Legendary Distance Runners Countdown
2007-08-05 16:26:00
After completing a promising number of laps in the 12-minute test, I was encouraged to join the Track and Field team, during my freshman year. Since I was not fleet of foot (and a mighty 85 lbs. to boot), there was no question as to what would be my events. Being a sports history buff, I quickly started searching about information on past distance runners. I remember finding an Olympic history

The surveys include some of the top teams in CA with lots of interesting insights from each respective coach regarding their team's summer and season training. 1996 vs 2007 CA Cross Country State Meets
2007-08-03 11:01:00
Once I was in the midst of the previous post and comparing the 1987 (first) state meet to last year's meet, it was quickly evident that it's not a very good comparison. The divisions did not line up at all. I think a better comparison would be the 1996 meet (first year with five divisions) to last year's meet. I only go down to 6 places but it's very clear that the depth of the current meet is

1987 vs 2007 CA Cross Country State Meets
2007-08-01 18:00:00
Below is a comparison of the CA XC state meet in 1987 to last year's meet. I am not trying to prove anything by the numbers below. I just thought it would be interesting to compare the two meets and what changes have taken place in the past 20 years. There are some differences that need to be pointed before you peek at the data. One is that in 1987 there were only three divisions compared

The competition to garner a top 3 finish and a plaque at the CA XC State meet is at an all time high. With the internet, coaching clinics, running camps and new training ideas, individuals and teams are running better than ever. Yesterday I listed the teams that have been the most successful in the history of the CA XC state meet. Today I will list the teams that have been the most successful

When you look at the past five NCS Division IV boys' races, two teams have top 5 finishes in every championship. The first team is Arcata which has finished 1st in 2002, 5th in 2003, 5th in 2004, 5th in 2005 and 3rd in 2006. Piedmont is the other team with the multiple top 5 finishes with a 3rd in 2002, 1st in 2003, 2nd in 2004, 1st in 2005 (state champions) and 2nd in 2006. St. Mary's College

NCS Division III Pre-Season Rankings
2007-06-20 23:57:00
Historically, Division III has been one of the most competitive divisions for the North Coast Section at the state meet. The four state meet berths for both boys and girls are proof of the division's strength. This year, lots of questions abound in this division. Can the Acalanes boys make one last run at the NCS title? How will Maria Carrillo finish with the departure of coach Danny

NCS Division II Pre-Season Rankings

The 2006 NCS Division II boys' race was easily one of the most competitive at last year's Meet of Champions on the Hayward HS course. Petaluma was the heavy favorite following their sweep (1-5) at their league final. Montgomery was an impressive 2nd to Maria Carrillo in the NBL finals led by eventual NCS champion, Blake McDowell. De La Salle was well, De La Salle. Going back to 1990, DLS has

N.C.S. Division I Mid-Season Rankings
2006-10-15 10:37:00
Just as in many other sections, Division I doesn't always yield the most powerful teams or deepest competition. The majority of the teams usually fall in either Division II or III unless you are one of the many SS Division I teams. NCS Division I might not be the deepest division but the top teams can compete favorably with any of the stellar teams in the other divisions. It appears that

N.C.S. Divison II Mid-Season Rankings

Trying to figure out the top teams in each division can be very difficult but when it comes to Divison II, there are two teams that stand above the rest. Petaluma will be the team to beat in the boys while Carandolet seems to be the lock of the meet when it comes to NCS time for the girls. Both teams are young and talented and their best running seems to lay ahead of them considering their

What the Bay Area Conference is to Division V, the DFAL is to Division III. The winning teams and state meet qualifiers usually come from the who’s who in the DFAL. This year a familiar foe returns to the Division III battles as Maria Carrillo drops down from Division II. MC definitely has the runners to compete with anybody in this division in both races. Legendary Runner #7

I have to say, it's been very enjoyable researching the accomplishments of these runners. While I do remember reading about them in my younger days, I have found lots of new facts which only reaffirmed my respect for all the all time greats. Runner #7 was part of the international scene a very brief time. He finished his career undefeated in over 40 races as a senior runner. He retired at the

The #8 runner on my list was the next of the "Flying Finn", Paavo Nurmi.  He would go on to surpass Hannes Kolehmainen in terms of stature and accomplishments earning legendary status.  To this day, Nurmi still holds the record for most medals won by a Track and Field athlete as he amassed a total of 12 medals, 9 of them gold.  This might be a record that will never be surpassed. Nurmi made his

Legendary Runner #5, Abebe Bikila
2007-08-11 22:38:00
Running barefoot on the cobblestones of Rome in the 1960 Olympics, Ethiopia's Abebe Bikila became the first black African to win an Olympic medal. His winning time of 2hr.15mins 16.2secs. was a new world record as he narrowly defeated Morocco's Rhadi Ben Abdesselem. When asked why he had run the race barefoot, Bikila replied "I wanted the world to know that my country Ethiopia has always won
