Product Recall. PR Premonition.
2007-08-02 23:41:36
News of dangerous and bad-quality products coming out of China has come thick and fast recently. Many seem to blame China for not regulating manufacturers more efficiently – and they are making efforts to improve - by arresting (and even executing) corrupt officials, and by closing down or revoking export licenses for the worst offenders. While supporting the need to improve things at source, I believe that companies buying from China (or from anywhere) also need to take responsibility for the quality and safety of the goods they brand and sell on to their consumers. The latest news is about the toy-maker Mattel, and it comes on two fronts. One via a PR offensive, the other via a product recall. ImageThief posted an interesting article on July 30th about how Mattel, almost alone among toy-makers, had given a New York Times reporter access to their operations, and notes: “It sets Mattel up as an example of how to manage overseas manufacturing, dwelling at length on what the comp

Securing Your Supply Chain in China - Part 2
2007-08-02 10:51:01
Part 3 starts off with a case study of working with a car accessory project (wanted a quality product at a savings) that started with 30 suppliers, and then narrowed down to 5.. but there were some issues: All of them were trying to aggressively looking to expand to U.s., so educating a potential competitor Decision was made to find to use his firm to do assembly, packaging, and export as a firewall no big surprise, and the case is pretty basic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dxTb4Nevqo For anyone dealing with a commodity like brake pads, this is going to be the case. Especially if one can find 30 suppliers that are readily accessible to a search. Were the product more specialized, perhaps the maturity of suppliers would be lower, but one would be hard pressed these days to find a supplier that is not going to Europe for a trade show. The big takeaway from this part is that it is best to use a firewall, and I agree wholly. It prevents the supplier from identifying the ultimate bu

Society Snapshot: Faces of the Future For those who are interested in the future of China , and its little emperors and little empresses, I highly suggest reading this post. While only a few pages long, this post introduced at three issues that China will face over the next 20 years or so: food availability vs obesity in China, little emperors vs. aging population, free education for all. Far short of answering the critical questions, the strength of this post lies in keeping it simple and peaking the interest of readers. For those looking to sell into China, this is a post for you.
