Master Sgt. Michael Wert, an intelligence chief for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Cherry Point in Havelock, N.C., was vacationing on an early May weekend with his family at the beach when he saw two boys struggling in the surf.
His wife, Debbie, said her husband rushed into the water to help while she went to call 911. Their daughter, Katrina, grabbed a boogie board and followed Wert into the water. She managed to help the boys onto the board, but didn’t see her dad with them. One of the boys told her that he (Wert) had to let them go and had died.
The rescue team found Wert, brought him to shore and tried to revive him. As they worked, strangers prayed with the family and comforted the Wert children.
Wert was six days shy of celebrating his 36th birthday.

Like many I suppose, I had been unsure on who my choice was to be, for presidential candidate in the 2008 election.
But then came Fred Thompson, walking tall, displaying a steel reserve. A man whose strength could be read loud and clear. Not the type of man one would mess with if you know what I’m saying. I was instantly impressed with him as a possible presidential candidate.

Muslim leaders call for Lancashire meat boycott

Halal meat has been taken off the menus at schools across Lancashire following a boycott call by Muslim leaders.
The Lancashire Council of Mosques (LCM) urged parents to “look at other options for the time being, eg Vegetarian School Meals and pack lunches.”
General Secretary of LCM, Councillor Salim Mulla, told The Muslim News, “The boycott emerged after complaints from members of the Muslim community and school governors. Alarms were raised following suspicions over meat being delivered in Queen’s Park Children’s Centre, which culminated in LCM taking up the issue.”
Councillor Mulla praised the action taken by Darwen Borough Council. “The Leader of the County Council, Hazel Harding, withdrew all meat products from 560 schools in Lancashire and 25 schools in Blackburn”, he said.

The Mexican government said Monday it is seeking changes in a U.S. plan to expand fences along the two nations’ border because of the threat to migratory species accustomed to roaming freely across the frontier.
The Environment Department said the fences would seriously hurt species that cross the 1,952-mile border, and said the United States needs to alter or mitigate the barriers - aimed at stopping migrants from crossing illegally into the U.S. - where necessary.
Mexico also wants Washington to expand its
environmental impact study on the fences and will file a complaint with the United Nations’ International Court of Justice in the Hague, Netherlands if necessary.
A report prepared for the Mexican government by experts and activists from both nations said the fences could isolate border animals into smaller population groups, affecting their genetic diversity.

Michael Stokely who lost his life two years ago tomorrow in Baghdad, Iraq when an IED detonated near his position. WASHINGTON — Immigrant families, many with small children, are being kept in jail-like conditions in Texas and Pennsylvania, according to advocacy groups that say the Texas facility is inhumane and should be shut down.
I ask where should they be placed? If not in holding facilities.
“What hits you the hardest in there is that it’s a prison. In Hutto, it’s a prison,” said Michelle Brane, detention and asylum project director for Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children.
Why not make use of what we already have at our disposal? What do they expect?
The Pennsylvania center — the Berks County Shelter Care Facility — has about 84 beds and the Texas facility can house up to 512 people. The groups fear that government will expand detentions in similar facilities.
