Country Star Luke Bryan Honored
2007-08-06 11:26:43
BMI’s Nashville office recently honored Luke Bryan , country music artist and co-writer of Billy Currington’s recent No. 1 single, “Good Directions.” The food and decorations were  inspired by the song. Staying with the theme of the song’s title Bryan was presented with a GPS as a gift. Guests ate tomato appetizers, miniature hamburgers, salsa and chips, and most importantly Moon Pies. They could make their own Coke and root beer floats. There was sweet tea to drink.  Red-and-white checked tablecloths held zinnias arranged in large green cans with the labels still on. Bryan is a Leesburg, Georgia native.  He wrote the popular song, “All My Friends Say.” The song is about a night he can’t remember.  His friends say he started to drink when he saw his ex walk through the door. Bryan recounted how his family was skeptical of his career since he was part of their family business. He took time off his career to manage it. They sell fertiliz

The Definition of Hip Hop Music
2007-08-06 10:59:46
Professor Griff - a member of Public Enemy is trying to save hip hop. He thinks there is a war going on to stop it. Most interesting is what he defines as the four fundamentals of hip-hop. They are: MCing, DJing, graffiti and breakdancing. He says, if it doesn’t include those elements it doesn’t qualify. He’s not a fan of the lyrics that are full of criminal references, porn, violence, and disrespect for women. He speaks passionately about how women are degraded to make money. He’s speaking out on other topics relating to hip hop music. Like why so many hip-hop artists get arrested (I’d like to hear that), and most interestingly how Islam has influenced hip-hop. I wish there was a YouTube video or a podcast of the lecture he’s giving tonight. Public Enemy is known for classic hip hop and their work is influenced by Islam.  They are more political than they are vulgar or crass (reminds me of Brother Ali actually). Here’s some interesting trivia

Lollapalooza: Great Music for Good Causes
2007-08-06 10:50:18
Lollapalooza, the three-day extravaganza that ended Sunday was almost rained out. The show was on Chicago’s lakefront. 130 bands hit the stages to perform for thousands. It’s one of the best festivals of the year that was started by former Jane’s addiction singer Perry Farrell. On Saturday things were going smooth. Chicago rapper Rhymefest performed. So did New York City punk icon Patti Smith. She had a bit to say to the crowd and sang Kurt Cobain’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. But she changed the lyrics from apathy to a wake up call. Roky Erickson sang hippie rock from the 1960’s. Interpol and Muse also performed. The indie dance band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah got people dancing. The Roots, a hybrid hip-hop group and rock band included some rapping. It sounds fun as indie bands from all over the world took the stage. There was also a good cause: the proceeds go to fund neighborhood park projects. Last year Lollapalooza raised more than $928,000 for parkways.

Music Helps Austistic Child Focus
2007-08-06 10:17:43
Amanda Markham is autistic and that means it can be hard for to concentrate. But at Music Therapy Services of Waukesha County, music affects her and she can focus. Amanda is 5 years old and she sings and listens to music with a music therapist. Music therapists help improve moods, maintain health, and facilitates communication. Children and adults with disabilities like autism are increasing their cognitive skills, self-awareness and physical functions. It’s not a passive therapy in which people just listen to music. Instead they may create music by playing an instrument. Or they may sing, or actively move and do other things while they listen to music (you can sample free music on our site). With music, people have learned math skills. They have improved coordination and rhythm. Music stimulates many parts of the brain all at one time. It can make otherwise tedious things fun. It helps alleviate fear and brings calm. I have a massage therapist who uses music in her massage techn

No Promises for the Future
2007-08-03 11:55:10
If you type in Elvis Presley on Wikipedia you’ll go straight to the page about him. However, most people don’t know that there is also a comprehensive list of Elvis songs. Elvis sang many covers of other’s songs. The song “Until It’s Time for You to Go.”  The song reached #40 on the charts when Elvis Presley sang it in 1972. Other artists like Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis, Willie Nelson, and Barbra Streisand have also recorded it. It’s a tad sad, talking about a love that may not last or be long-term but just for now - until it’s time to go. So the message is: appreciate the moment without expectations for the future. It was written by Native American hippie woman Buffy Sainte-Marie — a 60s legend in her own right.  Janis Joplin, Tracy Chapman and The Boston Pops Orchestra are others who recorded the song. Elvis - She Wears my Ring
2007-08-03 11:32:28
After the story about the death of a rapper and the way he proposed to his fiance, I decided to review Elivs Presley’s favorite: She Wears My Ring. It’s a much-loved love song and it’s often chosen for weddings. It was released in 1974 and it says, “With loving care I placed it on her finger to show my love for all the world to see.” The song is a music download about a wedding ring as a way to show devotion. It was written by Boudleaux Bryant and Felice Bryant. Felice was a poet at heart with a natural gift for writing songs. Boudleaux was a musician and they were one of the most successful writing teams in modern music. This song was covered by many, including Johnny Clarke, Solomon King, Roy Orbison, Ray Price, Hank Snow, and Delroy Wilson. I picture a Las Vegas wedding. This marriage capital of the world loved and still does love Elvis . Perhaps he lives on there more than anywhere else besides Graceland.

Colorado Police Single Out Hip Hop
2007-08-03 11:15:53
Colorado Springs is cracking down on guns, gangs and drugs - specifically when associated with hip hop concerts and venues. Colorado Springs has a growing hip-hop scene. And the venues for the music are becoming dangerous. It’s also a scene of criminal activity. People are being warned about Eden Nightclub’s “Pimp, Thug, and Ho” costume party. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette: “Within this genre of music, there are artists that glorify criminal behaviors with a style of music commonly called ‘Gangsta Rap.’” They are specifically looking for people who are into hip hop music. It has something to do with one of 10 homicides in the city that was part of the hip hop scene.  Anthony “Michael” Grimaldo, was killed after a rap concert that turned violent. Others say that hip hop is being singled out. Eden Nightclub canceled their party this year after the attention.

Toby Keith Fans Rate Him #1
2007-08-03 10:14:29
Life is good for country music star Toby Keith . About.com has named him country Entertainer of the Year award. Fans voted on different country singers. Keith fans will not want to miss his tv performance this week. He’s doing and an exclusie interview for A&E’s Private Sessions. It’s going to be shown this Sunday, August 5th. Check local listings for times. Toby recently drew the largest single night crowd in the 30-year history at a country music festival in Morris Town, Ohio. And his new album is doing well. The album is called Big Dog Daddy and it was released in June. The single “High Maintenance Woman” has been rising on the charts. It was also rated high with About.com voters. The song is about a woman he’s attracted to. She’s high maintenance (which sometimes is another way to say her standards are high). He worries he’s out of her league because he’s a different kind of mainteance - a maintenance man.

Paperboy May Get Plea Deal
2007-08-09 11:38:32
Paperboy has been delivering more than just rap music. A California Deputy District Attorney - Steven Slocum said his office is considering a plea deal for rapper Mitchell Charles Johnson, who is known as “Paperboy.” The 34 year old who was arrested June 13 by Merced police for alleged marijuana possession. Johnson was pulled over in his black 1990 Honda. His car was searched and he was arrested. He got a misdemeanor charge for transporting marijuana and a felony charge on possession of marijuana for sale. He could get a maximum of three years in prison if convicted. Or, alternatively, he could be sentenced to probation. Paperboy is best known for his hip hop music single Ditty, released in the 1990s. His other albums didn’t sell as well and some say he burned through his money (hence, the pot sales). I hate to say it but it’s not exactly what I’d hoped to be caught in if I were a gansta rap star. A 1990 Honda. I hope the wheels were pimped out.

Fiancé Steals Tanya Tucker’s Clothes
2007-08-08 12:03:30
I guess this means no marriage (or so I hope). I wrote about how one fiance is grieving over a death and the moving way he proposed to her. This story is in stark contrast. Las Vegas police arrested the former fiance of country singer Tanya Tucker recently. They were driving across the country and he drove off with her clothes and jewelry. His name is Jerry Laseter and they were on their way to perform in Las Vegas. He drove the U-Haul full of $500,000 worth of her wardrobe and jewelry. This is the funny part: Tucker said she’d give him money and two tickets back to Nashville for returning her things. He emptied the truck and abandoned it at a Las Vegas casino. One thing was left: a note. It said: “When you are trying to get someone over a barrel, make sure you got a strong barrel.” It was punctuated with an expletive. He didn’t act alone - there was another woman. Tucker got her things back. I hope she didn’t invite him to the concert but they couldn&rsq

Jazzy I Can’t Remember to Forget
2007-08-08 11:46:21
I Can’t Remember to Forget by Charlie Barnet is one of our music downloads today. It’s a jazz rendition of the oft-covered song. Charlie Barnet led what was known as “The Blackest White Band Of Them All.” He was an American jazz saxophonist and bandleader who was born in New York City. He was one of the first bandleaders to integrate his band - he had both Black and white members. He loved jazz greats Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Barnet was most popular between 1939 and 1941. In actually retired at age 26! His family was wealthy so he didn’t need to support himself. They wanted him to become a lawyer but he became a musician. He was married several times (at least six and some say eleven). Barnet was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1984.

Holy Hip Hop Takes the Streets
2007-08-08 11:32:09
Gospel hip hop music, Jesus rappers, or holdy what is sometimes referred to as holy hip hop isn’t new. In fact, it’s 20 years old. But it still struggles to find an audience with churches or with hip hop. With all the contraversy lately, it may be exactly what hip hop needs. Preachers are hoping hip hop music with a gospel message to reach local youth and get them involved in church. Youth in big cities speak another language. This is how they can relate. Gangs, drugs, sex, it’s all still a part of the mix. But this mix also has Jesus Christ and salvation thrown in. It’s adding some more positive lyrics and messages, hoping to improve people’s lives and perhaps help people want to turn around their lives. The good part of this mix is that the influence may help keep cities safer. It offers some hope that youth can change their ways. It’s definately a soft sell. God loves you. Jesus Christ - yo. I don’t think you’re going to find anyone no

Elvis Goings On
2007-08-08 09:53:22
Here’s a quote by Elivs about the way he danced: “The first time that I appeared on stage, it scared me to death. I really didn’t know what all the yelling was about. I didn’t realize that my body was moving. It’s a natural thing to me. So to the manager backstage I said ‘What’d I do? What’d I do?’ And he said ‘Whatever it is, go back and do it again.’” Bring back Elvis with these goings on: On August 16th Graceland will get a new visitor center, hotel and exhibition facilities a new life-sized Elvis statue is going up in Honolulu, Hawaii Carnival Cruises is planning a commemorative “Elvis Cruise” Sirius radio’s Elvis station will play special Elvis programming And now you need — an Elvis tin! There are two commemorative tins, one has 3 CDs that play on almost any karaoke machine. The other is a holiday tin. It has a handpainted keepsake candle that looks like Elvis’s guitar. It also has 32-

Indie Bands Publicize Tours with Blogs
2007-08-08 09:21:15
Two indie rock bands Tokyo Police Club from Canada and Ra Ra Riot from New York are young but determined to make it in the music industry. Both are on tour promoting their first albums. Without even a full album Tokyo Police Club got enough publicity to get a fan base nation wide. Now they have a record company behind their LP coming out next year. Blogs are changing the way things are done in the music industry. The fans know their music and have listened to it online. They are touring together, but with the momentum they have, they will probably be touring on their own before long. Most new bands would have little hope of this much success so soon. Tokyo Police Club and Ra Ra Riot will continue to tour together for the next two weeks, culminating with a performance at Middle East in Cambridge, Mass. Another factor that helps new indie bands is SXSW. SXSW is one of the largest music festivals in the United States. Each March more than 1,400 performers playing dozens of venues around A

Amazon Invests in Indie Music Retailer
2007-08-07 11:35:06
Amazon is one of the first investors in a service called Amie Street. They sell digital music for indie bands. Here’s an interesting business model. You can download a song free at first but the more popular the song gets the more you will pay per download. Up to 98 cents maximum that is. It doesn’t say how much the artists will make. You can earn credits for downloads by recommending songs to other people and getting them to download indie music. The startup is a bit of an indie company themselves. It was founded in 2006 by three Brown University students. Amazon is going to compete with iTunes soon by launching its own music store sometime this year. Well at least you know that indie music downloads on EZ-Tracks are always free. Look at our selection of indie music - and yes, share your favorites with friends!

The Death of Hip Hop’s Overnight Successes?
2007-08-07 11:19:40
There is a lot of talk about the death of hip hop right now. It seems everyone is chiming in. This week it’s rapper 50 CENT. He says he’s worried that he’s the last of a dying breed. He wonders if the record industry can support another hip-hop superstar. Why? because another fact that has been hitting the news recently: record sales. Record sales keep dropping while downloads, ringtones, and singles are becoming the new standard. Without high record sales music companies can’t hand out large contracts that made artists like 50 Cent stars rich overnight. For example, 50 Cent was a mix-tape mastermind who got a multi-millionaire deal. I can see his concern. With less to spend on marketing albums and more focus on one hit at a time that kind of wealth will be less common. Wealth will more likely be built over time rather than over night. Is that so bad though? The problem I see is that songs seem to have a shorter shelf life and artists may go for the next big thi

Free Music Download - Don’t Let me Down
2007-08-07 11:16:18
Don’t Let Me Down - a powerful love song and performed by the RRSO Symphony Orchestra - is one of today’s music downloads. The Beatles made it famous when they released it in 1969. It’s one of the most romantic songs there is. It’s written by John Lennon who was speaking to Yoko Ono. Here is some trivia about the song: Marcia Griffiths did a reggae version of the song Phoebe Snow covered this song in her album Looks Like Snow The Pretenders once did a live cover of the song Annie Lennox had a live version on Coldest Maroon 5 played the song at a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina and on The Howard Stern Show last year Matchbox Twenty covered the song on Last Call with Carson Daly. Rappers Death Blamed on Jealousy
2007-08-10 11:48:44
On June 30, 2007 the rapper Michael “Trick” George, just 25 years old, was shot in the head and chest as he got out of his car. His funeral was held last week.  His finance was the first to find him. There has been a lot of violence in his east Toronto neighbourhood and George wasn’t the first to die as a result. So far, the killer hasn’t been found. George performed hip hop music with the band LowLife. 13 white doves were released after the funeral that was held at Westney Heights Baptist Church. Jason “Omega” Daley, also a part of the band Lowlife, says he’ll write a song to reflect his anger and feelings about his friend’s death. His fiance Chanel Chambers told how George proposed to her last Christmas. She woke up one morning to find a beautiful wedding ring on her finger. How romantic and how tragic.

Music Therapy Research
2007-08-16 09:05:46
Music is a sound energy and sound affects everything around it - including you. You know that police use loud aggetating music to get criminals to end standoffs. Loud and cacophonic sounds can disturb you, just as how soothing music can have beneficial effects. Listen to the mantras and chants of the Vedas and you’ll see what I mean. In ancient India there were Ragas specifically meant to bring immense peace to both the mind and the body. “For instance, raga ‘Shankhadhani’ has the power to refresh; ‘Bhairavi’ encourages detachment while ‘Yaman’ creates serenity.” A psychiatrist named Dr Shyam Lulla, says music can help everyone. How? Music can help lower blood pressure, heart rate and pulse rate.  Deforia Lane, Ph D, director of music therapy for University Hospitals Health System in Cleveland and associate director of the Ireland Cancer Center, vouches for how music can heal. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and listened to Beethoven,

Ella Fitzgerald back on the Charts
2007-08-15 10:15:03
Here’s another music icon who keeps going up on the charts even after her death. Jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald is back on the U.S. pop album charts for the first time in almost 38 years. “Love Letters from Ella” debuted at No. 97 on the Billboard 200 last week. It also entered the Top Jazz Albumstally at No. 2, behind Michael Buble’s “Call Me Irresponsible.” Fitzgerald is a much-loved jazz singer, a classic. She died in 1996. In 1969 “Ella” peaked at No. 196. The new CD was released through a partnership between Concord Jazz and Starbucks. It’s her highest-ranked title since “Ella and Basie!” went to No. 69 in 1963. On the Top Jazz Albums tally, “Love Letters from Ella” ties the peak position of the “Best of Song Book Collections” CD in July 1996 as the highest-charting Ella titles since “Ella in Rome - The Birthday Concert” ruled for five weeks the summer of 1988. The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash Play Texas
2007-08-15 01:48:12
“Walk Alone and Distance Between, that built a hardcore fanbase for the band and yet achieved a critical recognition that most singer-songwriters would slit their left wrist to gain. It was an enviable position, as long as you didn’t have to do all the work that went with it.” - Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash biography Just those few lines make me want to head to Texas to hear this band with the quirky name! Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash are a touring band and they’re all over Texas this month. They played at a pub there Monday, so I missed it. The story goes that this band was started because of a dream. Mark Stuart drempt up the name, which became a joke, and then became a country music band. Amazing enough, that band was not a joke. Johnny Cash liked them and his son helped produce the album. (Whoever wrote this biography is an amazing writer). Stuart says his band came like a calling. I’m already a fan. The other members of the 5 member band are Vance Haze

Utah Indie Band Gets Most Votes
2007-08-14 11:36:53
Salt Lake City, Utah indie band The Brobecks have been voted Indie Artist of the Month on indie music site SessionSound recently. Their latest album is called “Goodnight, and Have a Pleasant Tomorrow.” Fans could go and vote for their favorite indie bands. They won $1000 for getting the most votes. The Brobecks are doing well. It has grown by 4 times in the month of July. The music is quirky and fun, even with sinister lyrics. Their song, Goodnight Socialite says, “I’ve got your knife inside my back, I’ve got your rope around my neck…if I can’t have you then no one can.” But they make it sound playful (reminds me of the Housemartins). “The Brobecks are four guys with great music tastes playing some great music. Their generally fun sound can be compared to The Strokes, Weezer, or The French Kicks, while their creative output is comparable to acts such as The Flaming Lips or Radiohead, especially in the way the keyboards are incorpo
