A Letter From Grandpa
2007-10-18 14:33:21
I got home yesterday to find a letter from my grandpa had arrived. I was thrilled. We live in an age when hand written communication is going by the wayside. We call, we fax, we e-mail, we instant message, and we text message. We hardly ever sit down and actually write out, in longhand, what we want to say… and then to follow that up with taking the time to put it in an envelope, address it, put a stamp on it, and mail it. Unheard of. So grandpa… thanks. I loved getting a letter from you. And, I had no trouble reading it either, as you had imagined I might. In fact, I read it aloud to Karen as she made dinner last night. It was fantastic. Getting the letter made me think about my grandfather… and there’s so much I could say about him. Like, I wonder if he knows he’s the axis at the center of things in our family. I wonder if he realizes he’s where we all get our incredible sense of what’s right, our wonderful sense of play, and our good hear

Sunday Morning
2007-10-21 11:49:51
IMG_4122.JPG Originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl I was sitting here perusing various sites on the net, quietly doing that and looking around the house and out the window. Karen and Weston were still sleeping for a bit. I was sitting in our corner chair, the big comfy one, and I started taking some pictures from that vantage point. I’ll include a couple of those here. This shot happened after Karen and Weston got up and she took Weston outside to “do his business”. Right before this shot Weston was wandering around the living room, just after getting up, sniffing here and there. It was a close one actually, we got him outside just in time. So go the details of our daily life. Right now Karen’s eating a bowl of cereal talking to Mary on the phone, Weston is pulling toys out of his toy box, and I’m typing away. In a few minutes we’ll get up, change into our workout stuff, and head to the racket club to play some tennis. I’d say that so f

Finally, IT Happened
2007-10-26 21:27:14
We were making dinner tonight (orange sesame chicken, cheddar garlic mashed potatoes, steamed carrots and cauliflower, and green beans), and while we were in the process we were also unloading the dishwasher and washing the dishes/loading the dishwasher. Suddenly Karen says to me, hey, you know something that annoys me… it annoys me when someone loads a jar into the dishwasher with the label still on… because THIS happens (she picked up the glass lid to a dish that had dried stuck paper on the back of it that had come from the aforementioned label). I stood there in shock. I mean, it’s the first time she’s ever said anything I do annoys her. All the time we’ve been together I’ve tried to get her to pin point something about my behavior that annoys her. She’s always said… nope… there’s nothing. And I’ve argued that although I know I’m peachy to live with, there has had to be something. Anything. To which

I was perusing the flickr pages early this morning, like 6ish or so, and stumbled across the photos of a guy who calls himself crack jackson jr.  If you get a chance, go check out his images.  His perspective and his eye for the shot are pretty incredible.

Kid In Disguise
2007-10-25 16:16:58
Sometimes, believe it or not, I revert back to being a kid. Or at least, I have kid moments. I’m no longer embarrassed by them because, you know, they just happen. Probably, I think, for everyone. My latest, which occurred last night, was by far one of the most hilarious I’ve had. Here’s the story… I picked Karen up from the airport last night, she flew in from her latest business trip, and then we met my brother, Kevin, for dinner at Pastini. Dinner was lovely, and tasty. Thanks Kev for the lovely company and for picking up the tab, you are a scholar and a gentleman. The meal passed without incident and afterward we walked our separate ways to our respective vehicles. Ours was parked right in front of the restaurant, but Kev had to walk a couple of blocks down to his. We took off… Karen and I got to a red light a ways down the road and a car pulled up next to us, but a bit behind us. We thought it was Kev, even though we couldn’t really

A Cup O’ Joe
2007-10-25 14:23:51
I was enjoying my almost daily tasty cup of chai this morning, purchased today at Starbucks, and as I was sipping I read the “The Way I See It” quote #247 on the back of my cup, which was this… Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure.” - Bill Scheel, Starbucks customer from London, Ontario. He describes himself as a “modern day nobody”. After reading this quote I actually got online a bit later and went to the Starbucks “The Way I See It” section of their webpage. While there I found some really good quotes. I’m going to include a couple of those here. If you’re into this sort of thing and interested in reading more, click the link above. You might

Will this work day ever be over?  I mean, c’mon… it’s gorgeous outside.  It hasn’t been gorgeous for quite some time.  I want to be out in it, not here, looking at it.  Some afternoons during the work week are just hard to take.

Coming Home
2007-10-23 12:46:57
Karen’s away right now, on business. She left yesterday, and life just isn’t the same without her. I’m always sad when she goes. I know, this time anyway, it’s only for a couple of nights, but that doesn’t seem to matter much. The missing her is the same…. strong. Intense. Things just aren’t quite right when we’re away from each other. I never thought I’d be a person who counted on someone so much, or felt so connected to someone, as I do with her. It’s strange and incredible. I quite like it actually. And for a person who’s been pretty independent, depending on someone, well that’s an unusual thing. Thinking about her, about us, makes me consider the nature of relationships, or at least of my view of them. What does it mean… to be in a relationship, to be a couple… connected. I guess, for me, it means thinking of that other person before yourself, wanting to make sure they are OK, or happy,

Droplets Originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl It’s beautiful outside today. Nice blue sky, crisp air, wonderful light. All the leaves are falling and the flowers are mostly gone, but it’s so pretty outside I had to share one more flower picture from the year. We do still have a few blooms at the house, so there may be a couple more shots after this one… but,  it’s getting close to the end of the season, so here it is…

There are all sorts of things I can do with it. Pretty cool. I was wandering around looking for things to take pictures of at mom’s and as I was, everyone else was wondering why the heck I was taking what I was taking. I guess it looked pretty strange. Ah well… that’s me. Not your average normal kind of girl I guess.

Driving To Salem

Driving To Salem Originally uploaded by Tokenhippygirl Photo by Karen Yesterday, October 27, 2007, we drove to Salem to take mom her annual treat of brownies and mocha almond fudge ice cream. I’ve done this every year for 9 years. It’s the yearly anniversary celebration of the date mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Why that date you ask? Because that’s the day life changed, and I like to help mom celebrate that here we are, 9 years later, and she’s OK… life is good. I love you mom.
