SING IF YOU'RE GLAD TO BE GAY #2
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Tom Robinson Band first came to my attention in 1977 when '2-4-6-8 Motorway' crashed into the charts. Their second release was the 'Rising Free' EP released in February 1978, it featured the classic 'Sing If You're Glad To Be Gay' which was originally written for Gay Pride in 1976. London station Capital Radio voted it No.1 on their Listeners' Hitline for six consecutive weeks. The EP featured other gems like 'Martin' and 'Don't Take No For An Answer' which was Radio 1's choice. I was 12 when I bought this and was well aware I was attracted to my own gender. I'd grown up with popstars declaring their bisexuality during the glam rock era, but it was so refreshing to hear someone singing about gay rights. The lyrics condemned the homophobia of the press and the police and also admonished gay people for their apathy. 'Sing If You're Glad To Be Gay' is THE 'gay' anthem. This original version is very 1970's so parts aren't as relevant as they were back then, but To

McFLY - TRANSYLVANIA
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I've been listening to the new McFly album 'Motion In The Ocean' lately and have fallen for one track big time. Some of you may turn your nose up at a bit of McFly, but there's nothing like a good pop song and these boys know how to make plenty of those. Another plus is the 10CC vibe going on in this tune. Oh yeah, and they're cute as hell too.Transylvania

NINA HAGEN and AUTOMOBIL

One of Nina Hagen's first recordings was from 1974 when she was in the band Automobil.Very little info seems to be around for this period, so just listen to the song.'Du Hast Den Farbfilm Vergessen'

THE REZILLOS - BALLROOM BLITZ
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Following the Steve Bronski exclusive Rezillos tune, I thought I'd dig out this Rezillos cover. Here they are performing 'Ballroom Blitz', the Sweet classic from 1973. This Rezillos recording is from a live gig at Glasgow Apollo in 1978.BALLROOM BLITZand check out Germans Under Cover, a great blog featuring four German covers of early Sweet singles.

THE BEATLES - LOVE
1970-01-01 00:59:59
After being asked by the remaining Beatles, Ringo and Paul, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, to make experimental mixes from their master tapes for a collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, Sir George Martin (The Beatles legendary producer) and his son Giles Martin have been working with the entire archive of Beatles recordings to create LOVE. The result is an unprecedented approach to the music. Using the master tapes at Abbey Road Studios, Sir George and Giles have created a unique soundscape. The release of this album, which is also featured in the Cirque du Soleil/Beatles collaborative production of the same name at The Mirage in Las Vegas, has been much anticipated."This album puts the Beatles back together again, because suddenly there's Johnand George with me and Ringo", said Paul McCartney. "It's kind of magical.""George and Giles did such a great job combining these tracks. It's reallypowerful for me and I even heard things I'd forgotten we'd recorded". commen

BORAT:the movie
1970-01-01 00:59:59
BORAT (fox)Release Date: November 3, 2006Director: Larry CharlesCast: Sacha Baron CohenAn extremely funny yet offensive movie that will likely have certain parties up in arms, including actual Kazakhstanis (who are apparently fighting against the release of the movie), Jewish people, women and pretty much anyone else who's offended by male nudity, inappropriate sexual insinuations and behavior, and the making fun of other cultures. For anyone who doesn't know the background of the lead character in this film, played by actor Sasha Baron Cohen (he's Jewish in real-life, by the way), he's an ongoing character on his TV show, along with his more popular alter-persona, Ali G. Part of Borat's appeal is that he's so ignorant of American culture, that he can say and do the most outrageous things in front of actual people (who aren't "in on the joke") and get away with it because most Americans are polite and try to teach him about his wrongdoings, rather than tell him off fo

BOY GEORGE with DARK GLOBE
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Fresh from sweeping the streets of New York, Boy George is back doing what he does best. He's just collaborated with Dark Globe on their CD 'Nostalgia For The Future'. The album features a range of different vocalists, including Amanda Ghost, Julie Thompson and Tom Verlaine. Boy George can be heard on the moody and brooding track 'Atoms' and there's also a remix on the limited edition double CD.AtomsAtoms (Ben Castle Tribute Band Pre-Mix)some Culture Club remixes here and there.

ABBA AUSSIE TV ADS
1970-01-01 00:59:59
These two ads were filmed in Australia and broadcast on Australian commercial TV networks in the late 1970s. National was the business name that Panasonic traded under in Australia until the early 1980s. Panasonic scored a great coup to engage ABBA and use Fernando for this campaign. ABBA were huge in Australia, probably even bigger than The Beatles. Fernando stayed at #1 on the Australian charts for months after it was released.tv ad #1tv ad #2MORE VINTAGE MUSIC TV

BLUR'S BANKSY SOLD
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The original art work for Blur's "Think Tank" album has been sold for almost £65,000 at auction. Designed by infamous graffiti artist Banksy, the piece went for ten times its estimated price at Bonhams auction house in London this week. The value of Banksy's art has shot up to a staggering degree recently, after Angelina Jolie bought a number of his works and he was featured in a high-profile exhibition in Los Angeles. The anonymous buyer, who paid £62,400 for the piece commented: "I'm delighted to purchase this particular work from the Think Tank group of works by Banksy."This work will remain in a private collection of Pop Art here in England".Damon Albarn's new band The Good The Bad And The Queen play the Roundhouse in London tonight. Here's a collection of my favourite images.View the slideshow

HOT CHOCOLATE BAND-GIVE PEACE A CHANCE
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In 1969 vocalist Errol Brown and bassist Tony Wilson formed the beginnings of what would become Hot Chocolate whilst living in West Hampstead, London. Errol Brown said "Tony Wilson knew a group of musicians in Brixton who were invited to go into the studio to 'reggae-fy' some popular songs of the day. Those musicians included Patrick Olive (percussion), Franklyn De Allie (guitar) and Ian King (drums). They made their first recordings in 1969 with former Shadows drummer Tony Meehan as producer...a reggae version of John Lennon's 'Give Peace A Chance' was to be Hot Chocolate's debut single. Errol Brown says 'we were so naive in the music business that we didn't realise you needed the songwriter's permisssion to change lyrics'. A copy of the track was sent to Lennon who, fortunately, gave it his seal of approval. That first single was issued on the Beatles own Apple label in October 1969 and (despite what the sleeve says) was issued under the name of the Hot Chocolate Band.Hot Ch

AMY WINEHOUSE-YOU KNOW I'M NO GOOD
1970-01-01 00:59:59
THE FIRST GREAT SINGLE OF 2007British geezer-bird Amy Winehouse has been going from strength to strength over the past couple of years. Arriving with the phenomenal album 'Frank' in 2003, she represented just the right mixture of alternative jazz, soul, and pop to be an underground hit. Now fully propelled into the mainstream with new album 'Back To Black', she's surely gonna have her biggest hit by far.One thing that is so likeable about Amy Winehouse is that she is not a media darling. Softly lamenting "I told you I was trouble" on the new single 'You Know I'm No Good', she is, in effect, refusing to apologise to the self-appointed preservers of morality (otherwise known as the press) for her stints in rehab and her general bad behaviour. And I love her for it. Such a shame she's not a dyke.Easily one of the most talented British singers performing today, Amy's soulful and meandering voice has a timeless quality to it.The single itself is classic Amy. She doesn't unleash t

RAPED-PRETTY PAEDOPHILES E.P.
1970-01-01 00:59:59
RAPED-PRETTY PAEDOPHILES E.P.The Daily Mirror described them as sick. Melody Maker called them worthless and Record Mirror urged their readers not to buy the single. These boys did everything they could to ensure that they got nowhere while gaining massive publicity. From the band name to the names of their songs and their image these boys pissed people off. Frequent scams gave them publicity if nothing else. Deliberately playing on their sexuality ( kissing on stage and claiming bisexuality- Sean and Faebhean) they claimed that Faebhean was gay or that he was descended from Aleister Crowley. In mid-'77, when everyone was trying to look like street punks, these 'boys' were dressing like their glam heroes in makeup. Particularly guilty was the Japanese drummer Paddy Fields, who favoured pink and purple and blonde hair, high heels, tights and hot pants which he could probably get away with hiding behind a drum kit.As a result of the negative publicity they changed their name to Cuddly
