone to join the website, there still remains a large socio-economic class division between the two sites because of the facebook website’s restrictive beginnings. Facebook was primarily only available to higher education (universities and colleges). After it launched in 2004 as a site for Harvard University students, the site began adding university networks one-by-one. It later opened up to high-schools, and now includes a network for anyone. The restrictive beginnings pushed a safer, more school-oriented network i

Increase views and plays
2007-07-10 17:07:35
Ever seen those programs or services that claim to increase your profile views and/or plays? Do they actually work? The answer is, well, sorta. It really depends on the actual program itself. Overtime, many of these programs have adapted to the implemented code in the MySpace website that detects these scripts and possibly deletes the profiles that use them. Majority of the cheaper versions of these scripts that claim to increase a band’s plays just repost the band’s music player in a high-traffic area on the web. MySpace warned against this several times and actually made it so the usual method of copying the music player would no longer work. Under the tutorial section of this site, you will find how to copy your own music player for educational use! Remember, it’s possible MySpace could detect abuse and delete your account or limit its uses. Simple methods of avoiding detection are described in the MySpace Marketing book. Another cheap method of inflating profile v

Usage Research
2007-06-30 21:13:40
Two great studies done by Parks Associates give us a little inside information on our individual social networking website user… Social Networking Sites and Popular Activities Social networking consumers have exposed their desire to use more than just one social networking website. The research done with Parks Associates shows that 45% of social networking site users in the US use more than one network; 16% are using 3 or more! It also goes on to show that 10% of internet households use social networking websites daily and 8% of them read blogs daily. Multimedia activities (watching videos, posting photos, etc.) also maintain a high share around 4%. As a marketer, this information tell us three important things: Social Networking is getting bigger and is definitely here to stay It’s better to have a profile on many social networking sites In addition to having a profile, you should maintain a blog and lots of multimedia Thanks to Mashable.com for the lead.

Yahoo - MySpace trade?
2007-06-25 02:38:25
Rupert Murdoch is offering the MySpace site to Yahoo for a minority portion (25%) of the Yahoo stock. Certainly, having MySpace.com on its side would benefit Yahoo in obtaining more traffic and loyalty to its search engine and other services that compete with Google, but many question if the two giants could pull it off. There’s no doubt Yahoo could improve the MySpace service and integrate more features with better networking abilities similar to Facebook.com. However, whether or not Yahoo can actually funnel the site’s users to its existing services and increase the usage of those services is still in question. Certainly, on a MySpace marketing standpoint, the trade would be great news. Not only would there be more features and traffic, but the trade would offer businesses more security and users. MySpace competitors would begin to lose traffic to MySpace because Yahoo would probably direct its business services and advertising methods through to the social networking gia

Ironically Increase MySpace Plays
2007-08-10 01:23:10
Have you heard of increasing MySpace plays? Not necessarily inflating the plays, but increasing them! Most bands figured out how to do this pretty easily and MySpace retaliated quickly. What they did was re-post their music player in other places to that more people could hear their music. It’s a pretty good idea allowing more people to listen to the music all over the internet and other places of MySpace they wouldn’t have been. The reason MySpace didn’t like it was because MySpace wanted to keep all the hits on their own website, allowing for more advertising revenue. The way MySpace fought back is they blocked the player from being re-posted in any other spot and sent out bulletins basically saying “don’t do that!” Now, you can’t really blame MySpace for wanting to keep their stuff on their own site, especially since every time you post it somewhere else (a different website) MySpace is actually losing money because it takes from their bandwidth. Ironically though, MyS

Facebook Messaging Tactic
2007-08-14 23:50:13
If you’re needing to message all of your friends on Facebook , doing it manually is likely to take a lot of your time and get you deleted! Facebook is extremely strict about promoting on their network so you need to find creative and efficient ways around things to get your word out using their tools. I’ve created a past blog about limits you should take when promoting on the Facebook website here. The best way to message all of your friends on Facebook is the “through-event” tactic explained here: Create a fake event under your profile. The information doesn’t really matter much, but it’s best to create something most people won’t deny so you have a longer period to message them, like a birthday party that’s months away. The picture of the event should be a photo of a person, most likely your own profile picture for best penetration. (This is realy important) Using an attractive, but BELIEVABLE photo could also help. (half-naked model g

The Social Transformation
2007-08-20 00:17:48
Did you know that Facebook has 30 million active users? Their internal search engine is the most used people search engine on the web with 600 million searches a month! (Facebook.com - Aditya Agarwal) I’ve mentioned it before - not only should your business have a strong presence on MySpace, but start checking out Facebook too! Facebook has recently launched their iPhone mobile site, iphone.facebook.com, which allows iPhone users to explore the Facebook website wherever they are. MySpace has opened similar mobile sites, such as their exclusive agreement with Helio, allowing users with a Helio phone to surf a specially made Myspace site, integrating all their favorite features, and even allowing for pictures or video to be uploaded straight from the phone! This is only the beginning of the mobile-digital world and it’s sure to be the future. The question you should be asking yourself is “how can my company take advantage of this?” Entertainment is the key when br

Facebook Music for Bands
2007-08-17 17:58:03
Is your band’s music on Facebook yet? There’s only one correct way to put your music on Facebook, and that’s through the iLike widget. There’s currently many applications that allow bands to upload their music and post it on their profile, but iLike is the only app that has over 6 million users! The current process for bands to upload their music into iLike for Facebook isn’t the simplest of all methods, but for the extreme viral capabilities that this application has, it’s totally worth it! Here’s what you have to do: Get a free account on Garageband.com and upload your music Next you need to install the iLike sidebar widget. Once your music goes through on Garageband, load and play it through the iLike sidebar widget. Add the iLike application now to your Facebook profile and search for your band! Once you’ve added your music, make sure you tell all your friends about your music and talk them into putting it on their profiles as well

MySpace Bot Programs - Profile Deletion
2007-08-24 00:09:35
Thinking about using Myspace bot programs for your band or business’ profile? You should probably read this! Bots can be a very useful tool for marketing with MySpace , but they can also get you deleted and destroy your band… My sister-in-law’s boyfriend was in a grunge/alternative rock band called “Reason.” In May he said they had just over 14,000 friends on Myspace after being on there for a couple years. Now, that isn’t much compared to some bands I used to work with, but not bad considering they never requested anyone to be their friend – these were all people requesting them. Anyways, they started using bots in May, not excessively, but apparently it was enough to get them deleted. They were up to about 19,000 friends near the end of June when they got deleted and lost everyone! Luckily, they weren’t touring or taking it too seriously, but that pretty much ended what they had going there. I know what you guys are thinking, why didn’t I tell them how to use bots th

MySpace Friend Adder Bots Exposed!
2007-08-23 04:06:16
MySpace bots and adder tools have been a really popular subject in recent times and actually a very interesting development in social networking if you know some of the dirty secrets and history behind all the bull shit. Let me explain… We start off with FriendBot, formerly known as MySpaceBot (2002), the first friend adder bot for MySpace. Once they started advertising their services, other programmers realized the potential revenue this had and bots started popping up everywhere. One of the marketing industry favorites was Space Station, made by BotTower. Space Station was an easy-to-use bot that included all the favorite features and some new ones, like “time delay.” The time delay feature came out when MySpace started to delete accounts for using bots, adders, and automation. Programmers, of course, had no problem catching on to the methods MySpace was using for detection, such as the time delay factor between actions, and created their own methods of disguising the automatio

MySpace and the Ironic Spam Slam
2007-08-21 02:09:45
The MySpace spam roller coaster has been an interesting ride, but will it ever end? The MySpace PR channel, “Tom,” has been ironically “slamming” spam in its messages sent to MySpace users because of the burdensome tactics the company feels it’s forced to implement in fighting spam. It’s ironic because, although the MySpace website has more users than any other social networking website, many of its numbers are quite inflated by automation tools such as bots and adders; and that’s interesting because inflated numbers for MySpace equals more ad revenue for MySpace. The problem is, its rigorous tactics to ward off the spam only: Make the company less money by decreasing “hits” Cost the company more money by increasing labor and hardware Aggravate the users It’s evident that phished accounts – accounts that have had the user name and password stolen in efforts to spam the friends of the account – are nothing short of bad user experiences either, bu

Marketing on Myspace with Classifieds
2007-09-06 19:33:32
Newspaper classified ads are great… if you’re targeting age 50+. Free online classified websites are where you need to be now, and there are tons of them! MySpace marketers can take full advantage of the MySpace classified ads section and open up new possibilities and networks for free. At a quick glance, one will notice there are many categories throughout the MySpace Classifieds, and each city has its own page. The key to using the Classifieds effectively is to find where your target will be! If you’re targeting video gamers, post an ad under the for sale section in “video games.” If you’re targeting a general audience, package your product/service differently so you can target individual and niche areas. For example, if you’re selling some awesome rock music, you could post in the For Sale section of “bicycles,” do you know how? Check out the MP3 Player that hooks on to your bike so you can listen to awesome tunes like [insert your band here]. Cool huh? If you sp

New social networks for marketing forum
2007-09-23 22:41:40
I’ve mentioned it before – how important it is to be marketing on other social networking websites in addition to MySpace. Well, in order to provide forum users with an insightful experience, I’ve opened up some new sections on our MySpace marketing forums. Here are the new networks we will start talking about: Friendster Yahoo Mash Bebo Orkut Hi5 These are, of course, in addition to our current popular marketing sites – MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube. MySpace marketing is obviously the most popular, but marketing on Facebook and YouTube has increased significantly in the past 6 months. There are now bots for all three of these networks and I’m sure there will be more future developments to come. If you’re new to the site, take a look around at the marketing resources and if you’re interested in a forum membership, pick-up a copy of the myspace marketing book to obtain your free access to our social networking marketing forum.

All Your Div Are Belong to Us!
2007-12-06 14:44:37
Generally, “MySpaces” are fugly. We all know it, and many have chosen to not even use the site because of its poor aesthetics, messy functionality, and copy-cat approaches to usability and development. While most of that cannot be changed, one site has developed a method to “hack” users’ profiles for them and install something a little less harmful on the eyes with a multiplitude of divs. Call it a kind of hack-my-profile-and-make-it-cleaner generator, or as they call it, a “Rubbur” layout. I always find it somewhat funny how MySpace has to be hacked in order for it to look pretty, but when considering what’s actually happening there, this “hacking” is probably what delivered the site its success in the first place, ironically enough. Most websites are made to be pretty from the start, but the MySpace approach – make it ugly so they make it pretty – seems to have worked well for them, by mistake or not, and continues to work as a type of virtual scrap book proj
