Powerful Images in Classic Movie Posters that Launched Actors to Stardom
2007-07-31 09:39:00
By Dean ForsterIf you look into a student's room, you'll most likely see the walls covered with posters. You probably decorated your dorm room with posters (e.g., classic movie posters, posters of your favorite band or singer, etc.) when you were a college student. There is a huge market for classic movie posters today. These classic movie posters, sold at DVD and record shops, are mainly used by marketing outfits as marketing tools for promoting movies and persuading the movie going public to go to the theaters and watch. However, classic movie posters also serve as memorabilia for movie lovers. After all, classic movie posters are an artwork in themselves. Many of these classic movie posters are actually considered works of art because their designs become the symbols of the films.Movie posters can convey plenty of information regarding the cast, director, crew and such, but there are movie posters whose focus is more on conveying a powerful visual image. You will notice that older

Movie Review, Die Hard 4
2007-07-27 10:52:00
By Luke HainesFrom what I've read and heard, there have been two main fears surrounding the fourth installment of arguably the greatest action franchise of all time. First and foremost, the incessant bleating on about Willis age. At 52, many feel Willis is too old to carry on as John McClane, the world weary cop who killed his first terrorist on screen twenty years ago.So, first things first, Bruce Willis is still running the show. He looks a little worn and his acceptance of his own hair loss is partially to blame, but he still looks fit and strong. Say what you want about modern, fresh-faced male leads with gym-toned bodies, Willis' rough and ready everyman is still a far more likeable alternative the fresh-fruit-and-sun-tan brigade. With the first and arguably biggest hurdle cleared, however, the film comes dangerously close to falling at the second. Those not worried by Willis' age were all concerned about the rating of the film. Whereas previous installments of the franchise have

Free Movies
2007-07-21 10:25:00
By Ken MarlboroughIn life, there is no such thing as a free lunch, but amazingly one can watch free movies. Free movies are those movies that are made for free distribution or have entered the public domain. Sometimes free movies may be downloaded from the Internet, which may be done legally or illegally.Initially, this business started with free movie clips. Movie clips may be screened in a theatre before or after a full-length feature or advertised on certain sites on the Internet, but technology has changed. Movie players can now be downloaded free of charge over the Internet, including the Apple Quick Time Player, The Windows Media Player and The Real Media Player.Such software can be used to play free movies from the Internet. There are hundreds of sites that offer movies for a small fee. Why spend a fortune on movie tickets when one can watch their favorite movies at a fraction of the price from the comfort of your personal computer? Film directories like Scour and Ifilm are like

Movie Review - What the Bleep - Good Reminders But They Forgot Some Key Information
2007-07-15 04:09:00
By Scott Petullo and Stephen PetulloOverall, we enjoyed the movie “What the Bleep....” Some parts of it we responded with, “Well said!” Other parts, “You forgot some ideas!” And still others, “What the #%*$!”Some of the movie’s key points that we appreciated the most are as follows: blame and victimization are of no use; self- understanding and taking full responsibility for personal circumstances and behavior is integral to self-actualization; everyone has the power to influence his/her physical, emotional, and mental health through thoughts and feelings; it’s been clinically proven that stress, for example, contributes to illness (not that clinical proof is necessary to acknowledge the effects of stress or positive thinking/feeling); self- actualization relies on the ability to detach from and leave behind addictions, expectations, dramas, and desires of all kinds (all part of the ego-self) so that one can more closely align oneself with the spiritual self.We espe

Movies Miami Style: Films Set in the Magic City
2007-07-14 11:03:00
By Jennifer JordanMiami might not be like Los Angeles or New York, cities where movies are continuously being shot around every corner. But, Miami has certainly had its fair share of filming. Maybe it was chosen because of the movie’s plot and maybe it was chosen because of its location (it hard to shoot a beach scene in Nebraska). Whatever the reason, Miami’s presence in the cinema has left other Florida cities to approach, and shyly ask for an autograph. The following is a short list of Miami born movie moments:From Justin to Kelly: How Miami outbid every other city in America for rites to this film is beyond me. Seriously, the bidding war for this must have been up there with bidding on the Olympics or the Super Bowl. A movie featuring American Idol’s first winner and runner-up, From Justin to Kelly was enough to make anyone go from nausea to vomiting. Yes, it was seriously that bad. I would provide a lengthy discussion of the plot, but there really wasn’t one. Suffice it to

The Signal Formats in a Home Movie Theater System
2007-07-12 10:42:00
By Milos PesicCommon to most households nowadays, a Home Movie Theater has somewhat become a staple when talking about home entertainment equipment. Gone are the days when a home movie theater would cost an arm and a leg, thus the now common prevalence of home movie theaters in most homes. But as the price vs. “getting real” battle is coming to a resolution, another “battle” in the realm of home movie theater systems is brewing. Selecting the ideal video signal format for one’s home movie theater system poses to be a problem in setting up one’s home movie theater and would be the “battle” being referred to.For the longest time, only one kind of video signal was around and about: analog.Analog signals travel constantly carrying information. With analog video signals, the signals contain a stream of data feeding a CRT television the needed information on how to “paint” the lines on the phosphor screen, which is known as the picture tube. The downside to analog video sig

Movie Buff and Oscars Retirement Party Planning
2007-07-11 10:52:00
By Gail LeinoThe retirement party is at the opposite end of the spectrum from the graduation party. One celebrates the beginning of one’s working life while the retirement party symbolizes the end of the working life and hopefully more time to spend on ones hobbies. The person of honor at the retirement party may enjoy movies. I once heard about a retired man who made it his hobby to see every single movie that came out in the theaters. This equaled a lot of time and money spent at the box office each week. The retiree may not be as dedicated to the movie industry but if they are still big movie fans you can throw them an Oscar themed retirement party.Have a plastic version of the Academy Award made up with the retirees name on it and give it to them at the party. You can call it the lifetime achievement award. Other gifts can be autographed pictures of movie stars or everyone can chip in to get the retiree a gift card to the local movie theater so they can start seeing lots of movies

Free Streaming Videos

By Damian SofsianThe Internet is filled with websites that offer free streaming videos. The contents of these videos range from a wide variety of shows. From a real-time view of a certain road in Germany to a short clip from a cooking show that aired today, the contents of free streaming videos are so diverse that it is almost like having a television with a thousand channels to choose from. Many of the free videos being streamed are clips from newscasts - the weather report or an interview with a politician or celebrity. Movie and music companies also offer free streaming videos in the form of movie trailers and music videos. Sports websites offer free streaming videos of the day's sports highlights - the dunk from a basketball game or the grand slam homerun from a baseball game.News and sports websites also have a portion of their webpage space dedicated for streaming advertisement videos. Internet users are treated to a whole array of commercials that they also see on the television

Bad Movie Review - Cool as Ice
2007-07-08 10:28:00
By Darren LaRoseIf ever there was a film deserving of the infamy of being included in a bad movie night, it is Cool as Ice. This portrait of the early nineties was Vanilla Ice’s first and only starring role, and it’s about as good as you would expect. The nonsensical tagline to the film, "How do you melt a heart of stone? Just add Ice" pretty much says it all. Of course, it arrived 2 minutes after Vanilla’s 15 minutes were over, so it has languished on video for years, and is now developing into something of a cult hit for those who can appreciate how funny awesomely bad movies can be.One interesting note of trivia: This is the first film for cinematographer Janus Kaminski, whose later credits include no less than Schindler’s List. Wow. I guess we really do all have to start somewhere. On the other hand, this film effectively killed the career of director David Kellog, who waited 10 years for the laughter to die down before directing the probably equally terrible Inspector Gadg

Those who enter my office for the first time, both business contacts and friends, say, "WOW! How did you get those pictures!" You should see their eyes and how they light up like a light bulb. I’ll tell you one thing; it’s a great ice-breaker! Keep reading. Then I thought to myself, "What a great idea!" Are you asking yourself, what is he talking about?" Best Movie Lines Ever!
2007-07-07 06:18:00
By Nola ReddWhen I was a kid, I played outside for hours and read more books than most people read in a lifetime. Yet somehow I still had time to watch TV. My step-father had an insane movie collection, and I collected more than a few favorites, which I watched over and over again. In fact, when he and my mom divorced, I may have missed the movies more than I missed the man! Curious, I looked up the American Film Institute’s top 100 movie quotes. What I found was startling.Three of the quotes, including the number one on the list, came from “Gone With the Wind”. Two of those three were delivered by Scarlett O’Hara herself.Three more came from “The Wizard of Oz,” two of those delivered by Dorothy. But topping the list in number of quotes was “Casablanca” at six, twice as many as these two!Somewhat surprisingly, the Godfather, Terminator, and Bond series each sported only two quotes, one for each flick.Thirty-six of the movies were shot in 1950 or before. Rather impressive

Enjoy All Of Your Favorite Movie Classics On Satellite And Cable
2007-07-06 22:30:00
By Gregg HallThere is a reason movies become classics. The stories a good and the performers are great. Often in the old movies the story line was very simple, but a great actor can take a plain Jane role and turn it into a must see event. For example, in a Charlie Chaplin movie the entire plot was based on him trying to get home for dinner. He would take this simple act that everyone can do every day and turn into an event of hilarious proportions. The best reason to watch classic movies is that they are very family friendly. Many of the classic movies didn't have sex, cursing, or violence. Even though some of these things may have been part of the plot they were not shown in graphic detail, but implied. This makes it easier for children to watch and does not give them night mares. It was Alfred Hitchcock who said "there is nothing more frightening than an unopened door". And that is a very true statement from a horror film genius. There are now many channels on cable and satellite tel

Spiderman and Other Hollywood Heroes Save America From Repression
2007-07-06 22:20:00
By Michael BrescianiThe dull colors and drab workers attire of communistic style Marxism that seemed long since gone has returned incognito with a whole new colorful look. Looking through America ’s window of public education and long since invited in through Hollywood ’s door marked “anything goes,” social Marxism is enjoying a revival of sorts only this time little suspicion has been aroused in anyone’s mind. But, Oh the ticket price for this show!Marxism is many things but at the heart it is the means of destroying or rendering impotent western culture, democracy and the Judeo-Christian faith. Its dismal failure in the former Soviet Union doesn’t mean it’s dead and gone. With bright and one could say almost “gay” clothing teetering somewhere between the casual attire of the liberal academic and the Hollywood make up artist’s best clown, Marxism is making a full comeback debut. In academia it made recent appearances at a High School in Boulder Colorado in May of 2007

Mexico: Let's Go to the Movies!
2007-07-06 05:39:00
By Douglas BowerI love going to the movies. I always have. I can remember the highlight of every Saturday while growing up was when my Dad would give us all 25 cents and off we would go to some movie that was playing at the Dickenson.I still love movie going. I love the whole experience even if the movie isn't good. I love the getting there, the buying of the gut-rotting crap from the concession stand, finding seats, waiting for the lights to go out. Well, you get the idea.Movie going in Mexico isn't much different from going in the United States. We try to hit as many movies as we can. When we first moved to Mexico, a lawyer friend asked me if I would miss going to the movies. Can you believe that he thought we would not have movies here? (Don't get me started on educated Americans' misconceptions about Mexico!) We, in fact, get major releases here just as you do in America. They are in English, usually, and with Spanish subtitles.I have this "thing" about going to the movies that

Old Movie Posters
2007-07-05 10:22:00
By Seth Miller Hand painted crates and sandwich boards were the first forms of movie advertising. However, the turn of the century saw the introduction of posters with vibrant colors and pictures and limited words. These old movie posters were used to promote a variety of products and services, including the early cinema. One of the best ways of maintaining the value of an old movie poster is to restore it. If you plan to remove tape residue, rubber cement thinner is very effective. Using a q-tip, rub a small amount on the spot to be removed. Be careful not remove the poster ink. If the old movie poster is very valuable or if there is lots of tape residue, it is better to have it restored by a professional. Old movie posters were printed on high-acid, low-grade paper. So the process of deacidification helps arrest the deterioration. There are three methods of de-acidification -- linen backing/mounting, lamination and encapsulation. The process of linen mounting is when a restorer fuses t

Exfoliate For Amazing Movie Star Skin
2007-06-30 06:09:00
By: Kerri StaltonExfoliation is a simple idea and has long been a trick of the professional stylist’s trade, but only recently has exfoliation hit the mainstream. When you exfoliate your skin you buff away the dead skin cells that linger on the top of your face, thereby revealing a glowing layer of fresh, young skin. The layers of new skin that your face produces are smooth and soft, and are the perfect surface for flawless makeup application. If you are troubled by flaky areas on your face, or if you find your makeup clumping rather than settling evenly onto the natural contours of your nose, cheeks, and chin, exfoliation may be the answer to your beauty woes. The most affordable and convenient way to exfoliate is at home with an over-the-counter facial scrub. A scrub containing small, abrasive granules of sugar, crushed walnut shell, or oatmeal can help you whisk away dead skin cells on your face and body. For best results, thoroughly cleanse your face with warm water; then apply t

Want Your Children To Love Books - Go See A Movie!
2007-06-30 06:01:00
By: Brent SittonReading a book from which a movie is made is almost always a richer experience than simply watching the movie. The experience of savoring the words on the page and allowing yourself to be taken on a journey inspired by the author is sublime. As the author paints a picture with words, your imagination fills in the blanks until the voices of the characters and the images of the settings resonate in your mind. After reading and thoroughly enjoying a well-written book, watching the movie adaptation can be an interesting experience. The voices and images from your imagination are contrasted by those created by the actors, the director, and the cinematographer. It's not that the experience of watching a movie adaptation is necessarily bad - it's simply different. It presents a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate to your children the difference between words on a page and images on a screen - and to have a great family experience in the process.Almost without fail, your chil

By Gail LeinoBatman is a super hero that doesn’t have any real super powers. He is, a normal man, who uses his love of science, strength, and problem solving to make him a very special kind of crime-fighting super hero. Bruce Wayne was a young boy when his parents were killed during a mugging. As Bruce grew up, he maintained a vow to bring his parents’ killer to justice and so he trained hard to get his body in perfect physical condition by studying martial arts and gymnastics. Batman studied and excelled in areas of science, criminology and psychology. Batman is a top-notch escape artist but usually finds himself successful against the evil villains not by beating them up physically, but by out witting him. Batman’s super cool bat mobile, bat cave, bat cycle and bat plane and his never ending utility belt tools make him capable of handling anything villains like The Joker, The Riddler, The Penguin, The Green Hornet, or any new criminals may throw at him in his mission to keep Go

"Breach" - A Review
2007-08-13 04:32:00
By Leslie Halpern Lesson to employers: Be careful to whom you assign the offices with windows – and without. Based on the true story of FBI agent Robert Hanssen, who sold government secrets to the Russians for 22 years in the worst case of treason in modern American history, “Breach ” delivers on its promise of suspense and thrills. We follow the final two nail-biting months before Hanssen’s arrest as a young FBI trainee spies on him.Chris Cooper convincingly portrays Hanssen as a cold-hearted, homophobic traitor with a penchant for pornography. Devoted (at least outwardly) to his wife, family, and religion, he clandestinely sells secrets to the Russians in order to get even with his bosses and co-workers who fail to appreciate his hard work and impressive abilities. While gun-toting spies with the FBI get all the glory, the intelligence side of the agency toils away in near obscurity. Selling U.S. secrets – and thus compromising the lives of KGB double-agents – provides Han

"The TV Set" - A Review
2007-08-13 04:31:00
By Leslie Halpern As the opening night selection at the Florida Film Festival, “The TV Set” establishes just the right tone for a 10-day celebration of movies: intelligent, funny, thought-provoking, and star-studded. Written and directed by Jake Kasdan, who has worked on television shows such as “Freaks and Geeks” and directed films including “Orange County,” this new independent comedy peeks behind the doors of a television network as it struggles to bring a new show to the small screen.David Duchovny stars as Mike Klein, the writer and creator of a new television series called “The Wexler Chronicles,” based on his own life after the suicide of his brother. The story begins with Zach, an over-the-top young actor (Fran Kranz), attending the final casting session. Although Mike invited Zach to the audition in order to make the other actor look better by comparison, the network executives (Sigourney Weaver and Ioan Gruffudd) issue an ultimatum: They will only produce the

"Away From Her" - A Review
2007-08-13 04:31:00
By Leslie Halpern Among the many wonderful independent spotlight films in this year’s Florida Film Festival, “Away From Her” stands out as an exceptionally tender tale of loving, aging, and suffering with dignity. Directed by Canadian actress Sarah Polley and based on the short story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” by Alice Munro, the movie introduces The Andersons, an aging couple married for more than 40 years. Fiona (Julie Christie) shows symptoms of progressing Alzheimer’s disease and her husband Grant (Gordon Pinsent) is faced with the difficult decision of whether or not to place her in a permanent care facility.Grant doesn’t worry about small things like when she puts a frying pan in the freezer or can’t remember simple words such as “wine.” When she wanders off in the snow and gets lost, however, he realizes that Fiona would be safer at Meadow Lake, an assisted living home for others like her. She encourages him to make this decision, saying that all they

Mafioso Mentality
2007-08-13 04:30:00
By Sharon WhiteAt the beginning of the film Michael Corleone returns from war to a doubtful future and attends a family wedding. It becomes evident from the very beginning that Michael does not want to follow the steps of his family and embark on a Mafioso lifestyle. We are given the feeling that Don Vito Corleone respects his son’s will not to pursue such a lifestyle even though each of his other sons are predominantly involved in the family "business" and for this reason alone it can be construed that he is Don Vito’s beloved son and the one in which he takes the most interest. Despite Michaels apparent wishes not to become occupied with the family "business" it is obvious that he cannot ignore his feelings of loyalty and devotion to them or his natural ability to take a role of responsibility and mantle within the family.Don Vito Corleone is an aging godfather/patriarch who is the head of the Corleone crime family in the New York boroughs. The opening of the film is located at a

Stanley - King
2007-08-13 04:29:00
By Sharon WhiteThe Shining, brought to screen by the genius of Stanley Kubrick, is this adaptation of the Stephen King book by the same name. The movie has been called the most thrilling of all time and one of the most carefully thought out film ever. Many critics will agree that there is something special about this movie, something about the way it manages to enact an emotional response from the viewer. Kubrick uses many devices in the creation of these emotional responses and certainly one of the most important elements used to create suspense and the sense of surreality is his particular use of plot in The Shining. This essay will examine the movie’s plot, looking at how it contributes to the creation of suspense in the shining. The story is essentially about an uninspired writer, Jack Torrence who takes a job at the Overlook, an old hotel, as the winter caretaker. He then progresses into madness and attempts to kill his wife and son. Like the crazy, unbelievable sequence of event
