Queer TV
2007-08-13 04:28:00
By Sharon WhiteQueer theory and identity politics function in co ordinance with one another and they subsequently operate to correspond and contradict with media representation in various ways. This paper will endeavour to identify the tensions played out between identity politics and queer theory in relation to gender and sexuality. While attempting to identify the conflicts between identity politics and queer theory, I will subsequently concentrate on accentuating the inconsistencies that operate between these two movements in relation to the media’s representation of queer. The queer media identities examined are the television program Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and the pop icon Madonna. While the media’s representation of queer identities are seemingly flawed in relation to queer theory and identity politics, I will subsequently articulate that these representations function accordingly with individual audience members who have the ability to read such texts polysemically.

American Idol's Notorious Judge Supports PETA
2007-08-13 04:24:00
By Groshan FabiolaPETA, an International non-profit group that promotes animal protection and contests animal abuse, has found its new endorser in the form of American Idol judge Simon Cowell. The infamous judge will be promoting a public service awareness campaign that deals with animal welfare, specifically pertaining to the cruelty of leaving dogs in a vehicle on a hot day.Cowell strongly asserts his sentiments over the subject matter he previously experienced firsthand. He also realized that not a lot of people are aware that leaving dogs inside a car might cause danger or even kill the animal. And while this is just one crusade, he explores other animal issues, which need to be addressed such as the fur trade with dogs.Cowell, a 47-year old British artist, is an executive for Sony BMG. Apart from being a judge on American Idol , he is responsible for music themes of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Zig and Zag, and the World Wrestling Federation. Previously, he was also a judge on

Heather Mills Not Nervous About Dancing With the Stars
2007-08-13 04:24:00
By Groshan FabiolaDespite numerous controversies surrounding her inclusion on the celebrity dance show Dancing with the Stars, Heather Mills remains to be calm and collected, dispelling all rumors about her dropout on the popular dance competition.Early March, her capacity to perform on Dancing with the Stars sparked speculations due to her prosthetic leg. Mills replied with much optimism and humor saying, "I have no fear. I'm quite happy to be thrown around... and hopefully my leg will stay on…It's very, very unlikely my leg's going to fly off. Even though it would be quite funny to knock one of the judges out."And despite her enthusiasm and gutsy move, her prosthetic leg still became the focus of another issue. Now, an online gambling site called Bodog.com is taking advantage of a lucrative opportunity by opening bets on whether Mills ’ prosthetic leg will go flying off during her dance routine.Mills, a 39-year old former model, is popularly known as Paul McCartney’s former

Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" Brings the Past Violent Mayan Life Into Our Consciousness
2007-08-13 04:23:00
By Ed Bagley Apocalypto – 4 Stars (Excellent)Mel Gibson 's "Apocalypto" shows the raw, violent face of the advanced Mayan civilization in its decline, with its rulers insisting that the key to continued prosperity is to build more temples and offer more human sacrifices to their Gods. The result is the story of innocent Mayans being viciously attacked and their communal way of life being destroyed to meet an insane desire. Killing your own has never been a good idea historically and is perhaps a lesson we need to take more seriously today. The focal point of this film is Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) and his family. He is one of many sons of Flint Sky (Morris Birdyellowhead), the leader of a small, isolated Mayan community in the tropical jungle of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula just before the arrival of the Spanish in the New World. Flint Sky and his progeny wish only to be left alone to pursue their destiny in a peaceful environment.Enter Zero Wolf (Raoul Trujillo) and his raiding party

Ed Wood Is A Very Strange Movie About A Very Strange Real Life Director
2007-08-13 04:21:00
By Ed Bagley Ed Wood – 1 Star – Terrible"Ed Wood" is a biographical movie about Edward D. Wood, Jr. who has been dubbed the worst director in the history of filmmaking. There is no close second and not even a distant second to Wood's "worst director" label. The movie depicts the life of Ed Wood in the 1950s and shows Wood as a very determined director with virtually no financial backing and no real talent. Wood liked to direct really bad films and enjoyed dressing as a woman on the set.He was apparently surrounded by equally inept and untalented wannabes who were broke or down on their luck.Wood made such films as "Glen or Glenda", "Bride of the Monster" and "Plan 9 From Outer Space". He was into sci-fi flicks and cross-dressing as a transvestite. He was an advocate for understanding the phenomenon of transvestism before the general public was even aware of the practice and could not spell the word.In today's world, alternative lifestyles and behavior, while still not generally acce

Hair Movie Review - Starring John Savage - Treat Williams - and Beverly D'Angelo
2007-08-13 04:15:00
By David Terr "Hair" is the incredible film adaptation of the long-running Broadway play of the same name from the '60s. The music in both the play and the movie is wonderful. The movie has much more of a story to it than the play, which is mainly an exhibition of the hippie era. In addition to the music, the film is quite entertaining. The movie begins in a small town in Oklahoma, where Claude Bukowski (Savage ) boards a bus for New York City, where he is to be drafted to fight in Vietnam. Once Claude arrives, he is surprised to see a large group of hippies in Central Park. A tribe of four hippies ask him for money and he gives them a quarter. He also sees a beautiful blonde riding a horse and goes after her, encouraged by the tribe. The Tribe then befriend him and share some dope with him.Claude wakes up in the park the following morning and is ready to go off on his own, when George Berger, the leader of the tribe, notices a photo of Sheila Franklin, the girl they'd seen earlier rid

Yellow Submarine Movie Review - Starring The Beatles
2007-08-13 04:14:00
By David Terr "Yellow Submarine " is a psychedelic adventure in animation from the late '60s featuring many songs by the Beatles . The music and animation are both terrific. However, I think the film is a bit scary for young children. The movie begins in Pepperland, a very peaceful and happy community beneath the sea. Pepperland thrives on music, provided by Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. A sinister group of people known as Blue Meanies decide to attack Pepperland with their army of unusual characters, such as apple bonkers, snapping turks, and a flying glove. They first attack the band with a giant bubble of blue glass, which they get trapped inside. Then they go after the citizens with the rest of their army, including the flying glove. When all seems lost, the mayor tells Old Fred to set sail aboard the Yellow Submarine and get help. As Fred leaves, the mayor gets bonked with apples.Old Fred stops in Liverpool, where he meets the Beatles, who are hanging out at the Pier. He b

Groundhog Day Movie Review - Starring Bill Murray And Andie McDowell
2007-08-13 04:13:00
By David Terr "Groundhog Day" is a very entertaining and unusual movie, starring Bill Murray and Andie McDowell. The story, which involves experiencing the same day repeatedly, is quite intriguing and the acting is very good, especially that of Bill Murray.Phil Connors (Murray) is a rather bitter news reporter who's assigned to report on whether or not the groundhog in Punxtawney, Pennsylvania sees his shadow, indicating whether or not there will be six more weeks of winter. He wakes up in his hotel room at 6AM to the tune of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" on his alarm clock radio. He has a rather unpleasant day, encountering a pushy insurance salesman on the street and accidentally stepping into a puddle. A blizzard hits the town, whence he and the crew are forced to stay another night. The next morning, Phil is quite surprised to learn that it's groundhog day again! He repeats the same day with all the same experiences. This occurs again day after day.Eventually Phil learns that

Books or Movies? Which is "More Useful" for Our Growth and Happiness?
2007-08-13 04:10:00
By Ugur Akinci When I was a little kid I used to be a book worm. I used to read everything I could get my hands on including novels, old sales catalogs, history magazines, trashy tabloids, cartoon books and anything in between. We did not have a TV set when I was growing up and movies was something we could not afford frequently. Thanks to wonderful my grand mother, I could go see movies at our neighborhood theater twice a week during those long summer months. I grew up watching more John Ford movies and Rock Hudson-Doris Day and Jerry Lewis-Dean Martin comedies than you can imagine. But my love for the flickering images really flared up into a forest fire when I was in college and discovered the classics of the Polish, Italian and French cinema.Graduate school was again a time to turn to books, lots of it. Eventually I started to add fiction and poetry to my regular reading regimen as well. But the needle started to slide back to the movies in my later years. These days basically I'm a n

On Golden Pond (DVD) Review
2007-08-17 11:33:00
By Britt Gillette Nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and eventual winner of 3 Oscars, On Golden Pond is an unconventional Hollywood blockbuster. Based on the play of the same name by Ernest Thompson, the film offers a character driven storyline that explores numerous themes such as aging, abandonment, and family relationships of various types. Veteran film and TV director Mark Rydell packs the big screen with a star-studded cast for this 1981 release. Because of its well developed characters and realistic portrayal of human interactions, it’s a film that’s almost certain to make you laugh, cry, and/or smile. In fact, if you don’t find Norman to be one of the most hilarious and eccentric characters ever created, then you must not be watching the same film.On Golden Pond follows the lives of a retired New England couple on their annual summer vacation to Golden Pond. Norman Thayer (Henry Fonda) is an aging, long-retired college professor. Sarcastic and crotche

5 Things Movies Can Teach You About Love
2007-08-15 10:19:00
By Leslie Halpern Maybe you believe that date movies are merely a prelude to the rest of a romantic evening. That doesn’t have to be true. If you look a little deeper you can find a variety of great ideas for sealing the long-term romantic deal. Obviously, you don’t have to delve quite as deeply as in a Federico Fellini or Ingmar Bergman film, but date films aren’t just mindless fluff either. Based on their production dates (though often limited by their budgets), they show you exactly what men and women of each generation find heart-warming, romantic, and sexy.1. Rain is Romantic. Rain showers aren’t the time to run for cover or hide under an umbrella. They’re for singing and dancing. An even better idea is kissing upside down (“Spider-Man”) or in the more traditional upright position if you prefer (“L.A. Story”). Rain storms also make the perfect setting for marriage proposals (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”) or proclaiming your love. When the weather won’t coo

Examining Dream Sequences in Eragon
2007-08-15 10:19:00
By Leslie Halpern The fantasy adventure “Eragon ,” based on book one of Christopher Paolini’s trilogy about a young Dragon Rider, has been drawing criticism for borrowing ideas from the “Harry Potter” series (Hagrid’s dragon eggs and baby dragons), “Star Wars” series (Luke’s uncle killed by evil empire), and most notably “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy (darkly magical advisor, one young man must make a journey, etc). Another element that “Eragon” has in common with these other films is its use of dream sequences – in this case false dreams sent by an evil sorcerer working for a corrupt king.In the movie, a teenaged farm boy named Eragon (Edward Speleers) finds what appears to be the last dragon egg. After secretly raising the animal, Eragon reluctantly becomes a Dragon Rider in order to right some of the wrongs taking place in the kingdom of Alagaesia. In an earlier era, dragons and their riders soared through the skies keeping peace across the land until tra

An Interview with "My Date With Drew" Star Brian Herzlinger
2007-08-15 10:18:00
By Leslie Halpern Most date movies are fictional stories about two people perfectly suited for each other, but enormous obstacles stand in their way. In the documentary film, “My Date With Drew,” you would have a hard time finding anyone who thinks that fledgling filmmaker Brian Herzlinger and superstar Drew Barrymore are perfectly suited for each other. However, the obstacles to their ever even meeting – much less dating or falling in love – are certainly enormous.“It’s been a life-long dream of mine to meet Drew Barrymore,” Herzlinger said during a phone interview when asked about the documentary he stars in, co-directs, co-produces, and co-edits. “Making this movie is a side effect of realizing my dream to meet the person who was pictured on my bedroom wall as I was growing up. Everybody has a similar dream.”When he won $1,100 on a game show with the answer “Drew Barrymore,” he decided that fate was telling him to use the money to make his dream come true.“Ha

An Interview with "What the Bleep Do We Know?!" Co-producer Betsy Chasse
2007-08-15 10:17:00
By Leslie Halpern In 2004, a little science film called “What the Bleep Do We Know?!” was a surprise hit that got everyday average people thinking about quantum physics. Recently the filmmakers, Betsy Chasse, Mark Vicente and William Arntz of Yelm, Washington-based Lord of the Wind Films, released a special “Down the Rabbit Hole Quantum” edition of the movie with six hours of additional interviews. It’s all part of their plan to take the fear factor out of science.Maybe you find the words “quantum physics” a little intimidating or even downright scary. “What the Bleep Do We Know?!” opens a whole new world of scientific possibilities in words, analogies, and images that almost anyone can understand. The filmmakers explore the answers to the most asked questions about the universe: “What is it? Where do we fit in? And why do we do what we do?”“Our goal was to make those words ‘quantum physics’ not so scary to people,” Chasse said during a telephone interview

An Interview with “Zero Day” director Ben Coccio
2007-08-15 10:17:00
By Leslie Halpern “Sometimes a subject just chooses you and it’s impossible to look away. When that happens, you just have to approach the subject honestly and hope others can find value in it.” Filmmaker Ben Coccio gave this explanation for choosing the subject of high school shootings for his first feature length film, a fictional account of two teenaged boys planning and carrying out a deadly attack on fellow students. The film “Zero Day” was shot in a faux documentary style as if an editor had pieced together home movies from the shooters’ video diary. We are introduced to Andre (Andre Keuck) and Cal (Calvin Robertson), two likeable teens who for unexplained reasons decide to commit a murderous rampage followed by their own suicides at their high school on the first day the temperature reaches zero degrees. Their video diary is an attempt to provide others with an explanation of what they did (although not necessarily why they did it), an invitation to selected media to

"Blood and Chocolate" – A Review
2007-08-15 09:49:00
By Leslie Halpern Life is confusing for the beautiful 19-year-old Vivian (Agnes Bruckner). She’s an orphan living with a single aunt who seems to harbor resentment towards her. Her cousin is uncomfortably possessive. Her family is forcing her into a union with a much-older man whom she doesn’t love. She found a handsome young artist who wants a relationship with her despite her family’s resistance. Oh, and she’s a werewolf.Vivian’s legacy and prophecy keep her tied to the “pack,” but her heart longs to explore other people, other relationships, and other lands outside the safe haven formed by the few remaining loup-garoux (werewolves). Chased out of other countries over the centuries, the small pack of half-human werewolves hides in relative obscurity in Romania until a frightening chain of events changes things forever. The young woman’s struggle is symbolized by her job at a chocolate shop. While she hides the primitive, savage urges that run through her blood line, sh

"The Number 23" – A Review
2007-08-15 09:48:00
By Leslie Halpern It’s no accident that the release date for the film “The Number 23” is February 23. In fact, in the world of Walter Sparrow (Jim Carrey), nothing about 23 is a coincidence: Everything he sees, hears, and especially reads relates to that cursed number. In director Joel Schumacher’s psychological thriller, Sparrow watches his entire life unravel when as an animal control officer, he encounters an animal he can’t control on the evening of his birthday. This leads to his wife (Virginia Madsen) buying him a tattered copy of “The Number 23,” a novel about obsession, from a used book store while she waits for him. As he reads the novel, he becomes convinced that somehow the author is writing about Sparrow’s past, and that the disturbed detective in the book reflects his own life yet to come. His wife finds his obsession ridiculous, but Sparrow’s son Robin (Logan Lerman) agrees that his father has marked similarities to the character and that the number 23 ap

"Breach" - A Review
2007-08-15 09:47:00
By Leslie Halpern Lesson to employers: Be careful to whom you assign the offices with windows – and without. Based on the true story of FBI agent Robert Hanssen, who sold government secrets to the Russians for 22 years in the worst case of treason in modern American history, “Breach ” delivers on its promise of suspense and thrills. We follow the final two nail-biting months before Hanssen’s arrest as a young FBI trainee spies on him.Chris Cooper convincingly portrays Hanssen as a cold-hearted, homophobic traitor with a penchant for pornography. Devoted (at least outwardly) to his wife, family, and religion, he clandestinely sells secrets to the Russians in order to get even with his bosses and co-workers who fail to appreciate his hard work and impressive abilities. While gun-toting spies with the FBI get all the glory, the intelligence side of the agency toils away in near obscurity. Selling U.S. secrets – and thus compromising the lives of KGB double-agents – provides Han

"The TV Set" - A Review
2007-08-15 09:47:00
By Leslie Halpern As the opening night selection at the Florida Film Festival, “The TV Set” establishes just the right tone for a 10-day celebration of movies: intelligent, funny, thought-provoking, and star-studded. Written and directed by Jake Kasdan, who has worked on television shows such as “Freaks and Geeks” and directed films including “Orange County,” this new independent comedy peeks behind the doors of a television network as it struggles to bring a new show to the small screen.David Duchovny stars as Mike Klein, the writer and creator of a new television series called “The Wexler Chronicles,” based on his own life after the suicide of his brother. The story begins with Zach, an over-the-top young actor (Fran Kranz), attending the final casting session. Although Mike invited Zach to the audition in order to make the other actor look better by comparison, the network executives (Sigourney Weaver and Ioan Gruffudd) issue an ultimatum: They will only produce the
