cell that was recruiting potential suicide bombers for attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan, Italian police said Tuesday, announcing the arrests of 20 terror suspects.
Police said the suspects, mostly Tunisians, were arrested across Europe as part of the sweep against a cell based in the northern Italian region of Lombardy.
Executing the arrest warrants, police said they found al-Qaida manuals for making explosives, detonation devices and poisons, and instructions on guerrilla techniques.
“The investigation has revealed recruitment, training and passage to aspiring terrorists to Iraq and Afghanistan,” lead investigator Gen. Giampoaolo Ganzer, of Italy’s paramilitary Carabinieri police, told a news conference.
The suspects were wanted on charges ranging from association with the aim of committing international terrorism to falsifying documents to aid illegal immigrants.

Some emailers got a response from Memorial Project Superintendent Joanne Hanley, answering Mr. Tancredo’s contention that the original giant crescent is still present in the redesign. Interestingly, her description of the redesign actually admits that the giant crescent IS still present, both geometrically and thematically.
In 2005, architect Paul Murdoch explained his original Crescent of Embrace design in terms of the flight path: as the hijacked airliner came over the ridgeline above the crash site, its flight path symbolically broke the circle, turning it into a giant crescent. In the original design, the broken off part of the circle was removed entirely:

When Spc. Roger G. Ling’s Humvee was struck by a homemade bomb in October of 2003, he survived the attack and he worked to keep his superior officer, Lt. Matt Homa, alive. Spc. Ling was riding in the backseat of the Humvee when it was hit. It destroyed Lt. Homa’s door.
“It almost killed me. From what I’ve been told, Roger helped keep me awake until my medic arrived.” said Lt. Homa. “Ling was a good kid. You could count on him to do anything.”
Spc. Ling was killed, along with Second Lieutenant Jeffrey C. Graham of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, when their unit came under fire from insurgents in Khalidiyah, Iraq. Only two miles from where he’d survived the attack just four months earlier.
Leona Ling said she was grateful her brother came home in August of 2003 just before leaving for Iraq.

Teachers will be invited to encourage students to imagine they are detained in Guantánamo Bay, and write a poem to express how it feels.
Many of the detainees who have contributed to the book were banned from using paper and pens, so were forced to write their poems on everyday objects such as Styrofoam cups from their dinner trays. To reflect this, participants in the competition will be asked to write their poems on objects such as Styrofoam cups, toilet paper, and clothes.

Rudy Hermann Guede, the immigrant drug dealer hunted as the “fourth suspect” in the murder of Meredith Kercher in the Italian city of Perugia has been arrested in Germany.
His fingerprint was found on Ms Kercher’s blood-soaked pillow and on toilet paper at the whitewashed cottage where the murder took place, police say. In addition, his DNA was found on the British student’s body.
Reports said that Mr Guede had been arrested while on a train between Mainz and Coblenz, and had at first been detained because he was travelling without a ticket. German transport police had then called Interpol.
Interpol said he had been detained at Mainz pending extradition to Italy. An international arrest warrant for his arrest was issued by prosecutors in Perugia this week, and his picture was published in newspapers and on TV Europe-wide.
