A suspected suicide bomber struck Thursday night near a truck carrying former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on her triumphant return to Pakistan after eight years in exile. An official said 108 people were killed and many were wounded although Bhutto escaped unhurt.

Houssein Zorkot just wanted people to think he was tough. At least that’s what he told police detectives and FBI agents hours after his Sept. 8 arrest, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
According to the source, who asked not to be identified, Hussein Zorkot, 26, claimed his stepmother had been spreading rumors about him throughout Dearborn’s large Arab population, rumors that hindered his ability to find a wife.
Although Hussein Zorkot refused to give investigators any specifics about the rumors, the source said, they may have involved allegations that he is a homosexual.

HOGANAS, Sweden (CNN) — Swedish artist Lars Vilks says all he’s doing is taking a stand in the name of artistic expression. But because of that stand, on this afternoon he’s lying low — on the ground, in fact — looking for bombs under his car.
Vilks, who has been a controversial artist for more than three decades in Sweden, says his drawing was a calculated move, and he wanted it to elicit a reaction.
That’s a way of expressing things. If you don’t like it, don’t look at it. And if you look at it, don’t take it too seriously. No harm done, really,” he says.

Can I suggest that you do not go to the Brussels neighbourhoods of St Joost or Schaarbeek tomorrow? This is for the simple reason that, from information I have received from local shopkeepers and cafe owners there is a major demonstration planned for the morning. Not only is the Turkish community planning to put upwards of 10,000 people on the streets, but so is the local Kurdish community. Both of these planned demonstrations have been banned by the police, but in the light of the rioting here over the last week, I wouldn’t put much confidence in the manifestation not going ahead.
This picture should give you an idea of how the area is getting pretty tense. The flags are not for fun, and the streets are oddly quiet.

Lance Cpl. Nicholas Anderson lost his life after the Humvee he was riding in rolled over as a group of Marines pursued a suspicious vehicle near Jalalabad, Afghanistan. He suffered head injuries in the crash and died as he was being transported to a hospital.
Nicholas Anderson joined the Marines in January 2005 and began a six-month tour of Afghanistan two months ago with the 3rd Marines Weapons Platoon, his father, James Anderson said.
“I just know that he died fighting for what he believed in,” he said. “He wanted to be a Marine and even though it was a major risk he just wanted to go.”
James Anderson said his son, a 2003 Sauk Prairie High School graduate, enjoyed riding his motorcycle, lifting weights, going fishing and hanging out with friends.

A Spanish court has sentenced 21 people to jail terms for the 2004 Madrid
train bombings. Now for the political fallout.

With one blow, a three-judge panel at the Spanish High Court today convicted 21 people for the 2004 terror attacks on its commuter trains and undermined a three-year-old political conspiracy theory about the Al Qaeda-inspired violence.
After a two-year investigation and a nearly five-month-long trial that included about 750 witnesses, the court ruled unanimously to sentence 21 of the 29 defendants to prison terms ranging from three to 40,000 years for various counts of homicide, attempted homicide, belonging to and collaboration with a terrorist group, falsifying documents and trafficking in explosives.
