As you probably have understood - I adore Sushi Art! Look at it! It is absolutely amazing! I found these Kazari Maki-zushi images when I went looking for sushi art. The Japan Foundation in Sydney Australia had an event about kazari maki-zushi this summer. (more…)

How to make Korean Sushi
2007-08-30 11:52:20
How To Make Korean Sushi (Kimbob) - Watch today’s top amazing videos here I have had or seen Korean sushi been made before. It is interesting, but I will definitely stick to the Japanese way of doing it. It feels more like it appreciate the subtleties. Details. The art of sushi… You know… What’s with the paper plates here anyway? Don’t they use chopping boards in Korea? Hm.

Nyotaimori - naked sushi…
2007-08-30 09:05:18
I’ve seen this concept of naked sushi pop up lots of places lately. Hadaka Sushi is one of these restaurants that are mentioned in that contex. “Hadaka” means naked in Japanese which is very much the theme at the Hadaka Sushi restaurant, and their proclaimed concept is “sushi gone naughty”. I think I would add - “sushi gone sex industry American”. The restaurant is located in the heart of West Hollywood on Sunset strip and is an “Adults Only” Sushi restaurant, bar and lounge. (more…)

Just hungry?
2007-08-29 12:00:53
This website is dedicated to what she calls real food. It has a large section on Japanese food and sushi. It is run by this girl called Makiko (but her friends and family all call her Maki (cute!)). She was born in Tokyo, but grew up all over the place - in various sections of Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture in Japan; in three different places in England; and around the New York City area. She says about the content on her website: (more…)

Care for some frushi?
2007-08-28 15:13:14
Innovative use of both the term and the looks of sushi - the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Food Science Club developed something not made of fish, but of fruit. The dessert item, named Kudamushi Fruit Sushi, earned second place last weekend (July 28-29 2007) in the annual Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) product development competition in Chicago. Oooo… sushi fragrance!
2007-09-23 09:00:40
I am not sure if the smell is what I enjoy most about the sushi experience. Yes, it plays a very important part of it, but from that to wearing it like perfume… I don’t know. In addition to the “typical” cologne spray, the sushi scent is also available in Bath and Shower oils and gels, calming lotion and room spray! This is interesting. Wanna have your house smell like a sushi bar? The company that sells this innovative and exiting fragrance is Demeter Fragrance Library. They are said to specializes in “everyday” scents. From their website they state about the smell of the sushi scent: (more…)

The Swedish chef and raw fish!
2007-09-22 11:30:48
It is almost sushi the Swedish chef is making, and it gives us a small view into how hard it is to kill a (muppet) fish! I sympathize with the swedish chef. Ordiibooordi fishy… Yeah. We pretty much talk the same language. And I think we have some similarities when it comes to cooking too!

Sushi Magic sushi maker
2007-09-22 11:15:21
This was so cheesy that it cracked me up. It is a sushi roller! And nigiri maker . I have not tried it, so I can’t really be hard on it other than it is not the “proper japanese way” of making sushi. (more…)

Image tag browser
2007-09-22 11:00:25
I found this online image tag viewer while “Stumbling“, where you can externally search for photographs tagged with sushi in Flickr. You can of course search for whatever tag you would like, really. But we searched for sushi. And sashimi. And bento… Because in addition to getting a gallery of 36 images at the time, you also get to see what other tags are related to sushi in Flickr, and in that way you can dive into whatever takes your fancy while watching beautiful photographs. I was going in loops - sushi, sashimi, bento, lunch, sushi… (more…)

Japanese Food Trade Directory
2007-09-20 16:00:40
The latest Eat-Japan Trade Directory Vol. 3 is out. It includes comprehensive information on over 100 top quality Japanese food and drink related products, arranged by category for ease of use. It also contains a glossary of terms, as well as global distributor listing with details of around 250 companies. I think this is written and focused mainly on the UK market, but I have not seen the Directory, so I am not sure. If you are in the food & drink industry you are lucky - you can get it free of charge (p +p extra). We are in the food and trade business, right? You can get the book from Eat Japans website: Links: Eat-Japan

Japanese Food 101
2007-09-18 15:44:09
This website sounds like it was created as a result of frustration. The creators behind this thought there were so much information about Japanese cooking, cuisine, and etiquette out on the Internet all spread out. They did not want to have to spend time trying to find all they were looking for, so they wanted to gather it and created japanesefood101.com. It is a good beginning. According to them - all their recipes have been tried and tested. I have just peaked. Link: Japanese 101

Sushi nightmare?
2007-09-16 08:00:51
The artist here, ~Zeanu, calls this his infamous Sushi pic. “Just showin’ me all frollic amidst flying winged sushi rolls… done with ballpoint, touched it up a bit in Photoshop.” I get the feeling that he is fighting evil sushi in a nightmare. The rolls is not necessarily that evil, their wings are quite friendly looking, but they come off as very aggressive. And he’s not too fond of them. Maybe he has had too much sushi lately? He made two versions of it. One in color and one in black and white. I like them: (more…)

How to eat sushi II
2007-09-16 05:14:09
VideoJug: How To Eat Sushi This video is a brief introduction and shows you the initial knowledge you need to have to go to a sushi bar. It covers the topics of napkin, plate, hashi oki, chopsticks, dish for soy sauce. I see at the VideoJugs website that this video has created quite a discussion on what is actually correct and Japanese behavior. I don’t want to call myself as an expert, but I did see several things here that was a bit misleading. But - in general it does give you some initial pointers. Here are some previous posts on how to eat sushi: Do’s and dont’s in sushi bars How to eat sushi I

Sushi birthday cakes
2007-09-16 02:00:46
I like cakes. Cakes made to look like sushi is even better! This “cake” for instance - is covered in buttercream frosting, it has fondant for the wasabi, chopsticks, platter seaweed and the “fish” sits on top of molded rice crispy treats. The soy sauce is chocolate syrup with a little bit of crushed nuts on top, orange gel frosting for the caviar and the sushi rolls are sliced Twinkies filled with sliced strawberries and kiwis. The outside of the rolls are made of fondant which is then rolled in green sugar confetti for shine. The ginger is colored white chocolate flakes. Fantastic! Great imagination. Here are some more sushi inspired cakes: (more…)

The Japanese Tradition - chopsticks

We found this great new video from our friends over at Tokyomade.com. You all remember the video that explains “The Japanese tradition of eating sushi“. Emperor and empress doll sushi
2007-09-12 13:09:33
March 3rd is a traditional celebration day of girls called “Hina-matsuri in Japan.” The color of pink symbolizes the day and in department stores, everything turns pink and you can find colorful dolls for sale. Here are some dolls that I found on PingMag, which is meant to be the emperor and empress having a relaxed sushi! Very elaborate as fits an Emperor ! Imagine having these as a kid. Ooooh. Cooking bento cute!
2007-09-12 08:00:40
Cookingcute.com is a website run by a vietnamese girl called Ngoc, who (up until february at least) spent a lot of time cooking fantastic bento boxes. She teaches us that the secret to packing bento every day “without driving yourself batty from lack of sleep (or chronically showing up to work late) is good planning. - I can’t say that I always plan well, but when I do, I can whip up a tasty bento in about 30 minutes. Sure, it takes longer than packing a sandwich and chips, but overall it’s healthier, less expensive than eating out, and a cute bento can really brighten your (or a loved one’s) day.” Here are some of her creations: (more…)

Eat Nydalen - Nydalen, Oslo
2007-09-29 08:00:35
Nydalen is a bit unknown territory for me. It seems like a nice area, with lots of businesses and since the business school moved up there, they also get a lot of young kids wandering around, which makes the whole place feel like a happening place. We ventured up there to have lunch and try out “Eat Nydalen”, a viet-thai-sushi place… Did I hear sceptical? Yup. And founded. This place is not run by Japanese people and they have no respect for Japanese food tradition. They have some of their stuff on the menu in Japanese, but get plain outright annoyed if you say you want unagi for eel, to mention an example. (more…)

How To Fillet And Prepare Round Fish
2007-09-29 05:18:33
This video from Videojug.com shows you also how to fillet and prepare a round fish - which in the end means cook it, but what I liked to learn was just to fillet it. Not sure if I am up for trying just yet though. Need to get more used to cutting up just fish filets first…. (Sissy, I know…)
