Mozilla Giving Away Security Testing Tools
2007-08-02 13:17:23
Mozilla Corp. will release some of its homegrown security tools to the open-source community, the company’s head of security said Wednesday, starting with a “fuzzer” it uses to pin down JavaScript bugs in Firefox. The JavaScript fuzzer, said Window Snyder, Mozilla’s security chief since last September, will be handed over Thursday morning, following a presentation at Black Hat, a two-day security conference that opened Wednesday in Las Vegas. 10 days from report to patch for new Firefox exploit
2007-07-31 02:48:51
Looks like the protocol handler problems just won’t die. On July 20th, Jesper Johansson report ed that Firefox 2.0.0.5 didn’t quite get all the bugs out of passing strings to external programs registered as protocol handlers. 10 days later, Mozilla has released a patch in version 2.0.0.6. The first version of the patch was actually coded on July 21st, finalized on the 23rd, tested and reviewed, and released to auto-updates on the 30th. You can see all the gory details in bug 389106 . Ironically, FF appears to have been doing the same thing that IE was doing, which Window Snyder called a “critical vulnerability in IE” on the 18th. Snyder gave Microsoft a hard time because they were not planning a fix, but on the 23rd he had to eat crow, saying: (more…) Share This

Firefox users rave about Kiwi-made preview tool
2007-07-31 02:45:28
Christchurch start-up, Interclue Ltd, has received rave revues from users around the world for its new web preview tool. The tool, which has so far been released as an add-on for the Mozilla Firefox browser, provides an almost instant preview of web page contents when the user’s cursor is held over a page link. Interclue also tells you what type of file is linked to (ie, PDF), the number of words it contains and what sort of action the link will perform when clicked. (more…) Share This

Firefox 2.0.0.6 update available now
2007-07-31 02:43:36
A quick update to Firefox 2.0.x branch has been released by Mozilla to address a couple of security related bugs. The first one, labeled as critical, was discovered last week and is related to the inclusion of spaces and quotes in web addresses that could be used to pass parameters to third party applications and allow remote code execution attacks. The second one could affect extensions that modify or create about:blank pages allowing an attacker to get more access to a user’s computer. It’s strongly recommended that users update to this update either waiting for the update to be prompted within 48 hours or selecting Check For Updates… in Firefox’s Help menu. Skype also affected by supposed “Firefox vulnerability”
2007-07-30 15:23:14
The ripples from the problematic way special URLs are handled, discovered last week, continue to spread. Research by heise Security showed that as well as Firefox , other applications like Skype or Miranda can act as a gateway for the problem. This strongly suggests that the actual cause of the problem is the confusing way in which Windows handles URLs. If a program considers that it is not responsible for dealing with a URL type such as mailto:, it passes such URLs to the operating system to be dealt with further. Under Windows XP, however, what then happens depends on whether or not Internet Explorer 7 is installed (even if IE has nothing to do with the protocol in question). (more…) Share This

IE7/Firefox URI Handling Bug Caused by Windows After All
2007-07-30 11:41:55
An exploitable bug discovered earlier this month that was first believed to have been caused by Internet Explorer 7.0, before Mozilla was forced to admit that it afflicted Firefox as well, has apparently been traced back to a Windows API function. The discovery may have been first revealed through the US-CERT Web site of the Dept. of Homeland Security, which now classifies it as a “Microsoft Windows URI protocol handling vulnerability.” The function in question is an old favorite of malware writers: ShellExecute(), which was the subject of a notorious Windows 2000 exploit four years ago. While Microsoft has yet to issue an official statement or bulletin making this discovery clear, it probably advised US-CERT with regard to its existence. The official government site this morning reads, “We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem.” (more…) Share This

Me.dium
2007-08-03 10:57:13
Me.dium is like being given a piggyback by someone surfing the web. The interface sits as a sidebar on your Firefox browser (a version for Microsoft Explorer will soon be released) and at the top of the window, you can see which sites other Me.dium users are currently looking at. If anything takes your interest, like Frogger you can leap from your surfing session to theirs, and follow them as they explore the web. Don’t worry though, no-one can follow you to sensitive sites such as online banking or email. (more…) Share This

Browser Market Report: Firefox Usage Down
2007-08-06 15:24:01
Apple’s move to release a version of Safari for Windows users has done little to inflate Safari’s overall marketshare. The latest Net Applications data shows Safari took 4.56 percent of the browser market in July, the first full month in which the new Safari 3 Public Beta was readily available. That’s up slightly on June’s figures (4.49 percent), but down on May’s 4.82 percent share. (more…) Share This

Firefox is a Public Asset
2007-08-10 00:08:27
Recently a Mozilla observer and contributor asked why Firefox isn’t treated as a typical for-profit, commercial effort, and why we are giving up the chance to get rich. This is a great topic for discussion, I’m glad it was raised. I’ve got a very strong opinion on this, and am quite interested in what others think. There are many reasons why Firefox is a public asset, built for public benefit rather than private wealth. (more…) Share This

New Mozilla working group aims to simplify enterprise Firefox deployment
2007-08-09 06:58:25
Mozilla’s newly formed Enterprise Working Group (EWG) aims to improve the potential for Firefox adoption in businesses. Like Mozilla’s user retention plan and ongoing documentation project, the EWG will serve an important function in Mozilla’s effort to increase Firefox uptake rates and improve the browser’s usability. Specifically, the EWG will attempt to find practical solutions to management and security issues faced by businesses. At the group’s first meeting late last month, the participants discussed their own personal experiences with Firefox in an enterprise environment. In sharing their experiences, the participants found much common ground, and they were able to identify an assortment of challenges that seem to be universal in enterprise environments. Some key issues include packaging, patch and settings management, and user profile handling. (more…) Share This

75% of the people who download Firefox don’t become active users
2007-08-08 15:08:54
According to the Mozilla wiki: “In order for Firefox to reach our market share goals, we need to improve our ability to retain users . Currently, approximately 50% of the people who download Firefox actually try it and about 50% of those people continue to use it actively.” Firefox’s claims to success have been supported by clocking up the number of downloads, encouraged by payments from Google, but it turns out that 75% of the people making those downloads don’t “continue to use it actively.” Mozilla also has a 12-point plan to increase retention levels, though it’s actually an 11-point plan with one item repeated. Mozilla Gets Fuzzy: New Tools Help Hackers Test Firefox Security
2007-08-08 13:32:11
Mozilla recently announced at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas that it would release a series of security tools, known as fuzzers, which have previously only been used internally, to the internet at large. The move is designed to give outside hackers easier ways to test for security flaws in Firefox and other web browsers. Fuzzers are tools that poke, prod and sometimes outright attack a piece of software to test its robustness and identify potential vulnerabilities. (more…) Share This

First look to Firefox 3’s new download manager
2007-08-12 01:22:06
The revamped download manager , one of the expected features defined in the Firefox 3 product requirement document has been added to the development code today and will be available in tomorrow’s nightly (development release). At first glance the main change is that downloads are now organized in active and inactive (completed or canceled) so it is easier to see what’s going on. Also, pause and cancel text links have been replaced for pause and stop icons for quicker recognition, to save space and make it more coherent with overall Firefox interface style: text links should take to a web page and not perform an action. Instead of the rough tab by tab stepping, tabs now slide in a continuous soft movement whenever you scroll them with the mouse wheel, add a new one or change to a different tab beyond the current visible section.
