New Tings
2007-04-16 19:38:00
Well if you're wondering why we've been so quite lately then it's down to a few changes we've made on the site.First off is the new look search pages (bars and clubs) which have a new user interface - hover your mouse over a listing box and it'll expand and give you more info. You can lock the box so that it doesn't hide when you move your mouse away, and there's more buttons to give you area guides, add the bar/club to your favourites etc. There's a cool new map feature that was previously only shown for bar searches. It's part-hidden at the top, so click on the 'show map' button to reveal it. Inside you'll see pointers for all the bars/clubs returned by your search, but you can also click on 'Marked on the map', and that'll reveal the bar/club in the map. We've also added some search inteligence, as the distinction between what is a bar, club or venue has become blurred. Now if you search for a bar called 'One Central' it'll match an event, and a venue with that nam

Chris Rock: Virginia
2007-04-18 17:47:00
Each horrific shooting in the United States causes an outcry around the world and the inevitable finger pointing begins as people try to work out why it happened. He's Chinese South Korean // he plays video games // he listens to rap // he has no friends // dysfunctional family // etc etc.In the words of Chris Rock: "Whatever happened to crazy? What the hell is wrong with these kids?I got people telling me, "Come on, Chris, Come up to a school. Talk to the kids."I'm like, "Fuck the kids! Have you got a vest? Maybe Ill think about it."Everybody wants to know what the kids was listening to. What kind of music was they listening to? Or what kind of movies was they watching?Who gives a fuck what they was watching? Whatever happened to crazy? What, you can't be crazy no more? Did we eliminate "crazy" from the dictionary? Fuck the records. Fuck the movies. Crazy! When I was a kid, they used to separate the crazy kids from everybody. The crazy kids went to school in a little-ass bus, they had

Two Thirds of the region back the congestion charge64% think the congestion charge is a bad idea. The MEN has published the results of their 'Green Survey', where almost two thirds of the region back the Congestion Charge. The problem is that a month earlier the MEN ran a survey that said exactly the opposite. The difference, it would seem, is that the earlier survey was by the MEN themselves, whereas the latter was with the 'assistance' of 'Manchester Is My Planet'.'Manchester is my planet' appear to be in the pocket of both Manchester City Council and the Government (they "advise the government on the north west's environmental policy", and proudly show a Manchester city council logo on their websites homepage). Is it wise to ask an environmental group, funded by the government, to carry out this survey? Would you believe a survey that Ford or Shell carried out?Thankfully we have word from the government that no C-charge will be introduced unless it has the public's support.

Brazen couple fool around with MEN
2007-04-24 14:31:00
How-do.co.uk, run by the entertaining Nick Jaspan, leads with a story about a seemingly innocent article in the Metro. The piece converned two lovers in a bath (alongside a suitably raunchy photograph) but the 'couple ' looked surprisingly familiar to those in PR business. The guy, Matt, is in a relationship with the head honcho at Brazen PR and his chocolate covered friend - whilst pleasant to the eyes - unfortunately works for Brazen. Less of a scandal, more of a publicity stunt (for a chocolate shop in Cheshire). The MEN isn't happy having the wool pulled over their eyes, and an anonymous source told How-Do: “Basically it appears they’ve lied to us and had a laugh at our expense.”Brazen PR's Emma Beck - not laughing - said: “This was a fantastic picture case study that was actually factually correct about two guys, but had been changed to feature a guy and his closest female friend from school. We are very sorry if we misled the paper and actually wrote to all involved to e

The Panacea Problem
2007-04-23 14:13:00
More on the Joe Akka jailing....McrOnline have a quote from the Manchester Pub and Club Network's Phil Burke, who clearly isn't happy about Mr Akka's actions: "We at the network absolutely condemn this man's actions. We hope that the authorities will act to ensure he cannot hold a licence again."Mamucium left this comment on the story, and I couldn't have put it better myself:"So, considering the published entry policy on the Panacea website is, "No shouting, no clouting" is the erstwhile Mr. Akka now barred from his own establishment?"So is it curtains for Panacea and their planned expansion to Alderley Edge?Whathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

Kick em while theyre down: Mancs rob from burnt building
2007-05-04 15:43:00
The NQ Fire may have put an office block out of commission for a week or two but that hasn't put the burglars off. They put on their wellies and robbed 24 Lever Street of laptops, a hifi and some CD's. After all the press coverage around the Liverpool goalkeeper's burglary, I wonder if this will get any press coverage. The shouts of 'Thieving scousers' have died down, and it seems that we're no better than our scouse neighbours.Whathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

Bad service? Here's how they do it in Londontown
2007-05-04 12:58:00
If you dislike the whole 'restaurant' experience then spare a thought for the poor diners who witnessed a man severing his own penis off. Patrons at Zizzi's in Central London (soon to in Spinningfields) were half way through their Penne alla Pineta when a madman struck. Walking through the restaurant to the kitchen, he returned with a knife ('like' the one pictured above) and then Unuch-osized himself. Sales rep and part time witness Stuart McMahon got straight to the point: “He jumped on a table, dropped his trousers and popped his penis out. Then he cut it off.". It seems almost unbeliavable, something which Stuart later confirmed: "I couldn’t believe it."After restraining the man with CS gas, the police were left to pick up the pieces.Whathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

Google Earth Updates Manchester
2007-05-03 23:45:00
The imagery behind Google Earth has been updated, which means that Manchester looks a little more like it should do. The previous photos were from as far back as 2002, so there were countless buildings missing, but now they've been updated it so you can check out No.1 Deansgate, Timber Wharf and the big building site that became Spinningfield. The new imagery appears to have been taken in mid 2004, as there are tables out at the defunct Jacksons Wharf (Sorely missed). So it's still pretty out of date, but at least it shows Manchester in the sun, and with a few more 'landmarks'.I couldn't help notice the similarities between the town hall and the Imperial Destroyer from Star Wars. I wonder what Darth Vadar would think of the congestion chargeWhathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

Good News: there's no fire, bad news.....
2007-05-08 16:13:00
The BBC carries a story about the famous Robbs in Hexham, which I've visited a few times but of which I have nothing of interest to say. The store had just made the decision to close, so the administrators decided the the most "efficient and practical" way to inform the staff was to set off a fire alarm. When all the staff gathered at the fire-point they were met by the Administrators who delivered the message: "Good news, there's no fire! Bad news, you're being made redundant".The BBC says: "[Parent company] Liverpool-based Owen Owen has been struggling with cash flow problems since March and has been involved in negotiations to sell its Jopling's store in Sunderland"Owen Owen, started by a man named Owen Owen, entered administration on the 28th Feb.Whathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

Krispy Kreme

The Glazed Cruller and Cinamon Apple will soon be touching down in Manchester! After years of speculiation Krispy Kreme has finally set a date! Their first North West outlet is set to open in December 07. And shockingly they're avoiding Manchester City centre and opening an outlet in the Trafford Centre. I thought donuts were the staple diet of office workers? I for one will be making the drive though, just to get my hands on one of these......or one of the fifteen other types of Donut that they sell. Ithaca: Even Closer
2007-06-04 09:20:00
Just a day after I blogged about Ithaca this press release landed in my inbox. The restaurant/bar is going to 'soft launch' in July, with a VIP party in September. "Ithaca – Manchester ‘s newest and most stylish A-List nightspot looks set to open its doors in a blaze of glory this summer after a two year, multi-million pound fit out.The eclectic Asian restaurant, which will also house an intimate bar and an exclusive members lounge is the brainchild of entrepreneur and leisure operator Arnie Hira, one of the owners and founders of One Central Street in the city centre. The extravagant 7,700 square foot venue has seen an investment of more than £4 million to ensure perfection in every detail and is split across four floors boasting a dark and stylish interior. Arnie, said: “Ithaca has been a long time in the planning and a lot of investment has taken place because I wanted the best of everything.“I have lavished a huge amount of care and attention on this project and while it

80 tonnes of Sankeys sand
2007-06-04 08:56:00
Urbis and Sankeys have joined forces and are promising a 'Summer of Sand' for Manchester. 80 tonnes of 'fairtrade sand' will be shipped in from the Bahamas and spread out around Cathedral Gardens. The beach will be open from from noon until midnight, and will feature palm trees, caribean style bars with music and sports events. The beach will be right next to the Urbis building, so beachgoers can make use of the facilities there, and additional security staff will be drafted in to make sure the event isn't taken over by scallies. The event is still at in the early planning stages, but Urbis are hopeful that it will go ahead. With temperatures in the city already on the rise, this could be a good move for Sankeys and Urbis. The latter has struggled to tap in to the under-30's market, and has recently hosted clubbing events for Million Dollar Disco and Yellow in a bid to broaden its appeal. The aim is to build on the success by hosting what could - pending approval - be one of the mor

Google wants to see you (in your underwear)
2007-06-03 12:11:00
Everyone's favourite search engine is embarking on their ambitious 'Street View' project, which will allow you to virtually travel around the streets of selected cities. The project began last week with a minor hiccup - the accidental plastering of McDonalds over the service as one of their 'camera cars' went for a drive thru lunch - and now civil liberties groups are up in arms. Turns out that after a good few weeks taking photos around San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas and Miami they'd inadvertently captured people entering strip clubs, adult book stores and being questioned by police. The Telegraph has run a piece on it: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/06/01/ngoogle201.xml and lawyer Kevin Bankston clearly likes to wander his gaffe in boxer shorts: "If the Google van happened by your house at the right moment it could even capture you in an embarrassing state of undress as you close your blinds, for instance.". Google is promising to remove "objection

Ithaca: Nearly There
2007-05-18 05:21:00
When you're planning Manchester's first £3million bar restaurant then you should expect the unexpected (and then expect that your project may get delayed because of them). Builders, money and walls can disappear overnight (The latter delayed the grand opening of Ascension in the Northern Quarter) but you can forgive the team behind Ithaca for not considering that God might get in the way. After a long and unnecessarily bitter struggle with the church they're finally close to opening their new bar restaurant....and it's expected (but in no way guaranteed) to be launched this Summer, even as soon as this month!Further down Deansgate and the Cocoa Rooms is set to re-open as well.Whathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

The Warehouse Project 2007
2007-06-12 09:37:00
The Warehouse Project is back! The homeless club will be taking over another urban space in October 2007, almost ten months after their last event at the now defunct Boddingtons Brewery (unless you count the Beneath The Streets three-dayer they had back in May, and the upcoming 'Industrial Resolution' at the GMEX 'Manchester Central').The chosen venue will be 'even bigger than last years', which poses the question: Where? There aren't many venues in Manchester that can hold circ. 3,000 people (The GMEX, Jilly's & The Music Box (at a squeeze) are two of the unlikely places....)Whilst very little has been revealed yet, the chances are that they'll play from the start of term (the club was hugely popular with the students, who - for once - were given the opportunity to lap up real clubbing) until New Years Eve....If it's anything like last years then expect that a) it'll be a dirty grimy affair with a nod to house, techno and a few more 'down tempo' events . b) it'll bring s

Sozzled Street Star punches above his weight
2007-06-11 08:42:00
The Mirror carries an exclusive story about pint-sized Steve Arnold (better known as Our Ashleh from Corrie) getting sloshed and offering both Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank a fight. A charity event was held at Old Trafford, home to one of the infamous bouts between the Dark Destroyer and Eubanks', entitled 'The War of the Words' with the former world champions returning to the boxing ring to discuss their lives, and their various run ins with each other, and the law (Eubanks' anti-war stance has earned him a good few court appearances)Benn and Eubanks' reportedly had no idea what to do when Steve climbed in to the ring, who was at the event with the Michael Le Vell (Kevin from Corrie) and serial mong Darren Day, and the boxers left it to security to drag him out of the room, with the rest of the audience, who had shelled out £150 per ticket, booing.A Granada spokesman said this: "It was all a bit of fun and part of an enjoyable charity evening. As far as Steven was concerned, he di
