Answers.com Loses Significant Google Traffic Despite Google Definition Links
2007-08-05 16:41:00
Pretty amazing - Answers.com has issued a press release to warn that its search traffic is down 28 percent due to "a search engine algorithmic adjustment by Google ." It raises lots of issues -- how dependent should you be on search traffic; how the "definitions" links that Answers.com has from Google don't seem to generate that much traffic and whether it is really Answers.com that's on the outs with Google, rather than a general change.

The SEO of Everyday Pages
2007-08-03 05:16:00
One of Google's patent applications, Assigning geographic location identifiers to web pages, describes in detail how Google might associate geographic relevance to pages that don't contain geographic information. This association may be based upon their relationship to pages on the same site that do contain geographic location information, looking at how many clicks away those pages are from each other, and whether the anchor text used in links appears to indicate the existence of geographic information. So, a page that links to another with the anchor text "directions" might be assumed to be geographically relevant to an address listed on the directions page.

The great rich internet application SEO debate (part 1)
2007-08-07 19:36:00
Search engine optimization in rich internet applications is starting to come up a lot more. Part of has to do with the fact that rich internet applications are simply becoming more prevalent. But part of it also has to do with the fact that competition in the space has never been at a higher level than it is now. As a result, SEO -ability is starting to become a differentiator especially between Silverlight, which uses plain text XAML, and Flash, which uses a binary SWF. This shouldn’t be the case.

Linking Strategies: The Top 10 Link Love Directories
2007-08-06 20:30:00
If you are trying to elevate your listings, build traffic and create a trust network for yourself (you should be!), you can do a lot with your SEO by using linking strategies in combination with the above, creating a better competitive edge for yourself, and a sustaining search engine presence. Some past examples of highly first page ranked pages *without* content that matches link text are “click here” (adobe acrobat: to download ‘click here’), “miserable failure” (the whitehouse google bomb) and “robot” (the irobot movie with Will Smith, which only had Flash as content).

Evolving Requirements For SEO
2007-08-09 16:41:00
Requirements for SEO would be anathema to the search engines. It would create a hierarchy of haves and have-nots, and it would also create new headaches for the search engines. Their goal is to index everything on the Web and then organize it by what's relevant for each query. Sites that rank high tend to follow one or more best practices in terms of site structure, inbound links, content freshness, and other measures, but there is no mandatory SEO procedure.

Small Business Owners can Learn SEO
2007-08-13 18:12:00
Matt Cutts posted on Friday a few SEO Tips for Bloggers. He starts the post by providing a variety of links to the presentation that he gave at Wordcamp 2007, including a video of the hour long talk, a transcript of the talk, and three different write-ups of the session. One of the very cool things that came out of Matt's post (as opposed to the session at Wordcamp) was the discussion of San Diego chiropractor David Klein. David Klein attended last years Pubcon in Las Vegas, and he volunteered his site for review in one of the Site Clinic sessions. It was immediately clear that David was at a very early stage in learning SEO.

SEO Secret: Do What’s Natural
2007-08-17 16:38:00
If you want to achieve more than temporary high ranking on the major Web search engines, don’t cheat, say experts. So called “Black Hat” gimmicks may provide a brief surge but will eventually backfire. The real trick is simple: provide regular, original, first party content. Right now, St. Peter says, one of the biggest topics in the SEO field is the way Google is trying to combat paid links. The new algorithm as of about two months ago looks askance at sites that suddenly go from zero to 1,500 backlinks in days.

Free SEO Consultations
2007-08-19 19:08:00
Prospective clients and colleagues request free SEO (define) consultations in different ways. Some people might ask you to take a quick peek at a robots.txt file to ensure the formatting is appropriate. Others might ask you to glance at a Web page and provide quick feedback. A yes/no question is great: does Google use the meta-tag keywords attribute to determine relevancy? (The answer's no.) Quick and easy. I don't mind answering some SEO, Web design, or Web site usability questions every now and again, if I have the time. However, some people who ask for a free consultation are, in reality, taking advantage of your time and expertise.

Web Publishing: The Dark Side of SEO
2007-08-24 13:58:00
Businesses of all sizes get taken by a bad breed of online marketing firms that shamelessly over promise and then shamelessly under deliver. These fly-by-night SEO ‘experts’ lurk in the darkest corners of the Web, many under the cloak of anonymity, preying on businesses that seek a competitive edge on the ever-expanding Internet.Unfortunately, many fall victim because they don’t do adequate research, and buy into hyped-up sales pitches packed with unachievable promises. When all’s said and done, they are left with sub-standard services, products and results — if anything at all.

What is Universal Search?
2007-08-22 12:42:00
Universal Search is rapidly becoming the next big step in search engine evolution. Universal Search is the integration of multiple kinds of media into search results. Search engine monster Google was the first to release universal search. Google's users recently may have noticed images, YouTube videos, and other forms of media showing up in the standard results page. The other major search engines have all either recently rolled out their own versions of Universal Search or have announced plans to do so. Such a significant change in the operation of every major search engine warrants close attention from SEO companies.

"Black hats" need to be ever more cunning in their struggle for search-engine ranking
2007-08-31 19:01:00
Google's goal is to deliver the most relevant information for any search query, and if it happens to be some teenager's blog rather than a corporate website, that is how the cyber cookie crumbles. But early on, a small group of webmasters and marketers discovered that search relevance could be altered by exerting control over the hundreds of variables that search engines use to rank webpages. During the past decade, this effort to improve a site's ranking has gained a name. They call it search engine optimisation (SEO) and, according to the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization it was an industry worth $US9.4 billion in 2006.

Google webmaster tools starts to think international
2007-08-29 19:56:00
At least two major new features are arriving in Google ’s webmaster tools console according to information from the SES San Jose conference and the official Google webmaster tools blog. The other new development which is currently being looked at, according to a senior Google source, is the addition of a tool within webmaster tools whereby you can specify the country your site relates to. The countries will be listed in a drop down list - and you’ll almost certainly only be able to choose once country per site.

Here is an onpage SEO list to (re)consider:
2007-09-25 15:24:00
After solid keyword research, make sure to include searched keyterms/phrases on your page, early and often - without being repetitive. Thinks about using synonyms and permutations to describe your content, and don’t worry too much about keyword density. Make sure you place those keywords in the TITLE of your page.Use 1-2 keywords per page and no more than three. We want to make sure the page reads well. You also don’t need to write a thesis either. Folks scan on the web, and it’s good to break content into more pages than just a monolithic one. Test with varying word counts, but 200 words on a page is definitely good.Place your keywords inside H tags, and while H1 tags are important, you can also use H2 to help support your topic. Use CSS stylesheets to blend into the page and/or graphics. Use internal linking strategies to emphasize anchor text links and make sure the receiving page matches that keyword / topic. Optimize directories and filenames with keywords you are targeting.

How to Make SEO Work for You
2007-09-11 19:45:00
To get a good ranking on Google, or any major search engine, you have to make sure your Web site is "search-engine optimized." Search engine optimization (SEO ) just means your site is as accessible as possible to the search engines to improve the chances that they will serve it up when your potential customers type in specific search terms. The more easily search engines find your site, the higher up it appears on their results pages. Constructing your site the right way is important. "Structure your site properly, code it cleanly, and use necessary keywords," says Andy Leff, an entrepreneur and lead blogger for INCplace.com.

Interview with the Link Guru
2007-09-07 16:39:00
For example, if we’re focused on distributing link embedded content I’d build out the host site with a detailed version of the content (complete with photos, video, downloads etc). Much shorter versions would be sent to topical bloggers with a redeemable incentive or freebie for their readers. At the same time we’ll contact key media and announce the new resource. Once both the bloggers and media have been notified we’ll launch a standard press release and email the client’s customer base with an announcement and link incentive. All four tactics run either simultaneously or within days of each other. I am less concerned with attracting large numbers of links in a short period than I am of attracting many of the SAME type links. I try to avoid that.

Invest in SEO says Chartered Institute of Marketing
2007-09-02 17:47:00
Without investment in SEO , online businesses will struggle to generate the traffic it needs to survive. This revelation is provided by the Chartered Institute of Marketing in the U.K. "Although there will always be those who accidentally stumble across your web site, if you are looking to attract new customers you need to invest in search engine optimisation to drive customers to your web site," said David Thorp, CIM director of research and information, via DirectTraffic.org. “We are all familiar with the term "Google it", which reflects the near universal use of search engines such as Google when searching on the internet.”

Is Google ditching pagerank?
2007-09-28 16:23:00
Rumor has it that Google may be getting rid of the elusive, but very important PageRank — that friendly green status bar on the Google Toolbar that website owners try to build up. PageRank is what made Google’s search results as good as they are — it is one of the many factors that help the search engine determine how to rank results. The webmasters at Digital Point want some clarification though. It’s been far too long since the last “Pagerank toolbar export” happened, and that doesn’t sit will with people who put effort into building links.

Good content still king in search engine marketing
2007-10-12 16:29:00
Search engine marketing is emerging as a niche field of Internet marketing, as people have started using search engines predominantly to search for information.Search engine optimization (SEO) experts are now hired to increase the visibility of blogs and websites in Internet searches. Blogs that rank "high" in a Google search, for instance, would have higher chances of getting noticed by people. SEO experts are often skilled in web design, copy writing and Internet marketing.

Top 10 Reasons You Must Do SEO
2007-10-02 11:00:00
7. Interactive PR: Perhaps you’ve had some bad press. Perhaps those mentions are showing up in Google when someone searches for your company name. These things can be addressed. There are search engine optimization methods that can help to push those “bad” results to the second page, and leave positive results on the first page.A good case study in Interactive PR is Wal-Mart, in which there are Web sites such as walmartwatch.com and wakeupwalmart.com that are not exactly flattering to the company. These Web sites rank within the top ten results on Google for the search phrase “walmart.” I have witnessed steps taken by Walmart to deal with this issue, but these two Web sites still rank. Through tactics such as creating a charity website (walmart.org could be a Web site set up to speak to their charitable efforts, for example), you can almost assure yourself of having one less of these unfavorable Web sites showing up in the top ten results.

New Google Reader Stats
2007-10-17 05:49:00
Maybe it is time for people to cough up some logs and see what is really happening with the delay between actual log parsing and on line statistics for items on the web server. For example my on line tracking will show 100 visitors while my direct log parsing system will show 300 visitors, consistently logging in 1/3rd on average all the visitors to the web site..It looks like feed burner and the new Google stats are looking at the same issue. In that the numbers are not going to be accurate, and not accurate depending on where you are in their system, and how they read/rank the blog or site you are working from.
