SHOWADDYWADDY - HEY MR CHRISTMAS 1970-01-01 00:59:59 IT'S CHRISTMAS #10This tune is one of my all-time christmas favourites, that never gets the airplay it deserves at this time of year. The backing vocals were provided by the children's choir of the Harpenden branch of the National Children's Home. It was only Showaddywaddy's third hit single, and reached number 13 in the UK charts during the christmas of 1974.Showaddywaddy - Hey Mr Christmas
ORDINARY BOYS - LAST CHRISTMAS 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This one isn't part of my 'It's Christmas' posts but I had to include this. The Ordinary Boys have covered Wham's perennial classic 'Last Christmas'. Ordinary Boys - Last Christmas Read more:ORDINARY
THE DICKIES - SILENT NIGHT 1970-01-01 00:59:59 IT'S CHRISTMAS #11Not much to say about this one except it's the best of all the punk christmas tunes. The Dickies rendition of the yuletide classic 'Silent Night' was their first single to chart in the UK. A shame it only reached number 47 back in December 1978.The Dickies - Silent Night

MARC BOLAN & T.REX - CHRISTMAS BOP 1970-01-01 00:59:59 IT'S CHRISTMAS #12Todays choice is another fine festive tune that never gets the airplay it deserves. 'Christmas Bop' was due for single release in December 1975 but that idea was shelved. The single finally saw the light of day some five years after Bolan's death in December 1982. MORRISSEY STEPS BACK INTO THE 70'S 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Today I've found four great seventies tunes covered by Morrissey. The version of 'Redondo Beach' sounds fantastic and comes from a Janice Long radio session. 'Redondo Beach' was one of the stand-out tracks on Patti Smith's debut album 'Horses', released in 1975.Bowie's 'Drive In Saturday' gets a few lyric changes, 'his name was always Ziggy' becomes 'his name was always David'. A reference to the internet is also in there, as well as Morrissey singing 'you don't really like this song do you' to a bemused audience.Morrissey singing a Gilbert O'Sullivan song is indeed a wonderful idea and he covers 'Nothing Rhymed' in superb fashion. This live recording is from the Ambassador in Dublin during his 2002 tour. And finally Morrissey covers Roxy Music's classic 'Street Life'.Morrissey - Redondo BeachMorrissey - Drive In SaturdayMorrissey - Nothing RhymedMorrissey - Street Life Read more:MORRISSEY

DAVID BOWIE - BAAL 1970-01-01 00:59:59 'Baal' was a BBC TV production of the Bertolt Brecht play and starred David Bowie as Baal. It was directed by Alan Clarke and broadcast on 2nd February 1982. 'Baal' also spawned an E.P. of Brecht songs, this highly entertaining and unconventional collection of tunes reached number 29 in the UK charts the following month.David Bowie was perfectly cast in this BBC production of a one-hour version of the play, as the alcoholic, womanizing, murderous itinerant musician/poet title character. Zoe Wanamaker also makes an appearance as one of Baal's girlfriends.01 "Baal's Hymn" 4:0202 "Remembering Marie A" 2:0403 "Ballad Of The Adventurers" 1:5404 "The Drowned Girl" 1:5405 "The Dirty Song" 0:37more bowiescary mash-ups and super mp3s

COLDPLAY - SAFETY E.P. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Recorded at Sync City Studios, London, April 98.Produced by Coldplay and Nikki Rosetti.Released in May 1998.Limited Edition 500 copiesThe Safety EP was initially intended as a demo for the record companies. At a cost of around £200, three songs were recorded over a weekend in Sync City Studios: Bigger Stronger, No More Keeping My Feet On The Ground & Such A Rush.Once finished, all involved were so pleased with it that a commercial release was decided upon. Between band and management, the money was raised for 500 copies to be manufactured and distributed around London. However, most of these copies were given away either to uniformly-underwhelmed record company types or enthusiastic friends and family. By the time any shops were prepared to stack the record, there were only 50 copies left.Eventually though, the EP performed its original purpose. One Debs Wild of (then) Universal Records became enthusiastic and passed it on to Dan Keeling of Parlophone and Caroline Ellery of BMG Pu

TOM TOM CLUB - WORDY RAPPINGHOOD 1970-01-01 00:59:59 WORDY RAPPINGHOODThe Tom Tom Club were Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of 'Talking Heads' fame. They decided on the project when David Byrne and Jerry Harrison embarked on seperate solo records in the early 1980's.'Wordy Rappinghood', their debut single, was a catchy and infectious slice of hip-hop funk and world music polyrhythms. The single was never released in their home territory, but was a huge hit around Europe. In June 1981 'Wordy Rappinghood' entered the UK charts and reached Number 7, spending just over two months on the chart.'Wordy Rappinghood' (Original 12" Version) Read more:TOM TOM
"Miss Rhythm" RUTH BROWN R.I.P. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Ruth Brown with Deborah Harry on the set of 'Hairspray' (pictured left)Ruth Brown, the gutsy rhythm and blues singer whose career extended to acting and crusading for musicians' rights, died last Friday in her Las Vegas home aged 78 . The cause was complications following a heart attack and a stroke suffered after surgery, she had been on life support since October 29th.Ruth Brown sustained a career for six decades, her magnificent voice could "sell" a song (sometimes in spite of the song itself), and with the greatest number of singles issued by a female singer on the Atlantic label, she made trip after trip to the R&B charts. In fact, Atlantic Records was sometimes referred to as "The House That Ruth Built"Then in 1988 she hit the big time again starring in the John Waters movie 'Hairspray' in the memorable role as the disc jockey Motormouth Maybelle.Ruth was born on 30th January 1928 and her funeral will be held this coming Tuesday, 28th November 2006.This Little Read more:Rhythm
THE SWEET - SLOW MOTION 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The Sweet burst onto the UK music scene in early 1971 when 'Funny Funny' gave them their first taste of Top 20 success. However the band had released four singles previously which had sank without trace. The Sweet began life as The Sweet Shop but had shortened it by the time of their debut record release. These first four singles only actually feature vocalist Brian Connolly, the rest of the band were replaced by session musicians. The cheek of it!For the last 30 years I've seen these elusive singles listed in discographies but I'm now proud to be able to say I have them all, thanks to a stunning collection called 'The First Recordings 1968-1971'.So here's the debut single by The Sweet, released 19th July 1968.a.side Slow Motionb.side It's Lonely Out There

THE SLITS - JOHN PEEL SESSION 1981 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The Slits recorded three sessions for John Peel. Peel rated the first two Slits broadcasts among his all-time favorites, however, the third session is even better than either.By 1981 The Slits were now embracing a tribal thud that was so far out on a limb that even Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush had yet to clamber out to join them. This session from October 1981 features Neneh Cherry as backing vocalist on the three tracks. There are lengthy throbs through "In the Beginning" the so-haunting mantra "Earthbeat/Wedding Song" and the aptly titled "Difficult Fun". All are superior to their album versions and reveal just what a fabulous vocalist Ari Up was.Difficult FunIn The BeginningEarthbeat/Wedding Songmore SLITS

PATTI SMITH LIVE AT CBGB's 2006 Part 2 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Here's five more treats from Patti's farewell CBGB's gig on October 15th 2006.Patti can be heard saying "now that cbgbs is closing up i think we got a future as a cover band" as these tracks will prove. Hear Patti totally screw the start of 'My Generation' up and add some new lyrics to this familiar track "i messed up the fucking song, hope i die because of it".Well that's rather harsh but she does of a better job of The Stone's 'Gimme Shelter' and The Dead Boys 'Sonic Reducer'.
